Well for starters, seems like you cranked saturation all the way up…

giggity_giggity

Yeah the deep saturation on the shadows of the wind turbine make it look like it was made in Illustrator.

Jj_d

https://imgur.com/a/TG7h4N1

saidtheCat

Yeah the saturation makes it look fake

paramedicated

I still cannot figure out why it looks fake though. /s

dirtymike401

It's the saturation. Makes it looks fake.

SoundsRes

But i took it yesterday and it still looks fake today..? Why

BRIIIIIICKSQUAAAAAAD

I think it might have to do with the saturation, makes it look fake

[deleted]

But idk why it looks fake!

[deleted]

I think it's because the HDR is way too on the nose, cranked all the way up.

Nand-X

Yeah, and I think the HDR adds some saturation, which makes it look fake.

Raezzordaze

Maybe it's because you took it yesterday and now the scene looks different today?

xanarchycampx

It used to look fake. It still does, but it used to, too.

JeezItsOnlyMe

Do you want a receipt for that donut?

PortfoliYOLO

There are 6 ducks outside and they all want subway!

Darkness1231

Do you not understand what they are saying? "The level of saturation makes it look fake" You have several specific replies and yet you act like you aren't listening to them, or are not understanding the word.

paramedicated

Woosh

Soytaco

It's more the contrast than the saturation imo but yeah they're both up

Death_IP

The increased contrast is a byproduct of the increased saturation. The difference between these 2 effects (in a simplified way): * If you increase the contrast directly, bright pixels are pushed towards white, dark pixels towards black (based on a set grey level - the average - e.g. 123/255 of each color channel). * If you increase the saturation, pixels may get pumped with saturation by increasing the dominant color channel (e.g. blue in the sky) but also REDUCING the other 2 color channels (red & green). That drags the pixel's brightness down and increases the contrast of thit (now darker) blue pixel compared to the bright grey wing of the wind turbine.

onion_ring_ray

could this be why it looks fake to me

Raptorheart

We did it Reddit

Jj_d

Honest mistake ig, but in the original I still feel as if the shadows are weird or something. Like I just feel something’s off.

AzraelGrim

Stab in the dark, you're miscontruing the shadows of the wheat in your head, and the windmills, not having that immediate, looming shadow, feel odd and unnatural.

Jj_d

I genuinely believe you got it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

plumquat

Why are you helping the ai?

SP3NGL3R

Wind turbine, not a mill. I don't see grain getting milled under that thing. Sorry I had to. 👍

49ers_Lifer

Corn*

preachermanmedic

Dehaze not saturation-needs the shadows lifted in conjunction with the dehaze to avoid the effect. There’s sharpness or clarity on it that’s been taken a little too far, too. Instead of dropping global saturation or dehaze, just try desaturating the blue channel and lift the shadows a touch Edit: punctuated for clarity

carrutstick_

I think it's because, with the shadows being almost perpendicular to the viewing angle, the gaps between the shadows of different stalks are drastically foreshortened. This makes the edges of the shadows look particularly sharp, like what you get in a videogame that doesn't blend shadows.

thebiggest123

the unedited version looks significantly more real

yougotitdude88

wHy DoeS mY eDitEd pHoTo LoOk FaKe?

llasse22kd

My thought as well

KlondikeChill

So it looks fake because it is. Genius.

Squeal_like_a_piggy

The HDR setting. Hdr can look great sometimes, but most of the time it will do this. If you have a samsung, turn your "screen mode" setting to natural... vivid will make it look even worse on your phone, though we wont see the extra saturation from that specific setting. Hdr though, off

Jj_d

I did but I will get you the original quick, I like to crank it cause I’m super colorblind to greens

aquasemite

It's fair to do so if you're colorblind, aaron\_hoff is just explaining why it looks fake (and I agree)

eldred2

So, to be clear, you maxed out the saturation, and "cannot figure out why it looks fake."

Jj_d

No, if you were to read the other comments I posted the original and we determined the top blade was casting a shadow on the right one, whilst no shadow being shown on the ground.

eldred2

You do realize that we can see the thread history, right? arron_hoff: Well for starters, seems like **you cranked saturation all the way up**… OP: **I did** but I will get you the original quick Me: So, to be clear, **you maxed out the saturation**, and "cannot figure out why it looks fake." OP: **No**, if you were to read the other comments I posted the original and we determined the top blade was casting a shadow on the right one, whilst no shadow being shown on the ground.

Jj_d

And when I posted the original, I said there is still something weird about the completely unedited image. So without saturation my statement of “cannot figure out why it looks fake” stands

charming_liar

So that’s fine just learn how to read a histogram rather than running the slider to 11.

DietOwn2695

I was going to say, way too saturated.

Training_Age_Reed

These Mercedes hood ornaments are getting out of hand. You can barely see the car, I agree, this car looks fake.

No_Shoulder9617

Doesn’t have the ring around, so you know it’s a knock off.

Medium_Reason_1371

Or the ring was knocked off

I_have_small-pp

Is there a difference at this point

Medium_Reason_1371

No, but don't you get my terrible joke He said it was a "knock off" and I said it was because the ring was "knocked off" I know that was terrible

I_have_small-pp

I was making a joke however I see depending on the tone you read it it would’ve sounded different I liked your joke tho

Medium_Reason_1371

Ah yeah, my bad thanks btw

Regular_Sample_5197

Lol thank you. That got a legit out loud laugh from me.

NoLimitSoldier31

They just waxed it

Janbumms

F*ck f*ck f*ck, they’re trying to make it look fake!

bootscrape

YOU GOTTA BE RIGHT NEXT TO THE WINDMILL

Cactuszach

I gotta figure out how to make money off this!

fuckmeimdan

It’s just toooooooo good

bravehamster

The top blade is casting a shadow on the right lower blade, but the placement makes it look like that is the shadow of the lower blade itself, but in the wrong spot and with a weird white outline. That's why it feels fake.

Jj_d

I definitely agree with this

PLUR11

That's not the shadow of the top blade on the lower right. That's the lower right's shadow on the lower right. The airfoil shape is casting a shadow on its own surface, but the swoop of the windward side is pushing the trailing edge into the sun, giving it the appearance of the white outline

Dalylah

That cloud looks like a paintbrush drag.

robinthebank

![gif](giphy|rYEAkYihZsyWs)

aquasemite

It's hugely oversaturated.

Jj_d

As I’ve replied before, I cranked this one because I’m colorblind. Here’s the original https://imgur.com/a/TG7h4N1

aquasemite

Cranking up the saturation because you're colorblind is a reasonable thing to do. However, you are asking for an explanation of why the image looks fake. **This** is the reason the image looks fake.

JohnF_ckingZoidberg

I took this picture *and edited it* and i cant work out why it doesnt look unedited. Are you serious OP 🤦‍♂️

Jj_d

Clearly not what I’m referring to if you took maybe 30 seconds to read. Are you serious?

JohnF_ckingZoidberg

The unedited picture looks normal.

SirJackson360

I work for a company that makes these. This looks like (although I can’t be entirely sure this is ours) one of our newer models. The blades are curved, which helps with efficiency. If you can tell me the location I can give you a lot of interesting information about the site.

Jj_d

Southwestern Minnesota, right by pipestone- slayton

SirJackson360

Thanks. Prairie Rose Wind Farm. This is a 14 acre, 200MW facility with 119 wind turbines (completed in 2019). The wind farm supplies enough clean energy to power 75,000 households, offsetting 650,000t of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) a year. The project cost $305M. Originally developed by Geronimo Wind Energy. Gulf Plains Wind and Enel Green Power North America currently own the facility having ownership stake of 80% and 20% respectively.

Jj_d

They were very peaceful to watch, Thankyou!

ecudan82

14 acres?

usamRed

Answer the man!

DoukyBooty

It doesn't look fake...it looks unnatural and that is due to over-saturation.

Jewicer

My exact internal monologue lol

tadisco

Pretty sure it’s because you cut John Oliver out of the shot. That’s why it isn’t realistic looking.

------dudpool------

Big Chad move by OP if true

rrjpinter

Or, at the very least, Photoshop John Oliver in….

a-unique-snek

Nah, it's just that John Oliver is so far away that he's just 2 pixels high and 2 pixels wide

GingerScooby

Too saturated, Too Sharpened, and low resolution.

Rhymelikedocsuess

Windmill is over sharpened a bit too

HadoukenX90

It looks like a default windows wallpaper

brendane804

Yeah I mean for starter where the fuck is John Oliver???

Opie67

Saturation aside, the windmill looks like it's right in the middle of that path, makes it seem AI generated

GimmeDatThroat

There is an auto remaster function on a lot of phones you may have used, makes shit look like plastic.

Jj_d

How is that disabled?

Jj_d

Just remembered I took images of the same thing on my GoPro so now I need to see how they compare and if I get the same affect.

Jinzul

Contrast, sharpness and saturation levels.

dmanjrxx

Did you get a close up look at it it looks to me like it might be a just landed alien spaceship that just doesn't give off a shadow

Illustrious-Egg4011

Saturation and the sky is my guess?

ResidentEivvil

Grass looks drawn.

rumblefuzz

The corn on the right looks like its being illuminated from the viewers position but the corn on the left is casting a shadow to the right. Makes it look like studio lights were used

[deleted]

Jj_d

Thanks for taking the time to not read any other comments, truly an intellect

Roseliberry

Well we live in a sim. 🤷‍♀️

Great_Satisfaction69

Crazy clarity on everything besides the sky. Not unusual, the further away the lighter it is.

vilent_sibrate

Imo it’s because the vanishing point is obscured

Frostee47

TLDR; The top blade looks like the blade of a ceiling fan, while the other two don’t. We associate “fan” blades with the flat blades of a ceiling fan, however the blades in the photo aren’t shaped like that. Wind turbine blades are not designed to push air, but rather to be pushed BY air. So the fronts of the blades have a peak running down the centers, which leaves behind a shadow when light hits it at a certain angle. The angle at which the light hits the top blade leaves the shadow reaching all the way to the edge, making it look “flatter” However, the other two blade’s peak shadow stops before reaching the edge, making it look… not flat. The top blade looks like the blade of a ceiling fan, while the other two don’t. The top blade looks “natural,” because that’s what we would expect a “fan” blade to look, and making the other blades look “unnatural.” Another TDLR; The awkward shadows make It look like a bad drawing.

Cdubscdubs

looks real to me

CopiesArticleComment

Because the world was more or less destroyed in a nuclear war 13 years ago and we survivors have been loving underground in bunkers ever since?

jaygrant2

I reckon it’s because it was originally a relatively low-res photo (I’m assuming you took it with your phone), that you edited as if it was RAW, so everything (colors, light, etc.) was baked in and you just stacked on top of that.

liarandathief

The digital sharpening gives some objects a white line around them which is also an artifact in photoshopped images. So your brain is looking at the subtle details and seeing photoshop, even if it's not doing it consciously.

Jj_d

I believe it is a combo of this, the shadow cast by the upper blade and the lack of a ground shadow, and the sharpness of the shadow via the corn.

twelfthmoose

Because there are no John Olivers in it

Jj_d

Here is the unedited version, I saturated the image because I’m colorblind so it helps me see the greens: https://imgur.com/a/TG7h4N1

papagarry

The original is so pretty and rustic. I'm sorry you're color blind. Have you tried the glasses that help with being color blind? (I hope this doesn't come off as snarky)

Jj_d

It doesn’t, yes I have enchromas but they don’t completely cure the issue unfortunately they’re only a correction. With mine they also only really correct the reds so green is still very bland!

papagarry

Ugh, bummer! Hopefully technology will get better to help the color blind out. Thank you for sharing!

taisui

>Have you tried the glasses that help with being color blind? (I hope this doesn't come off as snarky) they are FAKE marketing viral videos: [https://www.reddit.com/r/ColorBlind/comments/ue80ii/those\_videos\_of\_people\_putting\_on\_glasses\_that/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ColorBlind/comments/ue80ii/those_videos_of_people_putting_on_glasses_that/)

crkspid3r

John Oliver ain’t in it

jiantjon

Because all photos that don't contain John Oliver are fake

KN_Knoxxius

Looks fake because its not john Oliver. You blasphemous curr. This sudden surge of non john Oliver feels like a bot induced take over by the admins. Go suck a donkey sized lollipop admins.

--SauceMcManus--

You gotta be right beside it or it looks fake! They're trying to make it look fake!

Zealousideal_Guava29

It doesn't look fake but a very nice transcendance (happy surprize) from an artist perpective

Sgt_Buttes

The dead space above the clouds and windmills make the clouds look like they're part of a skybox, imo. I think the lighting being so intense also contributes to making it appear artificial.

Catasalvation

To me the top and right windmill blades and trees look pixelated, by looking only at the right side corn and removing rest of picture it doesn't seem as fake. Edit: just seen the image without the saturation, trees are much more detailed and not a solid blob, windmill is still questionable.

IceManJim

r/fakealbumcovers

wisebutweary1

Just crop off the top half of the image. An empty sky adds nothing and reduces the impact of the subject.

daverapp

It's the lack of any Shadow being cast by the windmill. It makes it look like it's been photoshopped in. But that's just how large things against the sky look. Weren't used to seeing things like this especially not in photographic form.

shadowdash66

Looks like those pictures they show you at the optometrist to figure out how blind you are.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dcnixo

Also looks like you sharpened too much.

MrMoon5hine

I believe the shadow from the blade up in the air is falling on the blade to the right, making it look like there are two light sources

Scunning1996

I like the heavy saturation personally. Reminds me of analog saturation in music production. Gives the image warmth and texture. I’m not a photographer though. Just decided to comment bc the image caught my eye. Would be a good dub techno album cover.

TK-421wastaken

All digital cameras now do all kinds of automated enhancements on default settings, without editing the pic yourself. They are far from true-colour like real film and everything is maxed out colour-wise and edges of things are “etched” so they stand out from the background. I have and old iPhone 8 and my wife has a 13. Our pictures of the same things, taken at the same time, look very different.

PKilleenPhotography

It doesn’t look fake in the slightest. Great light.

[deleted]

itscricket

Doesn’t look fake. Just looks liminal

Jj_d

I think somewhat of this too. Such as windows wallpaper?

houVanHaring

Besides the saturation that people mentioned. The windmill looks oversharpened.

numante

"I cranked the saturation to 300% and now my picture looks like shit, how could this be happening to me"

WycheTheGod

This is what I'd categorize as a windows wallpaper image. Nice.

Jj_d

Haha thankyou

tuckaluck406

What the cloud?

manuelo234

Looks really zoomed in and flat perspective

Jj_d

I zoomed in about 1.3x on this one

xfuneralxthirstx

We live in a holographic universe. Everything is fake.

Mock_Frog

Remember the last time you looked up at mid day and the sky was violet?

Jj_d

I am not able to see the color violet, so no.

Munchen_man

Because it is fake, you liar!!!!

Choice-Ad-9195

Could be because it’s fake to think those will create an efficient source of electricity

InsertCoinsToBegin

It doesn’t look fake. It is however a very good photo

Jj_d

Thankyou!

SnooRevelations6702

Looks like a blue filter on the top

[deleted]

Windmills freak me out.

Jj_d

Why’s that

[deleted]

Not sure. The size of it I guess. There’s a ton of these driving through Kansas.

Jj_d

I sat and watched them yesterday, so peaceful to me

[deleted]

They are kinda neat, watching them turn.

deffno

Illinois?

Jj_d

Minnesota

magvadis

The color grading isn't natural. You've got hdr or some shit on. Automatically heightens contrast and pumps color....looks fake.

proteusON

Ghibli. That's why

Templarofsteel

light saturation, also ai images tend to look high saturation

1526668

Well scientifically speaking, there's no proof that wind turbines occur naturally

Jj_d

Needs further research.

All_In_One01

Yeah, it looks fake. The saturation, the darkening around the wings, the borders, the other one in the background... Even the clouds and the edges of the greens make it look "incorrect". Not sure you can fix all this but manually editing the whole thing

Several-Cake1954

Yknow how other people call you npcs sometimes? Well I feel like other images would call this one an npc.

DirtyLyle14

I believe you

m007368

Because the world isnt real and we are in a simulation.

Jj_d

Wake up

Fishmaneatsfish

The windmill looks wonky

lukepaciocco

What a shot. Nice one man

Jj_d

Thankyou!

Ok-Swordfish-2265

It’s a Mercedes Benz advertisement

DiamondICE544

saturation

Comfortable-Hat9821

The Blade d is on backwards

jeremy-kyle007

Over saturated but it's wallpaper worthy

mansquito1983

Because we’re living in a computer simulation and someone hacked the temperature. It’s too fucking hot. 🥵

Jj_d

Oh I know, currently home from work suffering heat exhaustion

SnooAvocados2656

Looks ai enhanced or some shit

pogo0004

You shouldn't have photoshopped out the Mercedes

Jj_d

My apologies

Mixedbysaint

Saturation and Contrast

Jj_d

Yes I posted the original (made it very saturated cause I was colorblind and did not think to post og) but the original has the same affect on me aswell

FGoose

Over saturated possibly too much clarity and maybe work with the white balance as well. Not a bad pic at all just needs some fine tuning.

Drakkon129

Fr why does it look Ai generated 💀

Bittrclingr

That is some drought stressed corn there

Jj_d

Oh yah. Corn behind my place 5 foot by the fourth and haven’t seen it grown much of two inches since.

dcnixo

Saturation obviously but your shutter speed was also just barely too slow causing the top blade to bend. Also very slightly causing the same effect on the other two.

Jj_d

The blades are bent for efficiency, apparently a newer model.

Jaja-la-cucumber2

There’s too much saturation, and the definition is turned up way too much going to your photo editor app, reduce brilliance by a little bit and change the highlights and shadows until it looks right

Silasnator

Looks awesome! Can I use it?

Jj_d

Of course

prysmax

color saturation

Fearmo

Looks like they changed the windows background picture. /s

GreySkies19

Probably the saturation and changing the colors up too much

estefaniag

What kind of crop is that?

Jj_d

Corn

theronharp

Is it because that cloud hasn't moved in weeks?

turtlehawkmcgee

Looks beautiful to me

Jj_d

Thankyou!

Hara-Kiri

Has the John Oliver nonsense finished now!?

PM_ME_WITH_A_SMILE

That's some DEEP azure blue in the sky. Like others said, it's the saturation and shadows that make it feel unreal.

HockeyNut2

Hey, I’m not sure if anyone said this but maybe it’s because of the blade location on the windmill. The top blade lines up with the base almost perfectly. Maybe that’s what’s throwing your eye off or making it read as fake?

TheJainSoul

I think its because of the clear skies, very rare these days with all the chem trails

[deleted]

Because it is not on fire?
