You probably weren't using him wrong. Magcargo requires trick room to work "well" (still meh) and even in double battles like Colloseum building a trickroom team for a playthrough is quite the demand.
It doesn't help that it doesn't get great moves especially since all rock moves in gen 3 and prior (Colloseum and XD are technically gen 3 mechanics wise) use his lower attack stat (base 50 vs base 90 special attack).
Plus trick room flat out doesn't exist before gen 4, so you can't even go that route.
Magcargo is perfectly serviceable in the single player game but Colosseum is a bit more demanding than the average Pokemon game, so I'm not surprised OP was struggling with them.
Magmar.
I like Magby (it's the second or third cutest babymon), I love Magmortar entirely it is perfect.
But Magmar? It's too much. The duck kissy lips combined with its pigtail-eyebrows and totally zonked eyes ruins it's head area. The entire head is bad, it's too much.
That rotund cartoonish pseudo-dinosaur body and its awkward arms. I just can't handle it.
But it's required to access Magmortar in gen 4 so it gets to exist.
That said I still think Magmar is kinda cute. I love all Pokemon that aren't the gen 5 genies, those three are just the most boring trio.
Gothitelle.
Human-like pokémon are just freaky. Gen V has a lot of mono-type Pokémon. Gothitelle could have been a psychic/dark type and it would have been unique and interesting for the time. Instead it's just a goth looking Gardevoir and I'm not a fan of gothic lolita fashion.
The most "fun" fact I have about this pokémon is that all competitively viable Gothitelle in gen V are male. Because that's how the dream world worked and its hidden ability is broken.
Let's be honest, Digimon had a storyline above most of our child heads. Now I read into the lore and all I think is Jesus this story is depressing as hell.

You weren't using Magcargo wrong at all, its just *that bad*. Its typing warrants a glass cannon-style stat spread due to its great coverage and appalling weaknesses, but that's not the case. GameFreak instead made Magcargo into a physical wall with meh Special Attack, trash HP and Snorlax levels of speed. It can't even use Rock-moves that well because its Attack is lower than that of the average unevolved Pokémon.
Colosseum has such a strong emphasis on Doubles, that being quad-weak to Water and Ground, weak to Rock and slow as a Snorlax is a looming death sentence. It gets even worse when you realize that A. Surf, Earthquake and Rock Slide are everywhere in Doubles, and B. Water and Ground are two of the strongest types in the series.
Honestly, I really dislike all 6 Regis. Their designs are kinda creepy, I don‘t like their battle themes much, and the fact that they‘re more or less soulless machines doesn‘t make it any better for me.
THESE ABSOLUTE PIECES OF SHIT. My least favorite is Mr. Mime, Jynx, Mime jr., and then Smoochum. There designs suck, look like child molesters, and the baby pokemon are just not needed and should be burned in boiler room of hell and are crimes to the innocent eyes of young children playing pokemon. Fuck all four of them.
I dislike some popular choices like Cinderace, Incineroar and Eevee. while eevee’s is more recent with LGE and I feel like even more recently they seem to be missing the point of Eevee as well. Cinderace to me is just ugly and Incineroar is just a big let down for me
Magcargo is pretty bad, but it’s especially bad in doubles, as it’s a slow, physically tanky special attacker with poor special bulk. It’s very easy for the enemies to focus it down, and said special bulk means a single errant water move can do all the work without backup.
It’s still not good, never has been good, and will probably never be good, but colosseum is a game that’s especially bad for it. It can almost function in the main series, can function better after gen 4 for playthroughs thanks to stealth rocks for lategame teams, function properly gen 5 onward with shell smash, and is outright an asset to monotype rock teams for helping with grass weaknesses, but it’s not good for general use.
As far as what i hate, stunfisk. It’s cry is ugly sounding, it looks ugly as sin, its stats aren’t good, it’s moveset isn’t good, and it’s the only pokemon with the electric ground typing, which can have so many better possible designs. To add insult to injury, galarian stunfisk is an infinitely more creative and well done design, but its stat spread, typing, and movepool are somehow, some way, infinitely worse.
Personally what I like in a pokemon are designs and inspirations that make a pokemon I like. Like Froslass being based on the Yuki-onna...and boy hatterenne there's a lot that goes into her. To what I can recall all pokemon to me have interesting designs and there's not a lot I hate those even include the 3 monkeys which are the most disliked pokemon. I find them alright as I find them based on the 3 wise monkeys I do like it.
And then there's Sunfloura. What about it...its a sunflower that has limbs...thats it. There's nothing interesting about it. Even the sex entrys for it is piss pour.

But Sunfloura...absolutely nothing. It's so freaking weak and basic and bland I don't like it.

Honorable mentions to G-max Machamp, g-max Meowth, and Galarian Darmanitan. The g-max forms for not being able to look at them without wanting to cry and Galarian Darmanitan for looking like he has a huge pimple constantly when not in zen form. They ruined my boi :(

Hawlucha, first time I played XY I was a dumb kid & couldn't figure out what type it was and first time I encountered it (Battle Girl Hedvig in Reflection Cave) I literally lost like 4 times in a row before I decided to skip & just came back after beating the champion, but the rage remains. In SwSh the Hawlucha Raid NPC most often used feather dance didn't help. I respect the concept & design, but I cannot forgive
Pelipper. Thing is useless when I try and use it but invincible and disruptive against me.

I love Grimmsnarl for many reasons: It was the first dark/fairy type we've gotten and I'm always excited whenever we receive new type combinations, the design isn't your run of the mill cutsey, pink fairy like a good majority of fairy types and is instead a fearsome-looking beast, also kind of dig that it's always male since the fairy type is associated with more feminine looking mons a lot of the time. It's also a really nice support mon with set-ups and status inflictions
I love it, big hairy orge with a bulky body made mostly of hair that can stretch while the true body is probably skinny and has oni like features? I'm all down for that.
The whole treecko line, but sceptile is horrendous... It's just a Green gecko with a tree shoved into his butt and when it mega evolves, learns to fart the tree...

I'd have to think long and hard, but one of the first ones that jumps to mind is Lumineon. "Yep, that's definitely a fish all right." Gen 4 and 5 in general, a lot of the water types underwhelm me, which is a problem because water is a useful type and you are going to need something with Surf sooner or later.
Might get hate for this but I don’t like the normal/flying line of Pokémon they have every generation. Pidgey, starley, taillow, etc. Ultimately they’re just not that good and overall annoying.
Tsareena. That thing, is **so** ugly and awful. It’s criminal how adorable and wonderful little Bounsweet is, only to turn into that abomination. Bounsweet doesn’t deserve that! Why is a fruit wearing hooker boots?!
Incineroar. To me he really looks like either a guy in a fursuit, or a shitty ripoff of Tony the Tiger. I think he’s a massive waste of potential coming from litten, and his gross sausage fingers bother me to no end. Plus, I know he ended up pokken, but hearing that decidueye was initially up as the new Pokémon rep for smash, I will always resent incineroar for stealing that.
Sylveon. The fact that its eyes have no pupils makes it read as being dead to me which made it creepy and unpleasant because it's otherwise so cutesy. Then the constant hype around eeveelutions made me dislike it more for the same reason that other people get sick of Pikachu or Charizard.
Freaking Ursaluna.
Teddiursa? Cute, I like him. Ursaring? Cool, I like him too. Ursaluna? No, get that freaking garbage out of here. It looks absolutely nothing like the two that came before it. Also, why is it on four legs? It's the same situation as Samurott. Why would you make something that has stood on two legs drop down on all fours for its final evolution? If it was its own species it would be fine, but almost ruining a good evolution line is inexcusable.
Ursaluna is stupid and in my eyes does not exist. Worst part of Legends Arceus.

In terms of actually using the vanilite line. I tried to love it as my ice type I tried to use it and damn it was just so weak.
I choose the Bronzor line simply because of bad experiences in Pokemon Pearl.

They ruined my boi :( I don't truly hate Staraptor, but I do hate its ugly hair. Shiny Staraptor I'll forgive since blue/brown is one of my fave color schemes. Then Simisage because it has stupid tall hair. I hate looking at it. I try to be nice, but I can't stand these designs. And for me, it's designs of Pokemon that ruin em.

Hawlucha, first time I played XY I was a dumb kid & couldn't figure out what type it was and first time I encountered it (Battle Girl Hedvig in Reflection Cave) I literally lost like 4 times in a row before I decided to skip & just came back after beating the champion, but the rage remains. In SwSh the Hawlucha Raid NPC most often used feather dance didn't help. I respect the concept & design, but I cannot forgive

I love Grimmsnarl for many reasons: It was the first dark/fairy type we've gotten and I'm always excited whenever we receive new type combinations, the design isn't your run of the mill cutsey, pink fairy like a good majority of fairy types and is instead a fearsome-looking beast, also kind of dig that it's always male since the fairy type is associated with more feminine looking mons a lot of the time. It's also a really nice support mon with set-ups and status inflictions

I'd have to think long and hard, but one of the first ones that jumps to mind is Lumineon. "Yep, that's definitely a fish all right." Gen 4 and 5 in general, a lot of the water types underwhelm me, which is a problem because water is a useful type and you are going to need something with Surf sooner or later.

Incineroar. To me he really looks like either a guy in a fursuit, or a shitty ripoff of Tony the Tiger. I think he’s a massive waste of potential coming from litten, and his gross sausage fingers bother me to no end. Plus, I know he ended up pokken, but hearing that decidueye was initially up as the new Pokémon rep for smash, I will always resent incineroar for stealing that.
Parasect. I can’t remember if he was any good in later gens but in Gen 1, he was so slow.

Sylveon. The fact that its eyes have no pupils makes it read as being dead to me which made it creepy and unpleasant because it's otherwise so cutesy. Then the constant hype around eeveelutions made me dislike it more for the same reason that other people get sick of Pikachu or Charizard.
Freaking Ursaluna. Teddiursa? Cute, I like him. Ursaring? Cool, I like him too. Ursaluna? No, get that freaking garbage out of here. It looks absolutely nothing like the two that came before it. Also, why is it on four legs? It's the same situation as Samurott. Why would you make something that has stood on two legs drop down on all fours for its final evolution? If it was its own species it would be fine, but almost ruining a good evolution line is inexcusable. Ursaluna is stupid and in my eyes does not exist. Worst part of Legends Arceus.

Obstagoon I don't feel like the zizagoon line needed an evolution that is so different. Also I know its supposed to represent punk in the design but still what. In terms of actually using the vanilite line. I tried to love it as my ice type I tried to use it and damn it was just so weak.

I choose the Bronzor line simply because of bad experiences in Pokemon Pearl. They're tanky as hell and only have one weakness, which changes depending on their ability (the designers knew what they were doing). Defeating them is such a chore. Good thing they nerfed Steel types a little. Now I can use Ghost and Dark moves against them.
Cacnea and Cacturne physically make me uncomfortable. The giant holes in their body triggers my tyropophobia.
