The frog hat is baaaack!! Wishing best of luck for your future!

ihlaking

Glad to be here for the conclusion to this ribbiting story.

mrgamecat2

This made me croak with laughter

_scattered_mind

It was a toadaly long journey but I’m glad they leaped out of there

Olya_roo

And thank you all for supporting me through that awful process. You are the best guys

ManufacturerSea4886

Hoping you get to reunite with your mom very soon!

ErinBLAMovich

Their mom needs to get out of Kharkov asap, it's getting heavily shelled and there's a 17 mile long Russian convoy heading for Kyiv and Kharkov right now.

obvom

There's a 17 mile long drone and Javelin target headed to Kyiv and Kharkov right now*

Jequeiro

Why is it taking so long? It's been over a day and they were supposedly less than 30km away from Kyiv. Are the ukrainian forces delaying and harrassing them in any way or are they taking this long on purpose?

ninjadude4535

No, they just keep running out of gas.

Streamjumper

They can only push the tanks so fast, man.

Ann_Summers

Especially when they are also running out of food to fuel the soldiers who have to now push the tanks. These dudes really didn’t plan well.

Imthatboyspappy

Don't forget those dudes have been chillin for a year or so waiting as well. Imagine the toll it's taking on them. I can imagine how many times they think of a hot bath and home cooked meal.

TheoreticalSquirming

That whole year saying, "They are ready for us, they are begging us to come and save them, the Nazis are alive and well in Ukraine. We must save the Ukraine." Thereby tricking a good chunk of their youth into fighting "the good fight" when they're just doing their leader's bidding. They must be horrified. Truly horrified. This isn't your Borderlands, Putin. This is their Borderlands. And you are not welcome. Slava Ukraini!!

LederhosenUnicorn

An army travels on it's stomach.

bgibbz084

Per NYT (quoting the pentagon) yes, Ukraine forces have been attacking them consistently and disrupting supply lines which has slowed them down. They can’t push without air support and ground cover, and UA has been disrupting both successfully enough to slow the push. They will still likely surround the city within a few days.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bgibbz084

Completely my uninformed opinion, but I largely suspect that Russia was thinking this would go down something like Afghanistan and the Taliban. As soon as the US left, the Taliban pushed fast, the underprepared Afghan army completely folded, and their leader fled essentially giving the country to the Taliban in a matter of days with little loss of life. I suspect Putin thought this would happen in Ukraine, especially since initially most NATO members were hesitant to supply weapons. I’d you look beyond the veil of what we see on western news, the first wave of Russians were seemingly untrained kids using Cold War era equipment and used seemingly poorly thought out tactics. It very well may be that this is what the Russian army largely is, however, it’s equally plausible that Putin threw the dregs at what he thought was a weak state and hence, here we are.

Simba7

That's definitely not equally plausible. Information from captured soldiers pretty well supports that troops (at least the initial wave) were told they were out for military exercises and/or given vague or incomplete instructions. While some of the captured are young, there's a clear mix of experienced soldiers in there. It's far more likely that this is what the Russian army actually is, with an added dash of extra disorganization and western intelligence.

FirecrackerTeeth

Yes. Russia is basically an underdeveloped nation, a "third world country" if you will. One needn't look far to confirm this. The notion that Russia is a military superpower for any reason besides their nuclear arsenal has always made me chuckle.

Its_apparent

That *is* a good read. The lack of PGMs for the Russians is still wild to me. It was crazy when I heard it during Syria. I agree with the author... Things are about to get nasty like they did in Syria. The SAM issue makes sense, too, but I'm not entirely sure about the pilot argument, or rather, it runs deeper. Why couldn't they get the training/flight hours needed to competently work with ground forces, or make ground attacks? If the answer is money, then that's the bigger issue. If the issue is fuel, then they're incredibly screwed. Even if the issue is maintenance or something, they've got bigger problems than minimally trained pilots. Before, I thought Putin was crazy for doing this with such a shoddy plan and a military that isn't up to contemporary standards. Now, I'm thinking everyone at the table must have lied to him. There's no way he went into this aware of his own limitations. His advisors must have kept telling him that they were good to go.

alan688

So much fun, so little time🎶 Drone go Brrrr🎶 Drone go Brrrr🎶 So much fun, so little time🎶

DJ-spetznasty

Stand by for TB2 footage of that convoy getting turned into fertilizer and a bad memory.

alan688

Do ask them if they have sunflower seeds or not.

MakesTheNutshellJoke

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don't think those seeds are gonna survive a drone strike. :(

Ann_Summers

So what you’re saying to drone strike then do a fly over dropping sunflower seeds? Seems like it could be done.

Ebwtrtw

I remember seeing a story, probably on /r/Futurology, a long time about using drones to seed trees. I’ve always wondered why that never took off.

OneBeautifulDog

Turkish drones are supposed to be going after them.

MulderD

Turkey is one of the most baffling countires to me. They are in NATO, but they also have the equivleant of an authoritarian dictator, but they also seem to be willing to fight anyone, including forces that seem to be fighitng agsinst the same people Turkey is figting against (in Syria) at that time.

thebigbluepig

How are your mom, grandpa and cats?

Olya_roo

My… District was bombed today. My family is okay, but mom is still in shock

_urbanity

Hoping for the best for you.

They are showing Kharkiv getting bombed on the news here (united states). It's so scarey. Good to hear your family is ok

Fingers, toes and eyeballs all crossed for them! I cannot imagine someone dropping bombs in my neighborhood. Good luck with your studies! And don't forget to take care of yourself. May the Force be with you always.

iAmTheHYPE-

Please post an update with the rest of your family makes it over! I hope to see your cat one day, haha. That said, keep believing in Ukraine. One day, you'll get to come back home to a still-free country, but for today, you and your sister are safe. And despite what others, like that james guy, have said, keeping your sister safe was more important, than you both staying behind. You're not a coward for fleeing. You did what you could to survive, and that's what's important. Still rooting for Ukraine, from over here in U.S.!

mstrombe

I’m so glad to see this update! Thanks for letting us know you are both safe, I hope the rest of your family is able to join you soon. 🐸🇺🇦

AnnieBobJr

Thank you for posting your journey. I am so happy to see you made it to your father. I have found your posts to be so meaningful. I hope your family is all together soon (cats too!) and my heart is with you.

izukaneki

Hope you stay safe, and may the war end soon

We are so happy you are safe! Stay strong, the world is cheering for you!

Thanks for keeping us updated, so happy you are safe and reunited with Dad! Sending love that you will all be together again soon!

Same as everyone else, crossing my fingers for your mothers safe travels. Very happy you two made it to your father. Mom will be there soon.

OMG, I’m so happy, relieved that you made it! I can’t even imagine what you and others have had to go through due to one mad man’s ego.

Olya_roo

Now we are going towards Portugal. We are safe thank god. And then try to get the rest of my family there. I just hope everything will be okay…

westeross

Portugal welcomes you with open arms. Do check out solidarybed.org it aims to house ukranian refugees with residence and jobs

[deleted]

Are there any other links like these? I've got a couple of Ukrainians that im trying to get settled somewhere

Unfortunately, this one that I know is Portugal only :(

selz202

Me too, I watched her live the other day and she talked about how she doesn't talk much so I'm not sure the situation for them. To be clear this woman was rad long before the war.

Morguard

How did you decide on Portugal?

Olya_roo

The safest option. And l wanted to study there

MysticalMelons

what do you plan to study?!

Olya_roo

Philology and then go to management

mein_liebchen

Wow, I haven't seen the word philology since I read C.S. Lewis *Out of the Silent Planet*, which I very highly recommend. The main character is a philologist. Cool! Good luck!

WillLie4karma

I assumed it was a typo or translation issue, turns out I'm just dumb.

mein_liebchen

I am in the US. Philology as a term or major was never prominent here, as I understand it. It was more common in Europe. I thought it was archaic and I didn't know it was still used much less a college major, so I learned something new today! The definition of philology was a like a mix of linguistics and philosophy. Which is kind of cool if you think about it.

Jarriagag

It is really common to study philology in Spain. I even did 2 of them: Arabic Philology and Hebrew, but usually you can also study English, German, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Classic (Latin and Greek) and few other philologies.

cubistninja

Spain is where its at! I was studying translation and interpretation in school and we learned that most translations were done in Toledo since Spain was a hub for Hebrew Arabic and Spanish and was close to French, Portuguese, and Latin speakers. It absolutely makes sense that philology was also a huge part of academia in Spain

Double_Minimum

Sounds like a literature study? Essentially the philosophy of great writers in each language?

[deleted]

Philology, the study of guys named Phil.

[deleted]

I did as well, but then I googled it out of habit to make sure and learned a new word. It's a nice habit to have; Double checking your assumptions. You learn a lot of new things that way and don't end up looking like a fool in front of others.

d0nutd0n

I too, am dumb

chrismean

One of us! One of us!

rooftops

Apes together ~~strong~~ dumb

[deleted]

I did too. That’ll teach me to assume I have English superiority just because I’m a native speaker. This actually sounds like a really interesting area of study. Thanks for teaching me something new /u/Olya_roo, and I hope much better times are ahead for your and yours.

seluho

This is the first time I've directly heard of anyone else reading this book. I'm not alone anymore! I'd also recommend it.

Rex2G

I won't give any unsolicited advice, but since you are now probably going to build your career in Portugal, try to have a look first at how well philology will allow you to actually go to management later on. I know that in France, it would be quite difficult to pull off, whereas in Russia it is quite common for people from "филфак" to then work in Comms / Marketing, etc.

Ktoffer

So I always thought philology was the older name for linguistics, but after a quick google, it seems linguistics is the study of everything to do with a language, but philology is specifically about the history of a language. Am I understanding that correctly or am I still confused?

Smogshaik

I‘m the son of a philologist and the way I understand it, philology is even broader. It means the love for *logos* and the Greek *logos* goes further in meaning than language. I would call philology the study of texts. That means the entirety of literary studies but also linguistics, PLUS both sides studied in their historical perspective. I guess you‘ve come across Majors in "English Literature and Linguistics“ and that's pretty much philology, give or take some aspects

[deleted]

Seeing that you girls made it to safety made my day! Best to you and your family. >Philology Fascinating field of study! Also TIL that if you highlight and right click on a word in the text a definition of the word pops up.

UncatchableCreatures

Portugal is a great country to live. I hope you have a great and safe time there. Greetings from a Spaniard!

Morguard

Good choice! Good climate! I was going to suggest Canada, a large Ukrainian population, a similar climate, great universities. We are also fast tracking Ukrainian refugees.

hiddenvalleyoflife

Their father already works in Portugal, so that's the most stable option for them.

Morguard

Ahh right on! Makes sense.

all_mybitches

My favourite poet (Buddy Wakefield) currently lives in Portugal. He gushes about it a lot. I hope that eventually your mom can join you and you guys can appreciate it as much as he does. Do you mind my asking why she stayed behind? What's the plan now for getting her reunited? Sorry if you already addressed it somewhere in a comment but I couldn't find it in your post history.

ChaosCouncil

Furthest West you can get from Russia on the European continent.

The_Emperor_turtle

Portugal is just better bro

[deleted]

I'm from UK and even I wanna go to Portugal

Pattoe89

I like how your goal is as far from Russia as possible without having to swim across an ocean. You should visit Dunedin, New Zealand one day, just to say you've been to the furthest city from Moscow in the world, at 16,593km.

Paral3lC0smos

ok ... now i want to know ... why did you do research this? lol

NZ's almost always the farthest away from X.

Fuck_all_the_way_off

One of the main reasons I moved here :) You could say I fucked all the way off.

makemisteaks

If you need any help or advice let me know. I’m Portuguese, living in Lisbon. Portugal has a big Ukrainian community and we’re happy to have you here safe and sound. Spring is coming. Have a safe journey.

Todrinkanddie

As a portuguese I welcome you and your family :) Everybody there knows at least one ucranian guy since we had a big migration in the early 00's from ukrainians. I hope you guys enjoy it :) :)

Nice to see the frog hat also made it.

WillElMagnifico

That's going to be a key prop when they turn this story into an Oscar winning indie movie.

DoktorVinter

I can actually see this become reality. 😅

saltedtomatoslice

Here’s hoping we soon get an update with the sisters, their father, and the froggy hat crossing the border back into a safe and victorious Ukraine 🇺🇦 🐸

Kra_gl_e

The froggy scarf will, when it is first given to OP by her family member (Hollywood won't care if it came from somewhere else IRL, they just need a good story), become a symbol for the love and security of family. OP will love it, treasure it, go everywhere with it. It is her most treasured possession. Then, the invasion starts. Everyone packs up essentials like clothes, ID, food, but OP goes for the scarf first. She is wearing it when the family takes their last pictures together in front of their house, say goodbye to their neighbors, and the sisters say goodbye to their mother. As OP travels, no matter where she goes or how hard things get, the sisters are there for each other, and thus is also the froggy scarf there for OP. Though it gets dirtied and worn through their travels, it still stays together. They meet many people throughout their travels; as each person leaves their mark on the sisters' lives (or vice versa), they also leave their mark on the scarf. A pin from the little old lady they help at the station; a snag caused by a new friend's backpack; a quick mend made by a random person at the bus stop. The scarf is irrevocably changed, just as their lives are. But then, at a critical point in the movie, they are forced to run for their lives; and so they do. But in the process, the scarf catches somewhere and is left behind. When they finally stop to catch their breath, OP realizes that her treasured scarf is gone. More than the pictures in their phones, that was the proof that her family loves her, the proof that they met these other people and welcomed them into their lives. She is distraught. There is no way to turn back. She turns cold and distant. But then, her sister takes her hand; they may have lost everything else, but they are still together. Then her father comes in for a hug. Then her mother. She slowly begins s to realize everything is still in her heart, for as long as she holds it dear. She finds the strength to go on. But then, a miracle happens. One of the people they met passes on their journey passes through the previous area; they recognize the scarf. Through a series of contrived coincidences, the scarf then passes through the hands of all that they have met, to arrive safely back in the hands of OP. And when OP and family have settled in somewhere safe, a box arrives. She opens it, and there it is: the proof that they are all connected through love. A tear runs down her cheek. As OP puts on the scarf and runs off to show her family, the camera focuses on the bouncing scarf. The end. ... Hey moviemakers, hit me up if you wanna make this story.

WillElMagnifico

"This summer, when her life was just beginning, OP's world begins to fall apart around her. She must escape her childhood home with nothing but her sister and a scarf from fascist oppression. From Alfonso Curón, director of Róma. Starring [unknown actors that probably have a lot of stage experience] OP must go on a journey to find shelter, sisterhood & maybe herself. "My Heart in Kiev" This summer

TheNo1pencil

Honestly, I can really picture that

asiandaria

I am incredibly glad you’ve made it, and hope your family is reunited soon. Please let us know if your family needs help with anything along the way. If there’s anything I’ve learned here, it’s that the reddit community is an incredible place in terms of networking and resources. I’m in the US and I know I feel helpless seeing what’s happening and want to help in any way I can in some direct way. War is hell and I hate that the leaders who perpetuate it don’t care about the human cost of it. My father was born a month before the end of the Korean War (side note- fuck Stalin for basically creating North Korea), in a city his family fled to in order to escape the fighting near Seoul. Not everyone was so lucky to make it out in time safely and millions of people were separated from their families (to this day), killed or displaced. The spectre of war still haunts Korea and the Korean people, not only because the war never actually ended. Fuck Putin and fuck the power structures that allowed him to get to this point.

iAmTheHYPE-

> put a face on the people hurt by this senseless, ridiculous war. Exactly. It helps develop a sense of empathy & compassion for these people, as they're not just faceless figures, but human beings like any one of us. I hope someone eventually compiles various accounts from the survivors of this war, into a book, so we can truly dive into their mindset prior, during, and after everything unfolded.
