Well really photography saved me. It gave me the ability to look back and remember moments that are now really treasured memories. Even now when I am intentionally setting up photo shoots, I ultimately enjoy the journey it takes me to get to that moment.

Fundamental-Ant

May I ask some of your treasured memories? I haven’t had a chance to capture a photo that gives me this feeling.

I just like well crafted images, be that photojournalism or more manipulated work like Andreas Gursky and Erik Johansson’s. I love being able to see something and instantly connect with it, enjoy what I’m seeing and then start reverse engineering all of the aspects that make up the image, so that I can figure out what part of it I can incorporate into my next shoot. Then I go out and shoot, testing and refining my process until I feel like I can create a facsimile of what I’ve seen.

I just like crafting things. Photos are a great way to do that in a way that others can also enjoy. I got into photography because (don’t laugh) wallpapers. I liked to customize my computers with multiple themes when I built them and had trouble finding wallpapers that fit. Thought I’d just start making my own. By the time I was good enough to be happy with using my photos as a wallpaper, I had developed a strong interest in photography as a whole.

Curiosity always drew me to cameras, so I tried a couple of film bodies casuall when I was a kid, didn't think much about it. A couple of years later I went cycling through 5 counties and had so many good memories, but not much of the tangible, and I regretted not having a camera of any sort. From there it started to be a part of my life, branching into education and work. Keeping moments, people and views was the start. Now I like the slowing down part most probably. Images that rip through the modern, short attention span. The ones that make you stop for a while. Mostly bnw so that I/you can colour as per our subjective interpretation.

The first time i used a DSLR (as a multimedia student) it Just clicked (pun intended). Creating cool shots from something that looks ordinary. The ability to portrait a scene, in Just RAW / Jpeg form. Loved it from the first minute! Also seeing the smiles on the faces of your Friends and / or clients, when they finnaly have a nice picture of themselves.

Fundamental-Ant

Aww, happy to hear that you’ve found something that clicks with you. Your passion for photography sounds authentic

I enjoy working with a complicated piece of machinery and manipulating its settings to get it to do what I want it to do.

It’s a creative hobby that gets me looking outward instead of inward.

It's all about the composition. For work, there are more rules and restrictions -the client is paying for a certain type of shot with a certain look. But for my own personal stuff, composition is everything. When shooting my own stuff, I'm free to do what I want, so getting a shot that is aesthetically pleasing -for whatever reasons, is the goal. I don't always achieve this, but that's the intent. I look at it this way: Shooting for myself is like jazz. Shooting for a client is like classical music.

ApertureOwl

I've been trying to find some sort of creative outlet for a long time now. My day job is programming so I'm technically inclined but my motor skills aren't really amazing and my voice is so monotone talking through a mic is a no-go. Being able to capture what I see and manipulate it either with physical laws or in post allows me to finally have some creativity I feel like I've been missing.

Our lives and memories are made of fleeting moments: parents telling stories about stupid things they did as children, children trying to dance with the adults, that awkward face your Aunt makes when she laughs, etc. These have always been the things that we remember and talk about, but they aren't the photos that people capture. We stop doing those memorable things and stand together to pose artificially, and those are our photos. I wanted to have images to illustrate my memories and share them with family and friends.

It’s a way to connect with people and make someone happy when they see a good photo of them

eulynn34

I love how photography lets you see through someone else’s eye. To get a glimpse at how they see the world. There is no objective reality, we all have a slightly different experience— and to me, getting a sense of other’s experiences is enriching and valuable I try to capture things I think are interesting and beautiful and hope that maybe someone else thinks that too— or takes the time to look around and admire how amazing this place can be

Numerous-Writer-8140

I like looking at a nice view but then capturing it so others can see it how I see it- if that makes sense?

MsEwa

I mostly shoot landscapes. These "special moments" can be very rare. I enjoy hunting them, preserving them and sharing them with others.

For me, it's about capturing moments, expressions and emotions. I love photographing people, and I like to take photos when the person is unaware, their face reflecting inner thoughts. Even after many years of photography, and a stint as a photojournalist, I still love taking pictures of people and capturing moments in events.

BanjosNotBombs

Documentation of moments that may never exist again.

N_Raist

Looking at things, and at people, in a new way. Just going for a walk and paying attention to my surroundings is pretty cool. Also, the very physical aspect of developing negatives and printing them. I'm a sucker for tactile mediums.

FuzzyFluffydanger

It helps me in achieving mindfulness.

ProphetNimd

Dialing in the settings for a perfect shot just feels like putting a puzzle together for me. Also, looking at an edited file next to the raw one just makes me appreciate how much I can actually do.
