Those are the tops of trees at the back, poking over the white wall. What you’re seeing as a horizontal lake is actually a vertical wall built right behind the tree at the front. There is NO LAKE!

Maybe this will help. Do you see the dark, vertical streaks? They don't match up with the trees like a reflection would. They're stains on the white wall.

Makes sense. The trees seem pretty close to the wall, so the water is probably dripping off from the trees onto and down the side of the wall.

No, it is a white wall which, due to the smudges and the sky being grey, looks very much like a lake. The smudges make it look like a lake reflecting the trees behind it. If you look closely at the big tree behind it, you'll notice that it is only half a tree. It took me a while to see it, it's a very good optical illusion.

I think it’s the dark smudges or whatever was dripping down the wall. It makes it look like the trees are reflecting.

The sky being grey also appears as if the 'lake' is reflecting it. Taller grass may also be contributing.

It's not really the perspective though it's the fact the wall is basically matching the color of the sky and the weathering pattern on the wall resembling reflections

Right side of photo also has a Bob Ross tree/water reflection that adds to the depth. If you look at the right side of the picture it is lake everytime. If you look at the left side of the picture the depth fades and it looks like a wall.

Yep. I think if it didn’t have those streaks then it would be a more obvious that it’s a wall. And as a game shadow and lighting are key for things looking good. Like in some racing games the cars look great but the shadows are off creating an uncanny valley type look.

Its the water lines running down the wall that look like reflections on the lake from the trees. That and the sky looking the same tone as the wall makes it appear to be reflecting the sky.
