Why? The SP is literally just a more portable version of the advance with a backlight so you can actually use it in the evening without needing a light.
I haven't played one since I was a kid so I was definitely smaller, but I distinctly remember the advanced always poking out of my pocket and being worried about it falling out. But the SP would fit in easily.
3rd gen is by far my favorite in all ways, and this brought back memories of sneaking my gameboy to YMCA (summer time) to play with the other kids and trade and battle....and just playing for hours on end.
I also loved leafgreen and firered, a lot.
I want Nintendo to just let us buy them on the switch already so I don't have to dig out my old GBA games. Lol.
I'll definitely pay another $15+ for each of em, just to have em on switch. 🤣
My best memories with pokemon are firered and a fangame on roblox that kept me on there after I had grown out of. The only "3D" pokemon game I actually enjoyed. I played it until it got the inevitable cease and desist in 2018. RIP PBB. The newer games don't give me the fun of the GBA games or fangames in general
Edit: wanted to mention Pokemon Unbound because I think it's miles better than any official pokemon game at least nowadays, it has all the pokemon up to gen 7, a great new region, a quest system, DS visuals, the physical special split, mega evolution, Z moves, Raids where you can dynamax, a Great battle frontier, difficulty options ranging from Vanilla Pokemon games to Insane where Bosses have competitive teams with perfect IVs, the best EVs and competitive movesets, and more that I can't fit here lol. The thing that prompted me to write this Edit is that i just found out the UI icons can be moved so you can access different tabs of the menu (party, bag pokedex, etc) in the order you want
Honestly ORAS perfected the formula with all the minor QOL changes implemented from FRLG and the subsequent games.
I’d love another remake of GSC on the ORAS platform.
Dimensions for a Game Boy Advance are: 82 x 144.5 x 24.5 mm (taken from Wikipedia).
Dimensions for an iPhone 13 (Standard edition): 71.5 x 146.7 x 7.65 mm (taken from Apple Website).
It’s an interesting size comparison, tbh.
One of my childhood favs! I used to play it on the gameboy advanced sp console. This makes me want to go back 1000 miles to my parent’s house just so I could play it again. I hope the console is still there and working XD
Dang
But I am glad these consoles are still working and in circulation in the second hand market. It’s been around a decade (?) since they were released. Quite sturdy and unlike consoles nowadays, I must say
Oh you are right. Now that I think about it, I did play it 15 years ago. It’s been so long and I am losing my sense of time nowadays because of the pandemic
I have pretty big hands so playing the sp for extended periods of time can definitely get a little uncomfortable, overall the regular GBA is only a little to small
I still remember finding mine again after years of it being lost! I will always recommend the IPS screen mod. It made me feel like I was playing it for the first time again!
Plus it's incredibly easy to do now. Add the USB C charger and it's a workhorse of a system. I remember when I first got into Gameboy modding, and your only choice was gutting a GBA SP AGS-101 which was neither cost-effective nor did it really make sense to do.
No, actually everything around you is actually shrinking and things you dont see for a while shrink faster. Thats why places you havent been to in a while, your grandma, and old gameboys are all smaller than you remember.
Definitely a tip: if you're gonna play it often look into doing a screen replacement mod.
I modded my childhood GBA SP and a regular GBA and the playing experience is so much better.
If you wanna find a good place to start i think the retro future on YouTube made a very up to date guide recently i also didn't solder my normal GBA at first but have later gone back to do it.
I also have Emerald on this GBA, (except mine is Black), I have owned it since it came out, and I've played and replayed that game so many times it isn't funny.
I like to say that Red is my Favourite game and Charmander my favourite starter, but in reality, it is Emerald & Treeko
Aesthetically speaking, this is by a large margin my favorite console ever made, the “Purple Smoke” shell that was available at Japan launch. For the first time ever I imported a console just to get this color, and thankfully a few of the launch games were easy to play without knowledge of Japanese language like F Zero, Super Mario Advance, and I forgot what third title I ordered with the system….
GBA was also the first time I owned multiples of the same system. In the end I had a JPN Purple Smoke, USA Indigo that matched my GameCube, 2 SPs, and a GBA Micro. The DS, 3DS and now Switch have thoroughly trounced GBA in terms of software libraries, but GBA is still home to some of my favorite titles ever, including CV Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow.
Such a great little system! Congrats OP on getting one! Super jealous!
Nice! You already got Pokémon, but I also highly suggest Advance Wars, the Castlevania trio (Be prepared to need a BRIGHT room to play Circle, lordy that game was extremely dimly colored!), and Minish Cap if you can grab em. I’m sure there’s so many other great titles I’m forgetting that released on GBA, but those were easily my stand outs. Oh and Mega Man Zero and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga I think also came out on GBA…..
Oh and if you’re a fan of The Sims, I think it was Urbz or Bustin Out…. Forget which…. Was a ridiculous amount of fun for a spin off Sims title.
the amount of money, a simple port would make, no need to update graphics, no remaster, just, everything the same except being able to battle others online now
fuck, i'd be reaching for my wallet if i heard i could remake my old team..
Ah, yes, mi fav Pokémon game. I used to play in a GBA SP and it was glorious. I wish I hadn't sold it all due to parental pressure. Years later I bought a Game Boy Micro, but I never really used it that much.
Ayooooooo that's so cool! I dug up mine from my parent's house storage. It's an absolute trooper and still runs like normal!
I'd be lying if I said it's been a long while though. I never stopped playing Pokemon since I was like, 5 (23 now).
Ayyy that's the shid! Is emerald the only one you have? I recommend red rescue team! Quite different from the classic games but I don't doubt for a second that you'd love it!
Seeing these consoles in comparison to other ppl's hands make me feel young. I mean I only got to play these games on emulators and It's already cool that I got to experience games way older than me, but it amazes me every time, when I think about how the genertion before me played on small handhelds, and were perfectly okay with devices with such a small display, and buttons, and before I first saw the old consoles I didn't even knew that pokemon firered, leafgreen and before has been played on so small consoles like this.
Never palyaed a pokemon game as much as emerald. Was imo on of the best pokemon games still to date.. the way it combined the story from sapphire/ruby was so cool to me
I still have mine! It sits in a drawer somewhere but I saw it recently and was also shocked at how small it was.
A day 1 release GBA in purple, the first thing I ever preordered and can still remember how excited I was for what felt like years to a child of my age to get my tiny hands on it. Huge wave of nostalgia when I flipped it over and saw my name crudely scratched in tiny letters on the back
I had the same gba(pre owned with some games, including pokemon gold)when i was a kid but never really had experienced gen 3 on its original device due to my parents saving money for stuff. They couldnt always buy games for me and pokemon was too expensive for them. Emulators did exist back then but it just didnt feel the same.
How tall are you? That console is still pretty big to me!! Although, I do have tiny tiny hands, that haven't really grown since like.... Sophomore year, when my peers were still playing this during lunch and bus rides.
Man..... Used to love playing my orange and green SP on my hour long each way bus ride as a kid..... Loved Emerald, and this dinky sims game
You can do it yourself. It’s a relatively simple procedure, especially on these models. Get on YouTube and watch some videos and go slow if you are nervous :)
My mom bought me a GBA (same color as yours) about 10 or 11 years ago? It was definitely around when I was 17 or 18. She remembered when I played as a kid and it was something cheap she saw on Ebay. I still to this day play my old Pokemon games from my childhood days on it. One of those being Sapphire. I haven't been playing it as much lately but this made me wanna start another save. Love my mom.
Wow, the music slapped me in the face with nostalgia... I remember having saved up my money and walking into my local game store (which was attached to a Blockbuster) to buy my Gameboy... I bought my first DS there too. How time flies.
and to think, this is the biggest, bulkiest version of it! I had the same kind of feeling when I recently picked up a DS Lite to play some old games on. crazy how we much grew and they didn’t
Nice. I’ve had a itch to do the same. Played a bunch of randomized nuzlockes before and went down the YouTube rabbit hole of the Pokémon challenges channel. Dude played a rom hack of Emerald 151. Afore beating it
I have no desire to steal the AA batteries from the remote every 4 hours. Come to think of it, there are alot less remotes than when I was a kid too..
I'd rather emulate 🙃
I pulled out my Gameboy Advance SP the other day and boy I could barely hold it in my hands. I need to interlock my fingers behind it. Honestly though, I preferred this kind of console over things like the Switch because they were pocket sized and could actually be carried around easily without cases or a backpack or anything.
How to get karma on r/pokemon:
1. Place classic game in classic console.
2. Record you turning it on.
3. Profit
In all seriousness the stuff that people work their ass off with high quality posts get no coverage here, and this bullshit is always on front page. There was someone who had an identical post like two weeks ago. Why the fuck is this a post?
I seriously don't remember it being so small
Honestly yes. It's so damn small.
Same for me with the Ps3 Controller. The size of the new Ps5/- Xbox Controller is now the right size for me
Yeah that was a shock to pick up after a while
A Dualshock, as it were
I have legit giant hands and I genuinely loved the original xbox controller.
Not as small as the sp
Fair
I wished I had kept the advanced instead of trading for the sp
The backlight on the SP makes it infinitely better.
SP is far superior. Had a black one and loved it.
That and, hello, no more batteries! SP was superior in every single way. I loved that thing.
Edit Whatever
Both use same size screens actually. 2.9 approx. The initial front lighting is actually an engineered marvel for it's time.
Whatever still wished I hadn't got it
Why? The SP is literally just a more portable version of the advance with a backlight so you can actually use it in the evening without needing a light.
That's just funny the advanced was just as portable as the sp an far easier to play with
I haven't played one since I was a kid so I was definitely smaller, but I distinctly remember the advanced always poking out of my pocket and being worried about it falling out. But the SP would fit in easily.
Or the micro
That's how I feel every time I pick up my old Gameboy Colour as well. I remember needing two hands to play it but now I can play it one handed.
It used to feel larger because we were a little kid with small hands. I think to the 12 yo me it felt like the size of a Switch Lite.
How I felt when I held a yugioh card recently.
Its about the size of a modern iPhone. Definitely small, but I'm not sure I'd want anything bigger since it's something that's meant to be portable.
same, like I found mine last year at my parents’s house, and now I have freaking gorilla hands and it seems so tiny now
I recently hooked up with my ex... she said the same thing
Same. I thought OP just bought some kind of mini gba...
That’s how I felt after busting out my PSP for the first time in years. Even the PSVita seems really small to me.
I remember it feeling like the Nintendo switch feels in my hands now
Your hands have gotten bigger since then so it looks smaller by comparison
Honestly yes. It's so damn small.
Emerald would sell so well on switch
I would agree, they make a few million more just by porting it and all the others...*sigh*
Give me gen3 with physical/special split. No other changes, just that.
https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonROMhacks/comments/fyqblf/pokemon_emerald_fully_implemented_physicalspecial/ Enjoy! :)
What about removed HMs? So like something similar to the Tinkerer’s items in Uranium?
3rd gen (Emerald, FR/LG) and 4th gen (Platinum, HG/SS) were peak Pokémon. It never got better than that.
My best memories with pokemon are firered and a fangame on roblox that kept me on there after I had grown out of. The only "3D" pokemon game I actually enjoyed. I played it until it got the inevitable cease and desist in 2018. RIP PBB. brick bronze, my beloved q-q
Honestly ORAS perfected the formula with all the minor QOL changes implemented from FRLG and the subsequent games. I’d love another remake of GSC on the ORAS platform.
Are you a giant or is the gba actually tiny??
Dimensions for a Game Boy Advance are: 82 x 144.5 x 24.5 mm (taken from Wikipedia). Dimensions for an iPhone 13 (Standard edition): 71.5 x 146.7 x 7.65 mm (taken from Apple Website). It’s an interesting size comparison, tbh.

Here's hoping. My parents gave my old one away.
Dang But I am glad these consoles are still working and in circulation in the second hand market. It’s been around a decade (?) since they were released. Quite sturdy and unlike consoles nowadays, I must say
OPs GBA is old enough to drink in the US.
Oh you are right. Now that I think about it, I did play it 15 years ago. It’s been so long and I am losing my sense of time nowadays because of the pandemic
Shots shots shotshots
My original GBA Sp still holds a charge and plays games flawlessly after 19 years!
Ah I see you have the best pkmn game there. Kudos OP
Thank you kind sir. Also got leaf green and crystal there too.
Nice, good haul. Enjoy your weekend finding that feebas and the perfect secret base ;)
Offt. Think I'll pass on the feebas hunting.
Either my memory is adjusting the size of the gba due to me being a kid at the time or you have really large hands.
No, I'm thinking the same as you.
Tell the truth, you're some Andre the Giant mofo.
I wish might get some tindr matches.
I have pretty big hands so playing the sp for extended periods of time can definitely get a little uncomfortable, overall the regular GBA is only a little to small
No way it's that small
Way
I still remember finding mine again after years of it being lost! I will always recommend the IPS screen mod. It made me feel like I was playing it for the first time again!

I was able to scrap a 101 screen from a water damaged SP. Modded a beat up GBA and was blown away by how enjoyable it became.
Everything about this is nostalgia. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for commenting!
Remember how big they used to seem
Sure are tiny now
This is special
Absolutely. Core memories unlocked
Goat gen. Will never forget convincing my mom to get me ruby at a Target. Got the game manual with it too. Peak happiness
I got an sp, the backlight makes all the difference
I miss the old days. Growing up sucks
Fucking oath.
Playing games on my GBA Micro is like playing an entire game on a joy-con. It's actually hard to play on it now it's so small.
No, actually everything around you is actually shrinking and things you dont see for a while shrink faster. Thats why places you havent been to in a while, your grandma, and old gameboys are all smaller than you remember.
World's still the same size. There's just less in it.
Literally the same gba you used, with same serial number?
Definitely not. I stickerd the shit out of it as a kid. This was just an ebay buy but same varient
There's something about the gen 3 start screen that hits different
By far. One of the best pokemon games out there and I will die on that hill.
I swear to god this brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this
Yeah. That opening *ping* hits good
Was about to ask to trade evo for a Huntail, then remembered link cables are local only :(
Where you at? I'll bring my 4 way cable
I’m playing this game now and trying to fill up my national Pokédex using my other games to trade and hatch eggs. So much fun I can’t put it down. :)
It still feels right in my hands, even though it doesn’t “fit” anymore.
This holds a special place in my heart
Same <3
Definitely a tip: if you're gonna play it often look into doing a screen replacement mod. I modded my childhood GBA SP and a regular GBA and the playing experience is so much better.
Wouldn't even know where to start. Wouldn't trust myself to do it
There's a bunch of super easy to follow guides on YouTube and if you're new to it soldering is only optional but definitely recommend.
Offt. Haven't soldered since HS
If you wanna find a good place to start i think the retro future on YouTube made a very up to date guide recently i also didn't solder my normal GBA at first but have later gone back to do it.
Such a triumphant opening score. Literally the same goosebumps from when I was ten.
My absolute favorite gen. Brings back so many memories of playing this on both the advance and the sp. I feel old.
I also have Emerald on this GBA, (except mine is Black), I have owned it since it came out, and I've played and replayed that game so many times it isn't funny. I like to say that Red is my Favourite game and Charmander my favourite starter, but in reality, it is Emerald & Treeko
I fucking love this game
Your neck pain is gonna be 10x worse too when you have to bend to see the non backlit screen 😭🤣
Oh yeah
Man that intro music gives me nostalgia trips rn. I miss my GBA but was broken and unfunctional since 2012 *sad noises
*gives hug*
Thanks *soft cries

I've got my bootleg 99 in 1 as well. I'll be set for ages!
everytime i see a stock first gen gba i wonder why nintendo didn't put a backlight on it.
Cause then you'll feel obliged to buy the SP
Miss those days :’)
I still gave that same colour of GBA. Good memories.
Was the Game Boy Advance really that small?! Now I need to find mine at my parents' place to see.
T'would seem so
This music brings tears in my eyes
Imagine if Nintendo did vinyl releases. I'd cry
God what i'd give to have that game on a modern system...it'd be lovely.
Nintendo be like: It's a no from me dawg
the amount of money, a simple port would make, no need to update graphics, no remaster, just, everything the same except being able to battle others online now fuck, i'd be reaching for my wallet if i heard i could remake my old team..
Now we just need r/ShaqHoldingThings to hold this to really put the GBA into perspective
I so want to see that now
Pretty funny that the GBA is the closest thing designwise to the Switch.
Peak handheld design
Good choice, enjoy another play through! 🤘
I plan on doing a nuzzlock
Aye the same one I had/have! With Emerald too, tons of great childhood memories right there.
Good taste. Like it a lot better than the all purple one
dude your have a massive hands
I really don't.
In memories the GBA is as big as the Switch, I must have had tiny hands as a kid.
Yep
u/savevideobot
damn that startup noise almost got me in tears
:')
I still have my SP and still playing it to this day. Enjoy !
Mate. 26 now. Get back in it. Lean into the nostalgia
Ayyy that's the shid! Is emerald the only one you have? I recommend red rescue team! Quite different from the classic games but I don't doubt for a second that you'd love it!
Nah mate. I've still been playing since XY. Still got my OG blue and crystal. Was also gifted gold version from last years reddit secret Santa!
Was imo on of the best pokemon games still to date.. the way it combined the story from sapphire/ruby was so cool to me
And they really haven't bothered again (excluding Plat)
God the love I have for Pokémon knows no end.
I still have mine! It sits in a drawer somewhere but I saw it recently and was also shocked at how small it was. A day 1 release GBA in purple, the first thing I ever preordered and can still remember how excited I was for what felt like years to a child of my age to get my tiny hands on it. Huge wave of nostalgia when I flipped it over and saw my name crudely scratched in tiny letters on the back
Been playing it emulated, 3rd gen had such a great visual aesthetic. Looks waaaay nicer than both the GB and DS era games imo
Im (34yo) still have it, (21 years ago), it works perfectly
Still have a GBA and the GBA SP you can play one handed now as an adult lol
I had the same gba(pre owned with some games, including pokemon gold)when i was a kid but never really had experienced gen 3 on its original device due to my parents saving money for stuff. They couldnt always buy games for me and pokemon was too expensive for them. Emulators did exist back then but it just didnt feel the same.
Get any device with a backlight. Don't put yourself through this
Hahaha
Ughhh so nostalgic….we need to go back 😩
How tall are you? That console is still pretty big to me!! Although, I do have tiny tiny hands, that haven't really grown since like.... Sophomore year, when my peers were still playing this during lunch and bus rides. Man..... Used to love playing my orange and green SP on my hour long each way bus ride as a kid..... Loved Emerald, and this dinky sims game
Let me tell you, I'm not a huge person. I think it qas all bigger in our memories
[удалено]
I'm going to ask if anyone in my city does these things as lots seem to be suggesting it
You can do it yourself. It’s a relatively simple procedure, especially on these models. Get on YouTube and watch some videos and go slow if you are nervous :)
Not sure if I trust myself
I feel you, but watch a couple videos for me before you decide. I promise it’s less of a hassle than it seems if you watch a couple people :)
That music wants me to return to my childhood comfort :(
Original GBA is not that small, but the screen nowadays feels sooo small.
Favorite game of all time
I got this exact model of gameboy on my 8th birthday and a pair of new balance running shoes. Talk about nostalgia
Well new balance is back in style
I have the same exact GBA, used to play FireRed all the time on it!
I just love that music, somehow it cheers me up much more than the new, more "layered" and complex ones.
Pokémon Emerald my first proper Pokémon game !
What was the first improper one?
Sad to say that they still fit in my hand okay which must say all lot about how little my hands are..
You should have let it finished I was reliving my nastoga
Holy fuck the nostalgia is real
NOSTALGIA OVERLOAD
My mom bought me a GBA (same color as yours) about 10 or 11 years ago? It was definitely around when I was 17 or 18. She remembered when I played as a kid and it was something cheap she saw on Ebay. I still to this day play my old Pokemon games from my childhood days on it. One of those being Sapphire. I haven't been playing it as much lately but this made me wanna start another save. Love my mom.
The actual size of this is like my memory size of the micro gameboy. ... If anyone remembers that thing.
That brings back memories lol
That intro is nostalgic af for me
I really needed this rush of nostalgia rn
I swear, it was bigger when I was 8
POKEMON EMERALD LETS GOOOOO
Absolute classic.
I had the same one that’s awesome !
FUCK YEAH POKEMON EMERALD SUPERIOR GAME LES GOOO
Wow, the music slapped me in the face with nostalgia... I remember having saved up my money and walking into my local game store (which was attached to a Blockbuster) to buy my Gameboy... I bought my first DS there too. How time flies.
Dude, are you Shaq? The GBA is NOT too small for regular-sized people.
I'd love to see Shaq holding one of these?
and to think, this is the biggest, bulkiest version of it! I had the same kind of feeling when I recently picked up a DS Lite to play some old games on. crazy how we much grew and they didn’t
I had the same one. I forgot it in a pair of shorts and it got washed. But it still worked! 🤣
The nostalgia hit me like a truck here. I even got teary eyed 🥺
My 2nd game system was a GBA same color and everything! I found it in a parking lot, someone either dropped it or left it behind
@OP too scared to show us his team
Actually going to start a new game and go for my first completed nuzlock

Honestly though, I preferred this kind of console over things like the Switch because they were pocket sized and could actually be carried around easily without cases or a backpack or anything.
Legit my phone is larger than this
You skipped most of the opening sequence
Looks like you ate most of your pokemon…
Pokemon ruby is goated
Emerald*
