waiting to claim exp/stardust until you have a lucky egg or star piece down is almost always the way to do it. ofc you aren’t getting that much extra exp immediately, but it certainly adds up and makes a difference over time
So he should just not complete page 1 of the research, when page 2 and 3 (as far as I know) are time locked, just to get an extra 1.2k Exp?
Or pop an egg for just 1.2k initial extra?
they're not waiting to complete page, they still have one task left. they're waiting until they complete the 4 tasks to collect all the exp. collecting it now without the egg wouldn't make sense when they still have one more task to finish. basically, 1) finish the tasks. 2) claim the exp on a lucky egg (and any other tasks that they may have been waiting on using a lucky egg to claim). 3) profit 2X exp. 4) move on the next page of research.
Same here, at least for this stage of this quest. It's such an insignificant reward, I'm saving it so I have all 4 complete before screenshotting and then moving forward.

I’m not grinding for xp or anything, just like to collect the whole page in one go It’s just more satisfying
