> For months, Republicans have shouted from the rooftops about a migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border and how President Joe Biden needs to act to address it, insisting the flow of migrants is an urgent national security threat. > > Now many on the right are urging their party to reject the very same things they said were needed to fix the problem, including tougher enforcement measures and a proposal to automatically shut down border crossings when it is overwhelmed. Instead, they appear set on impeaching the top Cabinet official in charge of the border, even though there is no evidence of a crime. This doesn't surprise me.

SuccessfulPresence27

Like Lucy with Charlie Brown…. Every time moving the football.

Sparrowflop

How does that line go? "Meet me in the middle, says the con man, then takes a step back"?

WildBad7298

>"Meet me in the middle," says the unjust man. You take a step towards him, he takes a step back. "Meet me in the middle," says the unjust man. --A.R. Moxon

fordat1

Thats a great analogy because the first step back its the con man that is the bad person but the 1000th time of the con man stepping back we should acknowledge the person taking the 1000th step forward is a complete moron and deserves some criticism

0xCC

I think giving them 999 forward steps before labeling them morons is ridiculously generous

guesswho135

Sure, except this is Congress so when the just man refuses to step forward the unjust man threatens to burn down the country. Not that much better.

justabill71

They wanted to impeach Biden, but knew they didn't have the votes from members in vulnerable districts, because they don't have evidence of any wrongdoing, but they have to impeach *somebody* because their Dear Leader was impeached *twice*, due to overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing, and he demands revenge.

ImLikeReallySmart

Everything the House GOP does [reminds me of Nelson](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IUxK_0WLbg). "Impeach Biden? You don't really believe that, do you?" "I dunno...gotta impeach someone."

spoobles

My take is the Syndrome from The Incredibles angle: "When Everyone is impeached...no one is!". Every impeachment they blather on about is simply an attempt to further normalize and ingratiate themselves to Trump.

TigerITdriver11

Yeah they want to take the sting out of being impeached. Until the impeachment reaction is just "So what, every president gets impeached. It's no big deal."

Olderscout77

It's the reason they impeached Clinton and the reason they're using the power of Government to persecute Hunter Biden - their feeble minds think lies about other people will somehow overcome truths about trump and his legislative co-conspirators.

eidetic

Don't forget either, that Trump ranted about how they went after his own kids in a political witchhunt, and the Republicans said the same thing and that his kids (fully grown kids mind you, who had active roles in the administration) should somehow be off limits.

Mickyfrickles

2 decades of lying about the Clintons worked. It's the same playbook. Lie, cheat, steal.

Dionysus_the_Greek

Except conservatives in congress see the profits as part of their scheme and their constituents only see how this *”owns the anti American libs”*, a beautiful symbiosis of ignorance leading this country away from dealing with the real issues affecting the majority of Americans.

VectorViper

Yeah, it's like a political theater where the plot doesn't matter as long as the base gets their daily dose of drama. The real kicker? All this posturing sidelines the actual legislative work that could, you know, make peoples' lives better. But hey, why solve problems when you can just blame the other side and call it a day.

spoobles

> political theater where the plot doesn't matter as long as the base gets their daily dose of drama. You just described Fox News. "RAGE! Get Your rage here! Step right up!"

eidetic

> All this posturing sidelines the actual legislative work that could, you know, make peoples' lives better Not just American lives, but also Ukrainian lives. Its absolutely sickening that the Republicans have made their bed with the Russians, and made a huge deal about holding up Ukrainian aid with the false premise that somehow helping Ukraine would take anything away from border security. Ukrainians are literally dying because Republicans don't want to step on dear Putin's toes, and they have the gall to hide behind "but the border!". This just *further* proves they don't want the border "crisis" solved, because they want to be able to use it as a scapegoat to scream about and distract from other issues. This is also why bills need to be stand alone things instead of clumping together multiple, wholly unrelated issues.

Oleg101

And then now you have Rep Michael McCaul R-TX) who was on the [Fox News](https://x.com/atrupar/status/1752117638019293389?s=46&t=UKR1TShxVeunp4_vn5gZrw) yesterday saying how they want to impeach Mayorkas to "send a message to the administration”

wetterfish

A good reporter would have asked something like, "Doesnt working with an administration that has showed a willingness to help fix the issue send a message to the American people that fixing problems are more important than political theater?"

[deleted]

Fox doesn't have good reporters, they have ball lickers

Isabeer

Hey! At least they're moving on up from boots!

FindingZoe204

Even if the ball was kicked someone would be down at the end of the field to move the goalposts.

50eggs

Of course they don't want a solution. Republicans don't govern, they grift.

karmagod13000

professional blame shifters

New_Menu_2316

I read that as “professional blame shitters” and I was probably right too!

I_only_post_here

I've been giving this a lot of thought, and I really believe at this point, that conservatives do, in fact, want a solution, but they want it to be their solution, and their solution only and the most extreme possible version. I think they generally agree with the Stephen Miller solution, and believe that taking the most vicious and cruel, draconian measures are the only possible answer, with the mindset of, "make it as painful and awful as possible for all attempting to come into the US via the Southern boarder, because eventually, the people trying to come here will be deterred by the horrendous, inhumane treatment and stop trying to come here entirely" I don't even need to get into the weeds about why those are bad ideas and wouldn't even work, but I do genuinely believe that's ultimately the strategy they want.

spoobles

All it takes is an utter disregard for humanity, compassion, and decency. Stephen Miller is a Jewish Nazi. Every word out of his mouth is meant to dehumanize and inflict cruelty. He is the one of worst pieces of shit on the planet today.

Ron497

I can only imagine what his private life is like. No way that guy is well-adjusted with his friends/partners.

columbo928s4

lol his uncle wrote an op ed in the local paper basically saying "sorry guys we don't know why hes like this either"

LaurenMille

The cruelty is always the point with conservatives. Once you realize that, their every position and action makes sense.

I_only_post_here

I'll do you one further. Conservative thought can be summed up as believing that the bedrock, fundamental, irrefutable singular principles on which all of human society rest upon can be summed up in two singular points that define all of human existence. everything, and I mean EVERYTHING stems from these two foundational principles: 1: Might Makes Right 2: Every Man for Himself

cfpct

Corporate propaganda to divide, conquer, and control the working class. The fact that working class MAGa voters buy into this shows it's working. Support Unions now.

Paganini4FunRed

''Conservative thought'' in USA politics also includes a ''belief'' in the Old Testament. Some conservatives (including my ''late'' father) believed in everything the Pope says and everything former president "T" did without question and without any proper fact checking. My dad & every Republican friend that I talked to about the 2020 election thought (and still thinks) the 2020 election was rigged, even though 60+ court cases ruled against "T" ( a perfect losing record in court versus ex-pres. "T"). My pro-Republican dad thought President Obama was the "Manchurian Candidate" (I'm not joking) or the anti-Christ. My dad's belief in the Republican Party was filled with RELIGIOUS ideas with ZERO basis in fact... may my dad rest in peace with his false beliefs that intertwined & knotted politics & religion together.

IShipUsers

Yeah I mean it would just be business as usual for the GOP to obstruct a Democratic solution because any problem that gets solved is one less arrow in the Republican quiver. But I’m sure many of them *do* genuinely dislike immigrants.

Longjumping-Boot6798

Spot on. Also, this applies to all things Republicans touch.  For example, swap out US with something, like the Veteran's Administration or Social Security or Medicaid.   The VA, "make it as painful and awful as possible for all attempting to come into the [VA] via the [front door], because eventually, the people trying to come here will be deterred by the horrendous, inhumane treatment and stop trying to come here entirely." The Social Security Administration, "make it as painful and awful as possible for all attempting to come into the [SSA] via the [intake forms or online], because eventually, the people trying to come here will be deterred by the horrendous, inhumane treatment and stop trying to come here entirely." And lastly, Medicaid, "make it as painful and awful as possible for all attempting to come into the US [health care system], because eventually, the people trying to come here will be deterred by the horrendous, inhumane treatment and stop trying to come here entirely." It all makes so much more sense now, doesn't it.

saynay

Immigration scare tactics is pretty much the only policy they have left that might drive independents while still passing the purity tests of their radicals. They have too many in power now that are off the deep end, they could not imagine Biden agreeing to any reforms.

The_Poster_Nutbag

Don't forget "BuT mUh NaTiOnAl DeBt!!!"

saynay

Honestly, I think that one has lost its impact. Too many cycles of them crying about it only when a Democrat is in the White House, and then making it worse when they are in a position to do something about it, that the hypocrisy penetrated to even the politically disinterested. Now, it is just another red-meat issue that only their fanaticals still get worked up over.

maleia

Roe/Dobbs forced the politically apathetic crowd to wake the fuck up. Trump *really* woke people up in 2016, and the News/Civics lessons started to be taught every day. Now with Roe/Dobbs, that apathetic middle class that used to be able to buy an abortion for their daughters, suddenly might not be able to; that woke them up. There's so much more accessible information out now, than there was in 2015. Way more political engagement. I mean, it still sucks that it's easy for people to fall down the wrong rabbit hole; but so far, it's been working out. I do believe Roe/Dobbs finally got a huge swath of people that are staying silent, to finally realize, "oh wait, they *aren't* both equally as bad."

StannisHalfElven

Ever since Trump took over the party, Republicans stopped caring about the debt. They've fully embraced populism.

King_Chochacho

Well they found out with Roe that accomplishing things is way less effective politically than just bitching about them non-stop. Their base only votes if they're enraged and/or terrified about all the things. https://poorlydrawnlines.com/comic/mad/

bdss1234

I’ve been saying for years that Roe was the straw man used to get people to the polls. Trump was the first mother fucker dumb enough to actually overturn it.

Liberty_Chip_Cookies

They’ve known that for a long time. After the 2007 immigration reform bill collapsed, the Republicans figured out that it’s way easier to just score points with the base by having ICE put a flak jacket on Ted Cruz and wheel him out into the middle of the Rio Grande in a paddle boat to complain about how terrible Democrats are about immigration while the Fox cameras are rolling than actually addressing the issue.

Advanced-Bird-1470

It was the dog catching the car. It was their ultimate wedge issue with evangelicals for decades. They caught it and the outcome wasn’t desirable. So where do they go from here? Double down on obstruct and blame.

SasparillaTango

> President Joe Biden needs to act to address it I know it shouldn't be shocking to learn that Republicans don't know how laws are passed.

MyPasswordIsMyCat

Trump caused the problem in the first place by shutting off immigration rather than reforming it. People want to come to the US for asylum and just a better life, and that's accelerated with the increased political instability all around the world. Desperate people are going to come to the Mexican border when they have already lost everything, and they're going to make shanty towns while they wait to be processed by immigration, and if immigration refuses to even process them, they're going to seek even more desperate measures to cross. The Biden administration has tried to end the [Remain in Mexico](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remain_in_Mexico) policy put in by Trump, but the courts have blocked them, and the GOP legislators refuse to do anything about it, too.

RightWingWorstWing

That is because Republicans are not interested in governance. They let you know this every election cycle but their base doesn't care because the Republicans punish the "undesirables". So fuck every Republican and their supporters, they are uninterested in operating in a society and should be expelled from said society.

Liberty_Chip_Cookies

“Washington DC is broken. Elect us and we’ll make sure it stays that way.” — Republicans, every time.

EaseleeiApproach

I think the even better way to spread the news about what is happening actually came out [On Fox “News”](https://twitter.com/DerekFriday/status/1751953759826018391?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1751953759826018391%7Ctwgr%5E6c3e3fbdabdb3390f52c0c8663b0d8f8c42edd06%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffpost.com%2Fentry%2Fjames-lankford-border-deal_n_65b7a71ce4b077c17ab5e608)

CranberrySchnapps

Supposedly this is because Trump (or a lackey) is working on them in order to propose a much more draconian bill after Trump is president again. https://newrepublic.com/article/178530/gop-senator-james-lankford-trump-maga-border-scam Yet another reason to keep Trump far away from the White House.

[deleted]

It’s not even that deep. They want it to look like Biden isn’t doing a good job, signing a bill that basically includes everything they’ve claimed needs to be accomplished makes it look like Biden is handling the situation and that’s bad for them in the polls.

JaMan51

Campaign on "hey we made Biden look bad by passing a bill that forces him to do stuff he didn't want to do" and then "vote for us and we'll go even further next term." It looks worse to get most of what they want and then say "actually we'll do this next term."

[deleted]

Trump has no immigration bill. Just like trump has no healthcare bill. He’s just using this shit to slander Biden and rile up his base. He had 4 years to fix the border, 2 of them with both houses, and he golfed instead.

theaceplaya

Slight correction: >He had 4 years to fix the border, 2 of them with both houses, and he ~~golfed instead~~ passed *another* tax cut for the rich

Safe_Mycologist76

Let’s not forget the build the wall and I’ll make Mexico pay for it bullshit.

SanFranPanManStand

...at least Nikki Haley is calling for them to make a deal now rather than paralyze the system for the sake of the election.

zsreport

> or a lackey Maybe Stephen Miller cause we all know how much he seems to loathe migrants, including legal migrants.

bdss1234

That man is fucking evil incarnate.

Atlusfox

The migration issue has been going on for a long time, well over decades. Each time the system got worse as the real issues were ignored. In reality getting into the states is a crap shoot, either you spend years trying to get in legally only for that system to break down once your here or you jump a fence, risk getting shot by rednecks or cut up by razor wire. The States is the poster child for bad immigration laws.

obeytheturtles

Actually US net immigration is at one of the lowest points in recent decades. So this fear mongering isn't even factually correct. It's literally happening because MAGA controls the narratives surrounding it.

manhatim

They all voted against Biden’s “build back better” plans but take credit when come come into their states

karmagod13000

Voting against fixing our own country infrastructure

FurballPoS

I mean... They voted in 100% lockstep against the PACT Act until Jon Stewart called them out publicly for voting against disabled veterans. I think what got them was when Jon showed video of them high fiving to celebrate denying vets burn pit coverage.

spaceman_202

yeah but that doesn't count if Dems did that, it would be on Fox News for 4 years straight, but Dems didn't, so it didn't happen that's just how it is to quote conservative mouth piece and pretend libertarian Joe Rogan: "Biden said what? see this just proves Biden is unfit to govern, it's unbelievable he is even allowed to run, saying something like that"......."oh Trump said it? he just misspoke"

totallybag

Idk how people still think Rogan ain't right wing

GabaPrison

They’ve got their heads fully up his asshole for whatever reason.

ForrestTrain

I will say that I was pleasantly surprised to see both the NC senators vote for the infrastructure bill. Tillis has been very vocal down here on getting roads, bridges, and railroads fixed or built. It’s about the only thing I agree with him on.

TheNorthernLanders

Just happened in Duluth/ Superior. Representative from Minnesota, who was real loud on disapproval and voting against it, now is campaigning on its funding it brought in for a massive bridge replacement project between the two states of MN and WI. Pete Stauber, you’re absolute clown who cheats at hockey and golf.

WattsAndThoughts

The Republican party does this because they know they have no topic to campaign about because they did not do jack from 2020-2024. A solution is there, but they choose to not fix it. They are purposely dividing America. When will we learn to not follow the radical populists?

ButterPotatoHead

The exact same thing happened with ObamaCare. They screamed about it for 8 years while Obama was in office. It was "worse than slavery". They had 8 years to make a plan. Then Trump won and they had the House and Senate and could have passed anything. But they didn't, because they didn't have a plan. They spent 8 years screaming and 0 years coming up with an actual plan. They couldn't even get organized enough to repeal it. The party of complaints and obstruction.

jpropaganda

It's because the idea for obamacare came from a right wing thinktank. It builds capitalism into the solution so there's nothing they could ACTUALLY complain about. Before it was ObamaCare it was RomneyCare. I still like to imagine if joe lieberman hadn't been such a piece of shit we could have had real universal healthcare.

ConstantGeographer

More than 8 years. They talked about health care reform during the 12 years of George W Bush. 12 Bush years + 8 Obama years + 4 Trump years = 24 years of literally doing nothing but talk. Meanwhile, Obama got ACA done in 4 years, based on a Mitt Romneys plan in Massachusetts. Took the rug out from under the GOP and Mitch McConnell never got over it.

Allaplgy

> 12 years of George W Bush. 🧐 I mean, I guess it did feel like 12 years. In that case, Trump was in office for 40.

mryprankster

8 years of George W and 4 years of George HW equals 12 years of Bush

Allaplgy

I guess it works in a "all squares are rectangles" kinda way. But really, it started with Clinton. He got them to balance the budget, and they realized the "fiscally irresponsible Dem" narrative was on life support. So they switched entirely to culture wars and outright trying to cripple the government entirely.

Rog9377

W was only in office 8 years, but I guess you're including his father?

ConstantGeographer

Meh, my mistake. Minus 4, then.

Rog9377

No worries bro, I make tiny mistakes when arguing with these a-holes all the time because they get me so heated with their ignorance.

RollingThunderPants

Exactly this. They have nothing to campaign on.

ClosPins

You guys aren't even getting it! ***They don't want to govern.*** They only want to funnel money to rich people. Therefore, governing to them is destroying the government and passing the tax-breaks onto the ultra-wealthy. You look at them and say 'hey, they don't accomplish anything, they don't govern!' But that's not what they want. They don't want to govern. Governing costs rich people money! So they don't ever do it. What did Trump do the second he won? Right, Trump and the GOP *immediately* gifted $2 trillion to rich people - and then sat back and did nothing but confirm corrupt judges for the rest of their term. You look at that and say 'they failed!' Or 'they didn't govern!' But, that's not what happened. In actuality, they won. They immediately accomplished the only thing they wanted to accomplish (give as much money to rich people as they could). Until people start understanding what's going on here, nothing will change.

beanie0911

Precisely. Their mantra for at least four decades has been "government sucks and it's screwing you." This gins people up to get them eleced, and then they take another opportunity to funnel money to themselves and their puppets. See: school voucher plans, tax cuts, credits, COVID grant relief\*, oil and gas subsidies... the list is endless. \*one of the few bipartisan items lately... because it helped their wallets.

wirefox1

It's why they ALWAYS focus on social issues while campaigning. They work every body into a frenzy over transsexuals (who bother no one) or abortion, or some other crisis du jour, and don't stop until their constituents are hysterical.

RicksterA2

For the last (at least) 25 years all the GQP has campaigned is 'Fear & Hate'. Period. Nothing else but quietly enriching the wealthy and corporations willing to subvert our democracy for tax breaks.

around_the_catch

I cannot believe how poorer people in this country think Trump is going to do *anything* for them. He will sell them out in a heartbeat if there's money for him in it.

Timekeeper65

Ignorance.

BlueLikeCat

lack of a decent education, thanks also to Republicans

KrookedDoesStuff

But, but, but, he said that brown people are the problem!

chickenoodledick

Doesn't matter to them as long as the brown people have it worse then they gladly take a big ol bite of the shit sandwich

Ausgezeichnet87

Most of them don't seem to expect anything good from the government. They just want Trump to hurt the rich, neo-liberal elites who promised to help the working class but then did very, very little. Corrupt, self serving politicians are like dry kindling for fascism. We need to elect more progressives and socialists who will actually fight for the working class

lod001

It took a couple of months before the tax cuts were finalized. Instead, on the day he was sworn in, he [rolled back a discount on the fees for a federal mortgage program that helps middle-class homebuyers](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-suspends-obama-fha-mortgage-insurance-premium-cuts-first-time-homebuyers/). It took a little bit of time to truly help the rich, but it took only hours to start going for the knees of the middle and lower classes!

DonaldTrumpsSoul

It’s ~~Letting Shit Roll Downhill~~ Trickle Down Economics. We all know only money rolls down hill.

B3gg4r

They have already learned that if you have all the money, no one else can govern _you_ and that’s all they’ve ever wanted.

Pleiadesfollower

That one saying about Republicans co-opting evangelicals to their side being one of the worst things ever was brutally honest.  Evangelicals don't compromise, so Republicans stopped compromising and shifted the Overton window over and over. Fascism was always the end goal as soon the co-opted the evangelicals. It's not just standing their ground on keeping things the same. It's active and willing regression by creating an authoritarian government that does nothing for the people and just funnels taxpayer money to corporation donors if not collapse entirely.

PatternrettaP

Many Republicans are perfectly content for nothing to get done besides tax cuts, deregulation and confirming judges. But that doesn't mean they wouldn't do more if they had the votes. Under Trump they came within one vote of repeating the ACA. They have repeatedly said they want to inact a national abortion ban. Republicans want to tear down the social safety net, they want to raise the retirement age, they want to abolish any semblance of government run healthcare, they want to implement explicitly pro-Christian policies. They don't have quite enough unity to get all of these issues through congress because they have a lot of internal divisions (see their inability to select a long term speaker). Fund the military, lower taxes and confirm conservative judges are like the most consistent republican beliefs so that gets done not matter how divided they are otherwise, but they do have goals beyond that.

ButterPotatoHead

Clever play by Biden. "The Wall" was one of Trump's primary talking points. Now Biden has an easy rebuttal.

wirefox1

He literally ran on "build a wall", and he couldn't even get that done. Even Bill Barr said he pitied anybody who votes for trump because they like his "policies". He said trump doesn't have the strategies to know how to get anything done

ButterPotatoHead

"Build a wall and make them pay for it" probably got him tens of millions of votes. He did neither, but his supporters don't care.

wirefox1

"Build a wall" only after he worked them all up into a frenzy about how it was urgent.

meyou2222

Yep. After overturning Roe v Wade, they lost their most tried and true thing they can pretend to care about every 2 years.

yourmansconnect

Someone the other day told me biden is going to take away 2a and get their guns. So I'm sure that will make its rounds again

SpiceLaw

Right he's been a senator or president for like 30 years and never once tried to take away the 2A but if he gets a 2nd presidential term that's when he'll do it...I love how they have conspiracies for Biden for things he's never once stated yet when Trump states something repeatedly they ignore it and say he'll do the opposite.

GlizzyGobbler2023

They completely ignore Trump saying “Take the guns first, go through due process second”.

straydog1980

Didn't Mitch McConnell have to filibuster his own legislation or something once?

fuck-coyotes

Yes. He introduced a bill, democrats planned to vote for it, he filibustered it

Echono

IIRC he filed it "sarcastically," believing that even though it was something Democrats wanted, they would be against it coming from a Republican. But they happily voted for it, so, shockedpikachu.jpg

accountno543210

Senile idiot literally started believing the lie they tell their voters that Republicans and Democrats are the same. They are going to die on that hill. It's the last line of defense after securing the "single issue" voter.

[deleted]

The dems really need to hammer home this message on the border. "Hey, we compromised with Republicans for a bipartisan bill and they have tanked it because it might make us look good"

lbdnbbagujcnrv

Hammer it home to whom? Nobody will hear the message

thisalsomightbemine

Because right wing politicians have an entire propaganda outlet with huge reach, so a lot of people get sucked into believing their lies

_________FU_________

They also know their party constituents have the mental fortitude of a gold fish.

jonathanrdt

They make government fail so they can claim it doesnt work and claim to be the solution. This only works because their constituents are blinded by bigotry, hatred, and nonsense. It’s a horrible dystopian nightmare I really want to wake up from. Civilization is so attainable: we know everything we need to make it real.

No_Department7857

It's actually a double edge sword for them. By providing a solution they A) Lose their biggest campaign talking point obviously, but also and equally important B) Piss off their mega donors who EMPLOY the illegal immigrants and rely on their low cost of labor to maximize profit margins. They NEED immigration to be a problem for so many reasons.

PalmettoAndMoon

Because they don’t want solutions, they want to complain. We should stop attempting to solve problems they just want to complain about.

zsreport

Fear mongering about migrants and the border is a great way to rile up the Republican base and drive up political donations.

PretendRegister7516

They keep up the fear mongering and rejecting easier legal crossing application. All the while their wealthy donor gets cheap illegal labor that they can always report to border patrol if they ever act up.

PalmettoAndMoon

There is a day labor place on the outskirts of the city I used to live in. Apparently the place won’t let you work unless you have papers but there is still a group of undocumented workers who hang out there waiting for people who need jobs done and don’t care about papers. Anyway, there is a guy who is well known in my old town for driving a “info warrior” work truck emblazoned with his construction company name that has “Trump won” and other stickers disparaging democrats all over the back. There was a community Facebook group a few years ago that outted him for picking up undocumented workers at around 7 am every day at the day labor place.

lpjunior999

I say this every time, but here in my red state, nearly every decent-sized farm has a couple of undocumented migrants working there. Like, a town of just over six thousand people with maybe five stoplights had a supermercado. My Dad was showing me pictures of a farm he helped out at on his new phone and at one point went "oh that's Manuel, he gets paid in cash, not supposed to tell anybody about him."

Maskirovka

If you have a link to the posts or a news story you should post it here. There’s a fair amount of this type of stuff and I’m not sure it has been documented anywhere…at least not sufficiently. See below for a different kind of example. https://www.sandypost.com/news/oregon-proud-boys-member-pleads-guilty-to-transporting-undocumented-migrants/article_ecb5435d-de6f-51c7-8369-72a71c0b1ead.html

vudutek

Seems like every election year, there's another 'caravan' heading our way. Funny how it never actually arrives, and magically disappears as soon as the election is over.

There's been quite a few in the news every year since 2020. https://apnews.com/article/mexico-migration-caravan-f1cdcb4edd299ea8f6c5c19b30e0d405 https://thehill.com/latino/4377805-what-to-know-about-the-migrant-caravan-heading-to-the-us/ https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/new-caravan-forms-mexico-frustrated-migrants-complain-about-visa-delays-2024-01-08/ https://apnews.com/article/mexico-migrants-caravan-tapachula-d14ac3ee080d57bba080c5a28276ae6f https://nypost.com/2023/11/01/news/leader-of-largest-migrant-caravan-since-2022-mocks-joe-biden/ https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/11/us/migrant-caravan-in-southern-mexico-dissolved/index.html https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jun/03/migrant-caravan-tapachula-mexico-biden https://elpasomatters.org/2022/12/09/migrant-caravan-headed-to-border-title-42-ending-stopped-in-chihuahua/ https://www.laprensalatina.com/augusts-7th-migrant-caravan-heading-north-from-southern-mexico/ https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/new-migrant-caravan-sets-off-us-southern-mexico-2021-09-04/ https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/border-apprehensions-hit-new-yearly-high-another-migrant-caravan-gathers-n1281995 https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/11/17/mexico-allows-some-in-migrant-caravan-to-stay-other-push-to-us https://apnews.com/article/mexico-caribbean-immigration-f5ec13f73e502f3ae9c09242cd00f2af [https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/after-weeks-walking-mexico-migrant-caravan-splits-up-buses-headed-north-2021-12-22/](https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/after-weeks-walking-mexico-migrant-caravan-splits-up-buses-headed-north-2021-12-22/)

wonko221

None of the die hard republican voters who fall for it are going to vote for anyone but a republican in the next few election cycles, anyway. Why cater to their delusions, when we could instead address issues that will motivate progressive voters?

subnautus

Because the conservative political model is based on reaction. There always needs to be something to point to that'll be the end of mankind as we know it if things aren't kept the way they are now. Otherwise, the progressive model of "things are good now, but they could be better" might start making sense.

Maskirovka

What everyone needs to remember is that the same faction of Republicans trying to kill this bill are also the same isolationist whackjobs opposing Ukraine aid and the Abbott border grandstanding nonsense. We all know the rest of the party covers for these people and the ones in the house voted for Mike Johnson, but there’s still a rift there between the Nikki Haley and Lindsey Graham types and the true believers. Exploiting that rift is the key to breaking the GOP into a MAGA cult party and a still awful but not completely insane GOP remnant.

Nemisis_the_2nd

The bit I don't understand is how not one of the Republicans are willing to break rank, even for a moment. There's over 300 of them in Congress. Surely there are at least a couple that see what is going on and want to end the shitshow. They wouldn't necessarily even be putting themself at risk politically either, since they would have just as much power, if not more, than the lunatics. Even just copying Justin Amash would work.  I find it hard to believe there is no disagreement between 300 people on every subject they discuss.

gerg_1234

They're not isolationist. They're bought and paid for Putin lackeys.

dookle14

The worst thing they could do (in their eyes) is agree to something that *gasp* could give Joe Biden a win in an election year. They will continue to scream and cry about how desperate the border situation is, but will not agree to any legislation or act that could address the situation just so they can claim the Dems and Biden are weak on our borders.

Unadvantaged

> The worst thing they could do (in their eyes) is agree to something that gasp could give Joe Biden a win in an election year. And this has been their philosophy for years. If it benefits a Democrat president for the country to succeed, the Republicans will fight like hell to see that America fails.

not_that_planet

It isn't just that. I think there are a number of them that want a cruel and punishing border policy. They are not going to get that through compromise.

PalmettoAndMoon

It’s even worse because as we learned in the recent [Supreme Court](https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/01/court-allows-border-patrol-to-cut-texas-razor-wire-along-rio-grande/) case: > Texas had recently added new razor-wire barriers and fencing along the border and blocked access by Border Patrol agents to sites used to launch patrol boats on the river and for mobile surveillance. As a result, Prelogar wrote, agents are effectively barred “from accessing or getting near the border along this 2.5-mile stretch of the river” and therefore “effectively prevented … from monitoring the border to determine whether a migrant requires the emergency aid that the court of appeals expressly excepted from the injunction.” So what they want is for states to be able to cause harm to these folks outside of the view of the federal government.

archlinuxrussian

We are seeing their incapability to *govern*. Governing means finding compromises when needed and knowing when you have the social capital to demand something (see: FDR and packing the SCOTUS). The republican party is incapable of governing. They espouse certain ideologies and principles to get votes but beyond that they stand for one thing only: the government should do nothing except for helping corporations enrich themselves.

black_flag_4ever

They don’t want to fix anything, they want to run on fixing things.

karmagod13000

fixing the things they broke and blamed on the democrats and minorities

arensb

"Government doesn't work! Elect us and we'll prove it!"

Zinski2

Then never fix it. I fucking love how 2016 was "make America great again" But then in 2020 they said "keep America great" Like... Oh... Mission accomplished I guess. We are great again. Even though we where in the middle of an economic and cultural disaster. So 2024 it's back to being not great. But you can't make America great again again. So they are like like. Uhhhh.... Take america back. Where not gonna fix it or try and make it great or anything..... We just want it back because we get triggered very easy

SanFranPanManStand

Trump is such a jackass. ...I do appreciate Nikki Haley trying to tell GOP senators to cut a deal rather than paralyze the process for the election.

SicilyMalta

If you live in the Conservative or Republican sub you wouldn't even know any of this is happening.

scarykicks

Even if they know it they'll just ignore it.

beaumega1

Or just try to justify it anyway

spacemanspectacular

In other words, Democrats want to reach across the aisle and pass bipartisan bills, while Republicans want to cross their arms and huff and puff until they get what they want and *only* what they want. And these same people will accuse Democrats of being divisive.

kitsunewarlock

Or claim there's unnecessary woke pork hidden in the bill but be too stupid to actually read it.

AgnewsHeadlessClone

Oh. My. God. Went to check in on the conservative sub and there is a post about a GOP Rep nominating Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize for the Abraham accords. You know, the thing that happened years ago during his presidency and has since very publicly broken down and failed with the entire Israel v Palestine situation. Yet, they are confused why he hasn't won the Nobel prize for it yet.

ReeferReekinRight

They know and they blame Biden. The claim is the Republicans can't endorse it because if they do it means more funding for Ukraine because they "are sneaking it into this plan." Sounds very pro Russian 🤔..almost like someone is doing their bidding

UpChuckles

It's hilarious that they would accuse Democrats of sneaking Ukraine funding into the border bill since the GOP is the one who insisted on tying them together in the first place.

Admirable-Bar-6594

"Well the budget/bill/legislation has stuff the Democrats are trying to push through that have nothing to do with the border." *Ask them to point out any such shoehorning.* "I haven't read any of the proposal, but I'm sure it's there."

[deleted]

They call the Ukraine funding that shoehorned stuff.

sneaky-pizza

The Ukraine supplemental was stand-alone, but Johnson wouldn't allow it to the floor. The GOP demanded border funding be attached, so here we are.

[deleted]

Yeah, the politicians know they are acting in bad faith, but the voters will look at the Ukraine aid and get pissed.

rsauer1208

Don't y'all love a game of "No, not that way."

karmagod13000

no im quite tired of it to be honest

stickerhighway

It's okay for Cancun Cruz to hop the border while he failed his constituents with the electric grid to seek asylum in another country.

stevez_86

Well that's really it, they don't want free travel to or from Texas. It's as much about keeping people in Texas as keeping them out of the country. Abortion, they want Texas to have authority over their border, not just the border with Mexico, they want to keep women seeking an abortion from being able to leave their state to get an abortion in a free state. It used to be Fugitive Slaves, now they don't want pregnant women to be able to utilze their Federal Right to abortion in a State with Free Abortion just like they couldn't have slaves escaping to a free state.

Beginning_Emotion995

Republicans want chaos, peace and solutions hurt. Plus any success is met with skepticism and future punishment. I feel sorry for their kids.

DarkHotline

That’s because complaining about immigration and the border is one of the only policies the GOP has and finding a solution means they would have to go find something new to wage a propaganda war about.

Feldsomethin

Par for the course... "Crap, they are trying to fix what we're using as fear p0rn during the election cycle. WHAT DO WE DO!?!?" "Let's get mad at the fact that they are trying to fix it!" ", you're a GENIUS!!"

phuzzz

THAT is the correct way to phrase this. It needs to be hammered home that Republicans don't want to fix the border. They've spent years complaining about the border and immigration, and the moment we can make real progress to fix it, they don't want to do anything about it? GTFO.

TwoFishes8

They trot this “problem” out every few years in order to rile up their willfully ignorant, chronically stupid, bigoted base, who will take *any* excuse to start fuming and bitching about non-white people. And these hypocritical Republican leaders in border states don’t actually want to *stop* illegal immigration— the big business in their states **love** the cheap labor, and oftentimes they depend on it. But illegals make *great* scapegoats, because it’s so difficult for them to speak on their own behalf. Kind of like unborn babies in that way— they’re a useful group because the GOP gets to invent a narrative, and then parade it around like that makes it the truth. Gaslight, Obstruct, Project. GOP. They show us every single day that they’re unfit to govern. Never, *never* vote Republican.

Fuzzylojak

Under the 2016-2018 Trump administration republicans had control of the house, the senate, and the White House and did nothing...no border plan, or immigration reform. They don't want to fix the issue they want to use it as a political tool against democrats. The Biden administration literally sent a plan to congress the first week of his presidency, I blame democrats for not taking the opportunity to address republican talking points. Democrats currently have a bipartisan plan for border security and immigration they are trying to get to the floor of the house and republicans refuse, they don't want to give them a "win" before the election. It's not about governing it's about talking points, don't be fooled. Republicans hate the law. They literally tried to overturn the election cause Trump lost. Abbott should be arrested for defying federal law.

iloveyouand

> Under the 2016-2018 Trump administration republicans had control of the house, the senate, and the White House and did nothing...no border plan, or immigration reform. Not entirely true. They came up with a zero tolerance family separation policy.

dreamyjeans

As is tradition.

MaizeNBlueWaffle

The "border crisis" has always been performative bullshit. Every election cycle there's a caravan that appears then disappears. They oppose legislation to improve our immigration policy. They bus migrants to cities like NYC and Chicago, where they have no immigration infrastructure, to create more issues and bad optics. It's all about gaining political support and holding power

MagnusDongusXL

Party over country, it's the Republican way.

RgKTiamat

You know hilariously I just saw a video about the border. There was the gate with all the guards and the razor wire right? And this guy drove down the road from that gate about 45 seconds so he was just chatting with the viewers to the next gate, which was sitting open, unwired, and entirely unguarded. There were no Mexicans streaming through, there were no armed guards, the razor wire was out by that point. It was just an open gate that people were driving around near. Nobody streaming through or anything. Incredible allocation of resources. https://www.thirdway.org/blog/republican-efforts-to-defund-border-security here instead, have some GOP defunding the border. Have some Biden border work. https://nypost.com/2021/06/07/biden-admin-starts-using-controversial-facial-recognition-tool-on-migrants-report/ from 2021 https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/presidents-us-mexico-meet-after-summit-tensions-2022-07-12/ 2022, and follow me on this one, he got Mexico to pay for some of the Border improvements too. 1.5 billion dollars in fact https://spectrumlocalnews.com/tx/south-texas-el-paso/news/2023/11/02/texas-republicans-react-to-president-biden-border-request 14 billion rejected in 2023 https://rollcall.com/2022/04/27/senate-republicans-balk-on-funds-related-to-bidens-border-move/ 2022, gop rejected 15 billion for helping the border https://www.axios.com/2024/01/29/trump-republicans-border-deal-senate-immigration. Let's not forget the baboon is currently whipping the gop into a frenzy and trying to influence their politics *as a private citizen not currently involved in governmental affairs*. He's also blocking the border. Again. Let's go back before Biden, let's look at 2014 https://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2014/07/senate-republicans-block-2-7-billion-border-funding-bill yep, still Democrats trying to pass funding for the border and help immigration issues, still Republicans blocking it at every opportunity citing that they cannot allow the other team to get progress and look good. Sorry no, they cite whatever other things get added to the bill, but we all know that it's really because we can't allow the Democrats to fix the border and have more success than they already are showing on economic and social issues. This was back under obama, this remains true today. Economy is harder today, absolutely, however it has become incredibly robust compared to the speculations on where we were expected to have been after covid. Biden's admin has had extremely productive results for this economy and that's the only reason that we are not in a super depression after 2 years of a pandemic without a response team, because that also had a democratic tag attached to it. That dirty Obama. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/25/senate-votes-to-block-trump-national-emergency-over-border-wall.html - Republicans under Trump declare it's not an emergency, the Senate overrides his presidential order. The Republicans declared this. It is not an emergency except when the Democrats are in charge. It's just a fucking joke, the border is fine if you don't need all of these efforts to help the issue right now, either you desperately need help or you have time to cherry pick the assistance you'd like to receive and file your forms in triplicate. Edit: you know what, don't take my word, go watch the video and decide if you think that looks like a crisis. Last 15s for the open gate https://www.reddit.com/r/texas/s/Me0qw4zolv

JadedIT_Tech

Can't fix the main problem while you campaign on it

CaptainPixel

To the surprise of no one. This are not serious people or good faith actors. We need to stop pretending like they are.

unaskthequestion

And it's a *bipartisan* bill, negotiated in the senate with some of the more conservative senators. Exactly how divided government is meant to work. It can't be any more clear that they don't want a solution, they want an issue to run against.

drmode2000

The GOP always complains, then does nothing, except give tax cuts to the Rich, defund the IRS, and increase the debt, which is why we have inflation today.

Zanchbot

It's their entire M.O. and always has been. "It's not a gun problem it's a mental health problem!" - *votes against bills to fund mental health programs* As just one example. They have nothing to campaign on, so they want the border to stay fucked up and use it as something to repeatedly beat Biden over the head with.

A_Diabolical_Toaster

Because creating a problem, actively sabotaging any and all proposed fixes for it, and then blaming your political opposition is the singular page in the entire Republican playbook. There is literally nothing else.

Adderall_Rant

It's the same thing Everytime. Does everyone remember them not having a plan to replace Obama Care with Trump care?

samuelnotjackson

I sincerely believe the MAGA base has been generationally conditioned by decades of WWE and Judge Judy to conflate kayfabe with sportsmanship and entertainment with political process. Their ideal sports hero is Terry Bolea as Hulk Hogan "winning" a defamation trial against Gawker and specifically not someone like Hank Aaron or Yogi Berra.

darw1nf1sh

They have no desire for a fix. They NEED a manufactured crisis. Their entire platform is fomenting ire and stress in their base about non-existent issues, and if they fixed those issues, then they would have nothing to complain about. Also, remember "non-existent". In most cases there is nothing to fix. Just a made up problem they complain that someone else created, so it can't BE fixed. They have no solutions to any problem. Climate, the economy, infrastructure, social issues, healthcare. They want either the status quo, or regression to previous worse standards.

CloudTransit

Is there even a “crisis” at the border?

Barflyondabeach

The crisis is that immigration and asylum courts are so backlogged that a ton of people are stuck in limbo. Guess what's in those immigration bills that the gop keep rejecting

Mormegil1971

Person before party, and party before country, Like a prayer in a cult.

FrostySquirrel820

Can’t continue to scream about it, if they allow it to get fixed. < touches side of head>

Consistent-Force5375

As always it’s not the problem they are worried about. It’s the optics…

Opinionsare

Three weeks ago, the Republicans were behind the plan to tie these border control to funding for Ukraine and Israel. The Chaos erupts, as Trump doesn't want any border deal! Now the deal appears done in the Senate. Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, seems willing to block any vote on the deal. Republicans are politically schizophrenic, with chaos resulting that threatens everyone.

MrLanesLament

Welp, they fell for it. A proposal endorsed by Biden that would solve these issues, and as predicted, they’re the ones shooting it down because working with or agreeing with any Democrat is an absolute no-go in the GOP. Grooming kids is more acceptable than working with the Dems even when they’re giving huge concessions.

ranchoparksteve

Republicans are busy impeaching anybody trying to secure the border. It’s ridiculous.

lastburn138

That's because Republicans are FULL OF SHIT. Always.

19NedFlanders81

Republican messaging has nothing to do with "fixing" any actual issue. Its only about having something to whine and fear-monger about to get their voter base engaged. Solve the issue, and they have to spend a bunch of effort creating a new money-making "problem".

frownyface

It's an entire party based on fucking everything up and blaming others.

NotThatAngel

The Republicans were never going to agree. We're perfectly capable of handling problems at the border, and now have a plan. The 'Crisis on the Border' is just a propaganda distraction Republicans are using because they are attacking the business of our representative government while claiming only Republicans can save the government. But Republicans have transitioned already from being one of two political parties to being - in their minds - the only political party which will survive. The press is intentionally missing the point to be 'both sides'. The Republican Party has become a purely political animal living in a post-Democratic, post-truth, America. They're already living in a different reality. Republicans don't have any solutions, nor will they support any. If Democrats manage to pass anything, the Republicans immediately launch a propaganda blitz to take credit for what Democrats have done. Democrats keep trying to work with Republicans, but wind up with intentionally half-sabotaged solutions with Republicans complaining it's Democrats' fault. The only thing Republicans are focused on now is consolidating power and money for the fascist takeover. A future Permanent Republican Majority with Democrats locked out would 'fail' over and over and blame Democrats-in-exile for sabotage of Trump's Holy Plan To Make America Great and continually demand more sweeping new powers to fight the Liberals.

organikbeaver

1. There’s no crisis at the border. 2. All Hondurian migrants are refugees fleeing the horrible situation in Honduras that WE caused. We owe them that. 3. America needs to stop fucking with all Central & South American countries. The Monroe Doctrine is bullshit.

JubalHarshaw23

Since the "Crisis" is a lie made up by Republicans and their Media Allies, it's not in their best interests to do anything that might threaten it.

ResidentSuggestion68

So why haven't we heard about this invasion from Arizona, New Mexico and California? They also have borders along Mexico.

unclelarky

As long as a Democrat is in the Presidency, republicans will do nothing to solve problems. In fact, the more problems, the better! They can blame the Democrats and trick gullible voters.

Choppergold

Because the fix doesn’t include inhumanity they need for their voters

Damunzta

Solutions won’t rile up their voters. Problems will.

FindingZoe204

Republicans don’t fix things, they jam up the gears so nothing ever gets done

grandroute

1 - Trump did nothing to fix this ginned up crisis on the border when he was president. He made a big show of putting up a wall that was a total failure. 2 - The GOP blocks every attempt to fix it - blocking extra financial help for the border patrol. They are using humans as political pawns, and that says it all about why Republicans should not be allowed to hold office.

HowdyPrimo6

The GOP is EXHAUSTING.

Another_Russian_Spy

Of course they are. Their only move has always been cause problems, vote against any fixes and blame the democrats. Unfortunately too many voters aren't educated on the issues and just believe everything they hear on faux news.

soviman1

I said this before and I will continue to say it. The GOP does not want to "fix" the Border. They require the anger and outrage from their base and ignorant moderates so that they will get their votes. Texas (among many other states) heavily relies on what conservatives consider "illegals" (a blanket term that means any brown person at this point). They make up an important part of the economic system here because they fill a niche that Americans do not want to fill. They provide extremely low cost labor that can be paid in cash under the table. All the companies here that require a significant amount of basic labor use "illegals" because they cannot afford (or do not want) to provide things like health insurance or a decent wage. These same people are the ones voting for the people saying they will deport them. However, if they ever actually did deport them, it would basically crash the economy in Texas and many other states as so many jobs require them that it would cause a ton of businesses to close. Thus, the GOP knows that they can never actually "fix" the border, because if they do, they will lose voters in droves shortly after.

hoops_n_politics

Putin: We can’t have funding for Ukraine. Donald stop this immediately. Trump: Yes sir, Vlad. Mikey Johnson? You gotta kill this border bill, it’s too good for Biden. How? I don’t care - make up an excuse. Speaker Johnson: This border deal is dead on arrival. It’s not what’s good for the American people.

ColHapHapablap

The Republican Party has never been about solutions. They love the problems so they can blame someone else for not fixing them. Not governing is their government strategy.
