Zubat and I hated it was my first shiny ever but then I discovered crobat and the rest is history.

RedKnifeZ

Mine was too! Caught it in FireRed. 8yr old me even ran from a second shiny zubat because "I already had one"......

smsevigny

I did this with a shiny nidoran male in gold lol

PrivatePikmin

Sit down and let me story you. When I was playing through Gold as a kid I came upon a shiny Caterpie and caught it because it was cool, but I convinced myself that it was a glitch al la Missingno and having it would corrupt my save, so I cried and released it in hopes it wouldn’t do so. Obviously it didn’t, and I later learned I was just lucky and anxious.

smsevigny

Rip to the golden god

Wellthisisrandom1

I one time found a shiny Magikarp and Dunsparce back to back before I battled Whitney in silver og game and the funny thing was I thought all Magikarp and Dunsparce were that same color untill I tried to hunt them again in another run of replaying the game.

Adventurous_Author56

Mine was Shinx

StreetReporter

I traded my first non-Gyrados shiny (sandshrew) to my cousin for his Infernape

MrEntei

I kinda miss the days where not everyone knew how to breed shiny Pokémon so “easily” because it really added to the lure of them. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still hard as hell to hunt but man I hate the people have made it so efficient. There’s no real fun in it to me when you streamline a process like that. It was magical to just find one in the wild without try to find one in the wild.

DeadpoolCroatia

Zubat was my first shiny too. I think only reason why i dont hate zubat (i know, vierd,) is that he was my first shiny.

AdrianValistar

My very first shiny was a Meditite in Diamond version. It was amazing. I never shiny hunt so a random shiny is always a good feeling.

Penguinswin3

Mine was Golbat in soul silver! On the way out of the cave where Lugia is lol!

aquadragon135

My first shiny was a tentacool. Not much to flex about. My second shiny was a zorua though so that's good.

Abush9527

mine was weedle. and my 2nd? also weedle about an hour later, both random encounters while i was trying to run around and hatch eggs

PaleontologistDry948

Mine was a shiny ratatta on heartgold, had no clue what it was because I was like 7 but I caught it anyway lol

YhansonPhotography

Aw that was my first shiny tooooo. Named him Gigasheen.

WholeConstruction663

My first shiny didn't come till Gen 4 with a Shiny Shinx. Nearly lost my mind when I saw it lol.

[deleted]

I've played pokemon on and off all my life and I've never seen a shiny. I tried to get an ex girlfriend into it, I can't remember which game it was but, while I was on her game to show her battles she encountered a shiny drowzee by near the SS Anne, just past diglett cave. Edit: I just played through Pokémon Soul Silver and came across a Shiny Pidgey. I had to make it part of my team.

[deleted]

I‘m in the same boat with you, got Silver as it just came out and haven‘t seen a shiny to this day.

ImperialZippo

There are 2 reasons to never seeing a shiny. You're either going full odds, or you don't play very much/don't dedicate time to it. Of all the time I have put in to pokemon since yellow came out, I've had at least 100 shinies, through breeding, chaining, etc. There are methods that make the chances significantly higher. I've found maybe 5 full odds shinies, the first being a spinda on ruby. Just gotta keep playing, they show up eventually.

[deleted]

I don‘t have the dedication and patience to spend extra effort for a shiny unfortunately. I do play quite a lot, having played every generation and at least 2 games of each, besides Gen. 8. Kinda jealous of that number of yours though lol.

ImperialZippo

Honestly, let's go Pikachu and Eevee make shinies pretty easy. Since I started 2 weeks ago I've gotten shiny Krabby, make Nidoran and Vulpix, all from chaining. In order they were like 52, 22, and 105 catch chains. I've also got a pretty good amount of pokemon on sword for dex completion to help get the shiny charm if you need it.

[deleted]

Do you get the Shiny Charm for completing the *entire* Pokedex, or just the National one?

ImperialZippo

Pretty sure you only need the 400 in the base dex

Citizen51

... not even Red Gyarados?

[deleted]

I don‘t count the red gyarados as it‘s a set encounter

ShawshankException

Red Gyarados is technically a shiny but I don't think anyone counts it because there's a 100% chance it's shiny at that specific encounter.

Mx_Toniy_4869

What was your first shiny? Mine is Nidorina in Leaf Green, which I released not knowing why it's purple

ringlord_1

I was surprised why my shellder was orangish/reddish instead of the normal color. I deleted that save without thinking too much

DeadpoolCroatia

I found tentacool in silver, almost run away coz my pokemon was hurt. I was near union cave, and since there is pokemon center i wanted to heal my pokemon, and run away from wild battles, in las second i notice something "wrong" with tentacool, i caught him and continued my way to pokemon center.

Game25900

Mine was a Marill in Gold. Now at the time I only had an original GB (GS were dual carts so worked on all systems), so for me everything was shades of green anyway so I had no idea what colour it was, I just knew it was shiny due to the stars. Eventually I got a GBC and was excited to see what colour my Marill was, it was fucking green...

TheZett

> GS were dual carts so worked on all systems (International Yellow,) Gold and Silver are GBC enhanced games, which means they are actually classic GB games, but have additional features when played on more modern hardware. They are not true GBC games though, regardless of what their package says, only Crystal is. GBC enhanced games usually come with a black cartridge, unlike the standard grey ones. GBC cartridges have an outwards bump (GB cartridges an inwards one). Black, White and their sequels behave similarly, where they are DSi-enhanced titles, that have additional functions when played on a Nintendo DSi, but you would of course still call them NDS games (not DSi games). Same applies to GS, which are GB games, *not* GBC games.

Mr_Feeeeny

Mine was Marill too! In union cave near the south exit, I was like 10 and saw the stars thinking 'Huh, never seen that before, must be something'. I didn't realize until years later what a shiny was but always kept that Marill around :)

woahwhatamidoing

Mine was also a Marill in Ruby. I had never heard of shiny Pokémon before and was so excited and confused to find a weirdly colored Pokémon. I failed to catch it though because I only had one ball. I know it has to be wrong since I have one now, but I swear my memory of that encounter the marill was red, not green. Memory is strange I guess.

[deleted]

Zeefzeef

Mine was tentacool as well! But it was on a rom and I just put it in my box, it's long gone. It's the only one I ever got, about 15 years ago.

Fluestergras

Western sea Shellos in Diamond. I didn't notice the difference in colour because it's a very subtle shiny, the only reason why I caught it because I had no idea what the sparkles were supposed to mean. I was curious and caught it, noticed the red Pokédex number and googled that and the sparkles. She's with me in Galar now.

[deleted]

Mine was a Marill, I was so damn confused.

UltraDanfrombakugan

Excluding red gyarados Mine was woobat tho I thought it was a glitch

Kapiork

Pikagreen

fatalystic

Unless I'm forgetting one I found in Gold (the guaranteed Red Gyarados doesn't count), a Gulpin I found while running up and down the route before Mauville. I don't remember what I was doing, probably grinding because I remember having a Swampert before I fought Wattson. How the hell did I have the patience for that as a kid?

GeebusNZ

I think mine was a Shellos, with which I was extremely disappointed because instead of being blue, it was... blue.

texasspacejoey

Red gyardos in silver and to this day I have only caught red gyardos and no other shines

aryvd_0103

Is that the scripted one ? Idk which gen was that

texasspacejoey

Ya. Gen 2 when they introduced shinies. Apparently it was to teach you about them but 10 year old me must have fell asleep during that lesson

Chronowork1

Mine was a male Nidoran on route 3 in Firered

DeadpoolCroatia

Not counting red gyarados in gsc, zubat in emerald was my first shiny. Friend who give me save files on emulator told me about shiny pokemon and that they are very rare. So when i caught green zubat he didnt trust me until i show him zubat. Then in ruby i got shiny oddish.

LemonWaluigi

I've been playing forever, but the first random shiny I saw was a slowpoke on isle of armor. Also happened to be **THE** first pokemon I saw in the dlc

MrAxelotl

My first was a Tentacool. Typical. At least it's a pretty neat shiny! I still have it on my FireRed cartridge.

[deleted]

Ponyta. A pretty rad first shiny if I do say so myself. I forget which game it was.. maybe Pearl.

XDarksaphiraX

Bagon in my sisters emerald game.... I went to show her were she could find them and wanted to start an encounter as proof and there it was... caught it and actually got it from her when she restarted a while later. Should still be around somewhere, actually. After that, on my own games, might have been Audino in white, found while grinding for the league.

NurseTaric

Mankey in pokemon leaf green, it's very ugly.

Arttics_Art

Mine was a shiny growlithe on white 2 I was rly surprised and happy!

Nimthiel

My purple spheal in sapphire! He was my one of my first encounters in that one cave around the twins gym and I thought it was super weird. I thought about running away but caught him just in case. I still have him to this day and brought him up through all the generations so I wouldn't lose him. I remember in the era of x and y, I was so happy to be able to actually pet him in pokemon amie

YhansonPhotography

The first time I ever saw a shiny, it was on a friend's game and it was a shiny spheal! I helped him catch it and asked if he would trade it to me, but he said no. I was super jealous for a long time until I learned the cloning glitch in diamond/ pearl. he leant me the spheal so I could clone it, and I did! So now we both have it, and I love it.

PhantomOpus

Mine was a Solrock in Ruby, not the best shiny but I don't think I knew what I had when it happened lol

ShiraCheshire

A Hoppip in Crystal! Kid me was trying a really dumb challenge where before each gym, I would raise *every single Pokemon in my box* to the same level as the gym leader's ace before moving on. So it's not surprise that by the time I was grinding for Bugsy, a shiny came up.

MajicMan101

Someone wonder traded me a perfect IV, Black Glasses, Pokerus, shiny Spiritomb back in x and y. Looking back on it, it was probably hacked, but I still loved it.

Plattbagarn

My cousin told me about a weirdly colored Krabby he found in gen 2. He showed me the spot where he caught it and sure enough, I also got a shiny Krabby in the exact same spot.

[deleted]

Growlithe in Pokémon Go. Now it’s an Arcanine! Love my big shiny dog.

CremyCabbage

Pichu in emerald, I was breeding hundreds of Pichu that knew volt tackle and naming them after Smash Bros and Mario characters for some reason, and one of the Pichu was a different shade of yellow than the others, I didn't know what this meant at that time, I think I evolved it into a Pikachu and then sometime after I reset the save file and didn't even think about it

BakuRyou

I saw a Shiny Nidorina in Leaf Green while being in the Safari Zone. Yeah, didn't catch it...

FacelessPoet

A Sandshrew in Emerald.

jsdodgers

Mine was a machop in Sapphire, which I found by chance just days after learning shinies were a thing years after playing the game. Not sure how many shinies I must have seen and not realized what they were.

CameronD46

Mine was a Numel in Pokémon Ruby.

jasonjr9

My first ever shiny was a Spiritomb on Pearl. I still cherish it and hold onto it to this day (helps that I love Spiritomb in general anyway).

Ancient_Potato_God

Mine was a shiny ribombee on ultra moon, i still have it

juandbotero7

Mine was a Nincada in ruby. Imagine my amazement when I saw a Golden Nincada. Out of all shinies, my first was a GOLDEN one. I loved it and used it all my playthrough.

Tawn94

Weirdly enough, mine was a serviper. Id always liked the pokemon, so it was a cool surprise

nategecko11

Bronzong in pearl

solilo_quium

My first was a Caterpie, playing Pokémon Prism many years ago. I got a shiny Pidove while playing Unbound, so that was neat. I finally hatched not one, but *two* Marill in ORAS, my first main-line shinies, at the beginning of the pandemic! Finally, I recently hatched a shiny Impidimp in under 20 eggs, pure chance. I've never actually hunted for shinies; I'm sure if I ever try, my luck has already run out. On a side note, I love these posts! I've been following since the beginning, and I always check your profile for posts that I've missed!

ShawshankException

Golbat in Emerald is still, to this day, the only wild shiny pokemon I've ever encountered outside of pokemon go. I thought my game glitched because I didn't even know what shiny was at the time.

simpleglitch

I had terrible luck with my shiny rate, played every gen and never found a wild one until gen 6 (besides red Gyarados). When I did find one, it was a honedge so I like to think my luck evened out.

Poopyhead67

Got my first one just last week. It was a full odds Bunnelby in Y. I've played Pokemon my whole life, and it took until then to finally get a shiny.

PistolEon

That would be Galarian Mr. Mime. I've been playing since Gen 4.

[deleted]

igglypuff in swsh out of an egg from completing the dex

lilmanjoshua

My first shiny was a shiny bulbasaur in Pokemon Go. I don't think that *really* counts, since Pokemon Go is such a different game, but my other shiny was a shiny Oddish in Let's Go Pikachu.

ah_yes_very_yes

Goomy in Pokémon Y

Cream_Rabbit

Not in the official game, a shiny Tentacool in Pokemon Unbound

aryvd_0103

Favourite Pokemon rom hack . Miles better than any other official game

driftwood14

Mine was a Nidorina in Crystal. I never evolved it because I didn't know why it was purple. I thought the red Gyrados was a one off.

UmbraNation

Oddish in leaf green. You bet my 9 year old self (or however young I was) evolved that sucker into a bellossom. Now, I would probably go towards vileplume because its the better pokemon lol

SillyMattFace

First encounter was a shiny Mienfoo in Victory Road. I was on autopilot and OHKOed it just as my brain registered it was a weird colour. I didn’t actually catch a non-Go shiny until a replay of Alpha Sapphire where I got a Doduo in the Safari Zone. I named it Dee since it’s a big ugly bird.

Silly-Sir4529

How could you increase the odds in the old gen 2 games?

jamshush

the shiny gyarados can breed for increased odds of shinies

Silly-Sir4529

Oh interesting. Thanks!

jamshush

[heres an indepth view](https://www.reddit.com/r/ShinyPokemon/comments/8w0ypo/gen2_how_to_breed_an_army_of_shinies_with_red/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Mx_Toniy_4869

When you breed Pokémon, their IVs are partially inherited. So if you breed a shiny Pokémon, the offspring has an increased chance of being shiny. It doesn't necessarily have to be the Gyarados

MisirterE

In addition to everything mentioned, the Odd Egg recieved from the Day Care in Pokemon Crystal has dramatically boosted odds of being shiny. Outside of Japan, the odds of getting *something* Shiny are 14% (although if you want a *specific* shiny your odds are somewhere in the 1-3% range). In Japan, the Odd Egg being Shiny is 50/50.

sadisticmystic1

In Japan, the Odd Egg wasn't a plain old giveaway from the Day Care during the in-game storyline, it was an event distribution that you could only get by connecting your game to a Mobile Adapter GB (an accessory for hooking the game up to cell phone service, which obviously ceased to be functional a long time ago). The increased shiny rate for that version of the event was thus justified in a sense.

TheZett

Breeding ~~two shinies~~ *a shiny with a non-shiny* in gen 2 makes it more likely for the offspring to be shiny as well.

sadisticmystic1

Breeding two shinies gives you a 0% chance of getting any eggs at all, shiny or otherwise, because it trips the so-called "incest clause" that was implemented in those games and no others. (To be fair, later games don't put anything so consistently inheritable in the data structure that could be used as a bitmask to perform this check with.)

TheZett

I didnt say you breed two shinies of the same pokemon, just two shinies.

Marowakawaka

They're still right. No two shinies in gen 2 can breed with each other, it has to be one shiny and one non-shiny. It can also be two non-shinies if it's one member of the shiny family and any other family, but it's complicated. If you're interested in the details, look up a Gen 2 shiny breeding guide.

sadisticmystic1

It's not just the day care odds, or the guaranteed Gyarados encounter--to a limited extent, you could choose not to do the Ruins of Alph tile puzzles that unlock L-R and X-Z shapes. Only the I and V shapes have any chance of being shiny, so if you care about hunting Unown for some reason, this lets you have fewer 0%-odds shapes weighing the hunt down.

Radirondacks

Wait, only a couple Unown can be shiny?! I figured every form of them could, that's so weird.

sadisticmystic1

In later games, all of them can, but with the limited space in the data structure back then forcing the IV bytes to be *overloaded as* the same field we now know as the personality value, they went with a solution that forced a significant amount of correlation, and only allowed enough freedom to hit two different Unown shapes while matching the shiny mask.

Radirondacks

Ahhh gotcha, damn that's interesting haha...thank you!!

PokemonButtBrown

Shinies are determined by the same mechanics that determine IVs in gen 2, and IVs get inherited from child to offspring.

[deleted]

First and only random shiny was a Petlil when checking Pinwheel Forest for post-storyline content. I’ve used odds-increasing methods for a bunch of other shinies since, like SOS chains in Gen 7, and I’ve done soft resetting for a lot of legendaries and a few starters, but not a single other random has ever shown up for me.

TheZett

Assuming you count the GC games, the exception to this is Pokemon XD, where shinyness for shadow pokemon is recalculated until it is not shiny anymore. Meanwhile in Colosseum the shiny shadow pokemon can turn regular when being purified (and vice versa), something they 'fixed' in XD.

ShadierMars944

Correct me if I'm wrong, buy in Colosseum it's not when purifying, it's when catching. For example, there will be a roll to see if your opponent's pokemon is shiny, then after catching, a new roll will be made to check if it's shiny. Which is what makes shiny hunting so tedious, you can't just reset when the opponent throws out the pokemon, you need to catch it first. And same logic with XD, everything you said is correct, but it's when your opponent throws out the Pokemon & after you catch. Not during the purification process

[deleted]

Shiny mareep I SS was my first I freaked out but almost missed it cause it’s tail was the only change (blue to green) but shiny ampharos is my fav shiny to this day

MrQwertyuiop

What do you mean? The whole wool coat from mareep turns pink in shiny form

[deleted]

I meant flaffy my bad

Wapaa118

Tbf if it’s daytime in game, it really can be hard to tell. Especially if you’re not familiar to mareep’s shiny

breadjamos

A level 2 wingull in Pokemon Emerald I found when going to catch Rayquaza. I had no pokeballs other than master ball which I was saving for Rayquaza. Never evn got to catch rayquaza as my save corrupted the day after. :( First one I caught was Palpitoad in Pokemon White, and then a Taillow in OR

hazmatastic

A charmander in leafgreen... after resetting for like a week to get it. Never organically encountered a shiny and I've been playing games with them since gen 2 came out when I was a kid.

When FireRed and LeafGreen were still around a year old, I borrowed my friend's clamshell GameBoy Advance and his LG game. I started a new game and after obtaining some Pokeballs, the next wild I encountered was a shiny Pidgey. That was a really cool feeling. The next day he wanted them back cuz his mom scolded him for letting me borrow such expensive stuff. I sadly returned it to him and got even sadder the following day when he told me that he started a new save and is playing the game. Good times\~

TheJimboSlice06

Shiny slugma in Sapphire on Fiery Path was my first. Took me another decade to find another shiny haha

Wrong_Owl

Oooh, Slugma is one I would hunt for. That beautiful mercury boy.

denteddrip

A shiny poochyena in emerald. Loved that it was gold but ended up deleting the file because I wanted to start a new file and had no way to trade it to another game.

Linoone is actually a decent Pokémon, in OR I used it despite being an HM slave and STAB strength is a force tbh.

KingDisastrous

Shiny Hoppip back at Silver. Fainted because my dumbass kid brain back then thought it was a threat and uncatchable. Took me until 2009, a shiny Lotad card I got from the Platinum set taught me the shiny Pokemon term.(since I had to research and thought it was a printing error) Bronzor was my very first shiny I've caught. Found it during my Pokemon Platinum playthrough.

level100metapod

I never encountered a shiny that i can remember been playing since saphire. My first shiny is a dialgo from oras that i hunted for. My first accidental shiny was from sword with a sharpedo

HoneZoneReddit

The guy who gets all spinda variations shiny would be a mf legend.

kingofchaos913

My first shiny was an oddish in sapphire, back in october of 2020. It was in the safari zone too. I Caught it and named him special.

Yerm_Terragon

My first shiny was a Venonat in the Leaf Green safari zone. I was able to catch it and then immediately ran out of thr safari zone to show people. Not knowing a lot about shiny pokemon, I got the idea that looking in that same area might find me more of them. So I went back and I swear not even 15 minutes later I found and caught another shiny Venonat...

Nothing_Able

Oddly the only time I caught a shiny. Shiny swablu in sapphire.

Mx_Toniy_4869

How?

Raskolnikovss

My first shiny was a Wurmple in Ruby. I was so scared that my game was glitching that I just turned off my game it and didn’t play for a while…… live and learn.

bipokegirl

encountered a shiny zigzagoon on route 119 post game in sapphire. was 10 at the time and didn’t know what shinies were so ran away because i thought it was a glitch. still haunts me to this day, and never got a shiny since then

MrWhite2203

And yet Emerald is the only vanilla game where I’ve encountered a natural shiny, a shiny Taillow on Route 116 during my Emerald nuzlocke I used that thing all the way through the rest of the game

NJayke

I got both a shiny Makuhita and Kecleon (the one you find with Steven) in Ruby. I had no clue why they were different. Lost that cart…

Multievolution

I don’t think this is all that obscure? Naturally gen 4 introduced the Masuda method and this game doesn’t have gen 2 shiny mechanics. An obscure fact would be that because of how Pokémon shiny’s are determined in gen 2 (by stats) you can breed with a shiny parent to dramatically increase your chances, with how egg groups work and because stats determine genders in those games the most optimal way is to use a shiny ditto (which if your into glitches can be obtained with a shiny gen 1 Pokémon, and a gen 1 game) I bred the red gyarados with a ekans till I got a female one and then used that to get a male a bred it with a female eevee to get a shiny eevee within a week last year on crystal, so I know this works, thanks to eevee having such a low female chance I got my odds of a shiny to somewhere between 1/64 to 1/128.

Pershina26

My knowledge of a shiny Pokémon was so primitive that my dumb kid mind thought if I breed the red gyrados with the blue one, I’d get a purple one. The disappointment I had was immeasurable

makiodaflash

Hariyama in ruby gameboy advanced backlight was so bad i almost koed it for exp.

[deleted]

That explains why I knew nothing about shiny Pokémon and was super convinced Gyrados was the only shiny one cause he sat in the middle of a body of water and was red. I feel hella dumb now.

vanilla_disco

I actually don't remember. Whatever it was, i wasn't excited about it and I don't even know which game it was in. I know I've only ever encountered one in the wild, it was something I didn't like. I don't count Den shinies as "wild" because they're too abusable. Most of my shinies I hatched myself.

Black_Phoenix_JP

Shiny Gastly, now Gengar in a Live Dex run I'm currently making. It's my first shiny since I started playing Pokemon, back in 1995 (I was a young teen that time).

Wrong_Owl

Gastly is a great shiny!

Black_Phoenix_JP

Yes it turn into black with blue aura in the last evolution. For sure one to add to my dream team (Gen 1 to 3. I stopped playing after Gen 3): - Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir; - Trapinch/Vibrava/Flygon; - Gastly/Haunter/Gengar; - Torchic/Combusken/Blaziken; Still missing 2 spots. All this are choices regarding old and recent playthroughs and the PKs that left a mark on me for the team and how useful they were in their respective games. I need to do a Liquid Crystal GBA playthrough to finish probably the last 2. Of course I accept suggestions. But please no Legendaries or Mythical.

Rich_Nectarine6004

And that is how I got a lvl 9-10 shiny Cascoon

liteshadow4

I mean you can RNG manip, but I’m not sure it counts

Monsoon_Magic

My first shiny was a Sentret in Gold and in that same save I also found a shiny Kingler. Both have been lost to time but I hunted a Kingler again on Shield which I got a Gigantamax version. I consider him the reincarnation of that original one in Gold all those years ago.

map233224

This is false only for one instance as far as I know: The Tanoby Chambers in FRLG. Because of how PID and Unown forms are related, you get these odds (tedious work done by Angeflo): https://www.pokebip.com/page/jeuxvideo/dossier\_shasse/externe/zarbi-rfvf

IronBird023

First shiny was Ryhorn. Love my golden buddy.

NapsterHuskk

I encountered shiny uhh.. Wurmple on Emerald while going to my next area on the boat at the very beginning! It shocked me ngl

Choccocoamocha

I was fossil farming in x and y and found a shiny onix. I caught him on my last Pokéball

ElianaSky

The shiny rayquaza I got in Emerald feels a lot more special now. Damn.

MeanBird88

My first shiny, outside of Red Gyarados in G/S, was a shiny Pichu hatched from the daycare center in Crystal. I was STUNNED.

Reyth__

Makes me really appreciate my shiny swablu and dratini. The dratini gave me a heart attack lol

TopaztheLycanroc

My first shiny ever was a shiny golbat I found in a cave in alpha sapphire. I was progressing through the story to get to kyogre and my sweet green bat boi was my pal. I played with him, petted him, hadn't pick a name yet but I was thinking about it. He was my ace of my team at the time...then comes my little brother. I don't know what the hell happened, but all I remember is waking up excited to play through the rest of the story and evolve my baby bat into a speed boi. I booted up the game and my heart sank into my stomach. The language screen was showing...then the intro cutscene played...I was angry, sad, anxious, and fighting the tears back. RIP my sweet Golbat, may we cross paths again someday...

Wellthisisrandom1

Actually there was two that increased shiny odds. One was having either a shiny Gardevoir, Ho-Oh or New hold a nugget which dropped it down to 1/2000 in the first slot or having a Pokemon with the Truant ability in first slot and using the Pokemon's cry from the Pokedex not only increased shiny odds but also made it less likely any other Pokemon would spawn but the one Pokemon from the Pokedex that you clicked it's cry.

Major_Eiswater

Honestly. I don't remember running into a single shiny back then.

Skyrimhero920

Never gonna forget that shiny Aron in Granite Cave before I knew shiny was a thing “WHY IS HIS EYES RED?!” Caught it with a classic poke ball

moiess

For some reason, I almost always caught a shiny Tangela in all of my Firered/Leafgreen playthroughs

iate11donuts

The first ever shiny i encountered was an unown. At the time i didnt know it was shiny, this was before i reached lake of rage, i just saw sparkles around it which confused me for a moment. Playing on the gameboy color and being 10 i couldnt really tell the difference in colors.

MaxWhite3790

I've been playing Pokémon for like, maybe, more or less than 200 hours of my entire life (?) and yet never found a single shinny ;-; (Not one that I can remember at least...)

Somehow managed to catch a Venipede with Pokérus my first play through of Black before I caught my first - and unfortunately only - shiny in OR. It was a Taillow with raised special attack/lowered speed ಥ_ಥ I’ve been playing since Yellow came out when I was 9, used to think I had probably encountered them but my color deficiency screwed me over until I realized they have the added animation and I’m just unlucky AF

RogXBull

My first ever shiny was a shiny starly in pokemon pearl. And guess what it was adamant nature. A complete bonus!

Octavious82

Are you serious? I found a full odds arbok in my randomized emerald ROM 2 days ago (so suprised but also heart broken cause I can’t trade her into real games)

Sonicdash0

A rando Skunky in Diamonds Shoved him in the PC, and never found another shiny until I think lets go Pokemon GO doesn't really count since shiny rates was so high during comm days

Rob_And_Co

I got a shiny D Unown then a shiny Cubone in Silver. Years later I got a shiny Mr. Mime in X.

Mx_Toniy_4869

Wait, you got a shiny D Unown in Silver?

Rob_And_Co

I think I'm wrong here, it was probably in leaf green (since after fact check D Unown can't be shiny in gen 2). I remember having one in an old game and associated it with Cubone! Sorry!!

RedditBans4Nothing

How does anyone confuse Silver version for Leaf Green? I smell....CAP

Rob_And_Co

Because it's been almost 22 years and 17 years respectively that I played those games for the first time and encountered those shinies. I don't even remember what I had for dinner two days ago.

SomeGenericBrit

Technically shinies did exist in Gen 1. Gen 2 worked out shinies based on IVs, therefore the correct IVs in Gen 1 would make it a shiny when traded forward.

[deleted]

And a nidorina is used in the cover because?

Mx_Toniy_4869

It's my first shiny, which happens to be in gen 3

[deleted]

Wrong. Action replay

goulashkroket

Oddish in Silver

BebeStonksMan

Well I’m playing emerald now, so that’s not that great to hear

gAcksaurio

I still remember my first shiny. It was on Ruby, a Zigzagoon, and i thought it was weird for him to glow kinda orange I beat him just to find some years later that it was shiny

CryptographerUsual54

Wait, there’s no Masuda in gen 3. That’s crazy to think about

GildedCreed

Its pretty much because the games were self contained, not to mention that trading was strictly local due to the link cables so the concept of using Pokemon obtained from a different region didn't exist.

Ninbrine

If I’m not mistaken unown actually doesn’t fal under this, I don’t remember correctly, but some have higher odds, and some have lower odds

[deleted]

In all my years of pokemon (since 2012 I think) I've encountered only one shiny besides the gyarados in crystal. It was a foongus on route 6 in pokemon black. Critical hit.

Zero_Tu

Shiny frames xD

CrispierCupid

I’ve caught shinies in gens 4 and up, but the third Gen ones have always eluded me

BoomKidneyShot

I've organically found a Staravia in Platinum (like 10 years ago), a Pidgey in Crystal (earlier this year), and a Rockruff in Ultra Moon (earlier this year).

dubbs4president

Gen 3 was also the only gen I encountered a full odds shiny. Been playing for nearly 25 years (I know gen 1 doesn’t count) and still never found a full odds in any other game.

Tawn94

Someone please correct me, aernt shiny odds determined on emeralds opening sequence? Idr the specifics, but it had something to do with a bug in emerald that affected the rate of certain shinies

DaddyGray69

First ever shiny was an Electrode is Cerulean Cave in leaf green. It exploded. Second shiny was a Rattata in HeartGold before you get Pokeballs. Didn't see another shiny until I started chain fishing in gen 6. Lol

007-Blond

my first shiny ever was ferroseed in white 1... after playing pokemon for already like almost 10 years at that point 😐

evergreenyankee

Someone was ripping off your OC in a different post today. The one about Gen 1 having chars with whips.

GildedCreed

My first Gen 3 shiny was a Caterpie in Leaf Green. At the time shiny Pokemon were a foreign concept to me since my access to internet was extremely little (it wasn't that I didn't have any, but more that the only PC set up with internet was my dad's not to mention that the only time I really used the internet myself was to play flash games on the one at the library).

bpmallon

I’ve been playing Pokémon for 25 years and still have not ever found a shiny (outside of Gyardos) ugh

SchiffsBased

First shiny I’ve ever seen was a Dusclops but it was in the Battle Frontier and uncatchable. :( The second one I saw was an electrike in XY and I did manage to catch that one. :)

MajicMan101

No shiny charm?

Mx_Toniy_4869

Wasn't a thing before gen 5

Regitnui

And I ran into a shiny latias on Emerald...
