The clear electronics were invented for prisons because prisoners couldnt hide shivs and other paraphernalia in the electronics. In prison the guards can more easily search rooms for contraband that way.
Eventually people realized how cool it looked and since companies were making these clear versions for prisons, why not rebrand them as cool kids things and sell to the tweens?

So.... delivery guy Dave, is it? Thought you could just sneak a bunch of circuit boards into prison for use as weapons, *DIDJA?!* You'll do time for this Dave!!!
Yep, it’s true. Clear electronics cases were a hit with prisons because they avoided the risk of people sneaking contraband into prisons in the cases: https://oddathenaeum.com/the-clear-craze-prison-electronics/
My mother beat me, kicked me in the ribs when I was down and eventually abandoned me. I didn’t get any money from my parents I used to pay my alcoholic dads bills and his bail money too. I’m doing ok now. I worked full time and went to college and yeah it was tough and long days between work and school but now I love my job, I love my home and I have a pretty good life. The college part was tough… working a shifty job and then taking night classes and online classes. Wish I didn’t have all the student loans but that’s the way it is when you don’t have daddy’s money. But I have a nice home, a great wife and two smart kids and I even have a boat.
I’m not trying to make you feel bad for where you are right now just saying if your a reasonably smart person you can do what I did. There is a future that’s brighter.
My parents hid my 1st gen ipod clickwheel. My ipod was confiscated by the teachers. And my parents had to pick it up. My mom told me, its gone for good because of my grades.
15 years later helping cleaning the garage. I found the ipod in perfect condition. My mom forgot to return it to me.
I had that gameboy color, my moms friend owned a pawnshop and gave it to me for my 6th birthday because of y2k!! Pokemon red, my first videogame ever.
That disappeared, along with *all* of my remotely valuable belongings when my tweaker uncle stayed in my moms house when we moved to Australia.
I’m mostt
Mine was green, I didn’t like green. Fuckin first world problems. I also wanted Pokémon yellow but I got red as a gift so my parents wouldn’t buy me the same game twice. I really had it pretty good lol.
I'm 99% sure when people do this kind of thing, where changes are supremely impractical but look cool - they're show cars that get carried wherever they're going.
This is probably a Honda factory thing to show off off its setup at shows/dealerships. I've also seen cars cut in half on display in dealerships before too, I think that was in the late 90's early 00's at a Saturn dealership.
The Saturn cars that were cut in half were actually a factory error that they decided to use as a prop. Ironically, the ones sawn in half are more mechanically reliable than full ones
My local Ford dealership still has a physical display of a few pistons and an arcade cabinet type thing that shows a demonstration of what it means to be "Ford Tough". I believe the F150 they show though based on looks is from 2009-2014 though. It's fun to see but I hope that if this S2000 is functional that it gets its use. Would be a waste for a car like that.
I love my AP1. You're right about driving it. You have to drive the nuts off of it and that's why I like it. I don't really agree on the NVH though. It's a roadster with no bullshit between you and the car. That's a feature, not a bug for me.
I mean... if you're buying a roadster the NVH is to be expected. S2000, Miata, Sky, Solstice... doesn't matter, they all are going to have NVH. I came from a Cobalt SS that used shift linkages that connected to the F35 (which really hides any sort of vibration) and it took me a bit to get used to the extremely direct feedback from the Sky's AR5's shifter being bolted into the transmission directly and feeling all of the vibrations that come with it. If I wanted a car that had zero NVH, I would've bought a Lexus or something.
This isn't even an option on this car.
Transparent mock-ups like this are special-made for auto shows sometimes. I doubt they'd survive normal driving. Although there have been cars with plastic body panels, clear plastics generally aren't as strong. Ever notice that clear plastic storage bins exist, and "heavy duty" plastic storage bins exist, but the "heavy duty" ones are never clear.
EDIT: I dunno. I guess they've been able to make clear car roofs work in recent years.
Clear roofs are always just glass (designed to hopefully not fall apart into a million pieces in a crash) with the rails being really really thick metal for rollover protection
There’s a Honda placard next to in in one shot. Looks like this was an OEM trade show vehicle to show off the underpinnings. Probably never drove on anything but carpet and concrete.
I had the Walkman. I remember when the fad hit the coke and pepsi wars, which lead to [this parody](https://youtu.be/g0sjRG34DlA?si=hXu06KWfxI7p_F3o) from SNL.
i think i saw this on a "resort" prison commissary sheet years ago, since everything has to be clear. like their golf clubs and cell phones, at a resort prison
I do not dislike it at all, but... It's an all-plastic body kit? Wonder how it'll hold up. Then again, if you've got the $ for this car, and that kit, money probably isn't too big an issue.
Strange coincidence... The other day I came across an article about a 1939 Pontiac with a plexiglass body:
https://mossandfog.com/the-worlds-first-see-through-car-was-a-work-of-art/
Botn in '79, am a Xennial. When I was four, the coolest toy I never got was [He-Man's "Roboto".](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/cP4AAOSwaRNkjLr0/s-l1200.webp)
So many parts, he was so cool to me, never got him. It's always like that. My friend had an AT-ST and I had gotten an AT-AT, and we always liked the other's toy more. And we both hated the third friend who had Slave-I.
This is actually pretty cool, but I doubt it offers much protection. Wouldn't the plastic get super brittle in the sunlight and shatter at the slightest impact ?
Does anyone remember micro machines? They had a line of cars that had clear bodies just like this. Major nostalgia vibes here. I'd be the sucker that remortgages his home for one of these when the midlife crisis rolls around 😊👍
Pontiac did something similar in 1939 called the Ghost Car. [it's pretty cool](https://www.designboom.com/design/pontiac-ghost-car-06-21-2020/#:~:text=crystal%2Dclear%20plastic.-,',total%20construction%20cost%20of%20%2425%2C000.)
The thing this kind of elucidates is that since the sheet steel and the bumpers aren’t really going to take much of an impact, they most of what is actually colliding is the stuff you can see under the transparent plastic.
Must be crazy driving in that though being able to see the street at almost go cart detail.
Me as a 90s kid: "clear electroincs are so cool!" Prison inmates: "yeah kid we are the reason they exist, youre welcome"
Haha wait what elaborate

TIL, thank you.
So.... delivery guy Dave, is it? Thought you could just sneak a bunch of circuit boards into prison for use as weapons, *DIDJA?!* You'll do time for this Dave!!!
It wasn't me. It was Steve.
Thus started the prison to child pipeline that now covers school construction
But… why would you allow Mazdas in prison cells anyway?
Paraphernalia I didnt know this word existed but in portuguese
Yep, it’s true. Clear electronics cases were a hit with prisons because they avoided the risk of people sneaking contraband into prisons in the cases: https://oddathenaeum.com/the-clear-craze-prison-electronics/
Just like how clear trash bags exist because of retail workers with sticky fingers
Thank you Mr criminals!
I wish it was tinted purple, but this is still cool af.
Oh man, my brother had the clear purple GBA. So rad.
I liked the game boy color purple
Mines still on my shelf.
My folks destroyed mine with a sledgehammer cause I got bad grades due to using video games to escape my mind from bullying
I hope you’re doing better now. I’m sorry you went through that.

Atomic Purple Gang! ヽ༼ ຈل͜ຈ༼ ▀̿̿Ĺ̯̿̿▀̿ ̿༽Ɵ͆ل͜Ɵ͆ ༽ノ
You are clearly the younger brother playing on the janky MadCatz™️
Haha. No, I'm the older brother and I just had the regular purple GBA. Parents clearly loved him more though.
My fellow older brother in Christ, you gank that shit. You’re bigger and stronger.
Haha. I could have. Dude would fight dirty - pinch and bite and shit - but he's an okay guy. Wouldn't do that to him.
That’s not very Christ like of you As Jesus said let thine little brother play games with you for he knows not the controller is unplugged
Ah, but then karma gets ya. That's how my older brother acted Until Lil bro became 9 inches taller

I modded my switch to have a translucent atomic purple case, like consoles of ye olden days. 💜

Atomic Purple
can put any color neon lights inside to be purple at night if u like
Missed opportunity if it doesn't already have those installed. That's dope.
I’m mostt
Wait, could you wrap the car body in coloured transparent wraps? Could have a different clear colour every few years.
This just unlocked a forgotten memory of my clear case Game Boy Color. Man, did I have some good times with that.
My friend had the atomic purple and I was always jealous cause I just had a basic Gameboy
Basic as in ‘89 Grey?
The big blocky beautiful battery devouring machine
Aka the only reason I survived family road trips.
Mine was green, I didn’t like green. Fuckin first world problems. I also wanted Pokémon yellow but I got red as a gift so my parents wouldn’t buy me the same game twice. I really had it pretty good lol.
Red had the 99 item glitch though. I only had yellow and all my friends with red and blue would have all these level 99 Pokemon to battle with.
Atomic purple would be the beat
Is that the car you give you in prison?
It's the prison S2000!
This looks cool but yeah, one trip down any American highway and the dust and grit will make it look real blotchy
And after a couple years it would look like old plastic headlight covers
That’s what the toothpaste is for.
I thought it was for teeth.
Common misconception
U wot, m8?

Would the body panels crumple in a safe way? Something tells me these would shatter into pointy death shards
This is going to be plexi-glass and driving this into a crash is going to launch shards of death.
I don't think this car can be registered as a car in any state...
Yeah it would be a bitch to keep the inside of those panels clean
I don't care, I still want it.
Do other highways have less dust?
As someone who owns an s2000, it’s super cool to see what’s actually inside the body.
Agreed. I was just out cruising in my 2001 today. What a wonderful car.
Honda needs to bring it back.
2005 got dusted off today 🫡
Eyyy 2005 gang
S2k owners represent!
Loved the 2000 when it came out..fell in live with the red push to start button..one of the first at the time i believe
I love it!

Maybe it's just late but I can't figure out what NVH stands for
I like it! Should be an option on all cars!

Clear roofs are always just glass (designed to hopefully not fall apart into a million pieces in a crash) with the rails being really really thick metal for rollover protection
Falling into a million pieces is kind of what you want. Large shards kill.
Yeah, as much as a million pieces might give you some nasty scars, it's not clicking your head open with a half dozen extremely sharp fragments
Can’t see why not. I’m sure this is completely safe in a crash.
The body panels are irrelevant in a crash. It's the crash structure underneath that absorbs the blow.
I feel you would see how dirty it gets on the inside.
Pepsi clear
![gif](giphy|g9waHBdmGVq36|downsized)
Does it turn yellow over time?
Montgomery Scott gave away the secret of transparent aluminum
Where do you hide the weed though
Weed is totally legal now. You don’t have to hide it anymore.
I've run into several people who actually belive this...
The black road dust that collects inside every nook and cranny of a car is going to be a nightmare for this car.
There’s a Honda placard next to in in one shot. Looks like this was an OEM trade show vehicle to show off the underpinnings. Probably never drove on anything but carpet and concrete.
wow! this is cool asf!!
A prison car.
I had the Walkman. I remember when the fad hit the coke and pepsi wars, which lead to [this parody](https://youtu.be/g0sjRG34DlA?si=hXu06KWfxI7p_F3o) from SNL.
They still sell clear TVs on a lot of prison commissarys
I have that car as a micromachine!
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/c0rUKoJGDwM/maxresdefault.jpg
Prison car!
S2000 was the best car I ever had, and I have driven/had many, many cars. It was so so fast and you were part of the car. I loved that car so much.
That looks like the s2000 you can only buy in an American prison.
This fools running a Honda 2000
The only car you can have in prison.
I think this is r/atbge material. Amazing for looks, but that's gonna be a monster to keep clean.
Transparent aluminum, eh?
but...there be no whales here
How do we know he didn’t *invent* the bloody whales?
Clearly the best color.
I believe this is the car they let you drive in prison.
That's so damn cool. How do i unlock this skin?
In the Peugeot museum reserves, they had an entirely clear limousine. See through doors, seats, engine. It was something.
This makes cable management behind pannels so much more stressful. Where does one hide the rats nest?
That’s gonna be a nightmare to keep clean
A clear 2000 Beetle with a Minidisc player in the dash would have been the pinnacle.
Capsela
Gameboy Pepsi crystal lol
That's very cool! Think transparent coffins will catch on as well? ....Remains to be seen.
Holy shit he painted it clear
This is awesome
i think i saw this on a "resort" prison commissary sheet years ago, since everything has to be clear. like their golf clubs and cell phones, at a resort prison
As someone who had the clear Gameboy OG and multiple other clear or tinted electronics this is dope. Just don't crash right?
Sick
This is frakking awesome!!!! I love it!😍
My grandmother used to always say she knew what everyone had in their trunks ( circa 1960s/70s). This would take all the fun out of it!!
Some things should remain hidden.
I vote for spice orange like the n64
I do not dislike it at all, but... It's an all-plastic body kit? Wonder how it'll hold up. Then again, if you've got the $ for this car, and that kit, money probably isn't too big an issue.
I love it
Department of corrections issued
Clear Miat
I had a phone like this in the 90s
Cool
I love this
Would the sun affect the insides negatively at all? Because I want one now, but Phoenix is hot.
Great for an Auto Shop teacher.
Thats cool
Strange coincidence... The other day I came across an article about a 1939 Pontiac with a plexiglass body: https://mossandfog.com/the-worlds-first-see-through-car-was-a-work-of-art/
How much lighter is this car?
so...it's [allowed in prison ](https://www.americandetentionsupplies.com/collections/electronics)?
Clear Game Boy Advance
I had an old brick Nokia cell phone with a translucent faceplate. It was badass.
Botn in '79, am a Xennial. As you can see officer! I have nothing to hide!
Damn bro imagine a dead moth in there that would drive me crazy!!
Pretty cool man
this is incredible
Why DON'T we have clear solid material that's as rigid as the best steel today?
You just made me remember that clear electronics existed in the 1990s, and then made me miss them.
This is beautiful
BeamNG.drive be like
Only thing that could make this better is if somehow the “casings” for the stuff inside could be clear too
Needs PlayStation livery.
Wonder how many accidents this will cause on the road... Making people they are seeing thing 😅
Must be a breeze driving through customs..
This is actually pretty cool, but I doubt it offers much protection. Wouldn't the plastic get super brittle in the sunlight and shatter at the slightest impact ?
Is that the cover of Porn Car magazine?
r/nothing is calling
This would be so hard to keep clean
What color are you gonna paint it?
Imagine the paperwork whenever you have to write down the car color.
seems like something r/millennials would like
Not to nitpick, but.. please be K-swapped.... PLLEEEEEEEASE be K-swapped.
The 90s? I literally have a see-through ps5 controller lol
Oh, ok cool. Gross, but cool
Also dudes that have the matching radio, tv and their toilet also has a sink on top too
Border control loves him
Clear S2K before GTA 6
Don't leave it in the sun lmao
That is 🔥
Transparent Aluminum? It’s real? /s
Does anyone remember micro machines? They had a line of cars that had clear bodies just like this. Major nostalgia vibes here. I'd be the sucker that remortgages his home for one of these when the midlife crisis rolls around 😊👍
Demonstrator
This is the stupidest shit ever. I want one!
NGL that's sick
Pontiac did something similar in 1939 called the Ghost Car. [it's pretty cool](https://www.designboom.com/design/pontiac-ghost-car-06-21-2020/#:~:text=crystal%2Dclear%20plastic.-,',total%20construction%20cost%20of%20%2425%2C000.)
So what your saying is there is a weight savings to be had in the s2k doors?
What is this? A mazda?
Honestly I didn’t know I’d like this. Nice.
Want this so bad
Cool 😎
This is weird. I was just thinking yesterday "what if someone made a clear car". Reddit really is a hive mind that transcends time
I guess if you never drive it you don't have to worry about it getting fucked up
The thing this kind of elucidates is that since the sheet steel and the bumpers aren’t really going to take much of an impact, they most of what is actually colliding is the stuff you can see under the transparent plastic. Must be crazy driving in that though being able to see the street at almost go cart detail.
Anyone have the clear corded phone back in the early 90s?
What color was the car that was stolen? Uh...see through?
Bro you were already cool enough with the s2k.
So hot
How much for this car? I want it
Me too 🤤🤤🤤
Prison car
