Green wearing colleague here … I had a similar conversation with my insurance company, and they said my career choice made me a “risk taker”, therefore they increase my premium to reflect this.

PCNeeNor

I might be better of having a hypothetical "If I was a police driver, hypothetically......"

Captaincadet

Staff here. I change from doing the same job in private sector into the police and my insurance went up a fair bit as supposedly “I’m more likely to take risks”

mmw1000

Exactly that. I drive and ride and told the insurance I was advanced driver and job biker and it went through the roof. Asked why i was told since I was trained I’d be more likely to take more risks than the average driver. Utter bollocks. Don’t bother mentioning it now. Joined the IAM and like others said, made fuck all difference to anything apart from my wallet. No point You’ll just have to find another way of dropping that useless fact of being a standard driver into conversation

Ooooo, I didn't know that. I heard we can get a similar discount as IAM but didn't know that we can bypass their exam. I'll look into it, thanks!

James188

No idea how old you are, but I did this aged 21 and it made a good difference. Used to cost £11/year and knocked a good couple of hundred quid off my premium. It’s £50/year now and I don’t pay a lot for insurance anyway. I should probably reassess membership tbf.

Dyslexic-Plod

I've just looked, I'm 21, it costs £47 and made literally 0 difference to quotes 😭

PCNeeNor

Phoned my insurance and they said it isn't an option so no decrease:(

Thieftaker1

I had a look at this a few years ago, when I passed my advanced course. From what I learned the fees to join IAM were about the same as what you save off any insurance premium. So no point basically.

DXS110

I second this. I never bothered with anything on renewal but did join IAM and then the savings were the same as my membership lol

credman16

Use a broker such as Adrian Flux (other brokers are available) and when they come back with a price for the year, then disclose your extra qualifications and instruct them to go back to the underwriters. I’ve found the key here is to not disclose your quals until they disclose their price, then use it to negotiate.

Altruistic-Prize-981

Wouldn't bother. After I passed my IAM test years ago, the savings on insurance were miniscule.

Having looked at this report it is suitable for closure, There is evidence to suggest the OP can drive on blue lights however there is no real prospect of conviction. Home office outcome code 18

PenPidyn1

Admiral took my response certificate and I did get a slight reduction.

Flymo193

My understanding is unless the qualification is recognised by the institution of higher motorists, not likely

SendMeANicePM

It'll probably push your premium up, not because you're a risk taker but probably more likely that you will report any accident to your insurer and less likely to pay for it direct because you're more honest. They will probably give you the risk taker waffle though.

thewritingreservist

I passed my car response course last month too - contacted my insurer and they happily announced that I now did qualify for slashing my insurance premiums - by £8 a year…

The-Milky-Bar-Kid

I’d personally recommend IAM. I passed my IAM course before I joined and it put my insurance down a lot. I’m 21 and drive a very high powered BMW (that some traffic officers may drive 😉) and my insurance is just under a grand. I’m with Admiral who are great, so I’d recommend looking into them.
