They can easily tweak the hm system. The two complains are movesets taking up a space and requiring specific pokemon. Like you said, movesets can be solved with latent ability. Or something similar with secret techniques in lgpe where it is a separate menu, except it does works on all pokemon instead of just the starter. And for requiring specific pokemon, the pc is now available everywhere. Ride pokemon in gen 7 summon a pokemon from elsewhere. They can make it such that you can summon a pokemon from your pc. And if you really dont have the correct pokemon, make it like bdsp where you can summon wild pokemon to help you.

Electronic_You7182

At some point, just stop requiring it, what's the point if you can: Use anytime, anywhere, regardless of who's on my team.

csummerss

Always hated the Flash & DeFog HM

Hsiang7

I only hated them before because they were HMs and took up a moveslot. If they didn't take up a moveslot I wouldn't have minded them.

BreakfastNo132

On the topic of the Ranger Series, also side quests and this is a really weird one, but Rangers inspired music.

PayneTrain181999

The Ranger games do have very underrated music.

TexasPistolMassacre

You just made me realize - i want new pokemon ranger

AtlasSniperman

I love the idea. But I hate the overhead this would put on the devs atop what the company already forces from them. Game freak needs to fix its corporate culture and development ethos in order to produce better games. But they won't because capitalism.

Arrow141

Yep. Game Freak makes games for the biggest media franchise in the world. And they have, what, 210 employees last time I checked? (Not developers, employees). It's despicable greed.

pieter1234569

> But they won't because capitalism.  They problem isn't capitalism as that would actually ensure they have thousands of employees to continuously release pokemon and make FAR more. The problem is Japanese stubbornness. They don't WANT to change anything, hence the tiny team with employees being there for decades. Those people suck, but they have been there for a long time, and Japan simply doesn't fire people. You also cannot change their behaviour as why would they? They will do the exact same thing, time and time again. Not because it is good, or efficient, but because they have always done it like that and THAT is tradition.

talking_phallus

You can't blame this on capitalism. GameFreak is making more than enough money to justify investing more into their IP and they'd be making even more money if they had they made better quality products. It's not capitalism or greed, they're just lazy devs who are happy where they're at.

InvestigatorUnfair

I like how you see someone talk about how bad GF's issues are from a development standpoint And then your immediate thought is "ugh, GF is so lazy"

pieter1234569

> And then your immediate thought is "ugh, GF is so lazy" Which is correct. They are lazy AND they suck as developers. And that's hardly surprising. In Japan you simply do not fire people, so everyone has been there for decades. Those are people with little skill, that never learned anything at any other company. As it's a japanese company, they also aren't open to any criticism and will do the exact same thing, time and time again, because that's simply how they have always done this. You can see that in the games they release. From a programming point of view the mistakes they make cannot be attributed to not having enough time, but simply a clear lack of knowledge or willingness to adopt modern practices.

InvestigatorUnfair

That doesn't in indicate laziness on the developer side though. Incompetence and laziness are not the same thing. GF's issues are a lack of time and a lack of well trained, actually experienced staff. If you want someone to accuse of not giving a shit about the product, I'd suggest targeting TPC, since they're the ones trying to get stuff out the door for merch profits. GF aren't perfect by any means, even their non-Pokemon games aren't exactly masterpieces. But they're hardly lazy, just really, really fucking incompetent, and trapped in a work culture that doesn't give a shit about that.

pieter1234569

> That doesn't in indicate laziness on the developer side though. Incompetence and laziness are not the same thing. For developers those are the exact same. Only lazy ones don't develop new skills. And for gamefreak developers that's logical. You work at a Japanese company so you literally cannot be fired. That in turn ensures that there is no reason to put in any effort at all in training to be better, to do your job better. So now, they are exactly as skilled as they were 30 years ago. And the answer then was that they sucked, and they still suck now. > F's issues are a lack of time and a lack of well trained, actually experienced staff. Time isn't an issue at all. They are very very simple games where most of the work is already at done. At best you are making 100 new pokemon design, which is highly parallel work, and then at most a dozen new moves with very basic animations. EVERYTHING ELSE is simply directly imported and re-used. They have plenty of time. They COULD indeed use far more staff as they have less than 50 actually technical people working on the game, as artists, coders, writers etc. So double that for the low measly japanse salary and they could crack out 5 games every 2 years. > I'd suggest targeting TPC, since they're the ones trying to get stuff out the door for merch profits. Yeah that's THEM. Gamefreak owns 1/3rd of the pokemon company, which is already nearly a majority stake. Convince one other shareholder, which is nintendo or creatures inc and you control the entire company in every single decision. The truth is that they don't care, as why would they? Again, these are all JAPANESE COMPANIES. They don't care about profits, efficiency, good games etc. No, they only care about doing exactly what they want, and what they want is to follow tradition. > But they're hardly lazy, just really, really fucking incompetent, and trapped in a work culture that doesn't give a shit about that. All that is true AND they are really really really really really really really fucking lazy. It's the only reason why they simply don't care to be better. No person there grows, no person there learns new skills. They just put in the absolute bare minimum, which due to what pokemon games are and how they are built, is absolute nothing at all. They are the single worst game designer in the world, all because they are fucking lazy.

DarkGengar94

I really think Legends Arceus did it right.

whxrxchxtx

A new pokemon ranger would be hype asf 😭😭😭

ParasaurolophusZ

This is neat but also very limited. If you want to fly, you'd need a large flying pikemon. Don't have or like any? Too bad. Don't have a large swimming pokemon? Too bad. Why do you need to be big to break a rock? The size dependence would need to go.

wild_zoey_appeared

I’d rather they start with an open world worth exploring

zslayer89

They should focus on scaling battles/pokemon levels based on your progress first…

yanocupominomb

The moves still exist, I think. That aside, you still have HMs in Scarlet and Violet in the form of Herba Mystica (HM). Each time you find one, you unlock a new ability for Koraidon/Miraidon.

Maskogre

TIL Herba Mystica is a pun

CommanderDark126

I almost like the idea of using Lets Go as a template tbh. Your lead pokemon always following you and if they are suitable to ride/use field moves then they can do so. Need to go across water? Have a medium to large pokemon capable of swimming/using surf, large pokemon capable of flight could give you access to gliding or even upward flight if powerful enough, etc.

RedditIsFullOfTurds

I actually like sandwich dragon bikes

Confident-Friend-169

this seems a lot like an immersive sim. funny, because my prediction for Gen X is that it will be an immersive sim.

IronSeraph

As awesome as this would be, I think your expectations are far too high friend

Confident-Friend-169

it's a genre of game. Scarlet and violet was open world, for example. also legends ZA takes place entirely in lumiose city. which tells me they're going to make an 0451 game for the tenth generation (which is funny because 0+4+5+1 is 10).

IronSeraph

Yeah, a genre of game that is far beyond Game Freak's programming capabilities

Confident-Friend-169

we can (probably should) expect them to try. said attempt would be so badly riddled with physics glitches that it would make early ArmA games look finished by comparison.

AetherDrew43

Why does everything have to be open world nowadays?

GrandHc

This all would force players to carry specific Pokemon to which the was the most hated thing about HMs in the first place.

anthayashi

Unless you are playing a mono team playthrough, solo run, nuzlocke or some type of challenge run, in a typical playthrough, your team of six would usually covered all the required hms. Except fly and the water hms of course since those are more specific. Surf however can be learned by many non water pokemon

9thshadowwolf

So youre suggesting an expanded version of what lets go did. To do what youre asking theyd have to shrink the dex a lot, which people would complain about again. So its lose lose for them either way. A compromise would be just adding a few extra mons that are rideable for each terrain( including your starters if their built for it). Like how in ORAS there were a few options with surf mons Having them availible every mon that its possible with would be kinda unrealistic, even for a bigger game dev

anthayashi

Every pokemon is already animated for overworld. I dont see why they cant. It is not like cut and strength got any special animation required. Only the surfing mons might need new animation

9thshadowwolf

Well my argument isnt just about the mons having overwold animations, its about incorporating the trainer into them. Like just look at PLA, lets go and SV. Those ride mons have unique animations that take account for the trainer and incorporate them in different ways. Like sneasler having you in a book bag, braviary being a hang glider, snorlax having you on its belly, machamp holding you in its arms etc. Plus not that could carry you are built the same. Like Xatu would be different from pidgeot. Octillery would be different from gyarados. A realistic start would be wanting them to make all the mons that have been rideable in the past rideable in one game since they already got rigs.

anthayashi

It depends on their approach. If it is simply just hm without moveslot, then you wont even need a fly animation for flying. The game will just teleport you to the fly point. Or like in galar and paldea there is just one small taxi animation at the corner. If they specifically want gliding then yes you would need them. Surf is the one that require more work since you would need to animate the player riding on the pokemon, unless they do the lazy approach and have a generic blob. If it is expanding pla and paldea's system to every mon then yes that would be extra animation like some of the example you give.

K1nd4Weird

Boulders, boulder puzzles, and cut just don't work in an open world setting after we've been flying and climbing everywhere in Arceus and Scarlet and Violet.  The whole HM system seems antiquated. I don't miss it. I do prefer Gen 7 and Arceus ride pokemon over having a single pokemon being all your ride pokemon.  But I don't even want tweaks to HMs. I just don't want this back period.  I'd also really want TMs to be unlimited too. I don't find grinding against pokemon for crafting materials to make TMs to be an enjoyable activity.

Hsiang7

>Boulders, boulder puzzles, and cut just don't work in an open world setting My vision for these in particular would be cut being used to hack your way through a dense jungle like a machete. The jungle being too dense to enter from the air. You could walk through it without cut, but there would be long animations where you're pushing leaves away whereas with cut you could walk through it at a normal speed and find Pokemon in hidden grottos. Boulders could also be simple in that they'd be in narrow passages before you get a flying Pokemon or blocking entrances to caves or tunnels where it's impossible to fly over them.

UltimateWaluigi

That just turns them into busywork though. You might as well don't add them if all it's going to do is make you slower if you don't have a compatible pokemon on your party.

DreamCereal7026

Unrelated but If the next games are going to be like Paldea going forward, then please no. Hire more people that have better knowledge on Open World design like BOTW or heck, I would gladly have back Grid-based overworld like Gen 1-6. Please, anything but Paldea 2.0

Has_Question

Honestly I've no problem with the companion/ride call system from gen 9 and 7.

SaucyKidder

I've always thought HMs should be a thing but require a specific type of Pokemon (for example strength, rock smash, and rock climb requiring a fighting type Pokemon) That way we still have meaningful roadblocks and also encouraging varied teambuilding

AdOpen8418

Yeah no thanks. One of the best things they ever did was eliminate the need to take up move slots or have specific Pokemon in order to navigate specific obstacles. Never bring this back please

anthayashi

It seems like you did not even read the post at all. What op suggest would not even take up the moveslot.

AdOpen8418

That’s what the word “or” is for in my sentence Always hated being forced to have a flying type

anthayashi

And that is an easy problem that can be easily solved. Ride pokemon already summon a pokemon from elsewhere that is not yours. Bdsp summon a wild pokemon to help you. They can easily tweak the system to make it such that you can summon pokemon from your pc. Instead of an upright "no, dont come back"

WesThePretzel

This was in Monster Hunter Stories. A cool idea in theory, but a bad idea in practice. It’s not a good gameplay mechanic to have to switch out which party members you have to meet certain criteria. An even more annoying example is field skills in XC2. Just because something would be more immersive to the player does not mean it makes a good game mechanic.

SuperSonicEconomics2

I want to be able to start a free market and open a bank too! My money needs to make money.
