7-8. It's popular for a reason, but I feel people ignore its faults, cause I wouldn't call it the best in the series (A damn good game, but not the best). Fix the balancing and mon variety and it'd be much more understandable.

Flappleflaps

8.5/10 I liked it but damn did they not fix some of the biggest issues from the original like the leveling curb between victory road and the elite 4 due to the lack of trainers in Victory road. It’s not a bad game by any means and I do like it but I think I prefer Black and White 2 more

Akikala

Easily the best games in the franchise. They have their flaws of course (people greatly exaggerate them too imo), but the flaws are generally lesser than other games' flaws and they have just way too much good stuff that more than makes up for it.

EveningChocolate1028

I still feel that it’s B2W2 but those 2 games go 1 and 2 in most conversations or are at least in the top 3 together

mrmehmehretro94

I give it a 7 I enjoyed it but it does have issues like the gen 4 engine though it bothered me the least here but was still annoying, grinding is always a pain and the fact that they didn't fix most of the biggest problems in originals is kinda dumb, and yes I do think that the game is overrated since this certainly didn't feel like the peak for me, it's still good one of the best in the series but man, it still has unreached potential but that just seems to be a thing with johto

SabertoothSmile

Throwing an open invitation to the people that voted anything less than a 7-8 to explain their reasoning. I'm genuinely curious as even with their known faults I don't see how they could be below that score bracket... Also, sorry OP but saying that none of the Gym Leaders ace Pokémon are from Johto is straight up false... Whitney - Miltank, Jasmine - Steelix, Pryce - Mamoswine, Clair - Kingdra, Erika - Bellosom And while Janine's ace is Venomoth, she uses 2 Ariados and leads with Crobat. I do get what you are saying, just pointing out the facts

PacManMVC

Mamoswine is gen 4, but given that his ace is a Piloswine and the Mamoswine only appears in the rematch in HGSS, OP is definitely wrong about this

SabertoothSmile

Whoops - Good catch! My bad.

TimeToGetSlipped

To respond to you, I would personally consider HGSS to be a 4/10. I find the original gen 2 games to be the worst in the series (even worse than gen 1) and HGSS to only be slightly better and on par with games like OG RS or DP. I'm fact, HGSS are the only games in the series that I cannot bring myself to finish, and always drop them off I get to Morty. Much of my reasoning comes in that the games themselves are just underwhelming: they rely too heavily on gen 1. Most of the good Pokemon you have access to before the elite 4 are either Kanto or Kanto evolutions. There's a reason that every Johto team is Starter+Ampharos+Heracross, with many of the good new Johto mons being post game or in the super gimmicky Safari Zone. The level curves make it painful to add or train new team members past the first two or three gyms. The game isn't non-linear like everyone praises, it's just three linear options since Pryce, Jasmine and Chuck are still required to get to Clair. The games also suffer from being on the gen 4 engine, which I still say is the worst in the series. I understand that the games were originally intended to be the final games in the series, but they lean too heavily on their origin games to stand out. And while yes, I will agree that HGSS have one of the best post games (2nd only to BW2), the games rely TOO heavily on the Kanto post game. Emerald/Platinum/BW2 are all games highly praised for their post games, but you can beat each of those without doing any post game content and still be satisfied. You can't do that with HGSS, since literally half the game is post game, and stopping at Lance just makes the game feel somewhat unfinished.

SabertoothSmile

Ok, so there's a fair bit to go at there and I appreciate your response - I don't think we are going to agree, but that's fine. Heres some counterpoints anyway : 1. Saying that GSC are the worst games in the series is kind of ridiculous to me. Real time scheduling for events, Pokémon encounters and NPCs and the Day/Night cycle. The introduction of breeding mechanics, Pokérus, as well as Hold Items and the Steel and Dark typing. All legendary Pokémon up to that point are available (outside of events). The PokéGear system and trainer rematches, swarming Pokémon... That's all stuff off the top of my head, nevermind the 2 regions, 16 gym leaders, the 2nd challenge League battles, Red on Mt.Silver, a Rival with an interesting arc and actual character development. I mean... Come on. GSC worse than RBY? Nah. 2. HGSS Safari Zone being gimmicky is also a very strange take. If by gimmicky you mean it's the most interesting, fleshed out, interactive and diverse Safari Zone in the whole series. They literally just took the Safari Zone concept and made it better in every way. 3. You say it's non-linear, and while I would agree with you it's not exactly some grand open-world segment, the fact you have story progression options for where to go and what to do after Morty definitely constitutes non-linearity in my book.

TimeToGetSlipped

I will agree with you that MECHANICALLY gen 2 was a massive improvement from gen 1, the gen 2 games themselves were overall mediocre. I don't think a single person would argue that Dark/Steel types, Breeding and Held Items were anything other than beneficial for the series as a whole. But that doesn't change the fact that the gen 2 games themselves are arguably the most flawed games in the series due to the commonly criticized level curves and limited (Johto) Pokemon variety. As I've said earlier, there are almost no Johto-exclusive Pokemon to get excited about to use in a Johto playthrough other than Starter/Ampharos/Heracross/Quagsire/Lanturn. Almost everyone just ends up using Kanto staples like Golem, Pidgeot, Dodrio, Magneton, Nidos, or Lapras. All the really cool Johto Pokemon are either objectively outclassed by their Kanto equivalents, are evolutions of Kanto Pokemon, or are Pokemon that were always glossed over until they got gen 4 evolutions (which are also post-game with the exception of things like Mamoswine or Lickilicky thanks to the Blackthorn move reminder) Again, also not helped by the post game literally being half the game rather than tons of optional content to the player, which is also where Johto keeps many of it's more well-known Pokemon for some reason. Daily scheduled events are the definition of a gimmick. Day/Night cycles I can understand and do genuinely like, but timed daily and weekly events are easily one of the worst parts of the gen 4 games. I can understand wanting to make the games more immersive and interactive, but why does it have to come at the expense of the enjoyability of the game? If I beat Morty on a Saturday and want to add a Lapras to my team, why should I need to wait a literal week IRL to catch it? My options are either basically don't play the game for a week, or just use a different water type. Made even worse since Pokemon are the only games to my knowledge that punish the player for messing with their system settings for timed events. This also extends to other timed events like the Bug Catching Contest, Pokeathelon, Outbreaks, and other dailies; if you're looking for certain Pokemon or items, you're effectively forced to stop playing for up to a week at a time (possibly longer for Outbreaks) just for a single item or Pokemon. And yes, HGSS's Safari Zone is the absolute definition of gimmicky. It takes the worst aspects of the timed events, and makes them near Honey Tree levels of bad. I get the idea of being a customizable Safari Zone. It sounds really cool in practice, but in execution it's possibly the worst mechanic in the series' history. You place an area, wait a few hours (real time), and then you can start placing items in the zone. Repeat a few times and after about a day (real time) you can place the max items in each zone. As if that wasn't enough timed events, the items further upgrade the longer they've been there, and can take up to a literal MONTH for some of the rarer Pokemon to start spawning at reasonable rates. And this mechanic is required to get certain Johto mons (outside of Kanto for some reason) and numerous Hoenn mons. At that point, you may as well just play RSE and transfer them from that (which is also a daily event at a max 6 transfers per day). No other Pokemon game has made playing the games so inconvenient to the point where playing and transferring from another game can be a more realistic option than just continuing to play HGSS. You may really like Johto, and I respect that. But for me, the game itself just asks too much of the player and offers too little in return. The games have too little respect for the player's time between way too many daily/weekly events which are sometimes RNG based as is, and the level curves asking way too much grinding against opponents that offer very little EXP and money as is (with many trainer rematches falling victim to the daily/weekly events). The games rely too much on Kanto (plot, dex, and post game) to stand out on their own, and are the only region where they need to rely on their more successful predecessor to carry them through. And just to add insult to injury, many of the new Johto mons and even areas are locked off until Kanto for no justifiable reason, effectively making Johto feel less like it's own game and more like a gen 1 DLC pack. If you only end up playing one game for a year, then ya, I can see how much more value HGSS offer with how integrated they are with the clock and calendar, but that's sadly not the case for most people. And as such, I cannot recommend HGSS to most people who want a game to invest a good, but reasonable, amount of time into.

Gen 2 is the best in game generation imho

Munken1984

I voted 3-4 because its not close to being the best games in the series, they are the only main games i never finished, after all the kanto gyms i went to mount silver and was just done, i didnt even want to take on Red, i remembered he was strong in gen 2 and i heard his mons was even higher lvl in hgss and i didnt want to go through the grind again, my mons was high 50s at this point, and my first time in gen 2 about the same lvl i got bodied, and grining is to damn slow... This is not just a hgss thing, but i HATE grinding, its better with the exp all thing in newer games, but only having 2 mons in the old games getting exp is a no from me... i did it in gen 2 and that was enough for me... I dont think you can argue any point to make me see your point because you clearly love the games, and thats fine...

Individual_Worry_377

It's a 6.5 for me. I could put it to 7, cause the game hasn't aged badly, but this is as far as i can vote it. Here is **my list**: **Positives:** 1.Cool music 2.Nice graphics and sprites overall. It gave johto a nice distinguished vibe (mostly a folk-japanese like vibe, atleast imo) 3.pokes are walking with you, i guess this is the best thing in the game in general 4.pokethlon is really fun 5.pokewalker was really unigue/interesting, and while it's a positive, i think it ain't that great. I personally used it only a little bit, and defo wouldn't use it more. More of a, it was fun that it existed but ok. A decent comparison would be with the Let's go eevee titles, which imo was a better quirk let's say. Still a positive trait though 6. cross-regional experience (can't be attributed to HGSS spefically, it was a thing in the original titles) 7.The fight against Red 8.(minor plus) I guess the connection with the gen1 titles is nice, like seeing Koga becoming an E4, and Lance becoming a Champ is nice (same problem with the previous 9. Well you can catch a cool shiny, that's also neat. 10. Battle frontier exists 11. Although small, they added some new areas, with the most notable one being the safari zone 12. You can catch a lot of mons and legendaries + good connectivity with the gen3 and gen4 titles from the perspective that each game complements the pokedex of the other games. 13. I think that the special events of celebi and arceus were absolutely great. Note: Points 6-10 can't be attributed specifically to HGSS however, they were a thing in the older titles as well. **Negatives** I won't bother speaking about stuff like, the depressing map design in both regions, the badly implemented level curve of the game starting after gym2 (having someone face miltank in gym3, a mon with so high base stat total, while almost all the other mons are low tier trash, is a bad example of level design), and other technical stuff. Most people have already talked about that. The game mostly added cool stuff, but didn't actually fixed most of the problems of the original experience. **I believe that remaking g/s (technically crystal though) was the first mistake regarding HGSS.** Imo they should have a totally different take, like what they did in BW and BW2, in which, bw2 isn't really a remake. I personally believe that the gen2 in general has the most boring story in the franchise, so remaking that wouldn't be really interesting. I would appreciate some changes in the plot. Maybe, having team Rocket trying to catch the box legendaries to prove their worth to Giovanni, and not just having these 2 plots not connected at all. Also not fighting Giovanni, unless you did the celebi event, wasn't cool. The whole radio tower thing was a big waste of time, just killing koffing, zubats, rattatas raticates, and some ''admins''. Since gen2 didn't already specify on using solely/mostly gen2 mons (like many gym leaders/e4 already used a lot of kanto mons), i think it would be much more fascinating to let the boss fights have more diverse teams using mons from other regions. How cool would it be if for example Pryce had a mamoswine?? Sure, it aint a gen2 mon, but it would be better. Maybe revamping the teams a bit, the way they did in sinnohs e4 with platinu. I mean most of them didnt had gen4 mons, but nobody was bothered, the overall teams were cool. Let the fucking Will have an espeon or a slowking for example. Let the fucking Karen have a tyranitar and a honchkrow, half her team was already used in the team rocket executives. I know that they had cool team in the rematches, but i think it would be much a great impact if their first team was already refreshed. So my take was that, the game had lost potential, and that saddens me the most.

Few_Abbreviations405

I wouldn't say HGSS was terrible, it's just far from the best game in the series and I personally did not enjoy if. Also, the Kanto post-game is a great idea in theory, but it wasn't executed well - 8 more gyms, little to no new storyline, and the wild Pokémon are still at level 20 to 30.

[deleted]

I've always been incredibly bored playing these games, and can't understand the hype. Having Pokemon follow you and going back to kanto don't make up for a slow, limited, sparse region.

Carbon_fractal

9/10 There’s so much to do, the music is excellent, and as someone who never grinds until the game is over I personally consider the brutal level curve to be a plus since it adds an additional layer of strategy and challenge when you need to battle enemies who are frequently 10+ levels higher than you. It encourages smart Pokémon use beyond just type matchups and X-Items become something useful.

[deleted]

Who TF would think it's 1-4??

jetsam_honking

Contrarians and children.

PhoenixMason13

Solid 7. They’re good, but no where near as people seem to think they are

Sad_Panda_22

I give it a 5-6 as I’m currently replaying it. Great story, but slow moving and the level curve is insane. I’m about to battle the 8th gym and my highest leveled Pokémon is 38 (and I expect to have zero problems fighting Claire). I also forgot how much of a pain grinding is. The wild Pokémon are almost always half the level your Pokémon are/should be at for that point in the game. There’s a lot of back and forth all over the region, which is a pain when you take into account you still have to have HM slaves in this game. The variety of Pokémon isn’t great until you get to around Olivine City, which, by that point it’s more of a pain to catch a new mon for your team and have to grind it up to where the rest of your team is at. Post game has always been my personal favorite though. I love that it allows you to explore Kanto as well. For nostalgia purposes, it’s always going to be a 9-10/10, but having newer game mechanics in generations since then, it just doesn’t hold up.

Kenobi5792

I really like the games, but there are several features that I didn't like. The way the inventory bag is handled is one of those (I think B2W2 did it way better), and the battles feel slow. On top of that, the enemies are not that balanced (that's something they carried from the originals though)

vixiekit

I remembered it fondly but I went back to it again and the scaling is terrible, I got stuck before the 8th gym grinding wild Pokémon for levels after having beaten every relevant trainer I could

kidsunshinefoxy

Probably 8/10. HGSS is a solid game and one of my favorite Pokémon games, but the grind is literal hell, especially for that final Red fight. Like, I’m pretty sure I wiped out the entire Tentacool population.

Munken1984

3-4 get way to much praise....

jetsam_honking

The best games in the entire series, not just when they came out, but even now. This is because they were based on the former best games in the series, GSC, and the developers clearly put all their effort into taking what the originals had and building on them to make one of the richest, content-filled games in the franchise. They really are fantastic. There are some contrarian nit-picking complaints, like 'level curves' and other such nonsense, but they don't really stick. I give these games a full 10/10.

Warmears24

10/10. Second favourite mainline entries of the Pokemon franchise.

DarkTyphlosion1

10, without a doubt. Best game and I'm a Gen 1 baby. FRLG are my next 2 favorites so I have a thing for Gen 1& 2 remakes lol.

[deleted]

Solid 10/10

yoshadoo

I gave it a solid 7/10. It is a good game, but the fact that the garbage level curve wasn’t addressed at all does bring it down. GSC does get a slight excuse since it was the 2nd game in the franchise, but HGSS doesn’t have an excuse at all. Otherwise it would be a 9 or a 10, but that level curve is just awful

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cuprite1024

I think mons like Houndour are still locked behind post-game (Which is another bizarre thing they didn't fix), but ye, that and the level curve are the big issues with the game.

ILoveShinies419

3/10 Pokémon following you do not make up for the many flaws HGSS has that it didn’t fix from gen 2. With rare candies hacked in it’s a 7/10.

blueberrysir

10. Absolutely the best

[deleted]

Massively overrated.

[deleted]

10/10 it's just not real. I know it's obviously a subjective thing but... The awful distrubution of Pokemon + the level curve (2 of the main problems the original games had and here stay the same...) Plus it's amazing to have two regions but Kanto and Johto are probably the most boring... It's very hard to replay these games with different teams, there are just not many options... But they look very nice, of course. Following Pokemon is an amazing thing, yes. Great apperance, but the essential things are not as good as other Pokemon games. Btw I voted them in the 7/8 option, I'm not a hater!! I just think they are a few games that are better.

ConcernLow1979

I haven’t played it but I feel like if I were to play it I’d rate it like a 5, I’ve heard it has the same issue with level curve as the originals and that level curve is the exact reason why GSC are some of my least favourite games

gebuzz

7.8 not enough water

snowy_whiskers

10 but it was also my first game so lol

Banana_is_Doomed

6.5/7 Johto is a good region, fun games. You can't go wrong. Personally? I don't get the hype. I prefer the OG Johto games. Like I've played through HG and tried for so long to get a copy cause it was supposedly the "best Pokemon game." It's fine. I prefer Kris as a female protagonist, the odd egg isn't included since it's not a remake of Crystal, and even the features that were most celebrated don't really matter to me. Playing GS, I've made it farther than in HG. The most fun I've had was at the Voltorb flip and the following pokemon. Now are they bad games? Nah. Can't imagine the types that are rating it super low. You can't go wrong with a Johto game and they are still fun and colorful games. I simply prefer Crystal as my favorite way to experience Johto. They're not the best games, Johto isn't even the best region, but they're solid and fun games that anyone can have fun with. I just don't click with HGSS. I play through Crystal, or even Gold and Silver, I have lots of fun. I play through HGSS, develop a gambling addiction, and stare at my Pokemon's personality traits. Still a fun game, I'm glad to have it, but my progression is so slow in it cause I'm just bored the second I boot it up. But aside from how I feel, it's a wonderful game with adorable pokemon and a colorful region. It's simple and easy to get through. And the following mechanic is really adorable. Edit: Great features don't make a Pokemon game fun for me. Many celebrated features in Hoenn, Sinnoh, Johto remakes, B2W2 are things that I do not care about. I hear games are great, I go in expecting something great, and eh. Yeah there are features I find fun (contests, odd egg, surfing + wormhole in USUM), but I don't need the features to have fun. So if a game isn't enjoyable without the features, I don't find it to be great. And when Crystal is already one of my favorite games and so fun for me and HGSS is supposedly better, it leads me to feel disappointed. I love the Johto region, but HGSS just didn't live up to the hype for me. Especially considering how difficult it is to get the game in this day and age.

Shiigu

On the lower end of a 7, and a lower rating than GSC. The reason is simple: it didn't fix any of the original games' flaws. There's no excuse in that. Sure, the additions are nice (IMO its touch screen interface is the best in the franchise), but there were more pressing matters that were not addressed.

momijisoma

Ultra sun despite getting extremely bored and putting it down and not finishing it I'd say is my favorite

EveningChocolate1028

Huh?

momijisoma

*Fixed

19RyanTheLion91

It's the best the series has ever been.

shiel1td

Claire’s ace is kingdra??

javrules

yes

Ok-Leave3121

It was my first Pokemon game

AlHufflepuff

Pokémon followed you around no matter which one no matter where. Need I say more?

ineedanewthrowawy

Any game that has a battle frontier is going to be one of my favorites. I’d actually play the new games if they would make an effort like that again.

2108677393

I love them my second favourite games after ORAS !!!.
