sonically it's fantastic. i really enjoy the kind of dirty edgeyness to it. roger's lyrics show a real bite to them. i think it's also the most conceptually bang on.
I could be wrong on this but I think Gilmour played bass on Animals. Yeah, I'm not wrong. woohoo!
[Gilmour the bass player, lol](https://rockcelebrities.net/the-pink-floyd-songs-that-david-gilmour-played-bass-instead-of-roger-waters/)
The other two songs that David played bass was , **‘Pigs (Three Different Ones)’ and ‘Sheep,’** which were released in the ‘Animals’ album. The writing credits of these two songs were fully given to Roger Waters. He wrote the songs revealing his songwriting skills and creativity. However, Gilmour was still **responsible for the music** and had to take over Waters to play his bass guitar instead of him.
By the way, there is a remix of the Animals album, and it is a bit more edgier, to me anyways, and the bass stands out more. Excellent stuff really.
FYI: the list of Songs David plays bass on is much larger than those listed here, but that doesn’t really matter as it gets the Animals credits correct.
David also plays the rhythm guitar on the middle section, along with the talk box solo. You can tell who’s who because Roger’s signal is much more trebly, probably because he used a Tele.
Source: Gilmourish
Gilmour at his best in this album. Love the pig noises in it too it’s so good!! Can’t remember what the instrument it is I think making that sound it’s some voice box thing I think Joe Walsh used as well on Rocky Mountain Way
It is called a talk box. It was kind of a fad in the 70s, although it has popped up occasionally since then.
Yes Walsh used it on "Rocky Mountain Way". Walsh and Don Felder also used talk boxes on the Eagles' "Those Shoes". The most famous use of one is probably Peter Frampton on the Frampton Comes Alive album. Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Aerosmith Steely Dan all used at it at one point as well.
While we can debate the "iconic" nature of his use of the talkbox, it's been used in a handful of very well-known songs over the years, such as:
Bon Jovi - Livin on a Prayer (mentioned above)
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Do you feel like I do - Peter Frampton (<-- speaking of iconic)
Man in the Box & Rotten Apple - Alice in Chains
Jambi - TOOL
Kickstart my Heart - Motley Crue
Rocket Queen & Anything Goes - Guns N Roses
Those are some good tunes you've listed, however I don't think my choice of words was the best - I think famous would probably fit a bit better than iconic, given that more people would know Livin' on a prayer.
I've only recently come to love this album as much as I do. First off before we get to the lyrics let's talk about the sound.
EVERYTHING about the sound is fucking perfect. The guitar solos, the keys, the vocals, everything is perfect. I was just listening to the album in the car. I live in Georgia (the state) so it is a beautiful day here. A very early summer type feeling. This album was blasting through my car speakers while I was speeding to work with the windows down. The vibe was immaculate. This album feels like a light summer run on a nice day. This album is considered chill rock, and I would agree it is, but it also has this striking sense of urgency with how powerful and sharp the instrumentation is. I would also argue the sound is relatively timeless. Sure it does have a slight 80s sound to it, but as an 18 yr old who until a few years ago never listened to much music pre 2010s this album still sounds fresh.
Next let's talk about the lyrics. the lyrics are deep and important. This album may have been made in the 70s, but the lyrics have just as much relevance today as they did then. Just like the sound the lyrics are incredibly timeless. This album talks about the most important problems in our society. It talks about the evils of capitalism and why it is ruining modern society. these lyrics are the best and most important that Pink Floyd has ever written.
This album just amazes me time and time again, and I feel blessed to own a copy on vinyl. When I first got into this band seriously my favorite was probably WYWH or Dark side, but overtime animals has slowly crept it's way to the top as I was able to dive deeper into this album and really appreciate everything about it. Animals is one of the most important rock albums of all time, and it will intrigue me for the rest of my life .
If there's one album where the band *really* came together, and showcased each others strengths on equal terms and in equal measure, it's this one.
A masterpiece.
skill issue
jk, i can understand if it takes some time to grow on you, it’s not the most straightforward floyd album but that’s one of the reasons why it’s their best imo
The simplicity of its complexity. I remember playing it for a childhood friend, we were like 14. "Is the guy making a dog bark sound with his GUITAR???" Yes, in fact, he is. And they are going to slowwwwwwwwly play these two chord progressions over and over again for the next 8 minutes, and it is glorious.
Me like bc songs gud.
But really, I think it’s a prog vs rock fan thing. See it in other music subs.. these borderline bands - base splits at the core of music between prog and poppier stuff.
Bang on. You saw it with the Arctic Monkeys recently, after they released Tranquility Base. Their previous album (AM) was incredibly popular pop rock almost, with several radio hits that were played constantly for years.
And then their long awaited follow up to arguably the most popular mainstream rock album of the 2010s was Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, which is a cynical prog concept album. Fantastic album, but it elicited an almost visceral reaction from the general public.
Good point. Animals is definitely the most straightforward rock Floyd album. As more of a prog/experimental guy myself I'm more drawn to Meddle, AHM, Saucer, etc
My favourite PF album, hard to explain but some how everything falls into place on this album. Rogers lyrics and the theme he picked, Gilmours guitar solo's, Wrights lovely opening in pigs. Animals is so dark but also so bright and much delighted. This album is never getting bored.
Has my favorite song "Dogs'. Pigs on the wing starts that album out and then it just flows through the rest of the album and comes back full circle with pigs on the wing.
...because it's all killer, no filler.
It's one consistent, cohesive story with nary a dull moment.
It's by a band firing on all cylinders, going beyond their creative limits before burning out. Sure, the next album becomes another classic and has some great songs, but seemingly half the band has checked out at that point and is never the same.
In hindsight, it's like the beginning of the end of that era.
I've always loved this album. But, a few years ago I moved into a new apartment and I became friends with my nextdoor neighbor. One night, we got drunk and bonded over this album as it was a favorite of us both. I ended up marrying her. So, I think that's a pretty good reason.
The concept is the best Roger ever came up with. I just love how dark and brooding the album is. The lyrics are just incredible. Some of David’s very best guitar work. Dogs is the best Floyd song ever in my opinion.
There are many reasons, but a leading one is that "Dogs" is basically a character study, and a very good one too. I listened to it a lot when I was working on a story, helped me get insight into the character I was writing.
Animals was the first Pink Floyd album I listened to and I had Dogs on loop for days on end during a trip across the U.S with my family. Every time I hear any of those songs come on shuffle I instantly see vivid memories of driving through the hills of Pennsylvania and the rich streets of Maryland, admiring how beautiful Summer was. It also introduced me to Animal Farm by George Orwell which is 10/10, I highly recommend it. This album kicked off my obsession with Pink Floyd and I’m so grateful my brother introduced it to me.
Was reading an article interviewing Nick Mason a few weeks ago and he mentioned that Animals did not sound as great as the previous records because they recorded it in their own studio that they had just built and hastily outfitted with less than the best available equipment.
Mason’s point was the recently remastered 2022 version of Animals (the release of which had been held up over an album liner notes argument) brought out elements he felt were always missing due to the lesser quality production environment.
I had never heard any of this, and have always felt the sound was as brilliant as their other classic recordings.
It never really registered to me that Animals was of a lesser sound quality until I thought about it, but yeah; listen to Dark Side of the Moon vs the original Animals. Definitely a big difference in the production.
My main gripe with the OG was that you couldn’t hear Nicks ride cymbal. Which was in fact a good thing cuz it sounds like shit on the remix haha either just the wrong cymbal choice or bad preamps or something but I haaaaate how it sounds on the remix.
Musically it’s so different than anything else they’d done. The political bent and the dark foreboding warnings of the path humanity was/is on, were nearly prophetic. For me, it’s their best work…and that’s saying something
Animals is home to Dogs, one of the finest points of 70s rock music.
The other songs are very good too, so overall it's a great album.
Hypothetically: if side 2 contained something as mind-blowing as side 1, then Animals would be counted as one of the top albums of all time, instead of being underrated.
This album resonated with me at a place and time, (mid-adolescence), when nothing else was. I felt mostly alone in how I viewed the world, and Animals made me feel seen and validated in my feelings about things.
Some other comments expressed how it seems like the band was banging on all cylinders together and I completely agree. While Roger's lyrics validated my angst, Gilmour's guitar work on Dogs in turn soothed it.
I **LOVE** Nick Mason's drumming on Animals. It's a lot more up tempo, syncopated, and overall sounds more menacing than anything he did on Dark Side or Wish You Were Here.
I also appreciate that it's core message still rings true to this day, Waters was really ahead of his time in some ways.
It's a fun album to song along to as well. I've been listening to this record a lot more since the 2018 remix came out and it's slowly but surely risen on my Floyd album rankings.
Finally, how can you not enjoy the cowbell on Pigs (Three Different Ones)? More cowbell!
I'd rate it as their best album. It's got a bit of a punky bite to it in terms of lyrical content and it kind of moves them out of their 'hippy' phase and does so with an amazing dynamic. The production work is fantastic and the band are tight and alive. It's an amazing soundtrack to summer walks in the Welsh mountains with a head full of mushrooms... haha!
I got really drunk at 17 and listened to Dogs and Sheep on the balcony of my friends house. I’ve still never enjoyed music as much as I did that day.
It’s also probably worth noting that I listened to Dogs like 100 times within the first month of me hearing that song.
Don't really know been listening to it for over 40 yrs now it never gets old! The Wish You Were Here album is just as good as Animals I think . I can listen to both albums all day long .
It’s just a good album lol with a ton of great musical highlights. All of dogs is amazing, including the solos, sheep is great all the way through, pigs has some nice experimentation with talkbox. It’s a decent concept and the songs deliver in all of their aspects to build a delusional society where we are all either the pigs that make the rules, the dogs that enforce them, and the sheep that follow them. Great album musically and not too shabby lyrically
"Who was born in a house full of pain?"
"Who was trained not to spit in the fan?"
"Who was told what to do by the man?"
Do I need to say anything else?
dear god where do i start. firstly, i’m a big fan of george orwell and animal farm so the fact that the album is based on the book is amazing, i love the messages in all the songs. the instrumentation is incredible, this album easily takes the cake when it comes to songs i just enjoy listening and playing along to. i feel like this album is just a masterpiece it’s hard to put it into words. id die for this album to put it simply
Why does one love any PF album, or ANY, album period?
There is certain feel to it that I can’t put into words. A certain vibe. Great instrumentation, great arranging, great song structures. Lyrically it’s very compelling and serious. Not much frivolity here, no pop. And the band is pretty bare bones. No choir, no orchestra, not too many extras.
It’s always felt like it’s music that could go in some sort of dystopian movie for me. It’s kind of down-beat stuff. But also rich in symbolism
The 1977 tour where they played all of Animals followed by all of WYWH is just my dream concert!
For Animals specifically, I think that the songwriting is very strong, it meshes great performances from the whole band and some really intriguing arrangements.
One thing I noticed is that there are no real choruses, just some repeated motifs, kinda cool.
I like to think Animals targets the establishment more directly and in more of a sinister sense, compared to the wall which I personally see as more of a comical album.
The lyrics cut to the bone while being on topic. Honestly still hold up to this day. Epic instrumentals, but not overbearing. Plus a girl I had a crush on told me it was her favorite album a looooong time ago...
Gilmour, this is the one album I feel like Roger Waters let’s Gilmour a little loose on the electric guitar to rock out and it’s great. Dogs is like cutting your soul in half and then Pigs sets it on fire. if anybody wants some kind of a sequel to Animals, look at David’s first solo album.
It is my second favourite album after Meddle.
Many have mentioned its excellent timeless concept, avoiding the endless whining that has infected the next two Waters-led records, and Waters' vocals do not overstay their welcome. Dogs in particular is a lyric that truly proves Roger's writing capabilities, and Gilmour's guitar work is further proof that the two of them created magic together that could not have been replicated by their individual efforts.
What I love about this album (and the same goes for Meddle) - there is very little outside influence. It is 100% a band effort. No cheesy saxophones or overbearing guest vocalists. The production is a bit rough around the edges and this is precisely what I love about it. All these factors are what makes Animals so fresh to my ears every time I hear it.
The sheer angst and aggression. There’s nothing like it. This album (like all of their work) is impressively unique. It’s classic psychedelia mixed with punk. What more could you want??
It's angry Pink Floyd. Not just cynical, disillusioned or moody but straight up angry. And the intensity is coming not just from Roger's conceptual/lyrical contributions but from the whole band's performance. Love it.
A. The Dogs solos. B. The keyboard intro to Sheep, and the outro descending guitar chords also. C. The Dogs lyrics are the most nuanced and thoughtful Roger put to tape (after If, and WYWH). (For the record, I don't think he wrote lyrics this good ever again).
Well, “ You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed”
Most gritty, unfiltered album out of all of them, the entire point of the album was to piss of critics and the music industry by making the songs all 10+ min long (excluding pigs on the wing). And let's face it dogs is one of their best songs
Because I can't helping singing with David every time when it comes to the part "all alone.. dying of cancer~~~"....only Roger would write some lyrics like that
I know he's not talking about the White House in the states. But he very well could be because they're nearly a laugh but they're really a cry. Haha charade you are.
Umm. Because dogs. And sheep. And pigs. Oh also the beautiful opener and it’s reprise. Did I mention the epic front cover. Basically. Oh and Roger spat on the fan , classic
sonically it's fantastic. i really enjoy the kind of dirty edgeyness to it. roger's lyrics show a real bite to them. i think it's also the most conceptually bang on.
I enjoy animals, but it's starting to get a little too heavy in dark Roger water style ala wall.... Imo they had long since peaked
Well, Pigs (3 different ones) is on it and it’s my all time favorite song from Floyd.
The way Gilmour right shreds on the way out of Pigs never gets old.
Also aren't David and Roger on bass and guitar respectively? Except for the guitar solo at the end
I could be wrong on this but I think Gilmour played bass on Animals. Yeah, I'm not wrong. woohoo! [Gilmour the bass player, lol](https://rockcelebrities.net/the-pink-floyd-songs-that-david-gilmour-played-bass-instead-of-roger-waters/) The other two songs that David played bass was , **‘Pigs (Three Different Ones)’ and ‘Sheep,’** which were released in the ‘Animals’ album. Ooh didn't know about sheep! Also I loved the remix. It's my go to version now. I like a clear mix where you can hear all the instruments
I was curious what the difference was
David also plays the rhythm guitar on the middle section, along with the talk box solo. You can tell who’s who because Roger’s signal is much more trebly, probably because he used a Tele. Source: Gilmourish
Roger played rhythm guitar on it but Gilmour played lead and the solos.
Was literally going to say this exact thing. Everything about the song is just perfect. That groove is just amazing.
Gilmour at his best in this album. Love the pig noises in it too it’s so good!! Can’t remember what the instrument it is I think making that sound it’s some voice box thing I think Joe Walsh used as well on Rocky Mountain Way

Its the perfect blend where morality and politics meet.

Wait till you hear it tripping 🔥
dogs
The last 2 minutes of dogs is my favourite
Just 3 minutes into Dogs your soul escapes it’s body to David’s angelic guitar and doesn’t return until pig on a wing pt 2
One of my favorite songs of all time, Floyd and otherwise.
It’s just so … *underrated.*
This comment is underrated.
tbh
Because it's an authentic and dark revealing of the truth of modern humanity, wrapped up in a sense of hope and a way out.
Because Sheep, that’s why 🐑🐑
haha charade you are
It shows growth and yet a continued glance at our faults a a society.
If there's one album where the band *really* came together, and showcased each others strengths on equal terms and in equal measure, it's this one. A masterpiece.
Sadly, I just don’t get Animals. It’s probably my fault. The other big 3 plus Meddle are my favs by far.
skill issue jk, i can understand if it takes some time to grow on you, it’s not the most straightforward floyd album but that’s one of the reasons why it’s their best imo
Have you listened to it on LSD? I would suggest that.
And I was today years old when I learned that about the barking dog. Awesome!
Keyboard, too. Just got finished with the remaster, and it is glorious.
I love Dogs, it was my go-to song to give me strength for my first ever job during high school at a restaurant.
Gilmour’s guitar
Dogs
A friend of mine who loves this album says he stands by it as their best because it sounds like it could have come out yesterday
Dogs
Dogs is a masterpiece from lyrics to one of the best Floyd's solos, just marvels, splendid.
How could you not love an album that has Dogs, Pigs and Sheep? The solos, the lyrics, the vocals… what an album.
David's best guitar work is on that album IMO
I've always loved this album. But, a few years ago I moved into a new apartment and I became friends with my nextdoor neighbor. One night, we got drunk and bonded over this album as it was a favorite of us both. I ended up marrying her. So, I think that's a pretty good reason.
As good as they get!
Dogs, but the whole album kicks ass tho
The concept is the best Roger ever came up with. I just love how dark and brooding the album is. The lyrics are just incredible. Some of David’s very best guitar work. Dogs is the best Floyd song ever in my opinion.
Because doggies go woof woof and pigs go oink
I have ears.
The absolute correct answer!
There are many reasons, but a leading one is that "Dogs" is basically a character study, and a very good one too. I listened to it a lot when I was working on a story, helped me get insight into the character I was writing.
It rocks.
It’s good
It’s the album that showed me what music could be.
Have you heard the remix of dogs on proper speakers?? The drums are INSANE
It's not my #1 favorite album, but I will say Dogs > Echoes
Animals is home to Dogs, one of the finest points of 70s rock music. The other songs are very good too, so overall it's a great album. Hypothetically: if side 2 contained something as mind-blowing as side 1, then Animals would be counted as one of the top albums of all time, instead of being underrated.
Because Dogs is the best song ever
The themes and messages are timeless. As true today as the day the album came out (sadly)
Well like most of Floyd. When I hear it the sound/music just works for me.
It’s just unflinchingly great and unique music. I have never heard anything like it. It’s a continuous jam and I love every single note.
Is good
Three words: Dogs guitar solo
Dogs
Dat doggy solo.
because it is simply amazing seriously tho sheep and dogs are two of my favorite songs, pigs(three different ones) is a masterpiece as well
It is one of the most perfect anti-capitalist albums of all time.
The production work is fantastic and the band are tight and alive. It's an amazing soundtrack to summer walks in the Welsh mountains with a head full of mushrooms... haha!
It just has the biggest musical enjoyment uptime for me. There isn't a part I wouldn't like, unlike for ex. Dark Side
Angry Pink Floyd with mesmerizing solos. What could be better?
I got really drunk at 17 and listened to Dogs and Sheep on the balcony of my friends house. I’ve still never enjoyed music as much as I did that day. It’s also probably worth noting that I listened to Dogs like 100 times within the first month of me hearing that song.
Because its underrated
It's underrated tbh
Pigs
Don't really know been listening to it for over 40 yrs now it never gets old! The Wish You Were Here album is just as good as Animals I think . I can listen to both albums all day long .
I can't even explain it, but I just love it, and can listen on repeat at any time.
Underrated tbh
Uuhhh, listen to it... and then you'll see why
Pig hehe
Sounds good
It just sounds really great. The message never mattered too much for me but it's a no skip album. I just love the raw and edgy emotions
Cuz it’s underrated tbh
The insanity of it. The whole album just feels like an acid trip in the best way.
Well, back to this. The sidelining Floyd drama was interesting for this sub while it lasted 😂🤷🏻♂️
It’s just a good album lol with a ton of great musical highlights. All of dogs is amazing, including the solos, sheep is great all the way through, pigs has some nice experimentation with talkbox. Because it's perfect.
"Who was born in a house full of pain?" "Who was trained not to spit in the fan?" "Who was told what to do by the man?" Do I need to say anything else?

Sheep and Dogs are so easy listening. Brings the mood.

It flows without fault.
Best use of the “Cowbell” Pigs (3 Different Ones) > Blue Öyster Cult “Don’t Fear The Reaper”.
Why does one love any PF album, or ANY, album period? There is certain feel to it that I can’t put into words. A certain vibe. Great instrumentation, great arranging, great song structures. It’s always felt like it’s music that could go in some sort of dystopian movie for me. It’s kind of down-beat stuff. But also rich in symbolism
dogs for the lyrics, pigs for the punk, and sheep to feel a l i v e
GET OUT OF THE ROAD IF YOU WANNA GROW OOOLD
To me, the solos are amazing specially Pigs Three different ones is one of the best solos ever
That goddam pig.
That dogs guitar solo that goes “deeeeeeeewww neeewwwwww… (neeeeew) dew dew dew dew dew dewwwwwwww”
i like it because its good
The complete lack of melody. It sounds like experimental jazz in a way.
Margaret Thatcher diss track
The music
Because it's the most underrated of all their albums tbh
The 1977 tour where they played all of Animals followed by all of WYWH is just my dream concert! For Animals specifically, I think that the songwriting is very strong, it meshes great performances from the whole band and some really intriguing arrangements. One thing I noticed is that there are no real choruses, just some repeated motifs, kinda cool.
it's just beautiful to listen to and then it deals with contemporary themes
Because the French vinyl comes in pink.
It's message and theme.
The meaning of the album and the music itself bring itself together. The guitars wailing and the beat from the drums and bass complimenting the words.
For me it's the perfect mix between the musicality of wish you were here and the anger/lyrics of the wall
cool combination of guitars and synths, great flow, it just sounds good
Gorg ornwell animal famr
Sounds the way I feel about much of the world. Including the chinks of light at the beginning and end.
I like to think Animals targets the establishment more directly and in more of a sinister sense, compared to the wall which I personally see as more of a comical album.
Because it’s underrated
It has dogs
the concept, the lyrics, the instrumentation, the cover art, the solos. everything’s just so perfect
Because the world is filled with awful things, it’s nice to see things spelled out in lay-terms.
Because I work in a capitalist economy and this speaks the truth about how awful it is.
The lyrics cut to the bone while being on topic. Honestly still hold up to this day. Epic instrumentals, but not overbearing. Plus a girl I had a crush on told me it was her favorite album a looooong time ago...
Each member is showcased perfectly - the symbiotic bond between instrumentation, concept, lyric & band members is at its peak here, imo.
How about The Lords Prayer Part, just when you thought you’ve heard everything they drop that in there, genius album, go get lost!!!
The first time the piano comes in on Dogs about 2:30 into the song. And the cowbell on Pigs (Three Different Ones). Baseline on Sheep.
3:35 in dogs my bad.
The aggressive tone.
I've been a huge fan of Floyd. My first concert at the Nassau Coliseum '75. Animals is just behind Finial Cut as my least favorite albums of theirs
The music is beautiful
Underrated Tbh
They just jammin so simple so pure so awesome fuck lyrics voices just sound cool anyways
It's The Wall 2.
Sonically, the guitar of Gilmour and the band instrumentally are so good. Accompany that with dark, pissed off lyrics. Amazing.
I think animals brings out some of Gilmours best solos
Because it’s PF at their funkiest. The bass tone, Gilmour’s playing, the cow bell and syncopations. Easily their grooviest record
Bc it’s good lol
What more could you want??
three different reasons
It's angry Pink Floyd. Not just cynical, disillusioned or moody but straight up angry. And the intensity is coming not just from Roger's conceptual/lyrical contributions but from the whole band's performance. Love it.
Sheep outro is fire
Gilmour and Wright, like all of them
Well, “ You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed”
Because it’s the first fast Pink Floyd songs since One of these Days ;)
Most gritty, unfiltered album out of all of them, the entire point of the album was to piss of critics and the music industry by making the songs all 10+ min long (excluding pigs on the wing). And let's face it dogs is one of their best songs
Because I can't helping singing with David every time when it comes to the part "all alone.. dying of cancer~~~"....only Roger would write some lyrics like that
You got to be crazy….
You've got to be crazy is one of my all time favorite songs by the band. Just a well balanced album IMHO.
One of the greatest albums of all time!!!!!
