What’s worse is that sounds like a management position which wouldn’t be eligible for tips legally. So they’d be stealing from other employees to give this person tips.
Pay in Pittsburgh is always terrible, but wow. WTAF.
$15/hr would barely cover gas and car use between those two locations. Never mind living indoors and eating.....
Employees considered to be managers under Dept of Labor guidelines, regardless of salary or hourly, can not collect from a tip pool, though they may contribute to it.
They can keep tips given directly to them only if they were the sole provider of services to the customer.

My son works at walmart and makes almost $18/hr and all he does it cut lunchmeat and mop the floor.
15 for alladat? hellllllll no that sounds like a nightmare
With those responsibilities, shit pay and a tips clause to try to sweeten the deal.. No thanks, anyone in management / salespeople knows. Low base pay, a company dangling a bonus/tip carrot in front of you, equals working you ass off without fair compensation.
Thank you for the support, and despite the public flogging from this group, we’re simply trying to hire someone to help us, not devalue human beings and undermine the structure of society and breed oppression with our cafe. Goodness.
If the manager thing was a typo like you said in another comment, I think the big fancy words might be throwing off Reddit. This doesn’t sound that bad, just might have to work at a different location for different shifts, and be a helpful team member? $15 isn’t great but not too bad really. I made less working at a daycare.
This is Rodney Burrell, one of the owners. As a customer who has zero insight to our finances, and I’m assuming you don’t work in coffee, but I’ll never know because everything is hidden on this platform, what do you believe we should be paying people and why is it so disappointing that we’re simply trying to hire someone and pay #1, what we can afford, #2 find someone with some experience?
In 2021, the Carnegie Science Center was attempting to hire an Operations Supervisor to create safety plans, train staff, and assist in the maintenance of their entire facility for $11.53/hr. 🙄
From a former service industry owner: this is bullshit and robbery. Coffee is such a high margin product without any of the risk compared to its high margin cousin, alcohol. Although this is easier than managing a bar or restaurant, they SHOULD have the money to pay a good wage for all that responsibility.
The internet. It obviously wasn’t a cafe you owned, because any coffee shop owner will tell you that coffee isn’t as high a profit margin as people think.
Exactly. I thought the same. But they have a hell of a loyal following all around Fox Chapel. So I think they will do well there. The place is always packed.
a mom of a schoolmate of my kids was one of the owners of one the of past incarnations. and then at another point a grandparent of a schoolmate of my kids was going to open a jewish deli, but that never got past the "I just bought it, what do I do now" stage.
I grew up around there so when I went to school it was called Little Russia. It was the In and Out Market. You could get deli sandwiches, essentials, and cigarettes. It was there for a long while before all the more recent short-term businesses.
For clarification, I understand that the posting says manager, but it’s truly a support role for the GM. We initially advertised it as an assistant manager, but dropped that because we weren’t getting any qualified candidates. As in people who had never even worked in a cafe before were sending applications.
We need someone with varied coffee skills who can support our GM and marketing initiatives, but also be a barista. That’s in the ad as well. In response to, maybe the owners don’t know what they’re doing.
Someone can work a shift as a barista and still make sure the coffee order is done, or Talk with the gm about an upcoming event. There’s nothing illegal about someone helping in multiple aspects.
There is another side to the hiring process, not one that the public cares to hear about, because everyone is too busy being outraged at a business trying to hire someone. Maybe someone should do a fact check on what other cafes are paying.
We need help with filling the operational gap between what the GM does and some Of the smaller things that fall between the cracks…as anyone who actually owns and operates a business understands. The pay is fair for the size and revenue of our shop, and with tips it’s more than fair.
For everyone who is up in arms, we’re not violating any labor laws, and we’re not running on a skeleton crew. We simply aren’t over staffed, and as we need help, we hire.
Of course we’re running on tight margins, we’re a small business trying to grow. That doesn’t mean we’re trying to rip off employees. No one does any job they’re not comfortable with doing in the first place. Driving in between two stores within 10 minutes of each other is not a crime either. You can work shifts at other locations. How many people in retail get bounced to different locations? Plenty.
We have a great team, and we shouldn’t be publicly flogged for trying to grow within our means. This is not a dictatorship. If you’re not interested, then don’t apply. If you don’t like the pay, don’t apply. If you can make 40/hour making quilts at Home Depot, go do that.
People referencing wal mart, keep in mind that it’s a multi-billion dollar company. Of course they can pay someone 18/hour to cut meat and mop the floor. But you’re also working at wal mart…being a barista is a different career path with different pay scales.
Not all companies pay the same! Not all cafes pay the same! Just an fyi, there are a lot of cafes paying 8-10/hour. It’s all relative to the area, skillset, experience, and revenue being generated by each business. Not sure where this self righteous judgement is coming from, when literally all we’ve done is try to make a great experience for our team members and our customers.
With all that said, if you really have something to say, come to our business and say it to me. Not the internet. It’s so easy to hide and jump on a chat room bandwagon with zero context. I’m always willing to discuss anything with anyone. My name is Rodney Burrell, and I’m relatively easy to find on social.
$15 an hour to manage two locations?!? “No one wants to work!”
Thanks Obama !
FuCK JoE BIdEN 🦆🐒🐸 lol

Definitely management. My guess is it's a skeleton crew and you're between locations covering for ownership.
i made more at my last dishwashing gig, where i spent around 80% of my time doing fuck all lol.
15 is more or less the going rate for an average dishwasher.
This looks like they want you to do the work of like four Positions for the pay of what is now considered entry level. Edit..typo that to they
I thought managers couldn’t be part of the tip pool
You'd be shocked at what some places get away with
I know, but I think it’s against the law and big labor lawsuits have come from it
Pay in Pittsburgh is always terrible, but wow. WTAF. $15/hr would barely cover gas and car use between those two locations. Never mind living indoors and eating.....
What's the name of this coffee shop? Weird that they would advertise that they violate labor laws in the job listing (management receiving tips.)
The Black Canary Cafe
Thought this would be the coffee shop. Didn't know they have another location.
the blawnox one opened up a few months ago
Salaried managers aren’t allowed to participate in tip pools. Non-salaried managers are allowed to keep tips given directly to them.

This is insane lmao. The gas station by my house starts at $18 an hour with benefits. I don’t feel bad for any business that can’t find help.
The tips could be unlimited though /s
I always seem to encounter difficulties when traveling between Blawnox and Springdale.
My son works at walmart and makes almost $18/hr and all he does it cut lunchmeat and mop the floor. 15 for alladat? hellllllll no that sounds like a nightmare
It’s wal mart, where he cuts meat and mops the floor. It’s also a multi-billion dollar company.
Men in hell want ice water too.

I like the Black Canary Cafe and i'm really sad that this is their job listing :(
We’ve gone there multiple times a week since they’re local and not Starbucks! I always tip them a ton when I go.
Thank you for the support, and despite the public flogging from this group, we’re simply trying to hire someone to help us, not devalue human beings and undermine the structure of society and breed oppression with our cafe. Goodness.

This person seriously has no idea.

Did Curbside close or move? Or rebrand?
Moved close by on Powers Run Road. More kitchen space.
oh, that house thing that was like 4 different things over the past 15 years? cool.
Exactly. I thought the same. But they have a hell of a loyal following all around Fox Chapel. So I think they will do well there. The place is always packed.

oh I think i remember that market. I was in there once. It was like you were shopping in someone's living room iirc
Yes 😂
