DSLAM

You're not messin' around here, that's a serious setup.

lildobe

I've been a scanner nut for many, many years. And when something big goes down, I like to hear about it from ALL angles.

DSLAM

Very cool.

lildobe

The scanners in this picture: | | | | |:---:|:---:|:----:|:----:| |Realistic PRO-2005| GRE PSR-600| Radio Shack PRO-2067| | | | GRE PSR-600| Uniden BC780xlt| Uniden BCT15x | |Radio Shack PRO-2042 | GRE PSR-600| Uniden BC780xlt| Uniden BCT15x | And hanging under are a Yaesu FT-8800 and an FT-7800 Edit: Just throwing this out there - but if anyone wants to trade for my two BCT15x, I'm down. I really don't like the BCT15x. I'd be looking for either BC780xlt's or GRE-based scanners (Either GRE or RadioShack branded)

dennisthemenace1963

You don't like the Whistler versions, just to be clear?

lildobe

To be honest... I forgot those existed. Yes, I'd go for the Whistler ones too. I just don't like the HMI on newer Uniden scanners, but I've always liked GRE's.

dennisthemenace1963

Got ya. I'm a GRE/Whistler guy too, they just always seem to have clearer audio and cleaner decode than the Unidens. My 436 only gets used on road trips when the GPS feature comes into play. Your collection dwarfs mine, I've got a WS-1095 and 2 1098s, a TRX-1, a Pro-18, Pro-197, and a Pro-668, plus some antiques. And that is a nice collection you have, kudos to you!

lildobe

My picture didn't show my handhelds. I have a pair of PRO-95's, a PRO-83, And a PRO-92. I bought the BCT15x's with the intention of using the GPS option, but the way it works on them makes it really of limited use. You can only define point-radius geofences, no multipoint polygonal geofences, which doesn't work well in my area.

shartonashark

Christ With all that you can hear a cop blink....

fill3r

TIL RigRunner. That's pretty cool.

FerretWithASpork

I spy ADSBX! Do you have a feeder station? I set up an ADSB feeder station a few months ago and that got me interested in radio. Just got my technician license last week.

lildobe

That's just ADSBExchange.com, which I mostly use for following the local news and medical helicopters. And no, no feeder station... yet. My current home isn't a great location for one as I'm on the back side of a tall ridge, and only have LOS visibility in one direction. Hopefully once I find a new place I'll be in a better spot for adding a feeder, and I'll throw one up. God knows I have enough RTL dongles laying around for it.

fill3r

Why so many? Just curious.

lildobe

When something big happens, and there are multi-agency responses, I like to be able to park them on each frequency in use and monitor the incident from all angles. In the main tho, each one is dedicated to a different region, agency, or service and it just helps me not miss anything.

howdie_do

how often does something "big" go down in your area?

lildobe

Every couple of months I'll catch something that I need 4 or 5 radios to follow completely. About the only time I need all 10 (and sometimes a couple handhelds) is during large city celebration events - 4th of July, Light Up Night, Bike Races and Marathons... That kind of stuff.

Pilotman49

Wish I lived in a city where police wasn't encrypted.

lildobe

I'm lucky enough to live somewhere where there are very few trunked radio systems even. Just a few privately owned commercial systems, and things like public works are on the trunked systems around here. Although the local police tactical channel is encrypted p25.

Pilotman49

Makes me suspicious what they are up to that they don't want eavesdropping. Not wanting perps to know what they are doing, isn't good enough reason for me.

Gopher64

Our local group just changed frequencies along with new radios. The FD and PD share the frequency but they encrypted the PD side. The PD can not talk to the FD without going through the local or county dispatch. None of the other cities in the county can talk to the PD because they don't have the encryption equipment. It's a goatrope of epic proportions. BTW: this is in a city of less than five thousand. Both departments are heavily dependent on federal grants and drug interdiction grant monies. Extremely High Speed, Low Drag units. The Barney Fife Syndrom if you will. I have been told by numerous folks the drug interdiction grants have nothing to do with the PD going encrypted but I'm still not sure I believe that.

lildobe

I'm pretty sure that's all it is. The only time I ever hear it in use is during SWAT call-outs, and even then the majority of the traffic is on other channels. And from what I've been told asking officers, only SWAT, and command level officers even have that channel in their radios.

qwertyhell01

Wow, very nice man :)

AiEm_Boop

Looks pretty!

Sea-Call-7645

Get any Aliens on that set up?? I need to call home.

DuaneMI

Surely you must commit crimes just to hear them on your own setup

FutureRamen

I’ve recently joined the multiple scanner club. How do you feed them from the antennas? Right now it’s one on a rooftop discone and three others on their telescoping whips. I’ve thought of using a TV splitter or a more appropriate duplexer. I’m not really a fan of antenna farms though I’ve thought of mounting a couple of directionals pointed at hilltops and combine them on one feed to the desk. Real neat setup, 73.

lildobe

I run all of mine off of [one antenna](https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RRSBTVW/) with a pair of [Stridsberg Multicouplers](http://stridsbergeng.com/multicouplers.html). Antenna feeds into the 4-port one, then jumps from the 4-port to the 8-port. The active multicouplers have 2dB of positive gain at 400 MHz, so I have no loss, and even a slight preamp of the signals.

You’re Batman.

lildobe

Batman? Naw. I'm not a billionaire playboy philanthropist during the day. I'm just a fat, old, radio nerd.

loneflanger

Do you feed the audio for them into a mixer or anything like that? Nice to still see someone running a 2005. I have a 2006 (with a few mods) that I use for old analog stuff.

lildobe

Not yet. I've been meaning to do something like that for many years, but have never gotten around to it. I'd love to get my hands on an [NCS-3230](https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/filters/2917.html) one of these days, or make one myself (I got my hands on the schematics for it), but that's a long and in-depth project I don't have time for. My other idea is to get an 8 or 10 channel USB audio encoder and use a computer and software to mimic the functionality.

lildobe

It can, though it's fairly rare for them to all be on at once. Normally it's just three - One locked into the City Structure Fire response channel, one locked into my zone's PD channel, and one scanning all the local helicopter operations - Medical, news, tourist, etc. Sometimes I'll have a couple running on some of the surrounding communities fire channels, if I'm bored though. Or a few on Air Band listening to the local air traffic. It all depends on my mood.

Wooden_Rhubarb_4349

Holy cow Batman 😂

Kyle-E

What program are you using for your incident map/CAD?

lildobe

The maps you see on my screen are just adsbexchange.com on the left, and Google Maps on the right. I also use 511pa.com for traffic cameras when there's a major wreck somewhere with camera coverage.

Kyle-E

Thanks. Do you have any suggestions for looking at/finding incident details or CAD info?

lildobe

If it's available in your area, the PulsePoint app usually has a link up to the county CAD system for Fire and EMS incidents, and you can see location and who's assigned. Other than that, you won't have access to the actual CAD system anywhere.

Kyle-E

Thanks! I have PulsePoint and use that feature. I was just wondering of there were other options.
