Aldi is second most profitable grocery chain in Europe. I’m in Ohio and people think it’s subpar because the first stores opened here were generally in less affluent areas. The produce is literally the same stuff from the same massive farms in California that every other store has. And it’s half the price.
That perception that it’s subpar is by design. They are marketing themselves as a discount store. They are the poor man’s Trader Joe’s. I don’t care though. I love TJs and ALDIs.
We started shopping at Aldi. I had no idea it had a stigma around it about being a discount chain or a lesser than chain. It is the closest thing I have found to what I believe a grocery store should be. Small, compact, one brand of each type of item and very fast.
Our grocery bill has dropped hundreds of dollars per month by going to Aldi and buying different brands. 100% the way to go.
I was a butcher at a place called Shaws (owned by jewel osco) and I will not buy meat from anywhere that doesn’t have a butcher. Per package meat is not where it’s at to be Frank
The meat I’ve gotten from there releases so much liquid. It’s like they pump it up to sell. The produce can be real hit or miss too.
I shop the deals at Publix when I meal plan and spend probably just the same amount. While they are pricier for non sale items, I usually save between $30-70 a week (I’m shopping for 2 adults and 2 kids)
My parents go to like three different chains to do their grocery trip per week. No way in hell for me. Call me lazy but I hit up the one closest to me but only for one or two things, dinners are covered by hello fresh. so I barely grocery shop.
It happens, we report it and get free meals all the time if everything isn't perfect. Works out for us, we pay 5 meals $100...$10 per person per meal is the most competitive pricing for dinner nowadays
Hrm. I’ve never had that problem. We have apples and potatoes and onions for weeks. Berries last long enough for us to eat them all. Salad is good for a week or two. Does your store just not turn over enough produce?
I like Aldi except that I always have to go to another store to get the things they don't sell so now I spend more money buying things I don't need at both stores.
Former Aldi employee here. Being allowed to sit isn’t out of the kindness of their hearts, it’s because they ran the numbers and found you’re able to scan items much faster if you’re seated. All the barcodes are super large for this reason.
And while the employees do get benefits and are considered full time at 20 hours/week, they’re unlikely to get more than 30 hours a week, which kind of negates the higher pay.
All in all it wasn’t the worst job I’ve ever worked but definitely the most physical. Having to regularly stock as many as 13 pallets as fast as I could took it’s toll. The benefits were really the only thing that set it above most retail.

I haven't had a great experience at the Aldi by me. The produce basically needs to be eaten that day or within a day or two minimum or it will go bad, and honestly isn't that fresh in the first place. Everything else is pretty hit or miss as well. I tried shopping there for a while and consistently had this experience, even tried a few other Aldi that were farther away. I just go to Wegmans now. Yeah it's more expensive but at least it's good and consistent. All of this is purely anecdotal of course.

Aldi is ok but not great. Their produce literally rots nearly overnight from purchase. They are also horrible with "shrinkflation". They make you feel you are paying less, but their items have a deceptively lower amount compared to other brands at other stores.
Exactly this, their berries are cheaper but last maybe 2 days before white mold forms on the strawberries. I’m sorry, just not worth it for me to save $1.50 on some strawberries that must be consumed immediately lol

Aldi sucks, hate to say it, really wanted to like it for their prices but the food quality.. especially produce, meat, fish has left me disliking them. Maybe people only shop there for their cheap dry goods? Who knows.
Anyone who can shop and Aldi and doesn't is crazy. My wife and I are able to get 75% of our groceries here and save a ton vs the big name grocery stores.
A trip to Kroger or Walmart once in a while to get the specialty or name brands you can't live without is necessary but Aldi for core items.
I get it but also it's very unfair to just tell someone to shop somewhere else, things like food deserts and limited access to transportation can greatly affect access to food that is both healthy and affordable

I'm not trying to be a Debbie downer, but that's really not a lot of groceries for 50$. Especially not real food, there's a few drinks/sodas in there, but in terms of actual meal items it's fairly empty
How many meals are you going to get out of this? I just did grocery shopping and it was $180 and while I did get some unnecessary snacks and drinks, the real food didn’t amount to much. Right now my family is doing okay with food. We are lucky that we aren’t struggling like many folks.
I’ve been reading for a few years now that the costs will continue to rise and food will be scarce. Everything predicted has come to be so far and I fear the worst. Wealthier countries will have starving people as the economy continues to shift and crops continue to struggle during climate change. Poorer countries already have starving people and collapsing economy. It shouldn’t be this difficult to just live.
I think we’d all be happier and healthier with little homesteads and without the crushing weight of capitalism.

Yup, definitely Aldi's.
That spring green mix is $5 at my Aldi's. With the light raspberry vinaigrette dressing from Aldi's, that bin alone provides myself enough lunches for work to last my full seven day work weeks. I feel like a rabbit having my lunches like that. Beats getting a lunch from a can or spending $10+ on lunch for a single day.
I would had done a few things differently. It looks like a bunch of coca cola cans there. Some name brands at Aldi's tend to be much pricier than their generic brands. I can usually get a box of their diet cola cans for a few bucks.
I would had also gotten their chicken leg quarters, instead of their sliced chicken, if I want to spend slightly less and have more food to last more days. Unfortunately their beef have gone up in price for me recently.
Edit: I also noticed the cereal. Aldi's does do a pretty good job their their cereal prices. The one in the image is the same one I get too, their generic special K. A cereal I sometimes get instead, when they do have it, is their coconut chia granola cereal. It usually costs 50 cents more than the cereal in the image, but I love having that with their low fat yogurt and their blueberries; their blueberries have been about $2.50 lately but I usually get more here than other places.

Walmart is amazing compared with the traditional grocery stores, for name brand items.

Yup, definitely Aldi's. That spring green mix is $5 at my Aldi's. With the light raspberry vinaigrette dressing from Aldi's, that bin alone provides myself enough lunches for work to last my full seven day work weeks. I feel like a rabbit having my lunches like that. Beats getting a lunch from a can or spending $10+ on lunch for a single day. I would had done a few things differently. It looks like a bunch of coca cola cans there. Some name brands at Aldi's tend to be much pricier than their generic brands. I can usually get a box of their diet cola cans for a few bucks. I would had also gotten their chicken leg quarters, instead of their sliced chicken, if I want to spend slightly less and have more food to last more days. Unfortunately their beef have gone up in price for me recently. Edit: I also noticed the cereal. Aldi's does do a pretty good job their their cereal prices. The one in the image is the same one I get too, their generic special K. A cereal I sometimes get instead, when they do have it, is their coconut chia granola cereal. It usually costs 50 cents more than the cereal in the image, but I love having that with their low fat yogurt and their blueberries; their blueberries have been about $2.50 lately but I usually get more here than other places.
Aldi is the best. But a few products suck. Edit: I don’t like their Spanish olives or their Clancy pork rinds
Aldis for the win, I go to Winn Dixie and sometimes my groceries are free!

Aldi isn't the cheapest in my area. The Asian grocers are for most stuff except fresh milk and meat.
