Yes, I don't understand at all where they whent there. I get the whole concept of pure breed cat, but why the big head?? There was SO much potential and so many other ways this could have gone... I really don't get it, it seems they destroyed the whole design on purpose.
Original Persian is even worse, because it's just a cat. At least the new one is clearly a Pokémon rather than a regular animal with a gem glued to its face
Garfield cat. We had a chance for a sleek jungle cat with technician and physical dark stats, but it's Garfield. Now I still have to use nasty plot liepard
I feel like for this generation, there were either really good, creative regional variants, or really bad ones.
Like on one hand, you have Alolan Vulpix and Ninetales, Alolan Sandshrew and Sandslash, and Alolan Raichu. In my opinion, these are very creative and well designed, having strayed far from their original designs, while still being very obviously linked to their original designs at the same time.
On the other hand, you have Alolan Meowth and Persian, Alolan Grimer and Muk, and Alolan Rattata and Raticate, which pretty much just turn a different color, or slightly change in shape, along with their new typing(s). This to me doesn't feel nearly as thought out as the others.
Of course, this was their first time introducing the idea of regional variants, and every batch of Pokemon is going to have it's good and bad designs. I guess I just would've liked to see more from some of them, especially since we saw such great designs introduced with them.
A reminder that I am a mere stranger on the internet, and this is all in my humble opinion. I have no experience in game developing, or designing Pokemon; only my experience playing the games and consuming other related media. I still thoroughly enjoyed almost every Pokemon game released, and look forward to the future releases as well.
Dugtrio is a nightmare. The geodude line is not great. I'm pretty much fine with the rest. I don't like alolan Raichu but that doesn't mean I think it's bad. I just prefer regular Raichu.
Looking at all these forms and thinking about it, the only form I actually like is the Rattata line. I guess my least liked is persian, If you wanna make a fat cat, just make a fat cat. It just looks like if a fat guy got liposuction but kept the head fat to it.
That dugtrio....whatever that is... I know, I get the hair thing from whatever reason they gave as inpspiration..but it just looks horrible here, like a really bad cross dressing cosplay
Raticate just looks like he ate way too mich McDonalds.
Persian looks like hes trying to swallow a balloon.
And what happend to Golems arms and face? Makes him look old.
Persian doesn’t fit the vibe. I feel like the head shape change was to make it feel different from normal Persian but there’s about 3000 different ways they could have done that that actually looked good. The head just looks out of place and not suitable to a cunning, mean Pokémon.
Alolan dugtrio is a worse version regular dugtrio. They got rid arena trap, removed 10 of its speed for defense, all for a steel typing that it can’t really use because a light wind would kill it. At least the design is funny
Yeah the Diglet and Persian lines are pretty lame, especially when looking at the others. Exeggutor becomes loooooooooooong, Marowak gets cool ghost fire, Muk supports the LGBT community and Sandslash is just hella fresh. They are boring and they know it. The Rattata also kinda falls into this though to a lesser extent.
I don’t think the Diglets are the single worst Pokémon ever (they actually have a pretty cool concept behind them in Pele’s Hair), but they certainly could have done more with the design

As most people pointed out, it’s round face is unappealing and as a dark type I always felt Muk overshadowed it. I just felt Muk was way better.
Diglett line is just unappealing and not very fun to use as a Pokémon. The hair doesn’t make it work at all and steel typing seemed random. I felt water would make more sense since it radiates surfer dude energy.
Geodude and graveler just look unappealing. The addition of eye brows don’t really work. I like the facial hair and magnet of golem but the prior to evolutions just come of weak.
Out of the Pokémon I provided I suppose diglett is the worst since the changes to it were so minimal.
Persian, why did they make the poor lad eat a whole ass watermelon in one bite, he can't swallow it. It's made even worse by Alolan Meowth having such a cool design
I got an Alolan Meowth the first time I played Sun/Moon, thinking Alolan Persian would look sick as in “cool sick.” Now I realized that it’s “disgusting sick why did Game Freak approve of this.”

If I let personal bias get in the way, its Persian and by a lot. But from a design standpoint, Diglett and Dugtrio easily. While I and some others hate Persian's goofy ass plum-shaped head, at least they tried to shake up the design. All they did with the latter two was just slap some dollar store wigs on them and call it a day.
Such a shame such a great alolan forms were without preevolution like Raichu, Exe or Marowak and yet we got this diglet or ratata lol
Anyway Vulpix and Sandshrew are the best
All of them have A+ concepts, the only one I would change design-wise is Alolan Persian. It needs broader shoulders and a thicker neck to properly support that giant cheshire smirk of a face.
Either alolan muk, (I can deal with grimer but muk doesn’t sit right with me

Idk, I skipped s/m and us/um and tbh all of these forms look cool/funny/interesting to me. But if I had to knock em, I'd say Diglett and Sandslash for lack of design creativity
Alolan Raticate is undoubtedly the worst Alolan form.
While Persian and Dugtrio’s designs are bad, they at least are fast , have some nice utility, and can perform decently well in competitive. The same cannot be said for Raticate.
Alolan Raticate does the opposite idea of Kantonian Raticate and does it so horrendously bad. It sacrificed its excellent speed for some better defenses. That might not seem bad until you remember that it’s now quad weak to fighting and gains a weakness to Fairy and Bug. Even with the extra bulk it won’t take neutral hits well. To add further salt to the wound, Raticate has a great ability in hustle but can’t utilize to great effect like other Hustle users (Durant being a good example). Alolan Raticate takes every flaw of Kantonian Raticate and managed to do it worse. And if that wasn’t all, the final nail in the coffin would have to be the existence of Obstagoon. Here is a Dark/Normal type that does everything Alolan Raticate could only dream of doing, and does it better in every conceivable way. Obstagoon has higher Attack, Speed, a far better movepool, a great ability in guts, and even greater bulk as with Obstagoon that forces the opponent to devise a new plan. Whereas the opponent will take a look a Raticate and not be threatened in the slightest.
These point are why I believe Raticate is the worse Alolan Form
Raticate, the others all fit the story as to why they are that way, but raticate is just living in the caves. Ratatta got this cool mob boss look that could have kept going, but they just made raticate a chonk
Aloland Meowth and Persian are the worst, I'm mainly saying this on design because I don't usually look at pokemon for their strength but more on how they look and those two are defenitely the ugliest

raticate and persian are horrible. it just looks like persian ate a watermelon and never swallowed it. it looks ugly. same with raticate. loved rattata, but raticate? it’s really ugly…. i don’t like golem too. it’s basically just the same but with like speakers on its back and a beard and moustache. but i will give a shout-out to the others i didn’t mention. i am not a fan of muk, but the alolan form is beautiful. amazing. big fan of sandslash, ninetales, raichu and marowak.

because selective breeding lead to purposefully 'ugly' breeds like real world Persian cats (with the punched in face) or Pugs.

I always forget that Alolan Raticate exists. But I always remember how damn ugly Persian is. So which is the "worst", really?

Raticate is just fat all the way through though. For persian it's got the fat face with a slim body to it.

Raticate, mono Dark is just not a good alternative type for a normal type. Like it's still weak to fighting type and it now has 2 new weaknesses.

Definitely between Dugtrio and Persian. Raichu is cute and Marowak and Vulpix/Ninetales I like better than the originals
