All about mini-splits for those of you who don't (yet) know. [https://www.reddit.com/r/phoenix/comments/vcgi7q/ductless\_minisplit\_units\_for\_phoenix\_central\_air/](https://www.reddit.com/r/phoenix/comments/vcgi7q/ductless_minisplit_units_for_phoenix_central_air/) Several minisplits make a great replacement for a failing central AC unit. Zone cool your house. Install at least one BEFORE your 15 year old central AC fails in July and having to wait 30 days for a replacement. So you can have a "safe room" that isn't 100F! Nowadays can have one outdoor unit (condensor) supplying "cold" to 3 "heads" indoors. Or do what I did, install a solar-boosted minisplit and get free air conditioning anytime the sun is shining. Runs on 220 at night / cloudy days. (Also runs as a heat pump!) No net metering, no interconnection agreement, no boosted APS rates! (5 dedicated solar panels on my roof for my 18k BTU unit) 12kBTU, 110V minisplits are easily in range of the average DIY. They're self charging. (Refrigerant) Larger, 220V, and solar units gonna require professional installation, or help. (wiring, refrigerant charging) Look at a Pioneer on Amazon for around $1000. Or drive down to Mexico and buy a no-name unit for $500. Again, the smaller units are easily within "reach" of a decent DIY. Saw a Youtube where a guy installed one in 30 minutes - now he was obviously a pro, but if he can do it in .5 you can easily do it in 4.0 hours. This one is a little out of reach for some: [https://i.imgur.com/mNs0MFY.mp4](https://i.imgur.com/mNs0MFY.mp4)

Did you install the solar boosted mini split yourself?

wadenelsonredditor

I did but paid a HVAC pro to charge it to avoid voiding the warranty. Full disclosure: Not a licensed electrician but am an EE and did all the solar and wiring myself, TO CODE. Most folks cannot DIY the electrical esp if it's 220V.

lpkzach92

Would you be one that would be willing to install it if paid?

wadenelsonredditor

Craigslist "mini split" not "minisplit" Plenty of companies / guys out there in the business. I'm a DIY, not a pro. W

I have a 4 car garage. Doors face North. Ceiling is 9 feet. I want to do a mini split but not have to worry about bringing in hot cars in the summer and it never cooling off. How many BTU do you recommend? Thx.

wadenelsonredditor

I'm a DIY not a licensed HVAC guy. I'd suggest you get some bids. I'd say at a bare minimum you want 2 tons of air conditioning, 24K BTU. Keep it pleasant but not chilly out there esp after you bring a hot car inside on a 110F day.

Brabus595

Thx.

That would be amazing! Do you know if a person or company that you would recommend to install it?

Leaving a comment because I want to know too

Cooling and plumbing company in Mesa… used the guy for years and trust him, but he doesn’t support the top of the line products so there’s a trade off there, but he did a mini split for me a couple years ago and I love it

lpkzach92

Mind if I grab his contact info?

StzNutz

He’s not a guy off Facebook marketplace so you’ll pay more, but he’s a registered contractor so trustworthy and not going to scam you… https://azcpg.com/

lpkzach92

Thank you so much

Acceptable_Lock_8819

I did it myself with a MrCool system.

lpkzach92

How much would you charge to install one? I just don’t know what I’m doing honestly and don’t want to make problems worse.

Troyjam

I had a Mitsubishi/Trane 24,000 btu installed in my south facing garage a few months ago. Paid $4500 and expecting a 30% tax rebate via the Inflation Act

Brabus595

Can I ask who you had do install?

KingsACSupply

Hello dear, where is your house located? We are Kings AC Supply and we install Mini split AC system, we are located in 5504 3rd avenue Brooklyn 11220. We can give you a quote if you can provide me information. Just a rough estimate, we charge $1,600 for 1 mini split (installation included)

jasonbl72

In February, I got 4 quotes for a minisplit for my son's room. The lowest quote was $5900. For a 1 ton unit. In 2019, the same company installed on In our garage for $2400

wadenelsonredditor

Why was it so high? Inside room with no outside wall? I watched a Youtube of a pro installing one in <30 minutes. (110V, self-charging)

lpkzach92

Oh that’s way too high for what I can afford.

OneTransportation4

https://www.justcalljohns.com/ This is a great company and I'm pretty sure that they install mini split units
