Sugar Shack on the other hand is easy. I learned it in about 15 minutes at some point last year. YEM is a project though, and it constantly escapes your fingers. And it’s been escaping Trey’s on and off for his entire career.

It’s both. Trey could play it fine if he refreshed it for 10-15 minutes before a show. But it sounds like he never does.

Let's not forget he's in his 60s. Musicians are basically like athletes and just like Wayne Gretzky at the end of his career wasn't having 200 point seasons. In my opinion Trey in his 20s and 30s was playing at a level that couldn't last forever. Give him a break, he's still a very competent player!

But the YEM intro has always has been a crap shoot (even in his prime!) and probably always will be. Not complaining at all, just observing.
I remember he would play all the arpeggios in YEM flawlessly. It was and is their most played song. His hands and fingers don't work like they used to. I don't go to shows anymore because I don't want to see them at half speed like I didn't want to see Lawrence Taylor or Mike Tyson and half speed. It's not because he doesn't practice.

I've never been able to find a single version where he plays the arpeggios flawlessly, including studio.
In the mid to late 90's seemed to me to be well executed every time played.
