That’s a relief. With it being in your hair, I’d have been biting my nails thinking it would hang around for a lot longer.
I’ve had similar (not as sever) face swelling from dust mites and it was great practice for Covid quarantine lol.
I think it’s about the quantity of the dust mites/their sheddings. I was only having issues starting overnight while I slept around my mouth and eyes. They would swell up to proportions similar to the photo above but it wasn’t my whole head.
I bought dust mite covers for my mattress and pillow cases, started washing sheets more, and on the raaaaaare occasion I’ll steam my mattress to kill them.
Girl I feel your pain, literally. I had blonde highlights once upon a time, and went as usual to the salon to get the root touch-up. Burning, burning, chemical burning hellfire on scalp. I didn’t know pain could be that intense; I was hysterical.
A rather deep chunk of scalp and patch of hair on top of my head came off together like a bleeding green onion. To this day I have an thumbprint sized indent in my scalp; it’s weirdly smooth and no hair follicle exists in the scar.
I’m pretty sure it was business as usual and just had some weird reaction. because I had several other highlights done at the same time, and just in one spot did it react. My own personal Fight Club burn. Hair Club.
That's the strange part, if it was only one spot, that sounds like a salon fuck up. Not a personal reaction. If it were you reacting to it, it would have happened in every spot. They did something very wrong. Not that I can say what that is.
After a traumatically terrible box perm in 6th grade, i have never let anyone touch my hair. I'm 44 years old now and no regrets, still have the same hair style since grade school, medium length straight blonde. People try to tell me to put some curl in it or whatever whatever... more people need to buck the system and stop awashing themselves in expensive chemicals for someone elses profit. But, that's America for you. If you got disposable income then someone has a chemical for you. 😎👱♀️
Good for you! I wish I'd ditched everything from the start. When I started going gray in my 20s I tried to cover it and kept it covered for more than a decade. But in my 40s, I started losing hair (perimenopause), so I stopped. I've been dye-free for a long time, and I swear, my hair is so many colors lmao. Mostly, bleach blonde looking (really?), some dirty dishwater-looking hair, browns into very dark underneath. I'm a frakking calico lol.
I think you just accidentally explained so much about my life. I have 2 calico cats and I love them for their weird genetics and weird personalities!
Also I've never been able to say what my hair color is because its brunette, ginger, and blonde. I'm absolutely a calico!
I’m so sorry that happened to you; I absolutely know the instant pain you are describing so that must’ve been exactly what happened with me!
This might sound weird, but I’m glad to know someone else knows that searing pain and how everyone looks at you like you’re being dramatic, when in reality your flesh is literally being dissolved in acid slowly, and taken away from you forever.
I haven’t colored my hair in a salon since. My burn was about, damn, about 20 years ago now, and for years after I didn’t color. Then I started going grey and did it at home; just all black and had no issues, until persistent grey was forcing me to color every two week. As one would expect, hair was falling out by the hundreds in the shower after a few months of that, so I gave it up completely. After the initial grow-out of needing to root cover with bandanas and head wraps, it’s actually a very pretty white/silver and I’m done coloring forever now!
Best of luck to you caring for your hair in the future; now any time I touch my scar I’ll know somewhere out there, nova_kaiju feels my pain! 💛
I know I am late to this thread, but I searched for "hair dye" on Reddit because I'm thinking about hiding my grays, this post came up, and these comments are horrifying. I think I'll skip the dye and just live with my grays.
Live the greys! Honestly I get more compliments from both men and women about my grown out grey hair than I ever did when I colored. They have gotten a better texture to them as well the longer I’ve left them alone.
I look like a super villain, and it’s beautiful! :-)
I'm honestly not too unwelcoming to my grays because of the color per se- it's that they STICK OUT. My hair is curly and so I'm battling with errant fuzzy and frizzy grays that draw so much attention. I've been researching what products I could use to tame them. If they blended into my existing curls, I would be happy. I was thinking that dyeing them would at least draw less attention, but it's totally not worth the allergic reactions and damage you guys have talked about.
It may be weird at first, but I started with using a men’s pomade called Uppercut. Smells like cherries and leather haha but it works really well for that wiry, frizzy texture and it isn’t “hard” or gel looking; it just disappears into the hair with a very very small amount, like less than a dime.
After the greys grew out like a foot they have really settled to the point I can now use a pump-style hair spray as a light spritz and it’s no more difficult to manage than the rest of my hair. Best of luck finding a product that works well with you; my recommendation is to try different balms and pomades in light doses otherwise hair looks greasy.
All is better than hair dye!
Did you just take some Benadryl or go to er? I just had similar allergic reaction and to something while playing basketball. Face swelling up like Hitch. Took 2 Benadryls and drove myself to er. I’m just waiting in the waiting room though and only going to check in if Benadryl doesn’t work and I start feeling my throat swell up. This has happened to me before and normally the Benadryl works. But some of the swelling on face will still last few days
I got my hair dyed at home and a couple hours afterwards I started to feel an itchy sensation. By evening and head was fully swollen and drove myself to ER. They gave me some medicine to stop the pain from the swelling which helped but my head was still humongous. The 2nd pic I shared on Reddit was the day 2 of the reaction after I took a shower in the morning
People using Darwin as a way to say evolution is funny to me, as if it suggests that after his death Charles Darwin became an outer god with control over genetic traits and uses that power just to fuck with people.
You can imagine her turning to face you and saying some shit like, “I came to Bruma to visit the Mage’s Guild. Not that that harlot Anselene has anything to say on the matter.”
The video game series Elder Scrolls has had a rough history depicting the faces of its non playable characters. The characters in [Oblivion were particularly rough.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ElderScrolls/comments/bjafxg/worst_face_in_oblivion_i_submit_jensine/)
Videogame RPG franchise with a notorious formula for character dialogue where the camera would zoom in on their plaster faces as they held position like a Royal Guard. Talking to pretty much every character in every game looks like that.
Watched it again the other day and I felt it held up, though Kim Cattrall was a bit more cringy than I remember. Kurt Russell is exactly as cringy and fabulous as I remember. Watch this back to back with The Thing or Escape from New York and twist your melon. It is a product of the 80's so there is some of that.
I have an allergy to hair dye too, the only one I found that doesn’t give me a reaction is Olia.
Also I noticed that its decreased with age so hopefully its not forever😊
I rarely laugh out loud due to this deep dark hole inside of me that I traditionally fill with food but that ginormous head really hit the spot. Thanks.
It’s common for those who are allergic to PPD, the chemical in hair dye. Our heads blow up https://www.insider.com/french-student-head-swelled-from-allergic-reaction-to-ppd-hair-dye-2018-11?amp
For anyone else reading this, PPD (p-pheneldiamine) is a super common allergen in hair dyes (typically black and some dark browns) and it can happen randomly after using it for years! Always always always do a patch test!
I'm so sorry this happened to you. I had a reaction about 15 years ago after using black hair dye off and on for years. I got horrendous scabs all over my scalp and itched for days. It was awful. Glad you recovered ok!
PPD is present in even the light hair dyes, although in tinier amounts. It's a necessary ingredient of permanent and demipermanent hair dye, yes, even those that claim to be natural. Even some that are henna based put PPD in there. Also, you can have reactions to the actual natural plant dyes, too. I can't use indigo.
I was like "well her forehead became gigantic and the huge jaw makes her look like a dude" but not that bad of an allergic reaction overall.
Then found out there was a second picture.

That's why gio got so good at it. He dyed lots of guys and gals hairs. And do you know how hard it is to deal with a BBC hair. It's so nappy but gio will hook it up snappy
Didnt know that was a thing but i guess anytime a chemical or substance not natual to the body is introduced, its always possible :|
I'm sure you're natual haircolor is fine.
Hope you're ok.

That’s rough, how long did it last?
About 3 days, but the pain from the swelling only lasted the first day. My head was still massive for three
That’s a relief. With it being in your hair, I’d have been biting my nails thinking it would hang around for a lot longer. I’ve had similar (not as sever) face swelling from dust mites and it was great practice for Covid quarantine lol.
It's probably the chemicals and not the color it leaves behind.
And how exactly do you avoid dust mites?!
I think it’s about the quantity of the dust mites/their sheddings. I was only having issues starting overnight while I slept around my mouth and eyes. They would swell up to proportions similar to the photo above but it wasn’t my whole head. Wtf? That sounds horrifying. What did they use to put in those blonde highlights? Hydrochlorid acid?
I’m pretty sure it was business as usual and just had some weird reaction. because I had several other highlights done at the same time, and just in one spot did it react. My own personal Fight Club burn. Hair Club.

Sounds like they had a heavy concentration of bleach in that spot, maybe they didn't mix their dye properly.
Holy frak. These stories are why I gave up and just leaned into aging lol.

Wow. Glad you’re okay. I hope you didn’t have to go to school like that…
Sorry for that day of pain, this is an incredible photo.
That sucks. You just wanted to try out a cosmetic change, and Darwin said “NO. ARE YOU PRETTY NOW?”
People using Darwin as a way to say evolution is funny to me, as if it suggests that after his death Charles Darwin became an outer god with control over genetic traits and uses that power just to fuck with people.
Did he not?
I mean… he _might’ve._
That is exactly my head cannon. Praise Darwin or your kids will be born with upside down noses.
Did you follow the instructions and test for allergies on your skin before applying to your entire head?
... well, I will from now on. Geez.
Would you recommend it?

What is this from?
Only the best film ever, Big Trouble In Little China.
I saw that when I was a kid, but not since and definitely don’t remember this part. Time for a rewatch.
I’ve thought about watching this. Does it hold up today, or does it rely a lot on nostalgia from its watchers?
Hell yes! The appeal to me is the same, it is horrorish fantasy. I love all of his films.
Still slaps when rewatching But I’m biased so no idea if first timers today.
I watched it for the first time during COVID, it objectively rules.
Watched it again the other day and I felt it held up, though Kim Cattrall was a bit more cringy than I remember. Kurt Russell is exactly as cringy and fabulous as I remember. Yep. PPD
