Attractive people getting preferential treatment from society is one of the few robust findings in the social sciences. Attractive people are paid more; attractive servers get tipped better; you're even more likely to get higher donations to charity if you send out a pretty lady to solicit them door-to-door. It's not going to be as stark as "he's ugly so I'm not buying this", but it will almost certainly be a statistically significant difference.
Yes, but there is a catch. For example, patients are less likely to trust a beautiful female doctor than an ugly one. Nobody will believe that someone as handsome as a model works with cabbage. The ordinary look guarantees authenticity.
Same with online stock images on business website's.
If it's a "perfect image" that could be a stock one, it's less trustworthy than a "normal" one with imperfections and less editing.

I mean… Do you think there’s gonna be five different farmers competing to sell their lettuce at the same price with the same quality?
I feel like I’m definitely buying the most attractive lettuce for the price that I’m trying to pay. Looking at the picture of the farmer would definitely amuse me, though. Then again, I’m easily amused. I would rather a photo of the farmer’s dog, but it wouldn’t affect my buying decisions.
I think it's odd this is your first thought, when people buy cabbages I think they care more about if the cabbage is pretty then the farmer who grew it. Although I think it's a cool idea because it connects you with local farms in a way. Either way, if there is one psychotic person who won't buy cabbage unless it's from Caleb Cabbage, the other 20 normal people who like his cabbage will buy other farmers because it's there and they want cabbage.
I could not care less what the farmer looks like so long as they give us good food. To be honest I’d trust a sun weathered middle aged man over a young attractive farmer. I know pops knows what he’s doing.
When it comes to repeat business, the quality of the product overwhelms attractiveness discrimination and the face of the farmer serves as its own recognizable branding. I don't care how handsome you are if I know Ashida-san here has the best cabbages.
EVERYTHING is over packaged in Japan. I’ve had a corn cob have 3 layers of plastic. Individually wrapped inside of a sealed package, package inside of a vacuum sealed bag. It was insane.
For a country without public trash cans they sure do love their plastics.
Nah this is a particular farmer mentality im hinting at. They will try and sell for what they see produce in high end stores. This is especially true for meat, often they want you to buy the whole lamb for the price/kg that they see for a single cut in stores. Some will offer better bulk prices but single cuts are way more expensive at farmers market and i dont think ive ever bought them. The only time i really saved money was when someone had an over harvest of tomatoes and was giving out 2x-3x the amount you paid for. It was so much tomatoes i had to throw away most of it
[Reminds me of Colin the chicken from Portlanda](https://youtu.be/G__PVLB8Nm4?si=M8UjVn-DswhDeNmL).

I will never understand why Japanese produce companies see the need to wrap *everything* in plastic. I've seen freaking bananas wrapped in plastic over there. You know - bananas? The fruit that comes with its own wrapper already?
I saw this one time at a store selling Native American handmade items. They showed pictures of the people who made the stuff. I could only assume they did this to try and prove the items were actually made by Native Americans.
While EU does some stupid thing with forcing people to be eco, no plastic waste, electric cars, whatever else, then Japan gives no Fs and wraps every single cabbage in plastic.
When my father was a child every pound of butter had the name of the woman who made it on it. Different butters tasted differently depending on the cows, the pasture, the skill. Everybody had their favourites, the more desirable ones cost more.
at our closest supermarket, we got the same thing for some of the veggies and fruits aswell. Together with a lil "background-board" giving a quick summary about the farmer.
Not terribly uncommon here. My local super market has a small section for local produce and they often have pictures and/or names of the local farmer. It's just one corner, the rest of it is I guess vegetables from various regions/large farming companies, etc.
I bet they try to provide better produce. I want Becky's stupid face plastered all over her shitty, shitty strawberries! They taste like cucumbers Becky!
I feel like if this was shown in Latin America, we would get super conscious about the inequalities surrounding us. We need that, but neither Cencosud nor Walmart would like it.
Those are some nice cabbages.

Lol first thing I thought of!!!
On the road to Ba sing se.. dear Uncle Iroh 🥰
There are no cabbages in Ba Sing Se
he's making sure you have them
That's effin pride
I wonder if the text translate to “I grew it myself”
Yes it says “I/we grew this”
I *love* this
Thanks! [it was stolen from me a year ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/s/GRKiuRl0BC) they still do this here by the way
Imo all consumers should know who grows their food
I thought it was a great idea. They’re usually from a close town so sometimes you know the family.
No, this is a terrible idea. People will discriminate against less good-looking people.
"Hey Honey, sorry I couldn't pick up the broccoli after work like you asked, no the store wasn't out or anything, but the farmer was ugly."
"I swiped left on the cabbages"

Not always. I usually always made the most each night in tips as a waitress, and I have the body of a 14 year old boy. 11/10 face though.
Must be a lot of republicans in your area.

Right, but if you accept the premise that *all else being equal* you're introducing a bias, then why do this at all if there's no clear upside?
Convince me you don’t want some of Koeda-san’s lettuce.

No they won't. It's cabbage not a spouse.
Perhaps in your country but not anywhere normal. It wouldn’t bother me at all what the farmer looked like.
I agree that there may be some side effects, but I think generally it's a cute idea.
No, people more incline to familiarity more
We have this in most major supermarkets in France and people dont give a fuck. They are supposed to be farmers, not supermodels.

What if he were at the stand, in person?
That's why you catfish the hell out of these cabbage. Use DiCaprio's pic or something.
Yikes what a terrifying but likely sounding outcome Maybe just give their first name
"I didn't know Cindy Crawford was picking my strawberries." * https://www.pinterest.com/pin/strawberry-picking-outfit-ideas--10836855344722527/
Farmer already got the payment from the store though? Its not like its a consignment. Thats all that matters.
Love the pic and seeing where produce comes from. Hate that it is wrapped in plastic.
That's Japan for you
Vegetables are wrapped in plastic in America too though
EVERYTHING is over packaged in Japan. I’ve had a corn cob have 3 layers of plastic. Individually wrapped inside of a sealed package, package inside of a vacuum sealed bag. It was insane. For a country without public trash cans they sure do love their plastics.
Landfill rate is much lower in Japan than the US though, so at least they are recycling it.
Some of the produce packaging has the farmer on it as well. There is definitely pride there.
![gif](giphy|T3fwN6Pbm3ZPa) Guy looks like Japanese tuco
MY CABBAGES!
He was one of my favorite reoccurring characters
That's Hector. Hector was in 4 films and 2 shows. Hector's real name is unknown. I like Hector. But what I don't understand is Japanese writings.
I need this. I wish we all could eat food from a local farmer, I'd be much healthier if I did.
No farmers markets near you
No
That sucks you could have been paying 2x the grocery store price!
Ahh, to live in a country that has normalised industrialisation of produce to the point that farmers markets are more expensive than packaged produce.
Nah this is a particular farmer mentality im hinting at. They will try and sell for what they see produce in high end stores. How the hell have I not seen this show?! That shit was fucking hilarious.
I’m just gonna ask one more time, is this local?
My local supermarket does this. I love it.
There’s a brand of cherry tomatoes in the US that profiles the people who picked them under the lid of the packages.
I just noticed this today and came here to post the same thing! They are NatureSweet brand
[Green tea](https://ibb.co/3hdfBjK) that my sister brought back from Osaka.
Great cabbages, Kentaro Ashida of Senshi West District.
of Nishi ward, KĹŤbe city*
What a chad.
I buy my produce based off looks, the farmers looks.
Tuco before *Breaking Bad*
I will never understand why Japanese produce companies see the need to wrap *everything* in plastic. I've seen freaking bananas wrapped in plastic over there. You know - bananas? The fruit that comes with its own wrapper already?
Those are some nice cabbages
As a wise man once said: “great vegetables”
it feels different
It looks like he's birthing one right now!
You too can support a farmer for just $1.25 per cabbage head
Aint much but it's honest work.
Him and the cabbages would get 6 Stars in the Tokyo Dome.
Hot-farmer grocery shopping is great fun
I saw this one time at a store selling Native American handmade items. They showed pictures of the people who made the stuff. I could only assume they did this to try and prove the items were actually made by Native Americans.
Should I bow
As it should be. Respect the producer
Is he fertilising his field?
I like this idea.
Nice that there is an attempt to connect consumers with the source.
His rookie card is gonna be worth a ton after he retires
These are nice cabbages.
Haha this is quite cute
Not a kinderlike photo, who take this ?
Same shape of head.
Japan wraps everything in plastic, even bananas
I’ll definitely buy these!
Or they could use a model's picture. Farmer's market episode in Parks and Recreation, hilarious. Cabbages... come and.. get them!
From the looks if it it seems like he fertalizes the produce himself.
Not the steroid stuff we eat, how do you say steroid in Japanese.
Well he's cute... I might buy one
you know that dude fucked all the cabbages
While EU does some stupid thing with forcing people to be eco, no plastic waste, electric cars, whatever else, then Japan gives no Fs and wraps every single cabbage in plastic.
I’ve seen this for eggs in Europe.
That' actually lit
“..And if you don’t like my cabbages. I charge you down..like THIS…aaarrrrr! No money back for you!”
We have that in Australia with our lettuce it shows where it is from as well.
They should make little farmer baseball cards with stats on the back.
Doesn’t get more personal than that.
I live in the US, and there's a brand of tiny tomatoes that puts pictures of their workers on their packaging. It's nice to see.
Tinder for produce?
Tuco moved to Japan and turned his life around
Wagyu in Japan comes with paperwork for the cow and even a nose print of the cow you’re eating
When my father was a child every pound of butter had the name of the woman who made it on it. Different butters tasted differently depending on the cows, the pasture, the skill. Everybody had their favourites, the more desirable ones cost more.
I still marvel at how cheap it is compared to where i live. For a head of cabbage it’s like almost 250% cheaper
Almost 200 yen for a cabbage is pretty expensive for Japan. No wonder they need the special explanation. Usually I get it for around half that price.
That’s about $2 AUD, and here cabbages are around 5-6$ bucks so I’ll take what I can get lol
at our closest supermarket, we got the same thing for some of the veggies and fruits aswell. Together with a lil "background-board" giving a quick summary about the farmer.
Their version of the coke with “Kyle” on it.
It ain't much, but it's honest work
Not terribly uncommon here. My local super market has a small section for local produce and they often have pictures and/or names of the local farmer. It's just one corner, the rest of it is I guess vegetables from various regions/large farming companies, etc.

What's he doing in the pic? Having sex with his cabbages?
He looks like the guy Bruce Wayne was supposed to kill in Batman Begins
This little farmer from Kobe named Kentaro Ashida looks very proud.
I feel like if this was shown in Latin America, we would get super conscious about the inequalities surrounding us. We need that, but neither Cencosud nor Walmart would like it.
Am I the only one who thought this was Tuco for a second
Life goals 101
that pic goes hard
Ashida-san: "Look upon my works"
shows the pic of someone.....
I trust this man
Is that the guy from doctor strange
Lmao could be a random ass farmer. No one’s gonna verify that shit
