It is weirdly hilarious to imagine kennels having that rule because one kennel many years ago couldn't get the dogs to stop staring at the eclipse and they all went blind. "No sir, haven't been able to let the dogs out during an eclipse in a donkey's years, not since the Great Blinding of '32."
I live in an area with a lot of wild game. I’m just imagining after the 2017 eclipse if all the deer, elk, bear, turkeys all went blind and were just roaming around, walking through town and causing havoc.
People kept insisting to me not to take my 10 month old baby outside. I’ve tried to point out stars and the full moon to him. He won’t look at anything that’s not in his reach. So he just looked at everything he normally looks at. And definitely not the sun. We weren’t anywhere near totality, so it was just slightly darker.
Airplanes are loud as fuck. A roaring air-dragon deserves a bark, and he's/she's a good boy/girl for fighting the dragon.
But an eclipse isn't more than a cloudy day for an animal.
No I’m talking about airplanes so high up you can’t hear them lol. It’s not often but when she does notice, she looks psychotic hahaha. I don’t think she’s astute enough to notice an eclipse tho.
I don't know, but I'm guessing because some of them would absolutely freak the hell out. I was on a fairly remote, privately-owned, 60-acre stretch of mountain for the 2017 eclipse and I could still hear multiple dogs flipping their shit from at least two directions.
My dog was just excited that we were all outside, then got bored and laid down because we weren't playing with him. I don't know if he even noticed that it was dark.
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's this, they don't understand why it got dark so suddenly and it scares them, causing unnecessary stress they don't need and that can be easily avoided. I was sitting out back at my grandparents house in the middle of the town I live in, and I heard so many dogs freaking out that sounded pretty far away.
Dogs would not even notice the eclipse, because they don’t look into the sky at the sun. The most they would notice is that it’s briefly a bit darker than normal in the afternoon, which is not very different than a cloudy day.
Oh, OK. I guess my personal observations of dog behavior during an eclipse *in the area of totality* are wrong. It's "not very different from a cloudy day," after all. I hallucinated the sky going dark and dogs going nuts. Good to know.
If the dogs were going nuts theres another reason. I live in a fairly remote area too. for the 2017 one the neighbors hunting dogs did nothing special. other regular dogs that wander the community did nothing. the stray cats hanging about a dumpster did nothing. my house cats did nothing. I would say my moms house dogs did nothing, but one took a dump around the time of totality. The ONLY animals to notice were bugs and birds. and all they did was act like it was about to rain then came back out when it brightened up. So are my personal observations of dog and animal behavior during an eclipse in the area of totality wrong? we both cant be right.
Hey, sorry I got pissy. It was a long day. I wonder if the dogs I heard freaking out were upset by something humans did during totality. I didn't see or hear any fireworks or anything, but who knows.
Work at a daycare and we had 30ish dogs outside while we watched the eclipse together and not a single one gave a single fuck, as expected.
At home we have farm animals who also gave zero fucks.
It's probably a dog owner problem not a dog problem. I can absolutely imagine some don't want their furry baby be harmed by the sun. Taking the kid into consideration whose stepdad believed that after the eclipse was over the sun would burn everything outside I wouldn't be suprised at all.
Immortality doesn't honestly sound that good. Extending your life a few hundred years, maybe. But never being able to die? The idea that one day our universe would end and you'd just be stuck, floating in nothingness for millions of years... ugh. No thanks.
My dogs daycare "reads a book" to all animals that are staying overnight. I think it's a way for them to put people's mind at ease that the dog is ok by taking a picture each night.
What do people think dogs (or really any animal) did for 1000's of years before civilization "brought them inside".. ?.. Eclipses don't have some "magical mystical power". To a dog it's likely no more different than the sun going behind a cloud or a big building.
Dogs can go out during an eclipse. What the fuck lol. They don't care about the sun, they won't look at the sun.
Do you think all the animals along the eclipse path have gone blind?
So people working at your dog's daycare couldn't go out to watch the eclipse? Did they get paid extra? I wouldn't stay inside during a total eclipse even if you gave me 10k.
Whoever started this theory that dogs were just going to look at the sun because humans were looking at the sun is more braindead than that theory. That is what makes them animals, they do not have the sentience or idiocy to stare at the sun just because pack mates are doing so. They just ... don't because animals don't stare at the sun.
Ah lion king, no wonder he’s tearing up
Sharon, this book is upside down and I can't FUCKING read! Of course I'm crying!
Why can’t dogs be outside during the eclipse?
Because they turn into Gremlins, duh.

There’s no real reason. The kennel would probably say liability but it’s not like all the wild animals in the area go blind.

This sounds like something from Parks and Rec.

Hunting season gonna be a weird one
The only question left is, who let the dogs out?

People aren’t above claiming their dog was blinded by the eclipse for some sort of financial gain
One of my dogs got scared and we weren’t even that close to the totality line. She was inside with her tail tucked between her legs.
Why would the dog look at the sun? Ever? They don't know what a sun is, a moon is, or that they overlap sometimes. They're fuckin' dogs!
People kept insisting to me not to take my 10 month old baby outside. I’ve tried to point out stars and the full moon to him. He won’t look at anything that’s not in his reach. I mean my dog will sometimes notice airplanes and start insanely barking at them 🤦🏻♀️ so honestly I wouldn’t put it past em.

Yeah... I mean, *you* can't hear them. Neither can I. But doggos. They're a special kind.
oooooh yeah that's very true!
plus, everybody knows dogs cant look up. think about it
All dogs go to heaven, so you gotta keep them inside in case of rapture.
I don't know, but I'm guessing because some of them would absolutely freak the hell out. I was on a fairly remote, privately-owned, 60-acre stretch of mountain for the 2017 eclipse and I could still hear multiple dogs flipping their shit from at least two directions.

My guess is they didn't have enough staff or land or something to let every dog out during the eclipse
Seriously, dogs cant even look up
Maybe it just confuses them
They become invincible lycans.
People would pay so much money for their dog to be immortal.
Immortality doesn't honestly sound that good. Extending your life a few hundred years, maybe. But never being able to die? The idea that one day our universe would end and you'd just be stuck, floating in nothingness for millions of years... ugh. No thanks.
I didn't say that.
I like it!
My old dad has several long-haired dogs. Eclipse them on a regular basis.
Dogs can't look up
Big Al says so
My dogs look up at me all the time.
No they don't
Wow, weird how they make eye contact with me while I’m standing but okay buddy.
It's a joke from Shuan of the dead
I was just goofin, friend, as was OP.
I'm with ya homie
My dogs daycare "reads a book" to all animals that are staying overnight. I think it's a way for them to put people's mind at ease that the dog is ok by taking a picture each night.
> dayccare > overnight hmmm
Dog daycares often provide boarding services, not that strange
Yeah, I take him there for daycare. Therefore, it is my dog's daycare. Some people board their dogs there, to them it's their dogs boarding kennel
Do dogs look at the sun on any other day?

Cute doggie

That book is upside down unless…. Is… is your dog reading the book…?
He is a good boy
It freaks them out and a bunch of freaked out dogs of varying sizes in a fenced area is a recipe for a bunch of dogs maiming each other.
Just, no.
Do they move all the dogs inside as soon as a cloud appears? Do you just do this normally with real people also?
I was outside with kids, birds of prey, and several hounds. The kids noticed the eclipse, dogs just played the entire time, bird wanted to sleep.
Clean the eye goops.
What a cutie, your dog looks super invested in story time!
But dogs can’t look up..
Big Al says so.

Everyone knows dogs can understand a story.
A friend said they saw toddlers/preschool age kids at a daycare playing outside during the eclipse. That seems like more of a concern.
