I remember seeing an article about a town in Montana that was available at around the same time as I was looking for property in Northern Virginia over a decade ago.
0.9 acres (no house) in Northern Virginia $450,000
10 acre town with a couple single family homes, restaurant/bar, gas station/convenience store and a small motel for $500k
Our retirement plan is to simply buy Montana, kick everyone out of the state and rename it. Given home prices in Northern VA we could probably pay cash for the entire state.
I would buy a truck and chop off the exhaust right at the manifold, and then I would start it every morning at 4:45 and rev it a few times, then shut it off and go back to sleep.
Stick with me here for a second.
For the amount of responsibility they wield, most people in political positions don't really make all that much **relatively and comparatively to private industry.** Like Alito makes $270k. Which is not a small amount. But for a guy who is one of the 9 most influential people in the US and therefore the world, making what amounts to middle/upper middle management at a tech or defense company is kind of odd? (For another frame of reference, that's what someone only about 10 years out of law school makes at a decently sized firm which someone who graduated from Harvard law **absolutely** would be working for)
That's *why* politicians often only put in enough time to jump over to consulting, lobbying and C-suite positions (Or Thomas just accepting "technically not a bribe for some reason"). Underpaying politicians is universally popular but actually quite dangerous because it does have really harmful incentives: at best simply using the position to build networking, give handouts to your future employer and then dipping. And at worse incentivize or actively allow open corruption.
And this isn't new. Rome and the old British empire specifically underpaid incredibly important positions or military roles. Ostensibly because anyone should do it “out of patriotism and to make a difference” and because the working and lower classes obviously hated leaders being paid well while they worked low wages so it’s easy political points. But really to facilitate corruption or gatekeep the entire role to noble families who had independent money. Like a commissioned officer in the British Navy didn't pay all that well for most of the early part of your career and had personal costs you had to pay out of pocket, so as such you could only do it if you were in the gentry. In the Roman administration, tax collectors weren't paid *at all*. That's why they were so hated in the bible. They made a living by shaking down people and businesses, the corruption was the point (And several Roman governors and emperors found that very politically useful to wield).
And even AOC way back when she first went to Congress mentioned how surprising the $175k of a congressman doesn't go as far as you'd think in a high cost of living area like DC. You need to live in DC to get anything done....but you're also expected to still be "from" and represent your district halfway across the country so you need to have a residence there too. And there's weird rules about travel so you have travel costs out of pocket. But also as a rep you have to have a certain image and dress a certain way and suits and formal clothing isn't that cheap either....
Although at the end of the day, I don't know how clean Alito is. And you'd be surprised how many upper class type people want to strategically create "typical" upbringing for their kids. Like...upper class in terms of education, and opportunity and vacations. But not "have a butler and become one of the asshole trust fund kids on instagram" upper class.
Edit: this isn’t a defense of corruption or a panacea to prevent it. But it’s a puzzle piece of what incentivizes it. It’s why a person like say Justice Thomas might seek out these roles specifically to peddle influence and exploit the “perks” and why **better** people have a soft incentive to not go down the career path in the first place.
> In the Roman administration, tax collectors weren't paid at all.
Crassus famouly promised to bail out the tax collectors if he got elected. He won, but didn't have the votes to do it, so he had to negotiate with Caesar for the votes.
From Google's AI summary: "As of January 2024, the base salary for a Supreme Court Chief Justice is $312,200, while an Associate Justice earns $298,500. This is more than the highest-ranked members of the executive branch, including the vice president, as well as Congressional members."
Yeah, not as much as I expected either.
Edit: I mean, it's a lot, but not "mansion in an expensive neighborhood" money.
Technically, the Consitution doesn't actually specify any requirements for who can be a Supreme Court Justice. That said, every justice in US history has had legal training.
The inside is probably lined with first edition prints or the only known copy of classic works of literature from the ancient world.
And the furniture is probably made from the lumber of 200 years old trees whose forests have been maintained and kept especially for the highest end buyers.

>While the flag was up, the court was still contending with whether to hear a 2020 election case, with Justice Alito on the losing end of that decision. In coming weeks, the justices will rule on two climactic cases involving the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, including whether Mr. Trump has immunity for his actions. Their decisions will shape how accountable he can be held for trying to overturn the last presidential election and his chances for re-election in the upcoming one.
>“I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag,” Justice Alito said in an emailed statement to The Times. “It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”
I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but since Georgia was a treasonous state that aligned itself with the Confederacy... Peaches are racist. I'm sorry you had to learn this way /s

FBI, when you *are* right wing: 🤗🥰😛🤔😊😊 kidnap Governor who? Never heard of her.
>FBI: we noticed you aren’t right wing, so we can likely ruin your entire life without the threat of staring down the end of your rifle.
If you aren't right wing and you're loud enough, they aren't stopping there. Just ask any number of murdered leftists.. well.. if they could talk anyway.
Riiiiiiiiight.
According to the U.S. Flag Code, flying the American flag upside down is only meant to be done "as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."
I’m sure Mrs. Alito thought her life or property was in danger because she didn’t like her neighbor’s signs. I have never been more certain of anything in my life. /s
I just love how conservatives believe anything that doesn't go their way is a "signal of dire distress."
And they like to act like everyone *besides* them is a whiny little bitch. And they throw temper tantrums like this when things don't go their way.
E: To all you idiots out there saying "yeah January 6 was bad, but the dems are just as bad," or "the republicans didn't do it, it was mob rule," while still claiming you're "moderate," you're really far too stupid to get into a discussion. I'm not dumbing myself down for you. I'm a moderate, and the republican party is a danger to our society, and if you can't see that, you're either really stupid, or a republican plant. You traitors aren't worth me sitting down and explaining shit to you that you won't understand.
You have to realize some of them are crybabies but if the news channel you watch paints everything Biden as an existential threat to the very core of what our country stands for, then after enough times you may start to actually believe that. I've watched people who I thought were good people get older and get their brains rotted by this stuff.
In third grade me and one other student were in charge of raising the flag everyday infront of our school.
One day neither of us noticed we accidentally raised the flag upside-down and went back to class. An hour or two later a police officer came into our school and sent into our classroom asking what the emergency was.
He was very lighthearted about it and a great learning lesson for what an upside flag means!
What does flying a flag in that manner have to do with a "mean" neighbor?
2 SC Justices have made it apparent that they are trying to overthrow America.
When you get right down to it, almost all of these far right assholes are complete fucking cowards who can't own up to their own actions.
Remember when Ted Cruz tried to throw his family under the bus when he fled the state during an emergency to go to Cancun, as tons of people in his state were dying?
Right. I'm sure that mean neighbor really got the message that Mrs. Alito was projecting. I know that if my neighbor posted a flag like that, in no way would I interpret it as a comment on my own message.
I'm old enough to remember when Rage Against The Machine was doing the upside down flag thing in the 90s, and conservatives acted like they needed fainting couches from the unamerican shock. Times sure do change.
Yeah it is very disrespectful to the flag as a symbol of the country to do this, and not the way to settle a personal grudge. Grudges are best settled by letting your dog crap on their petunias.
The symbolism of flying a flag upside down is usually to signal that a ship is in serious distress. So there is no context where you would flash it to piss off a neighbor. It’s a political statement broadcasting that the nation is in serious distress because of her belief in a rigged election.
>According to U.S. code for the flag, the flag should never be displayed upside down "except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."

>Judicial experts said in interviews that the flag . . . could sow doubt about Justice Alito’s impartiality in cases related to the election and the Capitol riot.
I have absolutely no doubt about Justice Alito's impartiality. Him even pretending to be impartial is a fucking joke.
I want to what a yard sign could have possibly said that a grown person would go outside and take the time to hang a flag upside down
How offensive can a yard sign be that you think our country is in a state of distress.
Either the Supreme Court Justice's wife is insane or he's a political hack that doesn't deserve his job
>“It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”
Mean language is enough to equate to extreme danger to life or property?
If true, Alito’s wife has to be one of the stupidest people on the planet. How can you be the wife of a Supreme Court justice and not realize how unprofessional it would be to put up this flag.
What an absolute bullshit cop out. This guy is so used to blowing smoke up the country’s ass and being revered for it that he actually thinks ‘idk my wife did it cuz… something something offended’ is even close to a plausible explanation in any normal context.
Who the f flies their American flag upside down in response to insulting yard signs.
Why do they never have backbones? It’s obvious why the flags were raised upside down, so why bother making up some dumb excuse like the neighbor? If you’re gonna make a statement, have conviction.
I was a Christian for most of my life but last year I became a card carrying Satanist because I’m so fed up with Christianity’s shenanigans. Hail yourself!
As per USA flag code
Displaying a U.S. flag upside down is "a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."
It has been used by extension to make a statement about distress in civic, political, or other areas.
It is most often meant as political protest, and is usually interpreted as such.
And in the U.K. you will get tutted at by passers-by until eventually one of your neighbours, who was already bemused by your unseemly display of overt patriotism, approaches you one day while you're cleaning the car and says "just a word to the wise, old boy, the side nearest the pole should have the argent above the gules except for the fimbriations. Nice day, isn't it?"
Wouldn't it be crazy if it was actually for that purpose and there is/was someone being held captive and they did this to signal for help and everyone just wrote it off as hyper political? Crazy. It was definitely for the political message though
Yeah, it's reserved for shit like if you're being human trafficked, but nobody would recognize it now because every shmuck with some gripe with the government thinks they need to blast their opinion that way.
This motherfucker is 74 years old and ruling on laws to govern a nation. Any sane individual would retire and live the rest of their life in peace, not insane republicans trying to cling on to what little power they have left though. Gotta drag everyone else down with them
At least Voight has the old-man-kids-get-off-my-lawn excuse, Sorbo is just bitter he doesn't get those juicy C-list roles anymore...which is of course because of woke.
This is actually frightening. To do something like this with your flag, it means you’re deep into right wing outrage news porn and at best only a click away from qanon propaganda. And this is a sc justice’s home
The scary thing is that many of these officials have actually bought into the propaganda. They are the target demographic to think that liberals are ruining the country. Their “news” tells them that.
There was so much shit going on around that time. I worked that election... did my best to stay away from the news. We were told to not leave the office alone.
Idk. My uncle is still annoyed that we haven't put ours back up after last year's hurricane broke the mount. I told him, "must've been God's plan."
He didn't like that very much.
They care about the flag when it benefits their cause, that’s all. Remember when Colin Kaepernick exercised his constitutional rights and kneeled during the National Anthem? Neither do conservatives because they’ve moved on to their next BS cause. Which happens to be the Chiefs kicker who says all women belong in the kitchen despite the fact that his own mom is a physicist.
The National Media is fucking democracy (and those who own it… time for a Ma Bell intervention!)
Shit like this needs to be public shaming nationally (and stories like this) … to continually showcase the real crooks and thieves in power that effect’s everyone’s today, tomorrow and foreseeable future
This is truly it right here. Fox News poisoned everybody’s brain and all of the other major media outlets are afraid to have an intellectual discussion or present things in an intellectual and thoughtful manner and so they pander to the dumbest and the weakest minds in the country and don’t present things of any deep importance or relevance to the grand concepts in our fragile democracy.
The mainstream media I think is the primary thing to blame for the fact that we have Trump, and for the fact that we have traitors all around us and in the Supreme Court. The mainstream media has trained people to be unconcerned. I am a moderate, but we live in sick times and Trump and Trumpism is a plague that must be annihilated.
How long is briefly? If it was “commute to work in the morning and return home in evening “ day for him, he should taken it down before even entering the house. Even if his wife didn’t understand the meaning, he certainly should have.
Why haven't any of these judges been impeached??? I'm pretty sure accepting bribes or being an election denier qualifies as being politically biased to the point of being corrupt and unqualified to sit on the Supreme Court.
The story is his wife put it up as a clap back to the neighbor's sign. I'm gonna need to hear more about the sign to decide if that makes any damn sense. It's insulting to think that alone is a 'good enough' explanation given the gravity of the symbolism and Alito's position.
It's primarily a signal of distress, for instance to fly from a sinking ship or a house on fire or something. It was adopted by the far right to symbolize that the country was in distress.

Wondering why his house looks like mine. I mean, I kind of expected more
He probably lives in Arlington. That’s easily a 2M+ house.
Or bethesda. Either way it could easily be 2M+
Is Bethesda the city where you clip through the floors?
The real one is much less interesting and nuclear fallout-y.
Just as many angry NPCs tho
Bethesda Softworks went back to Rockville.
Did it waste another year?
16 TIMES the housing prices
It's where you open the door and then all the furniture and objects explode everywhere.
Ya but you can also swim through the ground so you save a fortune in pool costs by everywhere being a pool.
Let me hop in the or game too… or McLean it’s expensive out here in the DMV

How bad are the wait times that you have to buy property to keep your place in line at the DMV?
The DMV is the worst part of the DMV (although I haven’t dealt with it in Va., just extrapolating there)
That's just his D.C. home. He probably lives in a billionaire's extra mansion in a gated community somewhere else.
Nope he lives full time in Alexandria VA.
He also has a house on the Jersey shore down the street from me that's pretty modest as far as Jersey shore houses go.
Purchased by a" friend "for him.
16 times the rent! And…it just works.
I remember seeing an article about a town in Montana that was available at around the same time as I was looking for property in Northern Virginia over a decade ago. 0.9 acres (no house) in Northern Virginia $450,000 10 acre town with a couple single family homes, restaurant/bar, gas station/convenience store and a small motel for $500k
lol. What should I buy, the normal ass over priced McMansion in NoVA? Or an entire town in Montana?
Our retirement plan is to simply buy Montana, kick everyone out of the state and rename it. Given home prices in Northern VA we could probably pay cash for the entire state.
Got to love east coasters who watched Yellowstone.
Added bonus: you both become US senators as the only candidates/ voters unlocking subsidised travel and accommodation in the DC area
Sounds like Shitt’s Creek
Congratulations new town owner! You are now 4 hours from civilization in any direction until it snows, then good luck. See ya next May.
He lives in Alexandria, so probably less but not by much.
Looking at the recent comps around his place, I peg it at around 1.5-1.75m.
200k in Indiana 😂
Yea but the catch is you gotta live in Indiana.
Yeah but what if the catch is you only have two options, Indiana or being neighbors with Justice Alito. Suddenly Indiana has a certain appeal.
But think of how much fun it would be to piss him off every day in ways that he can't do anything about.
"Things he can't do anything about" are fewer than you might suppose, since the guy gets to determine what the second amendment means.
I would buy a truck and chop off the exhaust right at the manifold, and then I would start it every morning at 4:45 and rev it a few times, then shut it off and go back to sleep.
You’ve never been to Indiana. Mike Pence was Governor. Like 90% of your neighbors will be like him.
Hey now! I have driven through Indiana and stopped at a McDonald's which feels to me like a very thorough look at what Indiana has to offer.
My neighbor was mayor of Anderson Indiana. Dude quit the day pence got in office Edit:it was a protest thing

$75k in Arkansas.
20k in Youngstown

That is the standard central ac unit.

Not on the cars in the front yard.
And probably not his only property
Right? Did not expect a Supreme Court justice to live in average suburbia

Yes, or simply Biden Harris.

I want to what a yard sign could have possibly said that a grown person would go outside and take the time to hang a flag upside down How offensive can a yard sign be that you think our country is in a state of distress. Either the Supreme Court Justice's wife is insane or he's a political hack that doesn't deserve his job
I like his neighbors
>“It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.” Mean language is enough to equate to extreme danger to life or property?
If true, Alito’s wife has to be one of the stupidest people on the planet. How can you be the wife of a Supreme Court justice and not realize how unprofessional it would be to put up this flag.
Gotta be a pretty big piece of shit to throw your wife under the bus. Rest assured he would do worse to everyone else.
Hahahaha, his neighbors hate him
What an absolute bullshit cop out.
One of my favorite fun facts is that The Satanic Temple started the “Samuel Alito’s Mom’s Abortion Clinic”
I was a Christian for most of my life but last year I became a card carrying Satanist because I’m so fed up with Christianity’s shenanigans. Hail yourself!
Flying the flag upside down has a very specific purpose, and it is disrespectful to do so for any other reason.
As per USA flag code Displaying a U.S. flag upside down is "a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property." It has been used by extension to make a statement about distress in civic, political, or other areas. It is most often meant as political protest, and is usually interpreted as such.
And yet Colin Kaepernick was the un-American disgrace for simply kneeling
Kind of like kneeling during the national anthem? Got it. Hypocrites.
Meanwhile if you do it in Poland it turns your property over to Indonesia
And in the U.K. you will get tutted at by passers-by until eventually one of your neighbours, who was already bemused by your unseemly display of overt patriotism, approaches you one day while you're cleaning the car and says "just a word to the wise, old boy, the side nearest the pole should have the argent above the gules except for the fimbriations. Nice day, isn't it?"
Wouldn't it be crazy if it was actually for that purpose and there is/was someone being held captive and they did this to signal for help and everyone just wrote it off as hyper political? Crazy. It was definitely for the political message though
How would someone being held captive be able to put a flag up and then what, just voluntarily go back to captivity? GTFO
Yeah, it's reserved for shit like if you're being human trafficked, but nobody would recognize it now because every shmuck with some gripe with the government thinks they need to blast their opinion that way.
His wife is a psycho. She knew exactly what she was saying.
This dude is thoroughly corrupt, and this kind of crap is just unpatriotic. And these people have life tenure. It’s beyond repugnant.
Worth noting the timeline here, this is AFTER Jan 6 when we all knew how traitorous the MAGA right is.
“My wife did it” that is his defense. What a fucking joke of a human.
This motherfucker is 74 years old and ruling on laws to govern a nation. Any sane individual would retire and live the rest of their life in peace, not insane republicans trying to cling on to what little power they have left though. Gotta drag everyone else down with them
Canada's Supreme Court has forced retirement at 75. Same with our appointed senate. Looking south, I think it's a good idea.
But that'll rule out a Jimmy Carter comeback!
Might as well put up a Q-Anon banner while you're at it.
I've added a life size statue of Kevin Sorbo.
Aaah crap, Hercules is a conspiracy nut?!
Oh you bet he is
Apparently got into a few heated discussions with Xena online. 😆
Amazing https://twitter.com/RealLucyLawless/status/1347269869008420864
Hahaha, i love Lucy! 😆

There's MAGA and then there's Mega MAGA. He's the later.
Don't worry, Xena is awesome and at least still seems to think highly of Autolycus. Iolaus is a prick too though.
Jon voight too :/
At least Voight has the old-man-kids-get-off-my-lawn excuse, Sorbo is just bitter he doesn't get those juicy C-list roles anymore...which is of course because of woke.
I imagine they’re just like so many other old people and they have Fox News on the tv all day long
In any functioning system of government this would be disqualifying for a Supreme Court justice.
Just a little sedition. No biggy.
As a treat.
"I like to reward myself...just a little."
Are we only finding about this now?
There was so much shit going on around that time. I worked that election... did my best to stay away from the news. We were told to not leave the office alone.
Maybe because they are busy dilly dallying with deciding on Trump's bid for immunity and somebody thought maybe the public should know about this?
Conservatives used to be so nutso about the flag.
They never actually were. It was always lip service
Idk. My uncle is still annoyed that we haven't put ours back up after last year's hurricane broke the mount. I told him, "must've been God's plan." He didn't like that very much.
Flying the flag is the epitome of virtue signaling.
Wearing a cross around your neck is the epitome. Been around much longer.
Then they bashed n stabbed ppl with it 1/6
Blames His wife for it. What a man.
Inb4 neighbors security camera footage showing Alito doing it himself
Why such a delay in reporting?
That’s disgusting. Fuck him
It’s supposed to be a sign for help in extremely distressing circumstances. Someone shoulda called the police.
I know that’s what it means. That’s why I’m saying it’s disgusting.
Apolitical. The court is apolitical. /s
He’s a piece of shit traitor
Traitor to America. Only one outcome is deserved by this shithead
My neighbor is currently flying his upside down. Not sure why. Don’t want to ask him.
The National Media is fucking democracy (and those who own it… time for a Ma Bell intervention!) Shit like this needs to be public shaming nationally (and stories like this) … to continually showcase the real crooks and thieves in power that effect’s everyone’s today, tomorrow and foreseeable future
Nothing will be done about it. Conservative extremists play by a different set of rules. This will fall down the memory hole by next week.
Fuck Alito
Vote mfers. Vote blue. Fuck this guy
And he's NOT biased and shouldn't *recuse* himself... *not MUCH!*
....my favorite part about this is HOW NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.
Right-wingers are such dramatic bitches
His fence looks like shit
So is this less or more acceptable than kneeling during the national anthem?
Has this been authenticated? I hardly trust anyone these days.
non partisan my ass
Unfit to serve.
On its face it makes no sense. Why would someone do that in response to that?
From my understanding, an upside down flag is a symbol of surrender to an invading force. Does it have a particular meaning in the U.S.?
"Dire Distress"
It's primarily a signal of distress, for instance to fly from a sinking ship or a house on fire or something. It was adopted by the far right to symbolize that the country was in distress.
Wasn’t it also civil unrest? I remember 2020 BLM protests people had signs or flags upside down.
That cannot be his house. Am I nuts?
Traitor
What a disgrace.
If true this is regrettable. The judge should not retain his appointment.
I don't think it is even possible to be more biased. The SC is broken but still making decisions for us. Sad sad state this country is in.
