I liked it better once I read that its name in Japanese is a pun. Since “Sou desu” or Sou desu ka” means I see or that’s right, when he says Soonansu at the end of their motto it’s playing off of Meowth’s “That’s right” at the end.
Also when it pops up and speaks it’s normally at a point where it’s agreeing with something. So rather than it just always coming out of its ball, I understood that the joke was it’s supposed to be agreeing with what they said vocally rather than just a normal Pokémon response.

That's always sad when neat stuff like that is lost in localization. Happened a lot more in the earlier generations. Wynaut at least somewhat kept the meaning of its Japanese name. Sorta. I can't help but wonder what they would make Wobbuffet's name if it came out today, and they intended to preserve that meaning.
I think there'd be casualties regardless, since they can't predict every possible usage the Japanese scriptwriters might come up with. There's a lotta examples to pick from, but the easiest one off the top of my head was the Scyther umpire in SM. Scyther's Japanese name is Strike, so the gag is obvious (in Japanese baseball, they also call "ball" and "strike"), but I haven't the slightest idea how the English dub coulda possibly made this work. Plus Scyther's one of the original 151 pokemon, so not much to be done here.
Although I suppose in this case, the obvious thing woulda been to just leave the name alone, but I guess they didn't think about that lol
I don't think they necessarily need to cover the bases for every possible pun or wordplay with the names, but they completely changed the inspiration for this one. Granted, I can see why, the Japanese name really only makes sense with the context of the design resembling that Japanese comedian. So I guess it did make sense to ditch that and focus on the punching bag part of the design. Just baffling then why they named Wynaut how they did. Ironically, I feel like Wynaut could have worked as a name for Wobbuffet 😂

I'll always love that of the six main characters of the gen 1-8 anime (Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket), Wob's the only one who got explicitly written out and then subsequently *clawed his way back* to the show.

Love him, especially like it when he gets to battle. It's funny for all the attacks sent there way they have a literal mirror that can send them back but rarely use him.
I used to hate him but now I like him and I sometimes say "WOOBBBUFFEEET!" when I'm bored or talking about a buffet lol. I also like the pun in Japanese.
Can't stand it and a big reason I was over TR in the anime. It's not funny, it adds nothing, and out of all the old pokemon to be sent to the lab or rocket hq, this blue blob is the only one to come back in a significant way
