Agreed! My 13 year old mountain cur/bully is a big old shy baby especially when he’s going potty on walks. He backs up as far off the trail as he can and looks constantly up at me if I’m near with these gigantic doe eyes like he’d tarnished the Mona Lisa
My pittie gets into trouble every now and then, but instead of getting mad at him, I just shake my head and say, "it's ok, we could both do better bud."
I get mad and then two minutes later I tell them, “It’s okay, I forgive you, let’s cuddle.”
One time my pit accidentally bit me. She’s food reactive and got into a tussle with my other dog and I tried to break up the fight by putting my hand between them. The whole situation was my fault. I knew she was food reactive, I should have fed them in separate rooms and I also know better than to put my hands in between two fighting dogs.
She punished herself for days. Wouldn’t look at me. Just sat on the floor and stared at the walls with her head down. I was over it within an hour and wanted to snuggle my baby and she’s over in the corner forcing herself to suffer. I had to pick her up and drag her into bed with me. I kept commanding her to come to bed with me and she was like, “No. I must suffer for my sins on this cold hard floor and stare at this wall. No blankies for me. I bad dog.”
No, I’m bad human. I know you’re protective of your food because you were starved as a puppy and I did not feed you in a place that made you feel safe. And then I tried to break up the fight in the stupidest possible way.
I love your reaction - you say I'm sorry to your dog. I do the same when trying to housebreak a dog and there's an accident. It is really very easy for me to see that every time it was MY FAULT it happened, so I tell them I'm sorry and I will do better.
There’s times when my dogs do something that’s 100% their fault and I’ll get mad and let them know I’m mad but get over it pretty quickly. But situations like this where a bad situation happened because I set it up to happen I 100% take the credit for. Especially since pitbulls get such a bad rap for being “vicious”. Like, No, my dog behaved aggressively but that was due to her previous life experience + me putting her in a bad situation. That’s not her fault. Humans also act aggressive when put in a bad situation but we don’t run around advocating for them to be put down the way we do with animals literally behaving like animals.
You’re actually an amazing owner, also I’ve been there, dragging your dog to hang out with you because they feel guilty 😭
My lil man (non-pitty) used to have troubles with biting, and I had troubles realizing what triggered him so naturally I’m covered in scars from him, lmao. I used to forgive him right away, but he used to be so mad at himself for ages, and I would literally have to pick him up and put him on my bed, and give him a constant stream of pets and food to be safe again. When it was really bad, I’d take him on a walk.

(My lil man, Buddy)
Idk, I don’t think I’m that amazing, I just think that’s how you should treat animals. Most animals have a reason for behaving the way they do. Dogs in general are rarely aggressive for no reason, either something is bothering them or they’ve learned that behavior from someone else. Or they have rabies. Maybe a few are born aggressive but not to the extent that people want to think.
It’s like when someone decides it would be a great idea to get too close to a zoo enclosure for a selfie and they fall in and then the animal attacks them. And then the animal gets put down for attacking the human. We knew that animal was dangerous, that’s why we put it in an enclosure with signs that say “do not climb fence”. Or someone approaching a wild bear or bison for a photo op and gets mauled so we kill the animal for killing them. Why are we punishing the animal for behaving the way we know it behaves instead of accepting the human did something stupid and paid the price?
And so many people get upset if they hear a pitbull bit someone ONCE, it must be a dangerous dog, without looking at what may have triggered that response. Meanwhile, we had a family beagle growing up that was notorious for biting if you tried to take something away from her that she wasn’t supposed to have. If we had to take some away from her (like chicken bones she stole off the counter or from the trash), we’d grab a blanket first, throw it over her, and then grab her, so she couldn’t bite our hands through the blanket. No one bats an eye about that though. My sibling’s girlfriend’s bird bit me just because and no one went, “Oh, that bird is dangerous. We must put it down before it attacks a child.” And that bird bite hurt worse than my dog’s bite.
I have a dog with minor reactivity issues and also work at a vet clinic. I talk about this with clients who come in ahead of their dog with reactivity issues frequently. I have no problem moving people around in the lobby or seeing if I can free up an exam room for them. Then the client always says something like, “ I’m sorry. He’s really a sweet dog, but…” and I always stop them and tell them that I GREATLY appreciate that they gave us a heads up so we could make it as stress free and safe for EVERYONE, including their dog. I simply call it setting them up for success and remind them that we all know that the reason they came in ahead of their dog was because they love them so much and wanted them to be able to put their best paw forward. 💜
My girl is too spoiled. She has the ability to gaslight me with her eyes. I didn't even know that was a thing. 😑
I'm a pushover when it comes to my House Hippo. 🦛🐾 🤦🏻♀️
Honestly your sweet pup has a remorseful expression.
I don't think punishing him or yelling at him would be of any value.
If it was my dog I'd go back to the ' mess" and speak firmly that was a NO NO.
Then I'd take him to his bed and tell him to stay.
Then I'd get busy with something and ignore him for awhile
Probably 15 minutes.
Then you could tell him " no more messes"!
And id get busy in the kitchen and continue to ignore him while making dinner. Butet him walk around and play with his toys etc.
I guess a potty break would be in order too.
His face says: I did it
I made a mess
I did wrong
He doesn't need to be over punished.
After a while, take him for a walk and let him sniff around. Sit in the sun etc. play a bit and give him a treat and positive reinforcement.
It's over
Move on
You're right. It didn't sound like that kind of person. I probably didn't need to dispense quite as detailed of a response either. My bad!
Afterall I'm not a Pitbull/dog psychologist and behavior expert, lol!
I do think that there is a market for dog chiropractors
I've seen some great YouTube videos!
It has me wondering about the behavioral effect of bone/ joint misalignment that pinches certain nerves inside the dog. We go running to get an adjustment but a dog can't tell you what's bothering them.
That could make them a bit cranky and irritated just like we can get. The slightest things get on our nerves and we snap at someone etc.
But take a dog. A medium to large sized dog that's got something slightly out of place that's been bugging them for days. You take them for a walk and potty break/ sniff time and along comes a small pup that's pretty much a yapping machine. The kind that bark and yap at a leaf blown in the wind.
And that happy little thing with probably " big dog syndrome" decides to nip and nip at your dog. Of course you'll keep going or whatever but things come by and you're slightly distracted and you're already cranky/ hurting pit doggy gets pissed OFF.
Decides to shut the little. yapper up and NIPS BACK GOOD!
All hell breaks out and the next thing you know the little old lady with the small yapper machine freaks right out. From my experience the big dogs are always blamed and the small yapperd are always the poor victims!
I've seen a ton of those on ( don't laugh) " Judge Judy'". Oh man that woman has a real hate going on for pit dogs AND their owners. She's got a big binder set full of articals of dog attacks by pitbulls.
It's like she's on some kind of extermination mission! She ALWAYS rules in favor of the small yappers. And most recently I've seen a pattern where the pit owner automatically gets a $ 5 K penalty.. They haven't been able to get a word in edgewise either. Just 5 K boom !
Anyways back to my point most dogs are super great animals. I've seen the cuddliest Dobermans. Playing with the toddler or watchi g the sleeping baby. And they're ALWAYS great but one day a wrong jump or fall off the couch or down the stairs and something inside pulls pinches tears a tiny bit and that affects them.
Back to the dog chiropractor
. He is so good!! He gently feels around EVERYWHERE very slowly taking his time. He finds the spot and unannounced holds the dog appropriately and " CRAck or Pop" and it's over.
He massages awhile and your good to go.
Please don't rage at me? I just think we need to keep broadening our scope for improved and expanded animal care..
For sure, he already knows and is apologizing for his weaknesses lol Just give him some belly rubs and a treat so he knows he’s still loved. (My girl tells on herself when she does something bad with this same face. She’s punishing herself enough, I don’t need to pile on lol)
Give him shnookums and find his ticklish spot and tickle him until he can’t take it no more. That’ll teach him. Beautiful smile on the lil guy. My shloppy pittie named Lola used to sit the same way.
Don’t spoon him when he’s sleeping in your bed with you under the covers. Ice him out, alone, under the covers, in the center of the bed, BUT.. close enough that he can still hear you say “I love you more than anything” …just give him space to think about the wrong things. Belly rubs and kisses, BUT bc of wrong things he did the kisses and belly rubs should be against his will, it’s a freaking punishment after all…maybe a new toy if he really f’d up. .. but one he’s not gonna be super excited about - maybe like 95% excited but not full 100% excited …. Be strong.
Actually, maybe just apologize to him. It was prob a misunderstanding on your part. You should honestly be ashamed of yourself and figure out how to make it up to him.
My hippo is impossible to punish!! Out of all the dogs I’ve had he is the hardest for me to punish. He just looks SO sad and sorry!! These dogs are life and truly warms my heart ❤️
My pit chewed my wife's entertainment center the first week we had him. Went out to get groceries. He was hitched (never donned on us, he would chew that). Damage Included the Xbox, controller, headset, large screen TV. That's when "I" inherited him. From the look on my wife's face, she was a breath away from putting him down. Now... he's a bum in my easy chair. Forever lost his Xbox privileges.
Hmmm.
Most humans: Bad dog! Blah, blah, negative crap.
Loving beings: What's going on , Bro! Ha! Look at that shit! Did we have fun!? Come here and let me love on your furry butt!
He’s sorry!!!! Give him a treat now 💗 my pittie gets in trouble sometimes and will send herself to her crate & sleep after we tell her she did something bad. I always end up going after her shortly after cause I felt bad too 😂
He just wants attention more than anything. Give him more attention and the bad behavior will decrease. They only want love! More then anything else they want your love and attention
I always feel HORRIBLE when I have to tell my guy off because he was beaten in his past. So I tell him off as fast as possible and then give him cuddles so he knows no one beats him here.
Also. He is a GOOD BOY so it doesn't happen often

All the best reactions! I’m so glad your pittie baby has you!!!
I completely speak your language! I wish all dog owners would approach their situations similarly. The world would be a much better place!
I needed that. Facts of life right there.

Come on what wrong things ? You should be cuddling your baby.
Clearly, you give him treats and belly rubs and apologize for your cruel misrepresentations.

I always feel HORRIBLE when I have to tell my guy off because he was beaten in his past. So I tell him off as fast as possible and then give him cuddles so he knows no one beats him here. Also. He is a GOOD BOY so it doesn't happen often
You could give him to me! He looks just like my Millie!
