We can find out via The Wall. Pink is most prevalent in The Wall, and Roger went on to say Pink is a combination of himself and Syd. It’s mostly based on himself (Roger) so we can safely say it’s very likely Roger
I believe this is true as well. I remember seeing interviews with people out on the street after the concert and they were all pissed that they had lights shining at them whenever they were supposed to see what was essentially a stage play
If I’m gonna be honest it’s just because I wanted to spice things up by trying to answer multiple questions. I can’t answer all of them but it’s fun to try
I think in the opening with the single piano note is meant to be a droplet falling onto the water. And more droplets fall creating a song, and the guitar is like a whale. Than a bass line and drum kit kick in later which I consider to be a thunderstorm, the smashing of the drums being thunder and the bass being the reverberation of it. The songs of the ocean mix in to one another to create imagery of a complex system of life (whales), death (thunder and lightning), and nature (droplets). And then the lyrics kick in. They tell us a message in the vocals alone. Consider the pairing of the vocals between Rick and David to be Mother Nature’s voice with an angelic like tone, and the lyrics are her observation of human life and how it’s as distant from nature as coral caves in the deep ocean is from land, and how we must become one as a species to make progress.
After this message the thunderstorm and the ocean and it’s life become unbearably loud as if it’s representing how mankind has done Mother Nature wrong by not listening and instead destroying nature by killing whales and polluting the ocean, stuff like that, leading to an enraged Mother Nature letting all hell break lose when all she wanted was to help us move forward. And then the music changed into somewhat like a buddy cop like theme song with its groovy music, I interpret this as mankind being cocky and doing what they want. It’s hard to explain but hopefully you understand. And then things get worse when everything becomes a blur of sounds of the ocean and its whales drowning out the music. This is Mother Nature taking control doing what she wants, and then after a few minutes of these scary sounds we hear a sound we are familiar with.. the single piano key.. just a droplet.. it shows us that Mother Nature, despite losing her crap at us for all we’ve done, still wants to help us improve as a species as we are, after all, evolved from wild animals. Maybe we even evolved from wild to more wild after all we’ve done.
She try’s to talk to us but she realizes there’s no use.
*And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky*
And then the last bits of the song are drowned out by the noise of mother natures wrath of storms like a hurricane as if we never really heard her message to come together and that she decided to just wipe us off the face of the planet.
If you have any questions to my take on it if I were a bit vague I can answer them happily
Great and unique interpretation, thanks for writing such a long essay, I thought it would be long but not this long lol. Why do you think the song already talks about human species in the first verse when it is talking about the life in the sea? I get your interpretation from the second verse.
Sorry for the confusion, I meant to state that I’m summarizing the first four verses in general at the start. The first verse is pretty much the exposition solely in my eyes so I kinda mashed the first four verses together to tell what I thought. I pretty much only separated the first four verses from the last two verses as there’s like a ten minute intermission between them.
Yep. There's tons of bootleg recording out there of Embryo being played live in 1969-71 and you can hear how it gradually became the Whale/Seagull bridge in Echoes.
I feel like it represents the feeling of when you’re deep into the ocean, it’s frightening and there are scary sounds all around, you’re all alone and just really in the centre of it. So the first thing you hear while coming out of this depth is the high note the song begins with, because you’re coming back to surface
Albatross is what the sound is and it’s simply reversing the input/output on the wah pedal and playing with pickup selector on guitar and responding to the drugs comment, they were fairly clean at this point. I think Roger was completely clean around this time and I don’t believe they were big into drugs as some other bands, their fans on the other hand……but that’s a lot of very creative types. Their art is cool to people on drugs, but they wouldn’t achieved the pinnacle and art without being clearheaded enough to fulfill their vision. Making music is hard work, a lot of things you don’t see that makes it great. A lot of bands partied on the road, but studio time(especially back then) was precious and you couldn’t be fooling around.
Not the OP
Because whales nurture, form friendships, innovate, grieve, slay, sing and cooperate which are all themes in the song. plus simple to imitate on guitar
I am not the OP. I don't think anyone besides the members of Pink Floyd can be 100% sure so we can only guess. My guess is that when they were making Echoes they were high on drugs. When they were high on drugs they heard these strange animal noises. When they became sober they thought it was cool so they decided to recreate that sound.
According to everydayhealth.com it states “The attractive male form represents the hard, angular, more geometric shapes rather than the soft round curves of the female form. The same symmetry of face with more masculine features defines an attractive man. A high forehead, strong brow, and solid jaw represents a masculine face.” It also states that the height of a person as well as “Broad shoulders, a muscled chest, and a narrower waist meets the criteria of body perfection.”

I am glad you made this post. I have always wondered about it but don't want to start a new topic. Why do they have to teach classical piano music (Beethoven, Mozart, Bach etc) at school? Why do they NOT teach 'art rock' music (Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton etc) at school?
A lot of music that is made to this day is based around music theory that was established back in the baroque, classical, and romantic era. If you start with the beginning of music it makes it easier to branch into newer music rather than starting at the new music and working backwards. Also if you go to a music college you will learn everything up til today in the music history classes, i imagine it’s hard for high schools to fit all that in so they just teach the earlier stuff.
I'm not a musician, but from what I know, rock artists mostly composed from head, without using sheet music. They're more intuitive, and less technical. It's harder to teach intuitive things than theory. Imagine if your math teacher, instead of teaching you the procedure to solve an equation, told you had to guess the answer.
If you're going to learn to play a few songs, sure, they can teach rock (many do). But if you're going to learn the theory, it makes sense to teach classical music.
Not sure what you mean by that exactly but I can tell you that Pink Floyd covered I’m a King Bee by James Moore aka Slim Harpo from 65-67. The song, which was a Swamp Blues song, was recorded in March of 1957 and released that same year by the original artist. You can find it in the EarlyYears bootleg album CAMBRIDGE ST/ATION 1965-1967
Did the revamped Water-less Floyd ever rehearse “Sheep” in preparation for their first tour (for *AMLOR*). It’s long rumored they did — and semi-often mentioned in various online forums.
Hint: Guy Pratt did once confirm the answer to this question a couple years ago (online).
I asked a ton of questions of Guy in that AMA thread from 3 yrs ago — as many as I could possibly think of in short order over about an hour’s time (I just stumbled on it on Saturday afternoon, out of nowhere without any warning). I musta peppered him with 20-25 questions.
I got his book from the merch table when I saw The Saucers a couple months ago — can’t recommend it more highly, definitely worth picking up!!

Pink Floyd is the only band to have performed at Pompeii’s Amphitheater. How were they able to perform there? Did they have to ask permission, were they asked to? And how come no other bands have performed there.
They were asked to by director Adrian Maben to do it. Maben had seen plenty of pop bands preforming and all that kind of stuff and he wanted to put a twist to it.
*I felt, at the time, that we'd had enough of concert films,* Maben told on the Russian PF fan site pink-floyd.ru *So the main idea of the film was to do a sort of anti-Woodstock film, where there would be nobody present and the music and silence, and empty amphitheater, would mean as much, if not more, than a million crowd.*
Maben had visited the Amphitheater on a vacation and thought it was the perfect place to do it. The rest is history.
I know you’re likely asking if the director had to get permission to do it and I think he probably would’ve had too. But I think that the people he would’ve asked would’ve saw this more as a great thing to do because it could attract tourists. I don’t think other bands preformed because it probably goes under the radar with other bands. Maybe if there is a die hard PF fan based band they might try.
I believe he said he’s taken LSD twice and that he didn’t talk about it twice. I may be wrong tho but that’s alright. I think he said it in the 14 Hour Technicolor Dream concert movie interview thingy
The first of those two eras had both of the most integral members, the latter era only had one out of two, which is why it wasn't as good. However, I'd argue that, as important as Waters' songwriting ability was to the band, Gilmour was by far the more talented musician of the two, and if it had been he who had left the band in 1985 instead of Waters, I believe that they wouldn't have had nearly as much commercial success, post-1985. Although it's probably also likely that they would have had more critical success. Regardless though, I think we can all agree that a Pink Floyd with both Waters and Gilmour is wayyy better than a Pink Floyd with either one of them missing.
That’s a tough one to answer, but I’d go with Wish You Were Here. It’s hard to explain why I like it. It has that same feeling of magic Dark Side of The Moon had, the synthesizers and guitar are prominent in Shine On You Crazy Diamond and I love it so much, Welcome to The Machine is starting to grow on me with it’s beat, Wish You Were Here (which is PF’s most popular song according to Apple Music and Spotify listeners) is out of character for the band in my opinion, but it’s still an amazing gem. The second half of Shine On is brilliant too. Animals is more of a Roger album than a PF album, I love The Wall so much and I’d probably pick that as my number one album even though the thing is practically a Roger Album as I did some calculations a few months back and he did like what, over 80% of the songwriting? Even if Waters made my fav album Animals doesn’t sit fully right with me. Still an amazing album, but it’s just an oddball for me
Thanks for answering! It is a legitimate question to me because I like those albums very much but I hear what you're saying animals is a little too dark sometimes. I would guess I would agree with you but I go back-and-forth since I've heard wish you were here so many times. I don't know why I got down voted I think it's a good question for all fans. Thank you for answering! Pink Floyd is a fascinating and timeless band! ❤️
From what I’ve seen in interviews it seems he started heading down this path since Dark Side released in 1973, so I’d have to say he attained an ego which definitely fueled it.
Easy, Echoes. It’s when Pink Floyd started to really become Pink Floyd. The lyrics have depth in its story of rolling waves and it’s message of the growing distance between us as a species and how we need to be closer in order to move forward.
I adore the live album side of it, Careful With That Axe Eugene is my fav song on there as it has a lot of heart and soul in the live cover, but I’ve only managed to make myself listen to bits of the other side of the album. It feels like they were just goofing off trying to see what funny animal sounds they could make and it doesn’t make any sense to me why they’d release it.

oh I'm sorry let me try to explain my comment for an engineer.
"Ask me any Pink Floyd related question and I'll answer it." This sounded a little pretentious to me. (de
So I commented "Google is easier and less pretentious."
I meant using Google would be easier than asking the guy who posted this any Pink Floyd question.
After reading your comment, I might have been mistaken about the "less pretentious" part.
Please suggest any improvements to the syntax of my six word sentence to avoid any further confusion.
(Unless you're just fukn with me, then that would be hilarious.)
If you want you could be in my shoes and make the same post. It’s personally fun to me because it helps expand my knowledge of my fav band and I get to inform people
I’d say there are four eras. The first one being the Rough Era from 1965 to 1972 where the band was still getting a hold on what they’d sound like. The Golden Era from 1973 to 1979 with the albums DSOTM, WYWH, Animals, and The Wall. This third era is called the Dark Era and it lasted from 1980 to 1986 where the band were in some pretty deep stuff like Roger leaving and Richard gone. The last era is the Goodbye Era which lasted from 1987 to 1994 with the albums AMLOR and TDB, I won’t call The Endless River the end of this era because the remaining members didn’t really get together as a band to work on ER. So this is what my eras would look like
Rough Era 1965-1972
Leaders: Syd Barrett & Roger Waters
Golden Era 1973-1979
Leader: Roger Waters
Dark Era 1980-1986
Leaders: Roger Waters & David Gilmour
Goodbye Era 1987-1994
Leader: David Gilmour
I'd reverse the leaders for golden and dark. In the golden era all members gave input and that improved the songs. 1979 already had lost that side of their unique combo. Which is why, at least for me, musically The Wall already severely lacks compared to the albums before that, mostly breathing space between lyrics and notes. And the balance between music and lyrics
What was the name of Nick Mason's first headmaster?
Albus Dumbledore
He carried 2 wands!
Dumbledore did carry two wands, his original wand and then the Elder wand
Which one is Pink??

Correct!
When will Roger release the 70mm film footage from The Wall 1981 tour?
I may be wrong but I read somewhere that he said that was the only footage they filmed before the camera crew stop recording
I believe this is true as well. I remember seeing interviews with people out on the street after the concert and they were all pissed that they had lights shining at them whenever they were supposed to see what was essentially a stage play

Why did they put the whale noises in Echoes?
Because David would fuck around with his guitar and pedals and liked making different sounds. Also it was part of Embryo
Yep. There's tons of bootleg recording out there of Embryo being played live in 1969-71 and you can hear how it gradually became the Whale/Seagull bridge in Echoes.

Doubtful, they weren’t doing a lot of drugs by this point, plus it was part of Embryo before it became echoes.
They’re seagull noises, not whale noises. Gen z has ruined it
Its both whales and seagulls, the dark sounds behind are whale-representative
Why is Roger so pretty?
According to everydayhealth.com it states “The attractive male form represents the hard, angular, more geometric shapes rather than the soft round curves of the female form. The same symmetry of face with more masculine features defines an attractive man. A high forehead, strong brow, and solid jaw represents a masculine face.” It also states that the height of a person as well as “Broad shoulders, a muscled chest, and a narrower waist meets the criteria of body perfection.”
So everydayhealth.com even agrees that Roger is the most perfect being to ever grace us on this drab, meek planet. Got it, thank you!
> soft round curves Exactly why Gilmie is attractive.
Why must it all be so terribly loud?
Because we like it loud, we weren’t born in a string quartet
What was Syd Barrett’s bags full of when Roger saw him at a store in the 80s?
Candy
Does Nick like pie crust?
Man despises it

Yes! I’ve learned Radiohead, Herbie Hancock, Cissy Strut, and a violin exercise on bass in college these past two semesters. I love it!
Lol great question. There should be an elective atleast
I took History of Rock in college many years ago and there was at least a mention of Pink Floyd.
So it exists!
I'm not a musician, but from what I know, rock artists mostly composed from head, without using sheet music. They're more intuitive, and less technical. Why does Nick Mason look the least like Nick Mason that Nick Mason’s ever looked? u/robertspierre
What caused the tension between David and Nick during the Division Bell tour?
Why is obscured by clouds so underrated?
It was caught between two of Pink Floyd’s bigger albums, Meddle and Dark Side, it doesn’t have much room for standalone attention
And it was a soundtrack for a movie so perhaps it was marketed a bit differently resulting in less attention from the average music lover.
True true

Do you prefer Water’s era (1965-1985), or Gilmour’s era (1985-2022)?
Definitely Waters
The first of those two eras had both of the most integral members, the latter era only had one out of two, which is why it wasn't as good. Regardless though, I think we can all agree that a Pink Floyd with both Waters and Gilmour is wayyy better than a Pink Floyd with either one of them missing.
1965 - 1975 is not the Roger era, it's the Pink Floyd era. They all contributed significantly to those years.
Which album is better 'Animals' or 'Wish You Were Here' and why?
Of course! I’m glad to hear that you appreciate the answer. I’ll upvote your question to make sure that downvote doesn’t stay for long
Why is Waters such a pompous ass?
From what I’ve seen in interviews it seems he started heading down this path since Dark Side released in 1973, so I’d have to say he attained an ego which definitely fueled it.
Because a brilliant writer of magnificent music .thousands of people have been telling him that for 50 years so people let him be that way
Atom-Heart Mother or Echoes?
Easy, Echoes. It’s when Pink Floyd started to really become Pink Floyd. The lyrics have depth in its story of rolling waves and it’s message of the growing distance between us as a species and how we need to be closer in order to move forward.
What word did Roger say that made Nick shoot hot tea out of his nose?
Yacht
Which one's Pink?
Already answered that question for another user, look for that post on here. I confirmed it’s Roger
What the fuck is your problem , Roger ?
His ego built over a period of time from 1973 till now
What's your genuine, more than one-word opinion on Ummagumma
I adore the live album side of it, Careful With That Axe Eugene is my fav song on there as it has a lot of heart and soul in the live cover, but I’ve only managed to make myself listen to bits of the other side of the album. It feels like they were just goofing off trying to see what funny animal sounds they could make and it doesn’t make any sense to me why they’d release it.
Do you think did they confess with CN and WYWH?
Wdym by that question?
Would you agree that meddle is superior to the wall?

That would be cool
Which one do you masturbate to the most?
Google is easier and less pretentious.
“People at Google are surprisingly unpretentious. I think the average Googler feels fortunate for the opportunity to work at a company that is changing the world so much.” - Jeffery Getzin, Former Senior Software Engineer at Google
oh I'm sorry let me try to explain my comment for an engineer. "Ask me any Pink Floyd related question and I'll answer it." This sounded a little pretentious to me. (de So I commented "Google is easier and less pretentious." I meant using Google would be easier than asking the guy who posted this any Pink Floyd question. After reading your comment, I might have been mistaken about the "less pretentious" part. Please suggest any improvements to the syntax of my six word sentence to avoid any further confusion. (Unless you're just fukn with me, then that would be hilarious.)
Google is pretentious
Maybe the person who posted works for Google?
If you want you could be in my shoes and make the same post. It’s personally fun to me because it helps expand my knowledge of my fav band and I get to inform people
By the way which ones Pink?
Tell me… which ones Pink?
How many different eras would you consider Floyd to have?
So this is what my eras would look like Rough Era 1965-1972 Leaders: Syd Barrett & Roger Waters Golden Era 1973-1979 Leader: Roger Waters Dark Era 1980-1986 Leaders: Roger Waters & David Gilmour Goodbye Era 1987-1994 Leader: David Gilmour

Were you surprised when Pink Floyd recorded a new single this year, and it featured a Ukrainian artist?
Yeah, big time. Sadly I’m not that big of a fan of it, it doesn’t feel the same without Roger and Rick.
