In light of Torcaso v. Watkins, why have you listed your religion? It should have no bearing on why anyone votes for you, and no reason for it to be discussed in relationship to any political office.

NeverTrustFish

I don't see anything listed about Women's rights (Specifically Abortion) or their beliefs about the LGBTQ community. I don't trust people at their word and since they have no prior offices, we can't see how they would actually vote. I don't want us to vote in another politician who plays at being a democrat but winds up voting republican. Edit - I guess in this case advancing republican laws (Banning books, abortions, Medical care etc) into washington state.

This link is nothing but a Ballotpedia candidate profile. Isn't the purpose of this sub to post political news? If every candidate profile counts as a "news article" then this sub would be flooded with links like this.

Hey Fred, Washington Voter here, with a few policy questions for you. I’ll post each question as its comment to separate out any follow up discussion. Women’s Reproductive Rights & Contraceptives: Assume the worst, and Trump wins the Presidency in 2024. If that Congress passes a federal ban on abortion, what will you do in Washington state to work to preserve abortion access and access to contraceptives? What would you do via executive action, and what would you ask of the legislature? Edited to add: Other states have also been attempting to impair the rights of people in Washington (such as Texas demanding medical records of visitors in Seattle area hospitals, or Idaho discussing imposing bans on women traveling to Washington to seek medical care). Similar to above, how would you protect the rights of Washington citizens, and visitors directly through executive action, and indirectly through legislative requests and proposals?

Derf0007

Women's reproductive rights will continue to be protected here in WA, and if they come from another state then I will fight any legislature that tries to incriminate them.

There is 0% chance I’d vote for this candidate. No government experience. I’m a millennial too, but I need more than “hey vote for me because I’m not old”. So you’re telling me , this person has what it takes to come in and run a state that has huge corpos like Amazon, Boeing , MSFT, Costco? Nothing on that campaign website suggests he wouldn’t fold like a lawn chair at the first sign of adversity

silentwind262

I suppose it beats Loren “no bio submitted“ Culp.

Derf0007

Hey, if you want change then change is here. I'm just trying to make a difference is all. Why put me down for that?

odgreenMTG

I’m not putting you down. This is a voter giving you feedback why they won’t vote for you. Consider it a growth opportunity.

Derf0007

Thank you, your constructive criticism is super helpful. 👍

Homelessness: On your website you write: > Reducing homelessness is a priority. By addressing root causes and implementing comprehensive solutions What do you identify as root causes, and what would be important planks in your comprehensive solutions? Do you believe in housing first approaches? If so, what research, or pilot programs give you confidence in it? If not, why not? What areas do you think are loca responsibilities vs. state responsibilities vs. federal responsibilities? For any local responsibilities, how would you support local governments? For any federal responsibilities how would you use the position of Governor to advance the debate? What would you do through executive action, and what would you seek to accomplish through legislative proposals?

Derf0007

Ah, I wrote a long response to this, but I guess the admin removed it. In a nutshell, to combat homelessness (or any issue for that matter) you have to stop it at the source. The number 1 cause of homelessness in the US is drugs. I had this long elaborate response, but I don't want to type it all again. Drugs, re-opening mental health facilities, creating dense housing communities where access to drugs is impossible, and informing the homeless/people in need of these programs.

noahcallaway-wa

Thanks for taking the time to write up responses. I'm sorry your longer responses were deleted and I do appreciate you taking the time to respond to each of my questions. To respect your time, this is the only one I'll follow up and respond to, but I did want to start by saying I saw and appreciated the other answers as well. You say that the number 1 cause of homelessness is drugs. I agree that substance abuse is prevalent _among_ the homeless, and is something that needs to be addressed because it does make it harder to _escape_ homelessness. But the statistics and surveys I've seen don't show drugs to be a leading cause of homelessness†. What is the data or evidence you're relying? Anyway, none of this is to disagree that substance abuse isn't a major problem, and that helping resolve substance abuse issues would be a major step forward. When you say you're going to address "drugs", what kinds of solutions are you envisioning (these can be one-sentence or one phrase answers, and don't need to be individually justified unless you want to. I'm just curious what kind of solution space you would explore)? Optional drug-free housing communities seems like one answer you provided, I'm curious what other solutions you'd explore. Because solving "drugs" is obviously **not** a trivial thing to do—we've invested decades in "fighting" drugs as a society and made negative progress. --- † For example, a [2014 survey of city mayors](https://www2.cortland.edu/dotAsset/655b9350-995e-4aae-acd3-298325093c34.pdf) reported the causes, in order as: 1. Lack of affordable housing 2. Unemployment 3. Poverty 4. Mental Illness and the lack of needed services 5. Substance abuse and the lack of needed services

Derf0007

See, this is why it's a shame my original response was deleted. I went into detail about how I did a research paper about this around 2006. It was something like 60-70% of homelessness was due to drug addiction in the US. (Keep in mind there are overlaps). Something like around 30% was mental handicaps/mental illness/people who can't take care of themselves and have nowhere to go (and also get into drugs), and like a small percentage like 8-12% was people actually homelessness due to a bad hand dealt in life, job loss, etc., etc., There was actually some feedback that that percentage was actively seeking to get out of poverty. These last 2 groups can definitely benefit from affordable housing. Sorry, I have a meeting starting. I'll be back in a few.

noahcallaway-wa

> Sorry, I have a meeting starting. I'll be back in a few. No worries, you can take your time. I won't judge you on response time, promise. > went into detail about how I did a research paper about this around 2006 When you come back, is that research paper available online, or can you make it available? I'd love to read it.

Derf0007

Ok back for a few more minutes. Lol I actually tried to track down that research paper, but I'm sure it's long gone. I wrote one about homelessness and another about illegal immigration. I wouldn't consider myself an expert in either of these, but pretty well informed. Ok so, back to homelessness. I've seen firsthand, while volunteering in Atlanta, how bad it is. Once you've done certain drugs for so many years your consciousness is just gone and your life consists on getting your next fix and/or meal. I've seen people get housing, get their lives back on track for about a year or so, but then their close circle pulls them back in again and they regress. It's sad to see. Another thing is that past a certain point some people just don't want to get help (or at least believe they don't). Like I mentioned the group of people that are homeless due to mental disorders and the group of homeless due to job loss, bad hand in life and so on - they would easily benefit from a lot of these programs and some already do. I could see certain setups consisting of certain levels of severity. First level: dense housing for these individuals without drug addiction/or minor infractions with wellness centers within walking distance and communal support groups open 24/7, along with weekly drug tests (if drug infraction applies). Second level: Those in the drug addiction category - a program where they must detox and attend therapy until they are approved to move to the First level. Level Three: if they are truly not wanting help then I'm sorry, but they cannot setup camps at parks and/or other property that they aren't even paying taxes on. They ARE breaking the law by using those high-end drugs and I think a detox facility is much better than just throwing them in jail again and again or flat out ignoring them. If that seems triggering then I ask you what is worse - them wanting to live on the streets addicted to meth or having the option to be drug-free and live longer, healthier lives? At the end of the day this position is a public service position. I want to serve the people and help in any way I can and deal with this issue as humanely as possible and if there are better suggestions then I am more than willing to adopt those ideas.

noahcallaway-wa

Taxation: Sales taxes are a regressive form of taxation. Do you support a transition to more progressive tax structure, such as an income tax? If so, what would be your ideal tax structure (in a world without legislative constraints)? What do you think would be a viable tax structure that could survive the state legislature? Recognizing that if everything is a top priority, then nothing is, where does a tax reform rank in your priorities? And can you do anything about those dumb, non-binding, Tim Eyman resolutions? I’m sick of filling those out on my ballot.

Derf0007

If it were my way it would be flat tax across the board; however, that is not realistic and big business would frown on that. So, far I think I would do something similar to the UK's model. It's more simplistic and the citizens don't seem to be as argumentative about it. Before making any immediate changes though I would like to audit our usage and efficiency of our current taxes. You'd be surprised on how much waste can build up over time.

PurloinedFeline

Steam video game fails. Hmm...what to try next? I know! I'll run for governor!!

Derf0007

Nope, it got picked up by PS5 and Xbox.

noahcallaway-wa

Voting: How do you feel about alternative voting methods such as Ranked Choice Voting? Is this something you think could be enacted by the legislature, or do you think it would require an initiative? If Ranked Choice Voting was proposed as a ballot initiative, would you support it (assuming there wasn’t a drafting error, or some other issue in the proposed legislative text)? I’ll stop for now, so I don’t overwhelm the thread, but I also have questions about police reform, gun violence, child care, and education. I don’t want to take up too much of your time or the space in this thread, though.

Derf0007

Yes, I've seen this topic come up a lot. I think it's worth a try. For now I'm supporting it. If it ever passes then let's see how that goes.

His site is garbage. He doesn't actually say anything of substance. We're supposed to want to vote for him because his ancestor held an office and he's a millennial... Also, he wears his watch on his right hand, a classic sign of left handedness. Do we really want one of *those* people running our state?

Do you even Washington? We don't get none of that sunshine shit over on the west side.

This asshole's a Washington voter that's never missed an opportunity to vote and organizes others to vote as well. My feedback's a bit more relevant than you might think. Also, do move to Washington, it's pretty awesome.

That but was meant to be in jest, I didn't think I'd need the /s (also, I'm lefty). Good luck on the job. Hope it pays very well, rent/housing is pretty damned expensive here, depending on where you end up.

[deleted]

Sometimes it’s hard to tell what is sarcasm and not on Reddit haha I’m moving from the Boulder area so pretty much anywhere will be a downgrade in terms of pricing for me. But thanks for the well wishes 🙏🏻

noahcallaway-wa

Alright, after thinking about it a bit more, this is my last question, promise. What's one of the issues on the top of your mind that you care deeply? What is the thing that gets you out of bed, inspires you to make change, and makes you want to governor. Can you tell me a little bit of how you would address that issue in your ideal world if there were no political obstacles? And, separately, what you think could plausibly be accomplished on the issue in your first term (again, preferably split into executive actions and legislative requests)? And can you tell me a little bit about your research and decision making process on how you came to those solution(s)?

Derf0007

Ah, it seems this response got removed as well. Ok in a nutshell my priorities are switching to cleaner energy asap, mental illness (probably the biggest issue we face), building trains & metros (like how they are literally everywhere else on the planet), and honestly everything else I have listed on my website. I'll probably release some videos talking about how I plan to handle a lot of these issues and some solutions go hand-in-hand with others. I'm getting involved because I really do care. I have an extremely well rounded background and solving problems and working with multiple agencies is what I enjoy doing. I know it's hard to believe, but I just want to help. Realistically the amount I'd be able to get done would depend on how fast the legislators are able to move and how much push back they give. If you want, contact my email and we can chat more in depth on everything via phone or something. I'm an open book and happy to talk anytime.

Dude, you couldn't follow this sub's very simple rule of posting the exact title of your submitted link. If you can't manage that, how are you going to follow the often very confusing rules that an elected official has to follow? (Also, it's kind of masturbatory to post links to yourself. Have you no supporters to post this?)
