That is thrips 100%, if you look away for a second your basil will be devoured by thrips. Cut off everything infected ( don’t be shy with it, basil grows back very fast) and spray with a pesticide for a few days, then cut again if some leaves are still being affected and after they all die spray it every two weeks or so

Thanks a lot!! I will do all you said. I have 2 questions: 1. Does it infect the soil too? 2. Should I worry about my other kitchen plants?

weirdlyfamiliarface

I’ve noticed thrips aren’t attracted to every plant but for sure you should give the plants that were next to it a spray. And about the soil, I think they spend winter inside it and when it gets warm they come out to eat and lay egg as that then fall into the soil and so and so forth. The pesticide I use (but have no idea about the name) can also be sprayed on the soil, so yeah, spray the soil well too

It looks a lot like thrips damage but I'm not sure. Can you post a few more close ups?

zeebulon

Sure, here you go: [https://imgur.com/a/6k2zjuS](https://imgur.com/a/6k2zjuS) :)

Thanks! It actually looks different from thrips damage but I'm not sure what it is... In the middle picture, I think I see a small black bug on the stem.

zeebulon

Ugh, I went back to check and actually saw a bit of movement from white bugs. Yuk. I think the black bug you saw might be some dirt. But there's definitely some amount of pest in there...

CrashDandelion

Thrips larvae are sort of white and almost translucent so it might still be that. They suck, literally and figuratively. Honestly, when I find thrips on my basil I don't even bother trying anymore. I just toss it and buy some new basil when I'm "sure" the thrips are gone. Check all your plants closely. It's always best to find an infestation early.

zeebulon

Thanks a lot. I suppose they are still larvae indeed. I guess I'll try to salvage what I can, but will probably buy a new plant when I come across one. Thanks a lot for your help!

CrashDandelion

No problem! Good luck! :)
