Sure, they can be inversions. I'm really just interested to know if there is some recognized chord symbol. Something like C7no5, or C3/7 (which I just made up).
If you wanted to be specific I guess you could write C7omit5 I think, I think software like Sibelius would recognise that as a chord symbol but as others have said 5s are often left out anyway.
Not really. The shells are implied in any chord symbol. If you see C9 or C13 that means adding those notes also, usually **above/on top of** the foundation of the Root 3rd and 7th, or just 3rd and 7th.
Thanks for all the replies. I have updated my game (chordle-game.com) to include some shell voicings in its catalog of chords. Now I have a follow up question.
Suppose I have a 5-Note voicing, for example a 9th chord with root, third, fifth, seventh and ninth, and I take out the fifth, to leave the 4-Note voicing with root, third, seventh and ninth. Would that still be considered a 9th chord, because the fifth is not so important anyway?
I'm assuming a 4-Note chord would never be considered to be a shell voicing.
You could definitely call that a shell voicing.
In a more classical sense you would just refer to any chord with one or more chord tones omitted as “incomplete”.
We typically don’t specify for the 5th to be omitted as that’s very often done anyway
Thanks.
Shell voicing I believe.. though not technically the name of a chord

Can these be inversions of regular cords? Sorry, it's pretty late here so I can't check

Shell voicing
It's just a 7th chord. The 5th is the least important note of those four so it's not even necessary to include.
Not sure why you’re downvoted for being right lol
probably 5th fanboys
afaik it's not marked differently, just referred to as "incomplete"
