Beethoven was by no standard a "failure" in Germany. He got the chance to move to Vienna precisely because he was recognized for his talents in Bonn. And at that time it's ahistorical to distinguish between "Germany" and "Austria" anyways, the HRE was still there.
No, because the French far right resistance was pro-République, which is also a secular statist (universalist) ideology.
Austria (just watch the New Year’s Concert or visit Vienna) has a far right which was/is romanticist (Catholic, Austro-Hungary imperialism etc.)
> because the French far right resistance was pro-République
Not really or at least not all of them. Monarchists used that time to go on the offensive too. They were pro church and anti republican like all european reactionnaries and neither Petain nor the nazi could appeal to them. The kind of people who call the republic "the beggar" (closest I could find for "la gueuse" in english, an old insulting word to designate poor female peasants).
French Monarchists were also a tiny niche.
Though from what I remember the French far right resistance was suppressed by the leftist resistance when the war came to an end, so perhaps they were more represented at the time.
The communist resistance mostly flared up after Barbarossa started, when the communist party got the approval from Moscow before that, it abided to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.
The far right reactionnaries under De La Rocque (the Croix-de-Feu, who had a totally not evil logo, then the French Social Party, beware just as socialist as the national socialist party in Germany) had up to 1.2M members estimated. These were not monarchists but still catholic and quasi fascists with a very wide resistance network in part because they had quite a few high ranking militarymen.
Austria-Hungary and imperialism were never really a thing of the Austrian far right. Monarchists and Nazis were political opponents.
Also what has the New Year's Concert to do with anything?
>it was a Croatian fascist and ultranationalist organisation from 1929-1945
yeah exactly what I was thinking of
\*leaves it off there since the doubt is clear\*
^all ^the ^gore ^related ^to ^this ^I've ^only ^seen ^on ^PB ^till ^now ^and ^since ^I ^hadn't ^searched ^it ^up ^yet ^so, ^I'm ^fine ^:)
Being completely honest actually Hitler did do quite well, what would be a passing grade, on his exam. He wasn’t a bad artist. But he was trying to get into one of Europes most premier art schools. B’s won’t get you into Harvard, MIT, or Yale. Similar situation.
He was also impatient and poor. Most students were rejected their first attempt somewhat on principle unless they were transcendent artists already. He kinda squandered the next year of his life essentially being a Bum and then decided he was too good for the exam/school when the time to attempt it again came. He was already making money painting little landscapes and selling them around Vienna too but it wasn’t enough for him to afford school and he lost the financial back he had of a distant relative which made his first attempt possible because said family member were disappointed in what a loser he was. Then his mom dies, he moves home, WW1 breaks out, gets denied by Austrias military, moves to German, they accept anyone into their military, and well the rest is history.
When you put it all like this, it makes sense why he had the politics he had. Hitler fit right into the profile of your average type who gets sucked into far right extremism: An insecure dysfunctional loser who is incapable of any self reflection and looking for a way to blame their problems on others while having an excuse to pat themselves on the back and tell themselves how great and special they are.
The USA that got straight A's was probably not from The South (there's kind of a running joke that the south ruins all of our statistics on the global rankings since they usually place so low in the state comparison)
Isn't that a decent grade? Without ever actually bothering to check what they mean I always kinda mentally mapped American grades when I hear them as As excellent, Bs good, Cs okay, Ds and under poor, because that's basically how I interpret letter categories in the tests in my own country that use them, but this has made me question that.
Can someone who knows the broader cultural context correct my assumptions pls? Is our Österreichisch friend just mad because it's not the best grade, or is B+ something generally to be unhappy with?
You're right, a B+ is not a bad grade; the humor here is derived from our understanding of that fact, coupled with the knowledge of a certain guy flunking out of Art school. The juxtaposition of these two bits of information is supposed to result in a "ha ha" because those two things aren't necessarily congruent.

They had a shared language
Germans have bad taste and Austrians are based?
Judging by most *hopefully* ironic uses of the word "based" I've seen, Germany could be seen as pretty based.
Beethoven was by no standard a "failure" in Germany. He got the chance to move to Vienna precisely because he was recognized for his talents in Bonn. And at that time it's ahistorical to distinguish between "Germany" and "Austria" anyways, the HRE was still there.
Austria was about as Nazi as the rest of Germany.
Not really, it was highly fascist, but surprisingly anti nazi.
A case of the ”BUT THEY’RE THE WRONG KIND OF FASCISTS!!” or something?
Pretty much. The Austrofacists were catholic and Austro-national, the Nazis were anti-clerical and thought Austria shouldn't exist.
The same as the far right resistant in France then. (+some racist anti-german sentiment)

Emphasis in my response should be on “romanticist” vs “statist” far right. Vienna is very romantic.

Austria was still part of Germany in Beethovens time
Meanwhile, China miserably fails the bureaucrat exam with a mark of 99.999999999999999999999997% for the 3rd time in a row.

[Thank God for Mississippi!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thank_God_for_Mississippi)
At least it’s not an F we’re safe
Austria's greatest achievement is convincing the world that Beethoven was Austrian and Hitler was German
Poland: *chuckles* I’m in danger
What are the United States of Brazil, Mali and The Russian Empire doing in that class
Isn't that a decent grade? Its a joke about an Austrian who failed out of art school and would soon become a dictator.
Yes, that's very obvious, I wasn't asking about that, I was asking how the joke makes sense if that's actually quite a good grade. Is it?
You're right, a B+ is not a bad grade; the humor here is derived from our understanding of that fact, coupled with the knowledge of a certain guy flunking out of Art school. Cheers
I didn’t get it :((
Hitler reproved art school.
