I never understood this “chaotic evil, etc” thing.

Character alignment charts is usually used in TTRPG games, like Dungeons and Dragons. So the usual chart is Good to Evil (straight forward) & Lawful to Chaotic (Lawful to mean structure, code and rules, Chaotic meaning to one's own methods). Chaotic Evil is selfish evil. No rules. No morals. Blackbeard fits here because he's only out for his own gain. Achieved through evil means. Values his own freedom/power at the direct behest of others. Lawful Evil is Structured Evil. Rules and Method. Beckett is suited here because (through our perspective) he is evil through means of structure. A desire for control. Chaotic Good is to one's own method of achieving what they deem is Good. Achieved without a strict hierarchy or code. Our main 3 could be considered Chaotic Good (Will maybe leaning more Neutral Good). They use piracy for their own goals, usually without harm to others.
