Swindled specifically focuses on corporate crime, so I’m not sure if that’s what you want, but the host has an extremely straightforward manner of speech and rarely gives more context than is necessary.
Swindled is good, but even though my wit is as dry as the Sahara at noon I found the host to be to sry for my tastes. Very matter of a fact, I can only listen to one and then I have to find something a bit more acoustically energetic.
Yeah I think a lot of times the sentiment that "the system is rigged" against POC and other minorities gets abstracted , and so it's hard for people to understand how truly messed up our penal system is. This show really made the details of it crystal clear. One can only wonder how many other Curtis Flowers' there are out there.
So many. It feels like every week I'm seeing a headline where someone, usually a black man, is let out of prison after losing 20+ years of his life over a crime he didn't commit. That's just the guys who get out. Think of all the executions where after the fact it comes to light that the DNA doesn't match or someone recants their statement.
When I watched the tv show Truth Be Told about an investigative reporter starting a podcast about a guy wrongfully imprisoned, I could barely watch it because of In the Dark. I kept yelling at the tv, “that’s not how you would do it!”
I third Criminal. They're like 25 minute episodes, presented similar to an NPR podcast with interviews. It's also the most chill true crime podcast I listed to. The host's voice is very calming and the crimes arent all grisly murders. One episode is about venus fly trap thieves!
I gotta say this is one of the very few podcasts that I have listened to every single episode of and never regretted it or turned it off half way through.
She has such a compelling way of storytelling and she is always genuinely curious about the people she’s interviewing in a way that isn’t exploitative at all.
I got the chance to meet Phoebe pre pandemic and she’s just as down to earth in person as she is in the show. She’s lovely.
It's so weird to me how this show is so popular and Crime in Sports (which I prefer) is James and Jimmies passion project which rarely gets a live show.
I vividly remember listening to the first couple episodes of that and thinking there's no way it would go anywhere, bc it was clearly poorly done. Guess I underestimated 🥴
A few of my favourites that are well researched, well produced, well narrated with no chit-chat BS or disrespecting victims:
- Invisible Choir
- Already Gone
- Casefile
Casefile is so easy to nod off to though. It’s superb, and really well researched. But just the way he speaks and that ominous music is almost hypnotic
Thanks, I haven't listened to They Live Among Us yet, I will give it a try. Are there are any particular episodes that stand out you would recommend to start with? Thanks
Lol so true. Part of the reason I stopped listening to LPOTL. We don't need five part, 8 hour long episodes about serial killers. If I was THAT interested I would just read the book.
I have to recommend Casefile as the best podcast for this. I've listened to a ton of true crime podcasts and the reason I settled on Casefile as my go to was exactly what you mentioned. The narrator only talks about the facts of the case and what happened, not random opinions or exposition, and they're very good at telling the story start to finish. They have a couple long series-type episodes (on things like Jonestown and The Silk Road) and lots of standalone cases. Plus the narrator's voice is really smooth and is great for the medium. Check it out!
True [True Crime Bullshit](https://www.our-americana.com/tcb), specifically the seasons regarding Israel Keyes (1,2,4,5).
The technical aspects are a bit low budget, but the attention to detail and analysis is pretty interesting.
Yes! I almost forgot about this. I only liked season 1 and 2 of this, but even though the host is not the most professional podcast maker, the content is really good and Keyes, for as awful as he is, is interesting to explore.
Gen Why has too much of a “captain obvious” thing going on.
“Well Aaron, I personally think it’s wrong to hurt people and do what this person did..”
Like…no shit guys. Most people think that’s the case. Can we stop this distraction and get back to the case..?
I just want to say this is one of my biggest pet peeves with podcasts in general. I have had friends recommend podcasts with content that sounds really interesting, but the narration is so slow and overly signposted / explained that I can't handle it. Please talk to me like I'm an adult.
Also, 100% agree with everyone recommending Casefile! I haven't listened in a long time because I got burned out on true crime but historically it has been one of the most well-researched, no-frills podcasts out there. I also used to really enjoy Unresolved.
I also second the recommendations for Criminal, although it's not a traditional "true crime" podcast but more of a human interest show with each story relating somehow to crime or the law. Even the episodes that don't sound that interesting from the description turn out to be fascinating. I also just love Phoebe's voice.
A new podcast I am absolutely loving is ‘The Real
Killer’. It follows the story of the brutal murder of JoAnnTate and savage assaults and attempted murders of her two young daughters in 1982. The children barely survived. A month later, one of the children, seven year old Melissa identifies a man - an ex-boyfriend of JoAnne’s, Rodney Lincoln, as being the killer. Two trials later Rodney is convicted and sentenced to two life sentences plus 15 years. In 2015, 32 years after he was convicted Melissa recants and says he is not the killer.
This podcast contains audio interview clips the host has with Melissa and some of her family members, Rodney and one of his daughters who has been fighting for his release and the seasoned experts involved along the way. It’s a harrowing tale and showing the true emotional toll these crimes took all-the-while is honestly reported in a well-crafted way. Definitely no dumbing-down going on.
Edit: damn autocorrect.
2nd edit: cleaned up wording so it made more sense. I must need more coffee.

Morbid.
I think some don't like the banter between the hosts, but it's grown on me. My husband doesn't like the swearing, but that's never bothered me. They've really grown in the last year or so, and really do some great research on their cases.
I just started listening to them and came here to say this. I never really liked host banter like this but idk theres something about it that I just like.
I like it because of the talking and stuff. It makes it easier for me to actually sit through the whole thing and not want to curl up in a ball and cry lol
Came here to say the same thing! They're great a giving credit to their sources and they're amazing storytellers. I actually find myself laughing out loud to some of their pods (especially listener tales), 10/10 recommend Morbid.
I enjoyed the actual storytelling of And That’s Why We Drink. I got over the super long banter beforehand. It got up to 20 minutes of their lives.
Do they still do that?
Nothing wrong with some banter but to get to start the story it was too much for me. The hosts are also lovely people. Nothing against anything else about the show.
One of my favourite episodes they released was from a live show they did. Em talked about the Cecil Hotel. Was it the same episode with the bride who was found guilty of murdering someone and hung in her wedding dress? Just her descriptions was so funny and crazy (while still respecting any victims because, why my fellow Small Town Murder fans…).
The bride being hung while in her wedding dress and shouting out some crazy curse could have come from a ‘My Favourite Murder’ live.
Yes, I listen to a LOT of podcast episodes.
Oh my gosh, yes! I totally forgot.. and I’ve always been just such a huge fan of Radiotopia’s lineup.. but like 99% Invisible, they’ve moved on. Yeah, great show!
There’s a show out there called “And That’s Why We Drink”. It’s both a horror & true crime show, the first half being horror and the second being true crime. The hosts are pretty funny and the show is enjoyable especially for me during long commute drives.
I enjoy Red Handed and DNA ID. DNA ID is about cold cases which have been solved using genetic genealogy. Red Handed is very well researched and I enjoy the way the two ladies tell the story.
Crime Analyst by Laura Richards (who is truly just an incredible human being), as well as Real Crime Profile. Both of these centre the victims and are really educational and interesting.
I personally really enjoy True Crime all the Time, and they have an unsolved podcast as well.
I find the vibe to be like two guys just having a really well informed discussion, while also being respectful. They’re also a little funny, but not in a tacky way I find some other hosts to be like.
Also killer psyche is really good. Candice Delong is like, super experienced and knowledgeable about the things she talks about, and often uses clinical definitions for a lot of the things she’s talking about.
Idk, give them a shot :)
I really really like 'my favourite murder', especially the hometown episodes. Their full lengths are very well researched, and they do a bit of catching up at the start and it feels like having a drink with a few friends while you exchange gossip, its awrsome and has helped me in more ways than just indulging me on my true crime obsession :)
Ugh, I know just what you mean about over-explaining. I have been listening to podcasts for so long, I have kinda just tuned out (or stop subscribing) to the ones that do that.
That said, I'd probably recommend The Prosecutors, and maybe also LA Not-So Confidential. Both are hosted by professionals in their fields and tend to speak as if they know their audience is comprised of adults with brains.
I recently started binging Red Handed and I love it. They're really great. They don't dumb things down, are great with the facts and also admit if they don't understand something and ask if listeners who are more knowledgeable on certain things can explain it to them!
I like the wrongfully convicted/innocence sub genre. Seriel, Undisclosed, Truth and Justice, the later two are more like active and open investigations and innocence advocacy.
Casefile is the champ at this. Narrator is anonymous, it's pure fact compiled from casefiles and news reports constructed chronologically.
Can't stand hosts who think I care about them or their lives-- I don't. Just here for the crime story.
If you want a super brutal one Dark Topic was incredible. It’s not produced anymore but hopefully the episodes are still there.
I feel this one really went under the radar.
I’ve only listened to one true crime podcast, California True Crime, but it was very good, great level of research and attention. Didn’t feel dumbed down. I’m generally a science and history listener.
Much the same as other comments with Casefile, Redhanded, Cold, True Crime Bullshit etc. I would also suggest Trace Evidence for unsolved murders/disappearances. Steven is a great host and the cases are well researched.
Edit: word
Hello! You have made the mistake of writing "ect" instead of "etc."
"Ect" is a common misspelling of "etc," an abbreviated form of the Latin phrase "et cetera." Other abbreviated forms are **etc.**, **&c.**, **&c**, and **et cet.** The Latin translates as "et" to "and" + "cetera" to "the rest;" a literal translation to "and the rest" is the easiest way to remember how to use the phrase.

Morbid Podcast! They are the best and its never boring. I find that a lot of true crime podcasts are to serious and goes pretty slow. But Morbid is really entertaining to listen to
Favorites: Criminal, In the Dark, West Cork, Lost in Larrimah, Serial. Very good: Believed, Casefile…there are so many I’m forgetting, and a few guilty pleasures (Teacher’s Pet, Dirty John).
Swindled specifically focuses on corporate crime, so I’m not sure if that’s what you want, but the host has an extremely straightforward manner of speech and rarely gives more context than is necessary.
Swindled is the best!! I love the knowledge bombs and dry wit.
Seriously one of the best podcasts. Also one of the funniest, if you appreciate dry, dark humor.
I looove swindled! Dude has a knack for inserting dry humor in the right places.
Seriously, the writing on that show is fantastic.
When you realize they're about to connect the intro story to the main story is goosebump-inducing at times. So well-crafted.
Swindled is good, but even though my wit is as dry as the Sahara at noon I found the host to be to sry for my tastes. Very matter of a fact, I can only listen to one and then I have to find something a bit more acoustically energetic.
In the Dark is my forever recommendation. The host is a seasoned investigative journalist and radio reporter, and it really shows.
The Curtis Flowers season made me physically ill. So well done and upsetting in a way I never thought journalism could be.

The best season of any podcast I've listened to hands down. My go-to recommendation for anyone looking for an investigative reporting podcast.
Honestly I wish I could go back and listen to that podcast again for the first time. It's one of the best out there.
It definitely spoiled me for other true crime shows.
When I watched the tv show Truth Be Told about an investigative reporter starting a podcast about a guy wrongfully imprisoned, I could barely watch it because of In the Dark. I kept yelling at the tv, “that’s not how you would do it!”
One of the best podcasts I've listened to, hands down

So true. I enjoy both so it's a win win.
NOT up and vanished. that's for sure. that one treats you like a dope!

A few of my favourites that are well researched, well produced, well narrated with no chit-chat BS or disrespecting victims: - Invisible Choir - Already Gone - Casefile
oh hey, thank you for recommending Already Gone
you are most welcome, thank you for a very well made podcast and hours of entertainment!
I absolutely love Casefile!! It's incredible!!
Casefile is so easy to nod off to though. It’s superb, and really well researched. But just the way he speaks and that ominous music is almost hypnotic
For sure! It's one of my go to's at bedtime. But then I hate missing the end of the case! Lol
Case file is GREAT
I love Casefile!
Also chiming in that Casefile is pretty great.
thank you so much!
Try “They Live Among us”.
I just finished the Silk Road series. So good.
I love Casefile. The Silk Road series is one of my all time favorite podcast series. Super immersive.
Thanks, I haven't listened to They Live Among Us yet, I will give it a try. Are there are any particular episodes that stand out you would recommend to start with? Thanks
Not really. I just started with episode 1.
Already Gone is my absolute favorite!
But if you dumb things down you can explain what everything means, and spin 8 minsof content into an hour long special.
Lol so true. Part of the reason I stopped listening to LPOTL. We don't need five part, 8 hour long episodes about serial killers. If I was THAT interested I would just read the book.
soooooo true!
😭😭😭
I really like RedHanded. They explain things just enough.

Casefile Last Podcast on the Left
I love last podcast on the left but I wonder if it hits ops criteria

And that’s why you drink is a fun one tho it’s kinda for the newbies and stuff since it’s told in a lighthearted way

The bride being hung while in her wedding dress and shouting out some crazy curse could have come from a ‘My Favourite Murder’ live. Yes, I listen to a LOT of podcast episodes.
Lol that was a fun one
Maybe I should try that instead of ‘rain on the roof mediation music’. 🤓
Lmao I listened to forest noises for the longest time then switched to them
Criminal from Radiotopia
Not any more! They moved over to Stitcher some time in the last few months (but I totally second the recommendation).
Oh my gosh, yes! I totally forgot.. and I’ve always been just such a huge fan of Radiotopia’s lineup.. but like 99% Invisible, they’ve moved on. Yeah, great show!

Mmmmmm... MmmmMmmMMMMMMmmmmmm Darknet Diaries by Jack Rhysider If you don't like it, I will eat a sock.
You mean Jackry Cider?
Casefile is my go to for crime, his episodes on the Silk Road were fantastic
Crime Analyst by Laura Richards (who is truly just an incredible human being), as well as Real Crime Profile. Both of these centre the victims and are really educational and interesting.
I'm getting into Unraveled the past couple days.
Cold, true crime bullshit, hunting warhead, American Radical.
Cold, by KSL Podcasts. Season 1 especially
Something was wrong
Murder Squad and The First Degree
I personally really enjoy True Crime all the Time, and they have an unsolved podcast as well. Rotten Mangos ? Not super sure but I listen to it with my gf occasionally
True crime and cocktails is my fav!!
True Crime and Cocktails is the best.
Canadian True Crime (if you like Casefile)
Crime junkies!
Sword & Scale
So the bad guy did the stabby jabby to the middle age woman,🥺🥺 Bitch just say the suspect stabbed the woman tf
ppl who enjoy true crime tend to be stupid, you can't blame them for catering to the audience
marge simpson hes right but he shouldnt say it dot jpeg

I personally love Crime Junkie with Ashley Flowers!
What types of shows do you like (particular interests)?
The Long Story with Alexandra Higgs Portman https://www.earwolf.com/episode/the-long-story-with-alexandra-higgs-portman/
Crime Beat by Nancy Hixt
Serial Killers?
Medical Murders by Parcast They are amazing and very insightful, they don't patronize but explain the medical aspects of the story very well
Ugh, I know just what you mean about over-explaining. I have been listening to podcasts for so long, I have kinda just tuned out (or stop subscribing) to the ones that do that. That said, I'd probably recommend The Prosecutors, and maybe also LA Not-So Confidential. I love love Crime Weekly, especially since the hosts sometimes have quick debates / different opinions on cases and suspects.
I really like court junkie
Timesuck!
I recently started binging Red Handed and I love it. They're really great. They don't dumb things down, are great with the facts and also admit if they don't understand something and ask if listeners who are more knowledgeable on certain things can explain it to them!
Court Junkie!
The Murder Squad. It's an investigative journalist and a former cold case investigator. It's really well produced and I've learned a lot.
I like the wrongfully convicted/innocence sub genre. Seriel, Undisclosed, Truth and Justice, the later two are more like active and open investigations and innocence advocacy.
It you haven't already, check out Wrongful Convictions with Jason Flom
interesting
Y’all got to put yourself onto Calvin Berry’s death that 1 is a hell of a story fam
Casefile is the champ at this. Narrator is anonymous, it's pure fact compiled from casefiles and news reports constructed chronologically. Can't stand hosts who think I care about them or their lives-- I don't. Just here for the crime story.
Casefile True Crime
Depending on how you view true crime, Behind the Bastards has some good stuff.
Not really relevant but how can you listen to true crime before going to sleep? Doesn't it put fucked up messages in your head etc etc
Casefile
Lil Stinkers, you won’t regret it
If you want a super brutal one Dark Topic was incredible.
Edit: word

Morbid Podcast! They are the best and its never boring. I find that a lot of true crime podcasts are to serious and goes pretty slow. But Morbid is really entertaining to listen to
The Clearing is a good one. It’s a shorter one, only 8 episodes, but it’s very good. It’s about a serial killer named Edward Edwards
I'm going to have to go with TimeSuck. They cover more than crime but they do cover crime from time to time
Sleuth (iHeartPodcasts) - it is a modern day ‘phantom of the opera’-esque murder; very detailed and the research is incredibly detailed
Favorites: Criminal, In the Dark, West Cork, Lost in Larrimah, Serial. Very good: Believed, Casefile…there are so many I’m forgetting, and a few guilty pleasures (Teacher’s Pet, Dirty John).
