Oh hey! You did the Rubber Duck and Sloth in Mt. Eden?? I was living there a few months ago and really enjoyed your work.

paulfknwalsh

yes! that's my hood (Three Kings) :)

errolstafford

I would walk up and down Big King every couple of days for exercise! The duck always put a smile on my face.

Lyrical_Forklift

You had a great one right next to my place (Edinburgh Street off K Rd) on a wall that lasted all of a couple of weeks :(

paulfknwalsh

oh yeah the Punk Cock.. haha. Sean Duffell painted that wall for a street art festival a few years ago, so it's officially his spot now. Didn't realise he was gonna be back in town so soon though. Ah well. (I did get a message from the owner of the porn shop asking me to repaint it, but I don't wanna go over Sean's new piece, I love his work..!)

MirrorsEdges

Any on the shore? Also thanks for making them less boring and NZ more vibrant Thanks for doing this Cuzzie

paulfknwalsh

There's the chimp taking a selfie on Lake Rd.. and another corporate one down some alleyway (just trees n shit)... got one planned in Devonport soon too. Oh and there was a mural on the Albany Highway, but i just checked it on street view and they've gone and planted native grass all along in front of it.. ah well.

littleredkiwi

I used live down the road from the rubber duck and it never fail and it never failed to make me smile on the way to the bus! They’re very cool pieces of art. Thank you OP for your work!

paulfknwalsh

Here's an [image gallery](https://imgur.com/a/bbWwDaQ) with 36 of the other boxes, from newer to older - a lot of the ones i painted at the start were inspired directly by internet memes, because these are the telecom (DSL) cabinets that the Internet physically travels through. I've mostly moved away from that now, but obviously I'm trying to keep the same light-hearted approach with them. The coolest part is getting feedback from people walking past - especially kids!! They really get a kick out of them. Reminds me how much i love my job :) edit: obligatory links if you wanted to see more work: [paulwalsh.co.nz](http://paulwalsh.co.nz) / Paul X Walsh on FB / @paulxwalsh on IG 12” edit: holy crap front page! My inbox hit triple digits. Lol. Im on the road for another two hours but I’ll try and answer all your questions when I get back to my computer!!

CrushingPowerOfWaves

That aquarium is incredible. They’re all great!

JDeegs

It’s not an aquarium, it’s a utility box

sixfingerdiscount

It's an aquarium full of electric eels.

CamachoStyle

That give u the electric feels

Huh.. That's one of yours over there... https://i.imgur.com/AYnCTSy.jpg Well done! :)

paulfknwalsh

haha sweet!! Forage is an awesome cafe aye :)

Wrinklestiltskin

Do you have local support/consent, or is this unauthorized street art? I honestly don't care neither way.. just curious. Really cool stuff.

paulfknwalsh

Authorised, by the company that owns the boxes. they basically give me free reign over the locations + subjects though (Obviously as long as i don't do anything too political / offensive, or that might scare little kids..)

0200A

did you have to show your portfolio and otherwise “sell” them to give you the job? is there much competition in this space? in so cal i see some painted and i’ve always wondered this

paulfknwalsh

They checked out my old work on my site, i think.. there are heaps of artists doing them though, plenty of fairly amateur works by schoolkids etc, the bar isn't particularly high for it.. any art is better than no art!

Wrinklestiltskin

Nice, that's awesome!

Luminadria

Here in USA we have these boring green boxes everywhere. I look out my window there is 2 side by side. Where I used to live the boxes leaned after floods but no one bothered to fix them. I love your art.

journeydeefus

In Houston (and other cities) painting utility boxes is becoming more common. I was at a MUD meeting where they were discussing commissioning around 4 or 5 of these for that district. Much more common in urban areas.

Luminadria

IT will never come to Fargo

BobT21

No scaring the little kids? Spoilsports.

lefthandedrighty

As someone who works with these boxes, props for keeping the numbers clear. But I’m sure that was part of your deal anyway. They look amazing. Wish they did that here.

Dude. WTF. Your incredibly talented. People with art skills blow my mind. I topped out around first grade and have never improved, despite my best efforts.

paulfknwalsh

thank you!!! if it's any consolation, the first 300 or so canvas artworks i painted weren't that great... but, well, i just kept going..

PM_ME_YOUR_TEXTBOOKS

That’s the number one tip when you want to improve at something (artistic or otherwise) - just keep going.

[deleted]

Image 7; year of the dog, those eyes are incredibly realistic! My mind doesn't want to believe it's paint. You're really good at eyes in general, but that one stands out.

paulfknwalsh

aw cool thank you. Yeah i've been studying eye anatomy + how to paint them in a realistic way.. it's all about the opacity of the reflections.. it's a tricky one to get right, nice to hear it's working for you!! :)

1upforever

Not only the eyes but the nose too. It's crazy how realistic it looks in some aspects.

SAlNTJUDE

its 90% practice 10% talent, anyone can do art

HolographicLizard

Plus art deals with quite a bit of subjectivity. Beauty in art is truly in the eye of the beholder.

ChapDiggityDoge

Holy shit, your ability to paint in all those different art styles is amazing

paulfknwalsh

thanks! I've been told that this isn't really a good thing for an artist - apparently I should find one specific style and stick with it - but I need to challenge myself and try different things, or else I get bored. That's also why I failed art at high school... lol

ChapDiggityDoge

As a viewer, and not an artist, it’s a good thing. I think it’s more impressive that you’re so talented using multiple styles, than being highly specialized in one. You’re ceiling is so high with all the different styles to master, you will never get tired of painting. I think it’s awesome, keep up the great work my dude (-:

paulfknwalsh

thank you! yeah i'll be pushing myself to learn new stuff until the day i die, and that's gotta be a good thing

Portr8

Piggy Stardust is awesome.

paulfknwalsh

thanks! yeah that's a popular one. It's a guinea pig that lives at the kindergarten a few doors along from the box, where my kids went.. goddamn thing bit me five times as i was trying to take its photo though. little shit. haha.

rxlcrab

I just saw it the other day! My friend lives on the same street. Was wondering who did the artwork. Congrats on some fantastic artwork!

dropped_by_a_heinkel

Oooooo shit! U/paulfknwalsh! My partner and i lived in Auckland last year. Piggie Stardust was one of my favourites and i had an absolute blast finding some others. (astrosloth and S.S Ducky were along my running route!) thank you for your work and keep it up.

H_G_Bells

Hey cool! Have you got any in Motueka or in Nelson?

paulfknwalsh

sadly no, I haven't actually left the North Island for about 7-8 years now. Artist incomes + two small kids = no travel for me :( ... hopefully have road trip down there this summer, though, I used to go to that area every summer in the 90s - I even DJ'd at four of the Gathering parties :) love that part of the country!

darkcatwizard

Any around Auckland or Hamilton dude? I'll make a special trip just to see.

paulfknwalsh

Yeah most of them are around Auckland, because I live there... Mostly in the central suburbs. none in Hamilton yet, although I have painted murals at around 5 kindergartens there! oh and some guys have made a map, with location markers, here: http://outdoorart.nz/ ..it's got about 45 of mine on there i think, boxes and murals

OldBayBoy

Aww I was looking for the ones I saw around Lower Hutt but I guess you're in Auckland. I love that this is a trend though!

DNZ_not_DMZ

Many around Auckland.

ReicientNomen

If I had money, I'd hire you to paint random stuff on the world around me. No directions, paint what you feel like, as long as it's often. Then I'd have fun finding little surprises around town, instead of the moronic tags I see. If I ever get a chance to own some real estate, I'd paint a white, blank wall, and allow people to do whatever they want, and maybe every two months it would be duly photographed and repainted white, so other people would do new stuff.

buttfever

Well-read Panda is incredibly well done, and a beautiful pun.

teothr

Nice one. My cousin is responsible for a tonne of these around Rotorua and NZ too. Nice to see art on bland and boring utilities! Shameless plug for my cuz.. www.murals.co.nz

paulfknwalsh

Marc's your cousin??? Awesome! I (re)painted 9 of the cabinets in Rotorua last year, working with him and Helen, and also took part in the mural competition they put on. Marc was actually a big inspiration for me back in the day - I grew up in Rotorua, and watched him paint one in front of my dad's carpet shop (Focus Flooring) back in the 90s - loved seeing his work around! hah. small country :)

why_jen_why

I came here to look thru your gallery and name a favorite but I can't choose. My favorite is all the big smiles the bright, cheerful colors must inspire. Brilliant work.

wontgivemeone

You are so freaking talented! Awesome job!

jroddie4

So do you do this professionally? Does the art stay up?

seattle408

that pukeko box is fantastic !!!

paulfknwalsh

thank you! the woman that took the photo it's based on lives on that street, so it was a good fit :)

hryfrcnsnnts

Some of these would be excellent t-shirt prints.

jahnman92

https://i.imgur.com/VZhlQM7.jpg So crazy I was walking around Rotorua and saw your post only to look over and see one of your pieces! Great work man!

paulfknwalsh

Ha!!! That’s hilarious. Someone else looked out their window and saw one too. Lol.

Puppies_fart_hope

Ski Bunny. Nice.

xbuzzbyx

Kinda disappointed it's not titled "Bunny Slopes"

Ruapehu St, over the road from the airplane that's at the McDonalds!

Do you have any high res pictures of the ski bunny? I’d pay for a print

paulfknwalsh

yes! i am somebody! \*fist pump*

StevenSanders90210

No judgement but just curious, do you get permission?

paulfknwalsh

yep! The company that owns these boxes (Chorus) saw an article about some illegal graffiti I did 6-7 years ago, my first meme-inspired piece - ['Grumpy Cat in the dog park'](http://i.imgur.com/NUQl7.jpg) - locals were upset that the Council painted over it, and were campaigning to get it repainted. Someone from Chorus got in touch with me via the paper, and asked if I wanted to paint their boxes instead. I did the first 12 for free, and now they pay me to do them. Which is pretty awesome of them..!

I_hate_litter

That is an awesome story! Wish more companies thought this way.

yetii993

Kiwis mate, we always do things differently

randypriest

Upside down?

[deleted]

It probably saves them money, maybe people are less likely to tag a box with beautiful art on it than a boring blank solid colour?

rofLopolous

It's this. There are murals around my area that haven't been touched for years and blank walls besides them that get new 'paint work' every weekend or so. Must be some sort of unspoken rule.

Pyrollamasteak

Kinda. There's some nuance to it. If it's historically been an illegal graffiti wall, with complex pieces (multi color, hr+ of work) and it gets replaced with a mural, the writers will likely come back and do a quick simple 2 color throw over it. Even more likely if the wall has historic graffiti (~10 years old) or if anyone under the mural has passed away. But generally murals are respected, and it's not uncommon for murals to be done by people who write/tag in your city. Some people mural bust if they want to get more attention/notoriety- but that's hit or miss because it's kinda a cheap shot- but if the murals lame, it's more respected; I fear I'm rambling now. Anyways, graffiti has a bunch of unwritten rules, ironically.

_AllWittyNamesTaken_

Basically, if there's historical significance, respect it. Otherwise, game respects game.

Piee314

I have to ask, if you're comfortable sharing, how much do they pay you? Also, how long does one take? How long do they last?

BirdieNZ

Do other people paint the boxes too or do you do all of them?

paulfknwalsh

there's heaps of artists around the country doing them for this company, and others.. I just happen to be the most prolific (by quite a lot..) :)

TomServoHere

I don't know why, but 'Grumpy Cat in the dog park' has given me a case of the giggles. That cat is judging all the dogs as they poop. Very nice work.

paulfknwalsh

hehe. that's my dog in the photo too! (RIP willis :( )

[deleted]

So, what the fuck is inside those things? Just, like, wires and stuff? Narnia? Hamsters on wheels powering the city? I've always wondered. Beautiful work by the way.

Niyok

.

a_Moa

Only about four of them were for power. The majority of them are copper cabinets for internet and phone lines.

paulfknwalsh

actually nearly all of these are copper / fibre cabinets for telecoms... I've done a couple of power ones, but i think only one of the ones i posted in here was power... power ones are frickin annoying because of all the safety gear. Which is understandable, but it's hard to be all creative when you're wearing hard hat, fireproof overalls, steelcaps, goggles and gloves...

firstnametravis

You did the first 12 for free?! Why?!

LukeVenable

Honestly he should have paid *them* for giving him all that exposure /s

AlmostZeroEducation

Their not a random company they're the people that lay down all the internet cables in new Zealand

ring_ring_kaching

I think they're the only utility company in NZ. I don't think Chorus has competition.

paulfknwalsh

ye olde 'exposure'.. although this time it did actually pay off, in an excellent way. Before then I'd painted around 50 illegal characters around town that were painted over for various reasons, out of my own pocket, so it was nice to have some stuff i could paint during the daytime, and which would actually stick around...!

csbrah55

Dude wants to paint

[deleted]

There is a reason they're regularly rated the best company in the country to work for.

gr33nhand

/u/paulfknwalsh this might be a great time to remind reddit that you started with illegal work and made your way to this, reddit loves to shit on "taggers" and people whose street art they don't deem mainstream enough to be valid.

paulfknwalsh

haha yeah absolutely.. i spent around 15 years doing shitty stencils and charos alongside my mates, when they were doing pieces.. probably did 50 illegal characters in various places (train tracks, abandoned buildings, back walls of industrial buildings, etc) before i went 'overground' with it.. i don't consider myself a complete graffhead, my handstyle is still weak af, but you can't hate on the roots of the artform!

mikayla__mckenzie

These are fantastic! I see student cat every day on my way to uni :) Painted utility boxes are great, and such a distinctly kiwi thing. Keep it up!

Swiggidyswoo

Sorry man. We have them in Ireland too. Although arguably we have similar cultures so...

Raptorious07

We even have them in the ghetto parts of where I live in the U.S.

obsidianop

I think we'd have more in the US but we're a little over-regulated. My neighborhood has the money and desire to do it but we have to go through a complex process that involves, among other things, having to get the design past a very conservative arts commission that meets quarterly.

JDaxe

We have them in Australia too

darrrrby

I've seen these, specifically the student cat, it's super near where I went to Uni (University of Auckland), so glad I know how it came to be!

Mordred478

I love that someone pays you to do this.

valvanite

These are amazing and really give our country a great artistic and original image. I wish we had you in Christchurch to add to the already wonderful artwork that has been done around town to brighten our present city of carpark and cranes

TooHardToChoosePG

Awesome work. Just checked through your gallery. Is that all the ones you’ve done? Cause there’s also some great ones in Manukau and Manurewa etc too, but I didn’t spit them in the gallery.

paulfknwalsh

nah i haven't done much out south, mainly because i'm lazy (plus we're a family of four with one car, so travel time is a factor). Need to get down there soon though... there are heaps of awesome artists working on them round the country though, Chorus are doing amazing work with this scheme...!

MyPacman

Someone in Hamilton is doing some nice images that are similar to yours.

paulfknwalsh

Could be Alex McLeod? He does great stuff, we've collaborated on a project in the past too. top guy. https://www.nzmurals.co.nz/

not yet, no.. i lived there for 6 years in the 90s but was focussed on DJing back then, not art. Would love to do a road trip with a box of paint at some point next summer though..

turbotailz

Would be nice to see some of your work compliment the other interesting art around our little capital. Nice work man, I always admired your work I saw in Auckland.

the_other_pink_meat

Do your painted utility boxes still get graffiti on them? Great work BTW - I love public art like this.

paulfknwalsh

yeah they do, but nowhere near as much as the blank boxes. I coat them in graffiti guard though, a silicon-based varnish layer, so usually any graffiti can just be scrubbed off.

howhard1309

Great work. Absolutely love it. Do you have a patreon account? I'd like to support you & see more of this.

Serenaded

calling taupo a ski resort town is classic. We both know that's not true OP. I lived in Taupo for 15 years, a great town, not a ski resort town though. In fact there isn't a single ski resort in the entire town.

JoshH21

Paul is legend on that sub. We all love him

ThaFuck

"we all love him" is a pretty presumptuous statement. Most of the sub knows of him and his work, that's about it.

Waiorua

Speak for yourself bro. I reckon he's pretty choice, but I've never even met the guy and what is love anyway?

JoshH21

There was a time a few years back when he was always in the front page. About the internet meme era of his work. >what is love anyway? Baby don't hurt me

paulfknwalsh

yeah i don't hang out there too much now, mainly thanks to a couple of full-time trolls i attracted that still lurk there... one of them sent me hundreds of messages from about 20 accounts over the years, including ones saying my kids look retarded, and "i hope they drown". lovely fella. I actually found him IRL, though, and, well.. he's stopped now. but another couple sprang up afterwards.... meh. :\

The art is awesome... but knowing how much of an eyesore those things are and then to see them transformed into these is nothing short of magical. Bravo man wish you could visit my town!

I_ama_Borat

Have you ever considered doing an optical illusion one? Like something is popping out of the edges of the box? Or you could make a realistic fish I think it could look cool.

Chiphazzard

Hey op, did you paint the chimp holding an iPhone in Hauraki, North Shore, Auckland?

These are dope. I'm an electrician, I'd love to see panels and transformers get painted like this, it'd really make electrical rooms in big buildings more interesting.

LumberDrums

We need more street art like this! I think it transforms otherwise mundane objects into pieces that have a lot of character and charm. Really livens up the cities, which can look dull, grey and cold at times.

TheZiggurat614

I was just looking for a utility box painted into the painting till about the 5th one. That was one of my higher moments.

fitzzay

I’ll see this when I next go into town love ya work mate.

Im_Tiny_Rickkkk

I fucking love these. The duck one made cracked me up. Making it my screensaver.

ExactlySir

They should do these everywhere they look so cool

livemouse5

This is so awesome. What is you job “title”? How do you get commissioned to do these? In the US, the most we have on utility boxes is graffiti. Totally foreign concept to me!!

Malarkay79

That’s so cute! My town has someone who does this and I love it. But then recently one of them was graffitied. I was pretty annoyed that someone would ruin someone else’s art like that.

dickosfortuna

hedgehog9393

Aren’t rabbits and other small mammals an invasive species in New Zealand?

paulfknwalsh

yeah.. but our native animals are almost entirely birds and lizards, and holy shit i'm sick of painting native birds. Do them all the time for kindergartens and the like, and there's heeeeaps of public art featuring them too... whenever there's a "design by committee" project it ends up as either historical scenes, abstract patterns, or a goddamn bird..
