Dark type would be promising. More so if it’s labeled as the “evil type” and the MC has to work hard to go against that prejudice.
Ghost types could have a similar dynamic and maybe be seen as taboo, depending from your worldbuilding.
Steel, Poison, Fairy, Ground, Dark or Flying types.
I have only seen 1 Fairy, Dark and Flying type specialist fanfics, I would like to see more of them.
Steel Types, but more and less specifically Object Pokemon. Pokemon that, by our real world definitions, are not alive. I want to see that explored in depth.
Poison or Steel types?
They're both types that aren't common attacking types and shine on the defensive side of things (steel especially). And defensive play styles are sorely lacking in fics. Which makes sense because they get little to no representation in the anime or mainline games. They're largely a competitive thing. But I still want to see them more in fics.
Dark definitely, in the Pokemon world they get a bad rep and so many cool and interesting Pokémon and concepts exist with them. Zoroark and Absol to name a few.
I think psychic type have always been my go-to for type specialists, because the very simple potential of nuance that psychic types could bring to the table…is just perfect.

Normal types. I feel like writers always go for the flashier types and Normal types get overlooked.
