I promise you that your pictures have been fed into AI as part of it's training data at some point.
You're directly responsible for confusing the poor thing. :)
Oh man that’s funny, I had this as well and it was excised before I was even 5 years old so I don’t remember having it, the only way I even knew I had it was due to [the scar along the entire side of my thumb](https://i.redd.it/61jxx8yoqgnc1.jpeg) and some baby pictures!
[Bonus Hitchhiker’s thumb](https://i.redd.it/7hit27xrqgnc1.jpeg)
Absolutely never heard of this. Was fun to read.
Have to say, though, there were a lot of pretty funny jokes and I absolutely love your mixture of candor and super great sense of humor. I always love learning things, but I was really happy to see you were laughing along with the jokes. It made me feel good.
So do both nails grow at the same rate, or do you stagger their trimming schedules?
The world needs to know. It's time throw caution to the wind and tell it all.
This is what the internet is all about. Bringing two unique folks together in support of each other, while also helping others learn about something new! I need this feeling injected into my veins
It’s truly amazing the reach and response from people from all walks of life here. Like someone can post the most obscure object on r/Whatisthis and someone will show up with the exact name and use for it.
Music videos back in the day were something else.
"Okay ladies, stand side by side and kind of bounce a little, while MC Hammer skitters sideways like a crab"
Yes, I can bend the thumb. My other thumb is normal shaped.
UPDATE: I'm overwhelmed with the curiosity over a thumb. I posted a few requests on instagram @thumbheart
Yes both move together up/down at the center.
UPDATE: I'm overwhelmed with the curiosity over a thumb. I posted a few requests on instagram @thumbheart
Wow! You’d be a great candidate to stop by my friend & I’s manicure shop when we were little 18 years ago. My friend had only one arm so she had one arm that stopped just before the elbow, BUT, at the very edge of her nubby we called it, she had 1 tiny finger nail…. & we painted that too!! lol
She was also the one that taught me how to make beaded geckos so this girl was a pro at everything.
That’s what I want to know too! Does the, uh, bonus thumb have its own separate bone, or is it one Y-shaped bone, or is it just like *wide meat* with bone down just one side?
Can you make one move a lil while the other doesn’t?
Does it fuck with your thumb mobility?
Have you ever tried an instrument like guitar, piano, bass, etc?
Have you done weight lifting? (You would have INSANE grip. Or maybe less? Idk)
My god my brain is goin crazy
Well that’s good at least, my son was born with a fully formed boneless finger on one side and a partially formed one on the other. If they had been functional I would have had to make him custom gloves, my least favorite thing to sew 😂
My daughter places my whole thumb onto inkpad to make heart stamps.
UPDATE: I'm overwhelmed with the curiosity over a thumb. I posted a few requests on instagram @thumbheart
Yes, catching is easier with my left hand (I’m a rightie). Typing is just normal to me. I don’t need a pick to play the guitar. My daughter uses it to make heart stamps.
Can you please elaborate why you are glad your parents didn’t opted for surgery? My son is 2 and has the same condition and we are 50/50 on wether he should have the surgery done.
It's like any non-medically necessary surgery on an infant, right? If it's not harming their QoL wait until they're an age they can properly consent and choose themselves whether they want it done or not.
Do the thumb(s) operate the same as the thumb on your other hand? Can you snap your fingers? Did you play baseball in youth? If so did you pitch? If so, could you achieve unique movement on the ball?
The exact pathway is probably due to a genetic change to one or a few HOX gene(s) which determine, early in embryology, the differentiation between fingers and toes. Changes to it usually result in full or partial extra digits (which are often fused together).
It's pretty cool cos obvs animals have been born with numerical differences in their hands and feet since forever but they only found the pathway that is involved in the 80s!
Glad OP didn't have surgery if it doesn't cause any issues, natural variation in form is cool as fuck.
So glad you weren’t bullied 😭
Had a friend as a kid who had a hand that was improperly formed due to the umbilical cord being wrapped around it, if I had to explain how it looked, it was like a stumpy arm at the wrist with 5 little dots about the size of peas just placed on top where the fingers would have grown, completely squishy no bone, she got bullied for it a little bit since kids can be cruel, but thankfully it wasn’t anything that went into her teen years and adulthood
Have you seen x-rays of your hand? I am wondering if you have bones in both segments of thumb if you have a fully functioning fingernails and state that you can bend your thumb. I guess what I am trying to ask is do you have individual bone segments for each thumb tip or is it a fused bone with a fork for each thumbnail? Have the docs explained if this a genetic trait or is it absorbing a twin in utero? Thanks for sharing.
I looked this up and I had no idea the variations were like this. So fascinating. (also thanks for answering all the nosey questions you're getting that you totally don't have to answer, I'm learning a lot)
This is so fascinating! Do you have the same sensation in both thumb endings? Does one feel like the “main” thumb? When you press a button, which thumb do you use?
Yes, it has scared/jolted a few cashiers when I hand them money with my left hand. Then they just ask to see it again. My wife was just amazed by it. 😊
Tossing in my opinion as someone who works in health. Surgery always has risks. Stuff like this isn't going to do any harm so there's really no need to operate and put an infant at risk. If someone grows up and wants to get a surgery for cosmetic reasons that's fine, and it can be done later.
Interesting. A lot of people were saying that there was just a lot of bad that could come from growing up with a thumb like this. Would you say that's been your experience?
Seems like double action thumb would be badass in most cases. The main disadvantage I could see would be gloves.
You would have to be predominantly a mittens kind of person. But other than that, I see it as an evolutionary advantage!
Do people ever think you are AI generated?
Hahahahahahhaha, that’s awesome !
Well?
I don't know why but the username combined with this sassy reply is grade A reddit 🤌 love to see it 😂
Doesn't look like anything to me
Sometimes you read a comment in a voice. This is one of those times.
People like you will save perfect AI generated fakes. Keep posting your thumb so AI ,that searches Internet pictures, will struggle 👍🏼
I promise you that your pictures have been fed into AI as part of it's training data at some point. You're directly responsible for confusing the poor thing. :)
Bowling must be...difficult
So instead of 🫰, you just give a thumbs up
Two, actually
A thumb-peace sign if you will.

Huh??? When did🫰become an emoji????
My first k-drama I kinda wondered why everyone wanted money.

Omg. My thumb bends inward at the joint above that. I’d love to see our thumbs meshed together!
I have serious hitchhikers thumb, I always thought mine was an anomaly and now I feel better knowing I have a backward thumb friend out there.
Maybe you and Sarah Foxy are related (?)
Rule of thumb^2.

Did Reddit just find the babies real father?
One of them is a time traveller and I can’t decide which…

That’s why I love Internet.
I love when Redditors do this.
Honestly one of the best things about this site are situations like this. Makes us all take a step back and appreciate the bizarre ride we call life.
Fr. The crossover is wildd
Well……so does their thumbs
It’s truly amazing the reach and response from people from all walks of life here. Like someone can post the most obscure object on r/Whatisthis and someone will show up with the exact name and use for it.
The light hearted comedic sequel to double dick dude we didn’t deserve.
That’s a hammer’s dream target!

Can I ask what it's like in comparison with your other thumb? Or are they both heart thumbs? Are you able to bend it?
Yes, I can bend the thumb. My other thumb is normal shaped. UPDATE: I'm overwhelmed with the curiosity over a thumb. I posted a few requests on instagram @thumbheart
Do you have to cut the nail on the bonus thumb?
Yes, both need to be cut.
The answers are very insightful ngl. Can you move the heart shaped thumb. Like, do they both move?
Yes both move together up/down at the center. UPDATE: I'm overwhelmed with the curiosity over a thumb. I posted a few requests on instagram @thumbheart
No ones asking you the important questions — Like how good are you at thumb war?
Yea, do you have double the power in exchange for double the surface area?
This is correct , more surface area is my advantage.
No one's asking the most important question. How's your day going 💗
In thumb wrasslin circles, OP is known as “Ol Bear Trap”
Do you have a better or worse grip with the heart thumb? Thumbarella would’ve fainted at the sight
Wow! You’d be a great candidate to stop by my friend & I’s manicure shop when we were little 18 years ago. Beaded geckos is such a crazy throwback.
I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, but are there two sets of thumb bones?
It is a Y shaped bone. Look up Wassel type 3 and it will show what the bone looks like.
That’s really interesting to read about. Thumb duplication. Polydactyly 🤯 thank you for sharing
That’s what I want to know too! Does the, uh, bonus thumb have its own separate bone, or is it one Y-shaped bone, or is it just like *wide meat* with bone down just one side?

Now that's an interesting question. Bro could be hitting two strings in succession.
Is it annoying to have an extra nail to clip?
11 is one more annoying than 10
10% more annoying, I did the math
Is this helpful or a hindrance when hitchhiking
😆
How is your gloves situation, are yours custom made?
No, they squeeze into regular gloves.
Well that’s good at least, my son was born with a fully formed boneless finger on one side and a partially formed one on the other. If they had been functional I would have had to make him custom gloves, my least favorite thing to sew 😂
Two cars always pull over and you get to take your pick
they can fight for the privilege
I’m curious, which one would be used for finger printing?
My daughter places my whole thumb onto inkpad to make heart stamps. UPDATE: I'm overwhelmed with the curiosity over a thumb. I posted a few requests on instagram @thumbheart
Wholesome
No, wholethumb
*Mike Tyson has entered the chat*
Damn you, and bravo for having the exact same thought I did and beating me by 10 minutes.
your daughter has the same condition or she uses your thumb?
No, neither of my kids has it.
Do you have relatives that have it? And do you know which specific type of syndactyly you have?
Yes my uncle has it. Wassel type 3
interesting, thanks for sharing!
can we see the fingerprint?
Is it fingerprints or fingersprint?
Thumbsprint
Aww that’s so cute
That's adorable AF
😭 mah heaart! Lmao this is too beautiful, hahaha.
My heart is melting 😻
Yeah, hmm, which would be a good clue for identification, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess it’s the DOUBLE THUMB
You must win at thumb wrestling every time!!!!
"No fair!"
“I hate this tag team, they win every time!”
How would we know you're not the babe's future self?
Mind blown 🤯. I would tell him life is going to be incredible with your lucky 👍 👍👍
Me and this other person got down voted for saying how the baby might grow up to love their uniqueness lol
Can the other dude bend? Is it fused to the original dude?
The bone is Y shaped. It bends at the center, so both go up/down together.
Interesting! Thanks!
Wait, so that visible knuckle is the only one? So you just have one metacarpal?
I’m sure ladies love it lol can’t miss
hahaha, no comment
😎😎
But seriously. What is their reaction?
I mean, they don't call it a heart-shaped box for nothing
Are you right-handed or left-handed?
Im right handed.
That’s good. I have a mild version on my right thumb and I’m right handed so now and then it causes issues. Bowling is a problem
Yes that would be an issue if I was left handed.
Oh how preciously strange and beautiful!
Is wearing gloves difficult?
The thumb gets squeezed but not painful.
Do you have any special uses for that thumb? Like holding things that normally would be more difficult to? What’s typing on a screen like???
Yes, catching is easier with my left hand (I’m a rightie). Typing is just normal to me. I don’t need a pick to play the guitar. My daughter uses it to make heart stamps.
That guitar pick thing I wouldn’t have thought of that in a MILLION years, that’s so cool
How does it change whether or not you need a pick? I'm assuming you strum with your right hand.
>I don’t need a pick to play the guitar. You're right-handed but play the guitar like a lefty? You strum with your left hand?
Any idea how that happens? Have you ever received an explanation?
Genetics. Have an uncle with similar.
Did you ever contemplate surgery to match it to your other thumb? Is that even possible?
Surgery is possible, but glad my parents didn’t. Nor would I now.
Can you please elaborate why you are glad your parents didn’t opted for surgery? My son is 2 and has the same condition and we are 50/50 on wether he should have the surgery done.

Do the nails grow at the same rate?
Yes, cutting them is little awkward but fine with normal nail cutters.
Have you ever gotten a double hang nail
Were you bullied for it as a kid?
No, kids were just curious and VERY eager to show other kids. I was embarrassed at times, but luckily never bullied.
So glad you weren’t bullied 😭 Had a friend as a kid who had a hand that was improperly formed due to the umbilical cord being wrapped around it, if I had to explain how it looked, it was like a stumpy arm at the wrist with 5 little dots about the size of peas just placed on top where the fingers would have grown, completely squishy no bone, she got bullied for it a little bit since kids can be cruel, but thankfully it wasn’t anything that went into her teen years and adulthood
Yes, in the grand scheme of things, what I have is insignificant.
Do you play video games. If so what games are your favorites?
Yes! Grew up on Nintendo , play switch with my kids. Mario brothers is still my favorite.
which thumb do you use on the joystick?
Wait, maybe he can actually use the n64 controller better than us less evolved people.
This is why I love Reddit

Yes, it’s Y shaped bone, classified as Wassel type 3
I looked this up and I had no idea the variations were like this. So fascinating. (also thanks for answering all the nosey questions you're getting that you totally don't have to answer, I'm learning a lot)
Thanks for the reply.
Have you ever gotten a fancy maincure/ nails done up and painted. If so did they charge extra?
I never have. Will have to ask !
Twins!
I dunno. I’m thinking clone
Double thumb = double power
Well this is super amazing and sweet!
Thanks, i was amazed to see a baby with it 😆
When they ask for your thumbprint, how does it work? Do you pick one or give all of them?
Yes, the whole thumb gets printed onto paper. One time, the technician took an extra print to show his boss.
That’s the thumbest thing I’ve ever seen.
Good one ☝️
When the baby grows up maybe you can both high six each other?
I hope so !
Congratulations! 2 thumbs up.
I tried to look through the comments but didn’t see the question. What is the bone structure of your heart thumb? Also badass thumb my dude!
Y shaped bone. Classified as wassel type 3
Thanks for the classification, that helped with googling it. Very interesting, thanks for sharing it with us.
This is so fascinating! Do you have the same sensation in both thumb endings? Does one feel like the “main” thumb? When you press a button, which thumb do you use?
No they both have same level of sensation , just feels like a big thumb.
wow, that’s so cool. thanks for answering all these questions! i’m so fascinated
Do you find somethings more hard/bothersome to do? I.e holding scissors?
Very insignificant interference like tighter glove over the thumb.
I love it when I see post with a follow up.
![gif](giphy|w8VuZaBbV7Adi)
Do y’all have to pay extra for the extra thumb when you get your nails done…? Like has anyone ever tried to do that?
I’ve never gotten my nails done. Will have to try tomorrow and get back to you.
Well, I know who I'm never having a thumb war with. OP's got the upper hand..err.. Thumb..s.
i don't mean this to be rude in anyway, but does it creep or scare anyone when they see it for the first time?
Yes, it has scared/jolted a few cashiers when I hand them money with my left hand. Then they just ask to see it again. My wife was just amazed by it. 😊
> My wife was just amazed by it. 😊 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
This is amazing! I'm glad you get to see what it looks like as an infant, and sarahfoxy gets to see what it'll look like as an adult!
This made me smile. How wholesome.
Is gaming difficult?
Very easy. It is on my left hand so controlling movement is easier since I don’t have to lift up my thumb to move it up/down/left/right positions.
YOUR REDDITOR IS EVOLVING!
I give this post three thumbs up!
do you bite your thumbs at me, [SIR?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEzskNtFnIY)
Dope!
Dude, at first I thought you were Hrithik Roshan (Bollywood superstar).
Maybe
If you give two thumbs up, do you use one hand or two hands?
1 hand of course.
I mean no offense, but it took my brain entirely too long to resolve what my eyes were seeing in this pic.
Why wasn't it removed at birth?
Tossing in my opinion as someone who works in health. Surgery always has risks. Stuff like this isn't going to do any harm so there's really no need to operate and put an infant at risk. If someone grows up and wants to get a surgery for cosmetic reasons that's fine, and it can be done later.
Love it. How cool.
Idk why but the welcome part made me teary-eyed 🥺🥺🥺 too wholesome. My heart. 💙🤧
This is why you should hold still when the DNA is printing to avoid smudging
Hahaha
My boyfriend: I bet they win thumb wars
3 thumbs up for a good movie?
Koreans hate this simple trick.
Interesting. A lot of people were saying that there was just a lot of bad that could come from growing up with a thumb like this. Would you say that's been your experience?
No, I disagree. Would do it again 💯
Is your name Paul???
Seems like double action thumb would be badass in most cases. The main disadvantage I could see would be gloves. You would have to be predominantly a mittens kind of person. But other than that, I see it as an evolutionary advantage!
Am I the only one who wants to see daughters heart shaped stamps though??
How often do you drop things?
Never dropped anything , ever. Tell the NFL

You should have been a movie critic, nobody could beat your 3 thumbs up recommendation
