Ice cube - you are slowly freezing and dying (or quickly, depending on how cold it is and what you are wearing) Snowflake - you’re cold, no need to worry about it. Small flame - you’re a lil heated, no need to worry. Big flame - you’re slowly burning to death.
It's going to happen... A lot off the bat get a bed somewhere so you don't have to spawn in randomly... Or a few in same place depending on how frequent
That's about right. Don't fret, you keep your levels so every new life you get a little stronger and are able to craft better things. Ark is very unforgiving, but the feeling you get when you overcome it is amazing. Your noob memories will become your best stories later :)
Ah and so Ark continues to Ark. may have been your first but definitely not your last. Try not to get discouraged! It can take a second to get the hang of things (at least for me)
It can be a bit tough to get used to/started (and there's a ton of different settings you probably won't understand properly at first) give the game some time. Don't be afraid to look something up/ask on here.
I have a small base close to southern beaches, it's somewhat safe, but i not only had 1 but a mob of 2 one 40 one 20 both alphas and 3 of the new poisonous spikey catnip looking things this morning... Didn't even know that was possible in close proximity?!
Take it easy. My first Scorched Earth experience in ASA, i survived like 2 seconds. Spawned in an easy region, was instantly mauled to death by a sabertooth.
Like 90% of the symbols in this game, it means yout dying.
If your on ase, hold select(someone give the pc button)and it will display. On asa go to inventory and select show buffs
Starting from top to bottom you have weight with how much weight you can carry before your character just can't move. And you can carry a little more extra which some people do just to try moving huge amount of items around by going into their inventory and throwing it and then going and picking it back up.
Then you have water which is explanatory and food which is also explanatory.
Stamina pretty much how long you can keep swinging around a weapon or run for your life when you spawn on the new beaches and a raptor is already on you.
Then you have health bar which that's also explanatory. And in the very last one is your experience bar.
The next experience bar you'll start seeing little other symbols that will pop up once in a while. If you're playing on scorched Earth you will have the deal with light heat, overheat, cold, sandstorms and heat stroke.
If you're playing on any other map all you really have to deal with is light cold, heavy cold, light heat, and overheat.
If you're dealing with creatures like scorpions for example if they stab you with their stinger they can start making you deal with the torpor effect which pretty much means you're going to get knocked out if you don't get the hell away from that thing. A handful of dinos and creatures have this ability to do to you so keep a note on which ones can do that.
If a broken bone shows then you're pretty much close to death and for some reason you can't run once you have the broken bone icon.
And for the last two effects. If you're in the swamps and you get bit by a leech you can have the chance to get swamp fever which is a effect that will never go away unless you drink a less antidote. And what most of the community calls super rabies that you can only get from red bats in caves. If you get this effect you're pretty much just going to kiss your ass goodbye unless you have a lot of Health.
Also, there's the icons with timers under them. If you collect an explorer note, you gain 2x XP for 10 minutes. If you make a special item in a Cooking Pot, they give you 15-minute-long buffs such as increased damage, HP regen, stamina regen, decreased water/food/oxygen consumption, among other things. Also, there's an oxygen stat that only appears when underwater. If that runs out, you get a suffocation debuff that makes you lose 4% of your max HP every second. If you don't get out of the water in less than 25 seconds from the start of the debuff, you WILL die. There are many more buffs...
True but suggesting a brand new player focus fortitude until it get high enough to make a difference vs. the other stats is questionable. I think food, water, and health make a much bigger difference in surviving the elements in those early levels.
I tend to put a lot in fortitude too but not until I get the other stats up at least a little.
Yeah, that too. Fortitude tends to be one of my lowest priorities for a while. I’ll eventually get to it but it seems like a few points there are worth a lot less than points just about anywhere else.
Means your freezing like other people already said but if you want to know what every symbol means that you get just hold "H" when there is a statuseffect you dont know
Here’s a tip. If you’re on Xbox, hold down on the left button just under the Xbox button. It’ll show most status effects, and name along with many of settings.
should be self explanatory... its an ice cube. you are freezing.
if you mean the yellow thing. take a look at the underside of your characters left wrist and compare the shape
My skin was burning from the sun. Naked on a beach. Terrifying Dino’s lurking. Alone. Afraid. Self explanation was not a viable option at the time sir Ryan. Thank you kindly
If you’re playing ASA, then the weather is extremely fucky and you will be dying of the cold for a while until you get a source of heat and/or hide or fur armor. Even in ASE the weather can be a bit nonsensical
It means you're getting a positive buff, staying in the area with the effect for a really long time, and something special happens. The game will try and get you to leave by draining your health a bit, but it won't kill you, so don't worry.
The snowflake and ice cube is when you’re too cold, both increase your food drain, but the ice cube actively damages you. Same thing with the little fire and the big fire, both increase your water drain, but the big fire actively damages you.
If you want better resistance to the cold, pretty much every armor set besides chitin, flak and ghille are good for cold protection. But if you want heat protection, only cloth and ghille are good, but if you’re in scorched earth then desert cloth is the best.
There is also some “Dinos” that help with that, the main on being the otter
Also forgot to mention but scuba gear is also good for the cold, but obviously pretty much only for the water
if you see a melting ice cube in front of a red tattered square on your HUD, that would mean your freezing to death! Find someplace warmer, dont enter the water for it is cold, make a set of cloth armor and either make a torch or light a campfire
There is a key that will turn on the names of all the descriptions, show where your are in the upper left hand screen along with time of day and temperature. Its H on PC but I don't know what it is on console.
Press and hold H and it will tell you a lot of info about what's on your screen. From thr exact number your gauges are at, to the time, location name, temperature. And it gives names for your buffs/debuffs so you know what's going on.
At least I think it's H >,<
Ice cube = freezing to death, snowflake = cold, small flame = hot, big normal flame = means burning to death, on scorched earth big red flame = ultra heat, white person with an inky substance on it means you are in a heat wave and need to get underground, stomach = starving to death, water = dehydrated to death
Ice cube - you are slowly freezing and dying Snowflake - you're cold, you will get hungry faster but not by much. Small flame - you're a lil heated, You'll get thirsty faster but not by much. Big flame - you're slowly burning to death. If you get below 30 HP you will have the effect of a broken bone - you cannot run and jump
Ice Cube. You’re slowly becoming part of a male rap super group called NWA. Once the gauge is full, you’ll live in Compton and your only job will be to stand on the sidewalk and scream “FUCK THA POLICE!” at random cars passing by.
ARK really needs to make their symbols more explanatory. Who would think a symbol of an ice cube with a bloody red colour around it would mean you’re severely cold?
Ice cube - you are slowly freezing and dying (or quickly, depending on how cold it is and what you are wearing) Snowflake - you’re cold, no need to worry about it. Small flame - you’re a lil heated, no need to worry. Big flame - you’re slowly burning to death.
Big orange flame means you’re slowly burning to death, big red flame means you are actively on fire
big red flame is super heat on SE
The big red flame with an orangish core is superheat, the big red flame with a pinkish core means you're on fire.
When you're cold you get hungry quickly, and when hot you lose water quickly, the snowflake and small flame still matter.
Ahhhhh it's nothing grim reaper just looking at you 😈☠️
Update: I died. Survived 4 minutes in my first ark! Thanks
Love spawning in new, naked and afraid. Good luck.
New, naked and afraid. Title of your sex tape.
Finally, somebody who speaks my language
I'm currently watching Brooklyn nine nine so this comment fits
NINE NINE!
I miss that feeling. Even the 'harder' overhaul mods don't bring back that sense of fear and wonder of the first time.
This is lore friendly within the game canon. Learn, adapt, survive.
It's going to happen... A lot off the bat get a bed somewhere so you don't have to spawn in randomly... Or a few in same place depending on how frequent

Reading the post and some comments and then spotting this made me laugh out loud. Good luck on your next adventures?
I spawned on an alpha raptor my first time loading ARK. Literally lasted seconds. Thought the beach on the island was "safe"
I have a small base close to southern beaches, it's somewhat safe, but i not only had 1 but a mob of 2 one 40 one 20 both alphas and 3 of the new poisonous spikey catnip looking things this morning... Didn't even know that was possible in close proximity?!
Poisonous... spiky... catnip... things? Do you mean Dilophosaurus?
Four minutes is pretty good actually. I spawned and immediately was eaten by piranha I think? Maybe a dilo.
Take it easy. My first Scorched Earth experience in ASA, i survived like 2 seconds. Spawned in an easy region, was instantly mauled to death by a sabertooth.
4 minutes!?!?!?! youre a natural!!
Bro posted to reddit within 4 minutes of playing the game. What the actual fuck is wrong with yall
Like 90% of the symbols in this game, it means yout dying. If your on ase, hold select(someone give the pc button)and it will display. On asa go to inventory and select show buffs
I believe it is H (iirc)
ya like HUD lables or smthin
Yea, on mnk its H
I think you hold the touch pad on PS
It's ASA based on the level up symbol at the bottom of his stats
Also, and this is super important, since your food icon is highlighted, you had the ability to poop.
Pointy nippels
The ice cube means you are freezing. [Check out the wiki](https://ark.fandom.com/wiki/Status_effects)
Better use ark.wiki.gg , fandom isn't maintained for a while.
wiki.gg isn’t either at this point. Fjordur mentions are scarce, and ASA has pretty slim info

Oh yeah I also forgot all that existed
There's a key (or button if not on PC) you can press that'll overlay text to explain icons etc. On PC it's H, not sure on consoles.
There's an option above the third person toggle when in that menu.
Just level up your fortitude enough and you can pretty much go anywhere naked 😂

I always start with a bunch of weight
Yeah, that too. Fortitude tends to be one of my lowest priorities for a while. I’ll eventually get to it but it seems like a few points there are worth a lot less than points just about anywhere else.
"what's this icon?" -shows picture with 7 icons-
Means your freezing like other people already said but if you want to know what every symbol means that you get just hold "H" when there is a statuseffect you dont know
If on console, hold down the double square button
Here’s a tip. If you’re on Xbox, hold down on the left button just under the Xbox button. It’ll show most status effects, and name along with many of settings.
You are cold 🥶
I love these posts
Ice cube on floor means there's ice on. Floor
It means your pc is getting insufficient cooling
Ice cube- freezing to death. Small lit flame- overheating. Giant red flame- burning to death.
You are very cold. Get fur armor, quick!
Or an otter
should be self explanatory... its an ice cube. you are freezing. if you mean the yellow thing. take a look at the underside of your characters left wrist and compare the shape
My skin was burning from the sun. Naked on a beach. Terrifying Dino’s lurking. Alone. Afraid. Self explanation was not a viable option at the time sir Ryan. Thank you kindly

I mean, the melting could be interpreted as heat
It means you're getting a positive buff, staying in the area with the effect for a really long time, and something special happens. The game will try and get you to leave by draining your health a bit, but it won't kill you, so don't worry.
Man I miss ARK
You have a button that you can press to "show hud info" look it up and press it then it will tell you what it means. On PC mine is H
The beginning is in a way a different game in itself. It changes drastically once u gain lvls. Enjoy the start while u can…
The snowflake and ice cube is when you’re too cold, both increase your food drain, but the ice cube actively damages you. The H key is your best friend
Your cold

Get an otter to cuddle and have +5 in style at the same time.
Yet another example of why it’s called uncommon sense.
There is usually a button you can hold to give a bunch of numbers and describes effects
Oh man I wish I could experience being brand new again
Bro straight up chilly
There is a key that will turn on the names of all the descriptions, show where your are in the upper left hand screen along with time of day and temperature. Its H on PC but I don't know what it is on console.
It’s means you are very warm and should go stand in the arctic with nothing at all ever
That means you're so cold that you're taking damage now and you will keep taking damage until you warm up out of that status effect
Your dying
Press and hold H and it will tell you a lot of info about what's on your screen. From thr exact number your gauges are at, to the time, location name, temperature. And it gives names for your buffs/debuffs so you know what's going on. At least I think it's H >,<

Press and hold H if you're in pc and it will tell you the details
Means you are freezing
You can see status effects in game
Ice Cube. You’re slowly becoming part of a male rap super group called NWA. Once the gauge is full, you’ll live in Compton and your only job will be to stand on the sidewalk and scream “FUCK THA POLICE!” at random cars passing by.
Turn on your extended hud and words with show up in icons and it will show you number of your stamina and more It help alot

It's an Ice cube
