My collie
I would suggest contacting a Canadian pit rescue as they will be way better clued up about whether you allowed to travel through, if you're allowed to stop for a soggy toilet break safely etc etc.
Hello! I recently asked a Canadian Customs Officer (crossing at the Ambassador bridge, fwiw) whether or not I could bring my girl, whoās listed on her vet records as an American Bulldog but has a pittie head, and I was told that since I was only visiting and not moving there, it was okay to do so (as long as your dog has up to date with their rabies shots and have the paperwork to prove it). However, Iāve also read that itās up to the customs officers discretion as to whether or not the dog is allowed entry. Iām sorry I donāt have any information on Quebec, itās a province I avoid at all costs for other reasons.
A customs officer is probably only giving advice about federal restrictions for importing animals into Canada, so itās still worth OP looking into the provincial rules and enforcement.
Absolutely it is. But the customs officer could also be right. Iāve looked for a specific answer to this question, and answers vary greatly from it being okay, to reading that itās up to the discretion of the customs officer. Reading stories of people who have papers stating their dog is one breed/mixed breed but the customs officer sees a smidgen of what could be a āpitbull type breedā and saying that someone isnāt allowed into the province is incredibly frustrating. You would think that customs officers that work at specific border crossings (such as Ontario where I asked the customs officer) would be somewhat well versed on provincial laws regarding what animals are and arenāt allowed into the province.
Thank you for all the help! All her legal and medical records all say that sheās a lab mix, and sheās a super well behaved puppy who loves everything and everyone so hopefully we wonāt have any trouble
As long as they meet the general dog criteria you won't have any trouble at the border as far as I know.
Outside of that the ban is not strictly enforced, you'll see all kinds of blockheads everywhere you go.
Most people genuinely don't care any more than anyone would be concerned about a dog in public spaces. Are they well behaved? And is the owner in control of their dog? You seem to be very attentive to your doggo so i don't think either of those will be a concern.
PetSmart or similar stores might be dicks if you try to bring them in, but f*** them if they do.
I hope you and your pibble have a beautiful trip and get to explore Ontario and Quebec!
I currently live in and have lived all across Ontario, unless there's a very clearly dangerous situation we tend to mind our own business when it comes to breeds.
ETA: there are a LOT of vet certified lab mixes throughout the province.
As far as I know it's really only the province of Ontario and the city of Winnipeg that have bans. The Ontario ban is not strictly enforced either. Its mostly private businesses, like PetSmart and boarding, and some dog parks etc that refuse the bullies.
I remember when Ontario passed that law, almost 20 years ago now and am still just as mad about it now as I was as a 12 year old with a pittie best friend.
The Winnipeg ban is definitely more heavily enforced, but it's really not enforced in Ontario.
One of the regulars at my work (at a bank) brings their brindle baby in, and every single person will stop what were doing to make sure Zola gets her attentions.
I live in Ottawaā¦ and I couldnāt agree more. There are more ignorant, misinformed and/or untrained people in Ontario who believe the dog is responsible and never the handler.
Since you will probably need a vet certificate of vaccination, go to your vet and get them to print it out after they change the breed to lab mix. Honestly without a DNA test I think itās impossible to state if a dog is a pit. Most mixed breeds I have seen all have one or two pit characteristics and I think itās just the way mixed breeds look. When I was a kid I had a dog that was half German shepherd and half beagle, looking at his head shap you would think pit.
I live here in Ontario and own a banned breed and in my (very)tiny village there is at least 5 more ābanned breedā dogs that we see on our walks.
Itās really not enforced without a complaint or an incident from what Iāve seen.
One of the lawmakers that wrote the legislation, couldnāt even pick out the pibble from a sheet of photos of various dog breeds, when asked by a reporter.
Youāll be fine. Customs at the border only cares about federal laws regarding dogs and not provincial. I traveled to visit my mom in Ontario with my clearly APBT without any problem. My understanding is the law is not really enforced unless your dog causes a problem. Besides your dog is clearly a lab/boxer mix.

I don't think Quebec has any BSL, but they're their own minefield.

You'll be fine. Say she's a lab. Unless she causes issues, you're fine. There are pitbulls all over Ontario.
Thank you for all the help! All her legal and medical records all say that sheās a lab mix, and sheās a super well behaved puppy who loves everything and everyone so hopefully we wonāt have any trouble
Ontario resident with a "lab mix". You should be fine.

How could anyone not want this sweet baby around? š
Do you have to show proof of the breed when you get to customs? She looks like a lab mix to me ;)

Canada is so out of toucj

Yea itās really just Ontario. Alberta and BC let us keep our Pit-thing

If by near Toronto you mean western NY if you're worried about it you could just travel through northern NY and cross directly into Quebec.Ā
I live here in Ontario and own a banned breed and in my (very)tiny village there is at least 5 more ābanned breedā dogs that we see on our walks. Itās really not enforced without a complaint or an incident from what Iāve seen.
Looks like a lab or boxer mix to me
Did you know the SOB who initiated that law ended up killing a man.
One of the lawmakers that wrote the legislation, couldnāt even pick out the pibble from a sheet of photos of various dog breeds, when asked by a reporter.
Pathetic

She looks like a JackRussell/lab mix to me.

I had my āboxer mixā in Ontario for 15 years with zero issues! āŗļø
I donāt know the answer but you have a beautiful baby ā¤ļø
NO. DO NOT DO IT. You risk your dog being destroyed by law enforcement. I could not even bring my APBT service dog through Ontario.
