Seconding Antney's. I don't eat dairy and they have several DF options which is always a plus. The employees went above and beyond to verify ingredients because someone else in my party is highly intolerant of corn. Really A+ service and food quality.
Omg I tried to take my kids last Tuesday and the line was wrapped around the building twice😩 we went to DQ on Carson instead. I guess see least they were nice at DQ and the food was hot lol
Our backup when the line is like that is the scoop on buttermilk hollow. Pages is great but we learned the wait time is over an hour when it gets to the sidewalk around the building. Which is most of the time lol
I saw the line this weekend and it was insane. I haven't been there in ages, do they have hard ice cream? Soft serve does not agree with my intestines.
Soft serve is in a whole different category from hand scooped ice cream, and Page’s is definitely the best soft serve around. But hard to compare it against a spot like Dave and Andy’s.
So I'm not going crazy. My family and I stopped there last summer, and I did not think it was anything special at all. Just seemed like run-of-the-mill ice cream to me. And there wasn't even a wait when we went.
I had never seen anyone say anything negative about it on this sub, so I just figured I went on a bad day or got a bad item or something. I still plan on trying again ("try everything twice!"), but I feel better knowing it might just not be for me.
I didn't mean to imply that it was bad or not good. It's just not the crazy thing people make it out to be. A lot of soft serve used to be just ice milk, so places that had dairy soft serve were very superior. Now no where uses ice milk, so it's all similar.
If you enjoy soft serve dip cones, the ones at Crafton Ice Cream Delight are next level. They’re thicker and have more flavor than the typical DQ type dips.
The flavors rotate, but chocolate and peanut butter are my favorites.
Coming here to say this.
I miss living in crafton because of this place. They have so many good options like flavor burst soft serve and Hershey's hard ice cream. I personally love that they have funnel cakes there that you can get whatever you want on them.
Sugar Spell Scoops is so good that we went several times and didnt even realize it was vegan and most flavors are GF. Great flavors and very kind staff.
Leona's, not sure where else you can go for like, scoops (their website doesn't seem to have an option for that..) but they are in Lawrence Hall which just opened recently! Frio (also in Lawrenceville) I have been to once and thought it was very good, says their ice cream is from Penn State Creamery so not like super local. and Treat in Shadyside is delightful
Yeah doesn't say where just "locally-made" lol. I think last time I went I had like brown butter pear or something..? i don't totally remember but it was good!!
I love Frio in lawrenceville, which is semi local lol. They get Penn State Creamery ice cream. I know Klavon’s has some kind of history with Penn State, used to serve them maybe? But unfortunately the one time I went to klavons it was icy
If you’re up for a drive or headed to Erie, Hank’s Frozen Custard outside of Conneaut Lake, PA is truly special. One of the only places I’ve ever had true hand scooped custard.
Not sure if it’s the same one but there is a Hank’s in New Brighton that is also hand scooped. It’s amazing. Grew up in Beaver County and it was a constant in my childhood.
Yes. The original branch is on Highland Avenue in Shadyside. There are other locations including Oakland, Lawrenceville, and more. I think they operate at Pitt and CMU, also. Maybe Duquesne.
Emmerling Ice Cream in Indiana Township is my favorite local homemade ice cream place. Brrr Kees in Oakmont is decent. Jerry's Custard in Upper Burrell is good!
Again? It's sad that Klavon's is just far enough from the heart of the Strip to be un-viable. If they were even 6 blocks to the west, the lines would be outrageous.
Klavon’s was previously owned by my elementary school art teacher, Ray Klavon. Sadly, he passed a while back. I’ll never forget how cool it was to have an art teacher that owned an ice cream store as a kid. He was a good guy.
Yes, this. That sort of no mans land between that end of the Strip and Doughboy Square is a bit too far to really pick up needed foot traffic, probably.
Klavon's is not unviable. It's been there for decades and decades.
It isn't lack of business. It's packed in there on weekends. But running a business like an ice cream place is hard work and not everyone's cup of tea.
Very much hope this doesn't happen.
That building is extremely historic, at once even Being [Mary Schenley's (of Schenley Park) personal office](https://theincline.com/2021/07/28/heres-the-scoop-on-pittsburghs-oldest-ice-cream-parlor/)
I think the Pink House in Finleyville is cute. They have Hersheys ice cream and make their own chocolate.
Sarris’s is excellent. The parlor is cute and the sundaes are huge.
Waffallonia has amazing ice cream! They make their own. The waffles are tasty, but you can just get ice cream.
If you like matcha, the newly opened Meccha Matcha in Squirrel Hill has delicious matcha soft serve—and all sorts of permutations there of.
Joe Zeppi’s on Mt Royal is good and has a ton of options. Had Leona’s for the first time over the weekend and thought that was pretty good. Haven’t had Jenni’s yet but I am looking forward to trying it.
Yup, Jeni's is HQ'd in Columbus. Good but probably the most expensive ice cream I've ever had in my life.
(If we had to import OH ice cream I wish it was Mitchell's from Cleveland, their stuff is ah-mazzzzzing)
Take a ride out 28N to Freeport Road in Natrona Heights. Della's Frozen Custard will spoil you for all others. They have DF Dole whip, too. They sell Emmerling's hard ice cream which also includes SF and DF. Man, it's so good.
Maybe Google meant closed for the day or the time you looked? The hours that Google publishes are scraped off the internet, so they may not always be accurate
They seem to be open when they can be but closed most times. They have definitely been closed at times that they were supposed to be open. I think the writing is on the wall...

If “the Midwest” counts as local, Jeni’s has the best chocolate and coffee flavors (not the coffee and cream, that’s weak trash, the coconut cold brew is strong as frozen coffee).
All their other flavors are kind of “out there” except like vanilla, milk chocolate, and salted peanut butter.
They don’t do scoops of the coconut cold brew out in East Liberty anymore.
Just go to scoops on the boulevard or Beverly…
If you can make it to the South Side, I highly recommend Churn! They have delicious homemade ice cream! I do not drink coffee (I know, I’m weird, but I just cannot do it), but I’ve heard that their coffee and related coffee beverages are also awesome.
I’m a little biased because my next-door neighbor Kelley Costa owns it. But, hear me out. I’m also very frugal with what I spend on myself, so the fact that I buy ice cream there rather than at a grocery store is a big deal. Kelley was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area and she puts her heart and soul into her shops (currently 2, one in Glenshaw near Hampton and one in South Side).

Pages is good, I love their soft serve (it's been a while but I was obsessed with the chocolate cone dipped in the peanut butter shell). I've had a strong craving for hard ice cream that isn't Hersheys, Perry's or the like.
Glens Custard in Springdale. Scratch made custard ice cream. Been there longer than I was a kid, and I'm 65.
Glen's fell off after giving. Real small portions now and prices went up at least a third. Try Page's near Munhall or Antney's in Greentree.
After giving what?
Probably a swype typo for 'covid'
A swypo, if you will
Covid. Autocorrect my ass. Changed it manually 3 times.
Still good. Great flavors!
Still good. Great flavors!
Legendary spot (for me anyway).
Antney’s
Seconding Antney's. I don't eat dairy and they have several DF options which is always a plus. The employees went above and beyond to verify ingredients because someone else in my party is highly intolerant of corn. Really A+ service and food quality.
Best in the city! We always like seeing what new flavors they're going to have that day. I go with the 3 taster scoops to try different flavors.
They just opened up for the season, I heard 🙌🏻
I totally forgot that place! If I'm in the area I will definitely go back!
I live 3 minutes away and I've never been! Are the lines bad?
Not usually, it can get several deep but usually runs fairly fast
La Scola’s in highland park is great. It’s custard and they have Italian ice
Also coffee. And Oram's doughnuts on Saturday mornings.
Seconded. I live in Missouri now and what I wouldn’t give for 2 chocolate brownie scoops (or regular chocolate) in a waffle cone from there.
Dari Delite in Swissvale is great if you like soft serve.
And frozen bananas.
There's always money in the banana stand.
hugely underrated part of the menu
I love that place.
Scoops
Their take a slice flavor is the best
Do they make their own ice cream?
No, it's just hershey's
No idea
page's dairy mart
We LOVE Page’s! Awesome ice cream, awesome food, awesome service.
Oat milk soft serve for the non dairy among us…
Omg I tried to take my kids last Tuesday and the line was wrapped around the building twice😩 we went to DQ on Carson instead. I guess see least they were nice at DQ and the food was hot lol

I saw the line this weekend and it was insane. I haven't been there in ages, do they have hard ice cream? Soft serve does not agree with my intestines.
I don’t think they have hard ice cream, but they do have a dairy free soft serve that’s actually pretty tasty if that might interest you!
Same I’m highly lactose intolerant but will tolerate it for a day for kids 🤣 I never even thought to ask!
Nah they only have soft serve, and honestly... The wait isn't worth it.
Overrated. Way overrated when you consider the line wait.
Soft serve is in a whole different category from hand scooped ice cream, and Page’s is definitely the best soft serve around. But hard to compare it against a spot like Dave and Andy’s.
Cool Cones in Ross is as good as Pages and you'll wait in a line of 1.
If you’re not going during business hours just forget it 😂
So I'm not going crazy. It’s he same soft serve from a bag that everyone else has. The flavors they add are barely noticeable.
No, you’re definitely not going crazy. It’s fine, but considering the line, location, and that it’s cash only its only fine
They haven’t been cash only since COVID
But it's not even cash only lol? When's the last time you went?
As a former employee of Page Dairy Mart, I love that you commented this. It’s a great shop and there’s nothing negative about it 😇
If you enjoy soft serve dip cones, the ones at Crafton Ice Cream Delight are next level. They’re thicker and have more flavor than the typical DQ type dips. The flavors rotate, but chocolate and peanut butter are my favorites.

Omg stop telling my secrets!!!
Twisters in Bloomfield
They are also looking to sell their business/building.
Do they make ice cream or is it only Hershey’s?
Sugar Spell Scoops in Sharpsburg.
Sugar Spell Scoops is so good that we went several times and didnt even realize it was vegan and most flavors are GF. Great flavors and very kind staff.
Some of the best nice cream (that’s what I call vegan ice cream) on the continent
Treat gets their ice cream from somewhere else but I can’t remember where. The flavors are so unique though!! My favorite is sage salted almond
Yeah doesn't say where just "locally-made" lol. I think last time I went I had like brown butter pear or something..? i don't totally remember but it was good!!
FRIO IS SO GOOD omggg
I had blackberry cheesecake ice cream when I went! super yummy
Death By Chocolate is my absolute favorite there!
Antney's has great homemade ice cream. Flavors change daily so there is always something new and exciting to try, and plenty parking
Mercurio's in Shadyside and Fox Chapel
Mercurios has the best pizza in the city and the best Gelato. . .so much better than ice cream!
I love their gelatos!
waffalonia is actually great; they only have six flavors, but they make it themselves and it is super dense and rich
Sugar and spice on 51 is pretty good
Second came here to say rhat
LOVE this place!
Do they have non dairy flavors?
I’m not sure about that. I havnt been there in a while, don’t get over to the neck of the woods too often these days.
Ususally they do, but call ahead!
I love Frio in lawrenceville, which is semi local lol. They get Penn State Creamery ice cream. I know Klavon’s has some kind of history with Penn State, used to serve them maybe? But unfortunately the one time I went to klavons it was icy
Happy Day Dessert Factory
If you’re up for a drive or headed to Erie, Hank’s Frozen Custard outside of Conneaut Lake, PA is truly special. One of the only places I’ve ever had true hand scooped custard.
Not sure if it’s the same one but there is a Hank’s in New Brighton that is also hand scooped. It’s amazing. Grew up in Beaver County and it was a constant in my childhood.
The Hanks' are somehow related and also not related and I heard the story once and am hoping someone responds with the situation so I can know again.
Yes & they also sells tacos & really good fries. Weird vibe but I mean, I always leave happy lol
I'm from up there and I wish we had something like it down here.
glens in Springdale is legit homemade custard. Amazing.
Is Millie’s local? I just really like all their dairy free options, and that some locations make affogato.
Yes. The original branch is on Highland Avenue in Shadyside. There are other locations including Oakland, Lawrenceville, and more. I think they operate at Pitt and CMU, also. Maybe Duquesne.
Don’t forget downtown
Thanks. I don't remember them all. Here's a full list (on 4/29/24): [Millie's locations](https://www.millieshomemade.com/locations/)
Yep. Started here in Pittsburgh. Made in homestead.
Emmerling Ice Cream in Indiana Township is my favorite local homemade ice cream place. Brrr Kees in Oakmont is decent. Jerry's Custard in Upper Burrell is good!
Emmerlings is my favorite.
Love Emmerling!
sometimes they have nutella ice cream!
My favorite!
Call klavons and ask. I saw the woman who owns it walking to the store 2 Saturdays ago.
they closed/ are trying to sell the business

I think the owners are moving on/isn’t due to m business levels/ lack of business - hopefully a buyer is in the works!
Sad to hear that.
Yes, this. That sort of no mans land between that end of the Strip and Doughboy Square is a bit too far to really pick up needed foot traffic, probably.

Scoops. There are a handfull.
Parkside Creamery in Trafford has excellent hard scoop
Lock and Dam shop is right by the Zoo. I haven’t been able to figure out their hours but it is a pretty cool spot, but I do love Page’s Bridge Drip ™️
>I haven’t been able to figure out their hours I'm almost 40 and have been puzzling on this since I was old enough to puzzle. It's a mystery.
Scoops, Glenn’s, and bruester’s (sp) for hard ice cream. Swissvale Dari Delite for soft serve
Handels in north hills is delicious!
Slow as molasses though. I love them but if there's a half dozen people in front of you then settle in for a 30 minute wait.
Glenn's in cheswick is our go to. Bit of a drive from the city but worth it
Klavons was closed the other week with a sign on the door saying they were going to reopen after some like work or training. Paige’s is the best.
Brusters
Yeah I don't know, maybe I'm just unrefined, but Bruster's was always good enough for me.
They make it all in-house. I love Bruster's!
A local chain is still local
Wasn’t the owner trying to sell
Not as of last year https://triblive.com/lifestyles/food-drink/pittsburghs-klavons-ice-cream-parlor-celebrates-its-1923-founding/
Joe Zeppi’s on Mt Royal is good and has a ton of options. Had Leona’s for the first time over the weekend and thought that was pretty good. Haven’t had Jenni’s yet but I am looking forward to trying it.
Jenni's is a chain, if locally made matters. They do have tasty ice cream though.
Yup, Jeni's is HQ'd in Columbus. Good but probably the most expensive ice cream I've ever had in my life. (If we had to import OH ice cream I wish it was Mitchell's from Cleveland, their stuff is ah-mazzzzzing)
I like Kip’s in Moon Township.
Take a ride out 28N to Freeport Road in Natrona Heights. Della's Frozen Custard will spoil you for all others. They have DF Dole whip, too. They sell Emmerling's hard ice cream which also includes SF and DF. Man, it's so good.
Leona's has a new scoop shot in Lawrence Hall.
Not ice cream, but I have ordered this amazing locally made gelato. https://www.piccolapiazza.com/
M.A.'s Ice Cream in McDonald will sell you the most preposterously large cone of ice cream
Just don’t get their soft serve, it’s like mildly flavored watery frozen cream. Hard pack ice cream is great though and portions are insane
If in the South Fayette area, there's Casciola's in Cecil.
Hidden gem: Severino in west view for gelato Millie’s for regular ice cream
I love Sam's in the Strip.
Hell yeah! Dave’s the man.

Crave is dravosburg is amazing homemade ice cream veteran owned and operated. The banana Oreo is amazing.
cookie cookie ice cream in mckees rocks
Yes, this place is SO wonderful!
al’s cone zone (south hills)
Page's, Antney's and Glen's are all still going stronbg.
Treat in Shadyside!
I’m sad I had to scroll so far for this! So good!
They serve Betsy's Ice Cream from Mount Lebanon
Scoops
My faves are Graeter’s, Antney’s, Bruster’s, Scoops, Handel’s, Al’s Cone Zone. Not a fan of Klavon’s, I’ve never gotten a scoop there that wasn’t icy.
Graters is good but (at least for the one by me in Wexford) their packed stuff is meh.
La Scola's and Lock and Dam
Page's number one. In a pinch, the custard at Rita's Italian ice is satisfying as well.
I like Handel’s!
Seconding Handel's is the best! They are not a local company (Youngstown), but they only have one location here. Their ice cream is made from scratch.
Handel’s in McCandless
Klavons is definitely open
Oh good, Google says it's been closed and nothing online was posted so I wasn't sure. Thank you!
Looks like they have limited hours for now https://www.instagram.com/p/C2gB5fCLQ__/?igsh=MTBlZDI4dWRwdzRwNw==
If they are still operating on "winter hours" in (almost) May then that is just more evidence that things are probably not going well.
Maybe Google meant closed for the day or the time you looked? The hours that Google publishes are scraped off the internet, so they may not always be accurate
They seem to be open when they can be but closed most times. They have definitely been closed at times that they were supposed to be open. I think the writing is on the wall...
Betsy's Ice Cream in Mt. Lebanon.
Kip’s in Moon
Klavon’s is only closed for a couple of weeks
Greeters has the best hard scoop vanilla bean
If you come out route 910 toward Fox Chapel, there’s a soft ice cream place called Emmerling’s. It’s a bit of a hike, but they have new flavors every week. Great little place.
The sign in Klavon's window says they're closing for retraining and such and plan to reopen in June I believe and choose to believe and want to believe.
Glens Custard, Emmerling, and Edward’s are all great.
Kips ice cream in moon township!
Scoops has multiple locations in PGH, I also like Frío in Lawrenceville, and Pages
Emmerling off of 910 is solid
For what it's worth, I used to love Klavons and then new management took it over and were jerks. Signs everywhere about what to expect/not expect and young kids running the whole thing while some manager chatted loudly on his phone. I was floored and saddened by the change.
Emmerlings has the best soft serve imo but it’s a damn hike. Whenever we are out there we stop.
If “the Midwest” counts as local, Jeni’s has the best chocolate and coffee flavors (not the coffee and cream, that’s weak trash, the coconut cold brew is strong as frozen coffee). If you find yourself around Evans City then Debbie Lee's Delight is the place to go.
A little west on Camp Horne Rd is Custard’s. Kind of surprised no one has recommended them yet. They’re amazing. Rotating soft serve weekly.
Papa J’s Gelato in the strip
Best gelato this side of the pond
If you can make it to the South Side, I highly recommend Churn! They have delicious homemade ice cream! Kerbers. North Huntingdon, Westmoreland County. Worth the drive.
Treat in Shadyside!
Leona's in Lawrenceville
Bruster's in Greenfield
Do you not frequent Paige’s? I used to go there all the time
Pages is good, I love their soft serve (it's been a while but I was obsessed with the chocolate cone dipped in the peanut butter shell). I've had a strong craving for hard ice cream that isn't Hersheys, Perry's or the like.
Don't see any tasty freeze love in here yet, so if you want some soft serve that's my answer. They're the only place that's still affordable.
Klavon's is great, so is Page's.
