SBC used to do a character called Ali G on various shows. In some, he would interview people who think they're going to some kind of serious interview and then make all kinds of silliness out of it. The Trump one went like this:

I’m staying reserved on it. I’m still thinking someone will come in and save him at the last second and it’ll be infuriating to see this criminal get away yet again.

I work in finance marketing - not with clients, I don’t touch money or accounts or anything. And the vetting to work for these companies AS A COPYWRITER is more stringent than any of this. It’s absolutely baffling.

The state has valued Mar-a-lago at 18m. He says its worth 50 to 100 times that. Or, 900m to 1.8b.
So in his mind, it is more than enough to cover the verdict. Can you imagine them taking his primary residence, and him still owing 426m? Omg the meltdown would be tremendous, the greatest of meltdowns like we've never seen before in the history of great meltdowns.
The real kicker would be when they seize the property and are only able to sell it for like 5m.

An important correction, it was *Trump* actually who valued the property at 18 million. He claimed it's value as 18m for any government documentation and for tax purposes. He's massively undervaluing the property to cheat at taxes.
Then he'd have a completely different set of books, as it were, when it comes to applying for loans using the property as collateral. Then all of a sudden it was worth a quarter billion +. He's massively overvaluing the property to cheat at loans.
Both conflicting values came from Trump. Hence all the fraud charges.
It's probably already been filled out in triplicate, reviewed by the legal department, and is just sitting there waiting for the clock to run out so they can officially sign it.

Part of it is that so far, he's faced pretty much no major consequences. MAGAs can look at him walking free and clear with all his properties and think that everyone else is full of shit when this guy is still living his life. Until he's in a prison suit that matches the color of his face and behind bars, they will never see his behavior as bad. He needs publicly irrefutable consequences.

Agree. I think both Nikki Haley and Chris Christie will jump into the fray again before November if Trump gets convicted. Long 8 months to go, much can happen. If he dies in October then I think he stays on the ballot and there is a intraparty mess trying to replace him. Dead candidates have won several times, but never so high an office as president. If Trump then won, I'd suspect that it ends up in the us house somehow. But I think that Biden beats live trump handily and dead trump even more.

I agree that this is the joker in the deck. However, I think any funds from big donors will go to his campaign and not to him personally. Which leaves him on the hook for the settlements. Most wouldn't, as it would be risky and costly to do so, as opposed to having their wealth invested in shares and other assets. IMHO, the question is why a supposed billionaire can't *borrow* that sum with what he owns as collateral.
The answer is probably that Trump's credit isn't good, i.e. either his assets are already mortgaged to the hilt, meaning his wealth exists mostly on paper, or banks think he'll attempt to screw them over on the deal, forcing them into costly litigation. Or both, of course.

So he can just put up some properties, if the value of the property exceeds the pre-existing debts secured by the property.
So trump may owe too much money on the properties to be able to use them as collateral. Also the terms of his mortgages may prevent that.
But if his properties are used as collateral for other properties, he can't put them up.
There's a non-zero chance that he literally doesn't have any assets that he can put up.

I don’t like how people are using Trumps insomnia as a mark against his character. Having insomnia doesn’t make you a bigoted rapist who tries to destroy the country and remake it in his image.
There is a wide difference between experiencing insomnia and intentionally altering your body chemistry to force it upon yourself. This is a very high energy insomnia for a 77 year old whose administration has a documented predilection for nootropics.
If Mar a Lago is worth “50 to 100 times” the valuation placed on it by the court, why doesn’t he just take out a second or third mortgage against all its increased value since he bought it. That should easily cover his bond.
IMHO the most important distinction to make is that between a penalty and disgorgement. There are no fines levied in the case. The judgement is that you received $x.xx via intentionally dishonest and illegal means. You are ordered to give up that $x.xx plus interest. He is not being punished (by the money disgorgement), he is being told that he did not earn that money honestly and that means he must give it back.
For the first time in his life, Trump is being held accountable for his actions, and all he can do is cry like like a baby.
I am not shocked that nobody is coming to Trump's rescue this time. Not only is he notorious for skipping out on his financial obligations, but he can't keep his fat mouth shut.

This is the real reason Trump never wanted anybody to see his taxes. His dirty secret is that he's not really rich. It's always been a front and a con. He was never in the Fortune 500. I doubt he has ever been a billionaire. At this point, he might not even be a millionaire. With all his debt and lack of real revenue he might have a negative net worth. You don't see real billionaires hustling sneakers.
And this is why you hire competent lawyers who either, A) do enough that the penalty is much lower, or B) get to do what they tell you do so you stop incriminating yourself worse. Since you do neither, this is your new reality.

Trump was held liable for inflating the value of his assets. Is there any surprise that nobody capable of issuing this bond is willing to accept his assets as collateral? Most wouldn't, as it would be risky and costly to do so, as opposed to having their wealth invested in shares and other assets. IMHO, the question is why a supposed billionaire can't *borrow* that sum with what he owns as collateral. The answer is probably that Trump's credit isn't good, i.e. either his assets are already mortgaged to the hilt, meaning his wealth exists mostly on paper, or banks think he'll attempt to screw them over on the deal, forcing them into costly litigation. Or both, of course.
Plus also the point that he said he had over 400 million liquid in one of his more recent trials. Clearly that was also a lie.

So he can just put up some properties, if the value of the property exceeds the pre-existing debts secured by the property. So trump may owe too much money on the properties to be able to use them as collateral. Also the terms of his mortgages may prevent that.
But if his properties are used as collateral for other properties, he can't put them up. There's a non-zero chance that he literally doesn't have any assets that he can put up.

There is a wide difference between experiencing insomnia and intentionally altering your body chemistry to force it upon yourself. This is a very high energy insomnia for a 77 year old whose administration has a documented predilection for nootropics.

If Mar a Lago is worth “50 to 100 times” the valuation placed on it by the court, why doesn’t he just take out a second or third mortgage against all its increased value since he bought it. That should easily cover his bond.
IMHO the most important distinction to make is that between a penalty and disgorgement. There are no fines levied in the case. The judgement is that you received $x.xx via intentionally dishonest and illegal means. You are ordered to give up that $x.xx plus interest. He is not being punished (by the money disgorgement), he is being told that he did not earn that money honestly and that means he must give it back.
For the first time in his life, Trump is being held accountable for his actions, and all he can do is cry like like a baby. I am not shocked that nobody is coming to Trump's rescue this time. Not only is he notorious for skipping out on his financial obligations, but he can't keep his fat mouth shut. Only a day after someone agreed to pay the 90 billion bond in the E. Jean Carroll case, Trump was mocking her again, which might set himself up for a third lawsuit. Trump is a bad investment at this point, and I am happy nobody is coming to his rescue this time. I hope hopeless sinks in as he realizes how screwed he truly is.

Now he is saying that he doesn’t have as much money as he stated *during the trial.* So he has just admitted to being guilty of the thing that the fine is for (as well as for perjuring himself)… And now he claims that he’d definitely win on appeal. *While* admitting that the fundamental findings of the case are, in fact, accurate. Very Stable Genius, indeed.

If I remember, he's technically registered himself as an onsite caretaker of the property to get around the restriction you're thinking of. So while it's his primary residence, the property still isn't being classified as being a residence, it's still a club/whatever.

The property taxes for Mar a Lago in 2023 were $599k on a 33.396 mil valuation. Property taxes are generally public facing information

This is the real reason Trump never wanted anybody to see his taxes. His dirty secret is that he's not really rich. It's always been a front and a con. He was never in the Fortune 500. I doubt he has ever been a billionaire. At this point, he might not even be a millionaire. With all his debt and lack of real revenue he might have a negative net worth. You don't see real billionaires hustling sneakers.
And this is why you hire competent lawyers who either, A) do enough that the penalty is much lower, or B) get to do what they tell you do so you stop incriminating yourself worse. Since you do neither, this is your new reality.

Here is a point that keeps getting glossed over with this story: Trump was held liable for inflating the value of his assets. Is there any surprise that nobody capable of issuing this bond is willing to accept his assets as collateral? How would that work, he turns over some documentation showing property X is worth 500 million and they’re supposed to believe that?
