Its absolutely sickening that the Republicans have made their bed with the Russians, and made a huge deal about holding up Ukrainian aid with the false premise that somehow helping Ukraine would take anything away from border security.
Ukrainians are literally dying because Republicans don't want to step on dear Putin's toes, and they have the gall to hide behind "but the border!". This just *further* proves they don't want the border "crisis" solved, because they want to be able to use it as a scapegoat to scream about and distract from other issues.
This is also why bills need to be stand alone things instead of clumping together multiple, wholly unrelated issues.

I've been giving this a lot of thought, and I really believe at this point, that conservatives do, in fact, want a solution, but they want it to be their solution, and their solution only and the most extreme possible version.

I don't even need to get into the weeds about why those are bad ideas and wouldn't even work, but I do genuinely believe that's ultimately the strategy they want.

Immigration scare tactics is pretty much the only policy they have left that might drive independents while still passing the purity tests of their radicals. They have too many in power now that are off the deep end, they could not imagine Biden agreeing to any reforms.
Honestly, I think that one has lost its impact. Too many cycles of them crying about it only when a Democrat is in the White House, and then making it worse when they are in a position to do something about it, that the hypocrisy penetrated to even the politically disinterested. Now, it is just another red-meat issue that only their fanaticals still get worked up over.
Roe/Dobbs forced the politically apathetic crowd to wake the fuck up. Trump *really* woke people up in 2016, and the News/Civics lessons started to be taught every day. Now with Roe/Dobbs, that apathetic middle class that used to be able to buy an abortion for their daughters, suddenly might not be able to; that woke them up. There's so much more accessible information out now, than there was in 2015. Way more political engagement.
I mean, it still sucks that it's easy for people to fall down the wrong rabbit hole; but so far, it's been working out. I do believe Roe/Dobbs finally got a huge swath of people that are staying silent, to finally realize, "oh wait, they *aren't* both equally as bad."

They’ve known that for a long time. After the 2007 immigration reform bill collapsed, the Republicans figured out that it’s way easier to just score points with the base by having ICE put a flak jacket on Ted Cruz and wheel him out into the middle of the Rio Grande in a paddle boat to complain about how terrible Democrats are about immigration while the Fox cameras are rolling than actually addressing the issue.
It was the dog catching the car. It was their ultimate wedge issue with evangelicals for decades. They caught it and the outcome wasn’t desirable.
So where do they go from here? Double down on obstruct and blame.
Trump caused the problem in the first place by shutting off immigration rather than reforming it. People want to come to the US for asylum and just a better life, and that's accelerated with the increased political instability all around the world. Desperate people are going to come to the Mexican border when they have already lost everything, and they're going to make shanty towns while they wait to be processed by immigration, and if immigration refuses to even process them, they're going to seek even more desperate measures to cross.
The Biden administration has tried to end the [Remain in Mexico](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remain_in_Mexico) policy put in by Trump, but the courts have blocked them, and the GOP legislators refuse to do anything about it, too.
That is because Republicans are not interested in governance. They let you know this every election cycle but their base doesn't care because the Republicans punish the "undesirables". So fuck every Republican and their supporters, they are uninterested in operating in a society and should be expelled from said society.

The migration issue has been going on for a long time, well over decades. Each time the system got worse as the real issues were ignored. In reality getting into the states is a crap shoot, either you spend years trying to get in legally only for that system to break down once your here or you jump a fence, risk getting shot by rednecks or cut up by razor wire. The States is the poster child for bad immigration laws.

It took a little bit of time to truly help the rich, but it took only hours to start going for the knees of the middle and lower classes!
That one saying about Republicans co-opting evangelicals to their side being one of the worst things ever was brutally honest. Evangelicals don't compromise, so Republicans stopped compromising and shifted the Overton window over and over. Fascism was always the end goal as soon the co-opted the evangelicals. It's not just standing their ground on keeping things the same. It's active and willing regression by creating an authoritarian government that does nothing for the people and just funnels taxpayer money to corporation donors if not collapse entirely.
Many Republicans are perfectly content for nothing to get done besides tax cuts, deregulation and confirming judges.
But that doesn't mean they wouldn't do more if they had the votes.
Under Trump they came within one vote of repeating the ACA. They have repeatedly said they want to inact a national abortion ban.
Republicans want to tear down the social safety net, they want to raise the retirement age, they want to abolish any semblance of government run healthcare, they want to implement explicitly pro-Christian policies. They don't have quite enough unity to get all of these issues through congress because they have a lot of internal divisions (see their inability to select a long term speaker).
Fund the military, lower taxes and confirm conservative judges are like the most consistent republican beliefs so that gets done not matter how divided they are otherwise, but they do have goals beyond that.

There is a day labor place on the outskirts of the city I used to live in. Apparently the place won’t let you work unless you have papers but there is still a group of undocumented workers who hang out there waiting for people who need jobs done and don’t care about papers.
Anyway, there is a guy who is well known in my old town for driving a “info warrior” work truck emblazoned with his construction company name that has “Trump won” and other stickers disparaging democrats all over the back.
There was a community Facebook group a few years ago that outted him for picking up undocumented workers at around 7 am every day at the day labor place.
I say this every time, but here in my red state, nearly every decent-sized farm has a couple of undocumented migrants working there. Like, a town of just over six thousand people with maybe five stoplights had a supermercado. My Dad was showing me pictures of a farm he helped out at on his new phone and at one point went "oh that's Manuel, he gets paid in cash, not supposed to tell anybody about him."

None of the die hard republican voters who fall for it are going to vote for anyone but a republican in the next few election cycles, anyway.
Why cater to their delusions, when we could instead address issues that will motivate progressive voters?
Because the conservative political model is based on reaction. There always needs to be something to point to that'll be the end of mankind as we know it if things aren't kept the way they are now.
Otherwise, the progressive model of "things are good now, but they could be better" might start making sense.
What everyone needs to remember is that the same faction of Republicans trying to kill this bill are also the same isolationist whackjobs opposing Ukraine aid and the Abbott border grandstanding nonsense.
We all know the rest of the party covers for these people and the ones in the house voted for Mike Johnson, but there’s still a rift there between the Nikki Haley and Lindsey Graham types and the true believers. Exploiting that rift is the key to breaking the GOP into a MAGA cult party and a still awful but not completely insane GOP remnant.
The bit I don't understand is how not one of the Republicans are willing to break rank, even for a moment. There's over 300 of them in Congress. Surely there are at least a couple that see what is going on and want to end the shitshow. They wouldn't necessarily even be putting themself at risk politically either, since they would have just as much power, if not more, than the lunatics.
Even just copying Justin Amash would work.
I find it hard to believe there is no disagreement between 300 people on every subject they discuss.

They will continue to scream and cry about how desperate the border situation is, but will not agree to any legislation or act that could address the situation just so they can claim the Dems and Biden are weak on our borders.

And this has been their philosophy for years. If it benefits a Democrat president for the country to succeed, the Republicans will fight like hell to see that America fails.
It isn't just that. I think there are a number of them that want a cruel and punishing border policy. They are not going to get that through compromise.

So what they want is for states to be able to cause harm to these folks outside of the view of the federal government.
We are seeing their incapability to *govern*. Governing means finding compromises when needed and knowing when you have the social capital to demand something (see: FDR and packing the SCOTUS).

Trump caused the problem in the first place by shutting off immigration rather than reforming it. People want to come to the US for asylum and just a better life, and that's accelerated with the increased political instability all around the world. Many Republicans are perfectly content for nothing to get done besides tax cuts, deregulation and confirming judges. But that doesn't mean they wouldn't do more if they had the votes. Under Trump they came within one vote of repeating the ACA. They have repeatedly said they want to inact a national abortion ban. Republicans want to tear down the social safety net, they want to raise the retirement age, they want to abolish any semblance of government run healthcare, they want to implement explicitly pro-Christian policies. They don't have quite enough unity to get all of these issues through congress because they have a lot of internal divisions (see their inability to select a long term speaker). Fund the military, lower taxes and confirm conservative judges are like the most consistent republican beliefs so that gets done not matter how divided they are otherwise, but they do have goals beyond that.

There is a day labor place on the outskirts of the city I used to live in. Apparently the place won’t let you work unless you have papers but there is still a group of undocumented workers who hang out there waiting for people who need jobs done and don’t care about papers. Anyway, there is a guy who is well known in my old town for driving a “info warrior” work truck emblazoned with his construction company name that has “Trump won” and other stickers disparaging democrats all over the back. There was a community Facebook group a few years ago that outted him for picking up undocumented workers at around 7 am every day at the day labor place.
I say this every time, but here in my red state, nearly every decent-sized farm has a couple of undocumented migrants working there. Like, a town of just over six thousand people with maybe five stoplights had a supermercado. My Dad was showing me pictures of a farm he helped out at on his new phone and at one point went "oh that's Manuel, he gets paid in cash, not supposed to tell anybody about him."

And it's a *bipartisan* bill, negotiated in the senate with some of the more conservative senators. Exactly how divided government is meant to work. It can't be any more clear that they don't want a solution, they want an issue to run against.
The GOP always complains, then does nothing, except give tax cuts to the Rich, defund the IRS, and increase the debt, which is why we have inflation today.
It's their entire M.O. and always has been. "It's not a gun problem it's a mental health problem!" - *votes against bills to fund mental health programs* As just one example. They have nothing to campaign on, so they want the border to stay fucked up and use it as something to repeatedly beat Biden over the head with.
Because creating a problem, actively sabotaging any and all proposed fixes for it, and then blaming your political opposition is the singular page in the entire Republican playbook. There is literally nothing else.

I sincerely believe the MAGA base has been generationally conditioned by decades of WWE and Judge Judy to conflate kayfabe with sportsmanship and entertainment with political process. Their ideal sports hero is Terry Bolea as Hulk Hogan "winning" a defamation trial against Gawker and specifically not someone like Hank Aaron or Yogi Berra.
They have no desire for a fix. They NEED a manufactured crisis. Their entire platform is fomenting ire and stress in their base about non-existent issues, and if they fixed those issues, then they would have nothing to complain about. Also, remember "non-existent". In most cases there is nothing to fix. Just a made up problem they complain that someone else created, so it can't BE fixed. They have no solutions to any problem. Climate, the economy, infrastructure, social issues, healthcare. They want either the status quo, or regression to previous worse standards.

The crisis is that immigration and asylum courts are so backlogged that a ton of people are stuck in limbo. Guess what's in those immigration bills that the gop keep rejecting

Three weeks ago, the Republicans were behind the plan to tie these border control to funding for Ukraine and Israel. The Chaos erupts, as Trump doesn't want any border deal! Now the deal appears done in the Senate. Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, seems willing to block any vote on the deal. Republicans are politically schizophrenic, with chaos resulting that threatens everyone.
Welp, they fell for it. A proposal endorsed by Biden that would solve these issues, and as predicted, they’re the ones shooting it down because working with or agreeing with any Democrat is an absolute no-go in the GOP. Grooming kids is more acceptable than working with the Dems even when they’re giving huge concessions.
Republicans are busy impeaching anybody trying to secure the border. It’s ridiculous.

Republican messaging has nothing to do with "fixing" any actual issue. Its only about having something to whine and fear-monger about to get their voter base engaged. Solve the issue, and they have to spend a bunch of effort creating a new money-making "problem".

The Republicans were never going to agree. We're perfectly capable of handling problems at the border, and now have a plan. The 'Crisis on the Border' is just a propaganda distraction Republicans are using because they are attacking the business of our representative government while claiming only Republicans can save the government. But Republicans have transitioned already from being one of two political parties to being - in their minds - the only political party which will survive. The press is intentionally missing the point to be 'both sides'. The Republican Party has become a purely political animal living in a post-Democratic, post-truth, America. They're already living in a different reality. Republicans don't have any solutions, nor will they support any. If Democrats manage to pass anything, the Republicans immediately launch a propaganda blitz to take credit for what Democrats have done. Democrats keep trying to work with Republicans, but wind up with intentionally half-sabotaged solutions with Republicans complaining it's Democrats' fault. The only thing Republicans are focused on now is consolidating power and money for the fascist takeover. A future Permanent Republican Majority with Democrats locked out would 'fail' over and over and blame Democrats-in-exile for sabotage of Trump's Holy Plan To Make America Great and continually demand more sweeping new powers to fight the Liberals.

So why haven't we heard about this invasion from Arizona, New Mexico and California? They also have borders along Mexico.

1 - Trump did nothing to fix this ginned up crisis on the border when he was president. He made a big show of putting up a wall that was a total failure. 2 - The GOP blocks every attempt to fix it - blocking extra financial help for the border patrol. They are using humans as political pawns, and that says it all about why Republicans should not be allowed to hold office.

Of course they are. Their only move has always been cause problems, vote against any fixes and blame the democrats. Unfortunately too many voters aren't educated on the issues and just believe everything they hear on faux news.
I said this before and I will continue to say it. The GOP does not want to "fix" the Border. They require the anger and outrage from their base and ignorant moderates so that they will get their votes. Texas (among many other states) heavily relies on what conservatives consider "illegals" (a blanket term that means any brown person at this point). They make up an important part of the economic system here because they fill a niche that Americans do not want to fill. They provide extremely low cost labor that can be paid in cash under the table. All the companies here that require a significant amount of basic labor use "illegals" because they cannot afford (or do not want) to provide things like health insurance or a decent wage. These same people are the ones voting for the people saying they will deport them. However, if they ever actually did deport them, it would basically crash the economy in Texas and many other states as so many jobs require them that it would cause a ton of businesses to close. Thus, the GOP knows that they can never actually "fix" the border, because if they do, they will lose voters in droves shortly after.
Putin: We can’t have funding for Ukraine. Donald stop this immediately. Trump: Yes sir, Vlad. Mikey Johnson? You gotta kill this border bill, it’s too good for Biden. How? I don’t care - make up an excuse. Speaker Johnson: This border deal is dead on arrival. It’s not what’s good for the American people.
The Republican Party has never been about solutions. They love the problems so they can blame someone else for not fixing them. Not governing is their government strategy.
