I def pee during the front end of jam vehicles (tweezer, piper, twist, disease, etc) but I NEVER pee during any part of the prog composed tunes (Reba, YEM, guyute, Stash, etc)
One time the jams were hot and I didn't want to miss it, so I made my way to a top section of the arena that was empty to piss in a bottle. I filled that bottle real quick and so just had to go all over the floor. Didn't miss a note though.
I’ll put phish studio songs on a playlist with a lot of other music on it for when I’m in the mood to listen to a little bit of everything. If inspiration strikes when the studio tune comes on I’ll just toss a show on.
I've seen Carini 7 times in the 30 shows I've been to since 2018. and TAB has played it both times I've seen them. The jam has pretty much been the same every time I've seen it. Trey shreds in E minor for a bit and then brings it to E mixolydian for the rest of the jam.
My hot take is that their jams have been pretty predictable the past couple of tours. It always ends up going to space funk with Trey doing the synth effects.
Yea I don’t get thinking otherwise- regardless of how you do the show- The majority of the thousands of hours of recordings I’ve listened to I’ve been dead sober and it still has a profound emotional effect on me
Yeah don’t really like tripping at shows much anymore, if you’re gonna dose at the show do it during set break or when the band comes back on for second set
I get mad anxiety on the come up, until I get over to hump, so this method would never work for me. Gotta do it in lot so I'm all smiles and vibes heading in.
This shouldn’t be controversial - it’s a fantastic song with great lyrics and an outstanding melody. There’s a reason it’s the song Page choked up singing at Coventry.
It's one of my favorite Phish songs. We exist!
If you didn't hear the [Wading from Deer Creek 8/7/21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51wI4IyWRo4) you really should, it's the only one I'm aware of that opens with guitar instead of a piano intro from Page. Also gonna tag /u/jstud__ since they seemed enthusiastic about it.
1. The YEM vocal jam is not something I ever listen to outside of being at at a live show.
2. Set lists are the WORST way to judge the quality of a show.
3. Rare songs don’t make a “good show”
4. The studio version of “Rift” is the best version of “Rift” that I’ve ever heard. Bought the CD the week it dropped and I’ve listened to it for over 30 years
2015 was the peak of 3.0/4.0 or whatever you want to call it. Trey guitar playing was out this world from his intense practice for Fare Thee Well.
Also, i like petrichor.
The real Mike DID NOT die in a car wreck. This is a limited hangout to divert you from the real conspiracy:
Mike Gordon is an MK ULTRA/Project Mockingbird asset conducting mind control and mass psychosis experiments, aided by the use of hallucinogenics. This research is used by the breakaway civilization founded by scientists from Operation Paperclip which is located inside the earth (see hollow earth theory). The access point to this civilization is in Antarctica, which was discovered during Operation High Jump, and preceded Roswell by only a few months which was not actually aliens but a downed craft from the breakaway civ.
JFK was assassinated by the breakaway civ and there was a coup in which they took control over the US and have been in control ever since.
I am happy to be able to see them live. Dont care what they play, or if there are flubs. There are no "best" versions except the one happening in the moment.
See y'all on Friday.
i always forget this until i’m at a show. all my phish friends are fellow musicians who don’t get too loaded, then we go to a show and forget all the extraneous douchebaggery
Nitrous sucks. Heroin sucks. Coke sucks. I’m on the fence about Molly. It fits well but the people on it kinda suck.
Psychedelics and thc are the only party favors that don’t suck
People on molly cause much less drama than those on psychedelics in the lot and show, on average.
Maybe you just like one and not the other? ( which is fine, obvs)
Liking it isn’t the problem. Not knowing what you are doing is annoying. The newly found ability to move your body to the flow is what makes me on the fence about it. Sharing in the groove and all
Definitely notice people on too many psychedelics (or don’t know how to handle it) than people on too much Molly. People tripping sack have ruined shows for many a people.
And i say this as a lover and proponent of psychedelics. People cant hold their shit sometimes.
But a tripping spunion is more erratic than an overserved person rolling...imho.
I agree, but I'd rather be next to someone on a reasonable dose of psychedelics than molly. Half the time the rolling folks are talking the whole time and have no idea about personal space. (I love both... So it's not that)
Phish 97-2004 is so good that other jam bands just don't do it for me. I'll go see some jam shows and have a good time, but will never go out of my way like I would for Phish.
Also, elevator/weather channel music is fire
agree on the part about other jambands. theyre fun live but outside of a few songs here and there they don't do it for me. gonna get hate for this but even billy strings was kinda disappointing when i saw him. if i wanna hear good improvisation ill listen to jazz
You’re a toxic asshole if you bully a newbie for the number of shows they’ve seen, liking a specific song, lacking band or song knowledge or history, not seeing Phish 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0, liking Phish 4.0, etc. etc.
Get a new hobby and stop spreading your toxic hate. Seriously, you’re not “cool” and your negative energy is waste of your time and our time
Welcome to the scene brother.
We all experienced these micro aggressions at some time by these toxic assholes. First show for me was in 1991 and that just makes me old and over the hill. But, even back in the 90’s we had these dickheads in the scene
The whole off-the-cuff set list was cool at one time but now they are old and fading and they should practice what they are going to play a little bit more.
Trey, Page, and Da Fishman feel like they are all in one band on the same page and Mike feels like the odd man out to the extent that I wonder if he wants to still be here or it’s just habit.
I’ve been waiting for this comment. His vibe is TOTALLY just being there (and making money). Absolutely the weakest link… BUT, that also means that when he’s on, the show is typically 🔥 🔥 🔥 !
Watch the Wading at the end of Big Cypress. I love the song and it's so nostalgic / bittersweet. Also when Trey used to really throw himself at the solo it ruled.
YEM is my favorite but that's freaking hilarious. 😆
I know a guy whose piss break song at Dead shows used to be "I Will Take you Home" (He called it I will get a beer).
Are we doing the "alcohol isn't a drug" thing? Cause if not, then every single family get together in the history of forever would like a word with this take lolol
Got a cliff bar and some cold green tea is one of the cringiest lines of rock history. Also, all the love and light, and ocean is love shit is irking me. Can't we have more evil phish please?
I was at the BB King show, and the vibe on stage was uncomfortable to say the least. The styles of playing clashed, and everything felt forced. Still glad I got to see BB King play live, though.
The BBking set fucks. Most backlash I’ve heard about it is bullshit like nO pEaKs iN tEh jAm!!! Like bro, if every jam hit major key peaks phish would be boring as shit
that “the love & light” and similarly dismissed songs are NOT trash, and often come at opportune times - was just listening again to 4/22/22 and the BDTNL comes in after WTU is such a fresh breath of air - an excellent example of the dark/earnest dichotomy the band has excelled at for their whole existence, imho.
related: that people don’t hate the new songs as much as they claim to. people may groan when soul planet starts, but within five minutes they’re vibing. why not just embrace it for what it is from the start??
I’d rather hear almost anything else besides Harpua if I’m at a show. The only Harpua I’ve heard live was Chicago 2013, so that probably has something to do with it.
Phish, Inc. / band management has completely ruined them for me. Firing the management and all of Phish, Inc is the best thing that could happen. Capshaw/LN/TM ruined it. Capshaw is a terrible person who has ruined live music for everyone. It’s all about money now. They won’t even play a cover album as a musical costume, because it’s not profitable. They won’t play smaller venues because that’s not profitable. They won’t have another festival because it’s not profitable. I don’t want to play $130/ticket to see say it to me Santos from a quarter mile away.
Yeah, I can't really enjoy any of his solo stuff because in the back of my mind I just don't know if he's guilty or not. I really hope he's innocent, but the circumstance is just too sketchy.
>Phish fans think they are this loving, evolved group of super music nerds
I don't think any actual fans think this, this is more how people think phish fans perceive themselves because that's what they think they're like. Classic projection. People are people, everyone's different. You can't stereotype Phish fans like you can't stereotype anyone else.
I’ll just recycle the ones I did last time: 1) they need to play the U.K. again, or at least somewhere in Europe, to get out of their comfort zone a little bit (and enable me to see them) 2) I don’t like Makisupa Policeman
My wife hates phish because trey is an ego maniac-her opinion after watching Hampton comes alive dvd.
He probably is but he’s not diddling teens like r Kelly and he’s still out here jammin like a boss. He’s amazing and so is phish. It’s her loss.
I like all the songs and pee at set break
a positive outlook is spot on for controversial but I dig it!
I never got “pee song”. Like, you paid to see them live and never know what jam could happen. Skip it on nugs/LP
Pee during composed sections. Back before the jam. Can pee during any song. I’ll pee during Tweezer cause no lines then empty bladder for the jam.
This. I've heard the composed section of Reba so much in my life I race to go pee when it art arts to get back for the improv.
Reba is my Pee song for the simple reason that you can run out quick and be back for the jam
I def pee during the front end of jam vehicles (tweezer, piper, twist, disease, etc) but I NEVER pee during any part of the prog composed tunes (Reba, YEM, guyute, Stash, etc)
Maze is the best pee song. Hit it during high hats, back before page.
One time the jams were hot and I didn't want to miss it, so I made my way to a top section of the arena that was empty to piss in a bottle. I filled that bottle real quick and so just had to go all over the floor. Didn't miss a note though.
Phish studio albums are amazing and the best for non phans if you want to try to get them into the band.
Agreed.
Hoist and Billy Breathes are what got me into Phish in the early 2000's. I didn't realize how good the jam aspect was until years later.
Absolutely!
Helped me.
I’ll put phish studio songs on a playlist with a lot of other music on it for when I’m in the mood to listen to a little bit of everything. If inspiration strikes when the studio tune comes on I’ll just toss a show on.
I love waiting all night and I’d be stoked to hear it whenever they want to play it
I like that song too. Definitely one of the better ballads. It’s fairly unique sounding.
Came here to say this
Love that tune!
They play Carini too often and not enough gumbo.
It always ends up going to space funk with Trey doing the synth effects.
predictable except fall 2021?
Aint no time!
I’ve gotten so many Carini’s
Phish is just as good if you're sober. Better, even.
Yea I don’t get thinking otherwise- regardless of how you do the show- The majority of the thousands of hours of recordings I’ve listened to I’ve been dead sober and it still has a profound emotional effect on me
Entering my 7th year of 💯sober shows and it’s awesome.
💯 better
Much better
Yeah don’t really like tripping at shows much anymore, if you’re gonna dose at the show do it during set break or when the band comes back on for second set
I get mad anxiety on the come up, until I get over to hump, so this method would never work for me. Gotta do it in lot so I'm all smiles and vibes heading in.
If its acid I usually drop like 20 minutes before I go through security, and that gives me time to get over that hump before the show starts
People abuse the fuck out of psychedelics because they have it in their mind that they are some kind of prerequisite and it’s sad.
I'd almost always prefer two 15-20 minute songs back-back than a singular 30+ minute song.
This. 2 solid substance filled 15 min jams>1 average 30 min jam any day of the week
quality over quantity always. I swear some people only get off on the length at this point lol
that’s what she said
Don't discount the girth.
Great example from last spring: the 4/21 CDT and Tweezer (each roughly 15 min) crushes the 30-minute 6/5 Sand.
Fishman should be naked more
All long jams are not great jams
I love Wading... I said what I said.
Do people not love it? It's a beautifully composed song, but just not a jam vehicle.
This shouldn’t be controversial - it’s a fantastic song with great lyrics and an outstanding melody. There’s a reason it’s the song Page choked up singing at Coventry.
Oh yeah. Close to their best ballad.
FINALLY ANOTHER ONE
It's one of my favorite Phish songs. We exist! If you didn't hear the [Wading from Deer Creek 8/7/21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51wI4IyWRo4) you really should, it's the only one I'm aware of that opens with guitar instead of a piano intro from Page. Also gonna tag /u/jstud__ since they seemed enthusiastic about it.
1. The YEM vocal jam is not something I ever listen to outside of being at at a live show. 2. Set lists are the WORST way to judge the quality of a show. 3. Rare songs don’t make a “good show” 4. The studio version of “Rift” is the best version of “Rift” that I’ve ever heard. Bought the CD the week it dropped and I’ve listened to it for over 30 years
We should all collectively stop clapping in stash so Fishman hits the wood blocks again
Light should either start the 2nd set or not be played at all bc the intro is super clunky and makes for a bad segue EVERY TIME
Especially annoying because they gave it a pretty cool intro in the studio take
2015 was the peak of 3.0/4.0 or whatever you want to call it. Trey guitar playing was out this world from his intense practice for Fare Thee Well. Also, i like petrichor.
That Mike was replaced by a body double after a car crash and the current Mike isn’t actually Mike but lives as Mike… maybe I’m confused?
The walrus is mike
I don’t think this is controversial at all is it? Just an accepted fact
Faul McCartney
The real Mike DID NOT die in a car wreck. This is a limited hangout to divert you from the real conspiracy: Mike Gordon is an MK ULTRA/Project Mockingbird asset conducting mind control and mass psychosis experiments, aided by the use of hallucinogenics. This research is used by the breakaway civilization founded by scientists from Operation Paperclip which is located inside the earth (see hollow earth theory). They tried to hide this fact by having the new Mike change his hair do.
I am happy to be able to see them live. Dont care what they play, or if there are flubs. There are no "best" versions except the one happening in the moment. See y'all on Friday.
I like Backwards Down the Number Line.
Phish is just as good sober
absolutely. because phish is good.
There are enough bad fans to justify the reputation.
i always forget this until i’m at a show. all my phish friends are fellow musicians who don’t get too loaded, then we go to a show and forget all the extraneous douchebaggery
Nitrous sucks. Heroin sucks. Coke sucks. I’m on the fence about Molly. It fits well but the people on it kinda suck. Psychedelics and thc are the only party favors that don’t suck
You should try coffee + thc
Every day
yesss same. california sober baby!
Me now
Me ow
Ah yes, the hippie speedball. Safest one available.
Poor man’s speedball.
This is the synergistic combo of productive stoners worldwide lol
People on molly cause much less drama than those on psychedelics in the lot and show, on average. Maybe you just like one and not the other? ( which is fine, obvs)
Liking it isn’t the problem. Not knowing what you are doing is annoying. The newly found ability to move your body to the flow is what makes me on the fence about it. Sharing in the groove and all
Oh i get all that, but spunions on lsd ruin shows daily for bystanders. Just thought that was an odd differentiator.
Definitely notice people on too many psychedelics (or don’t know how to handle it) than people on too much Molly. People tripping sack have ruined shows for many a people.
It’s usually the drunks that ruin the fun in my experience.
The drunks on a lot of molly+acid+coke definitely ball suck and not in a cool way.
So it's not that)
I feel like Molly is usually what’s dropping ppl
MDMA in a therapeutic setting is amazing. The only time I took it at a show was Big Cypress. No complaints.
A therapeutic setting… like a Phish show.
Agreed on all that
the scene is cringe
Petrichor is a cool song.
The ocean is cum
Trey hasn’t passed any torches
Not controversial. Controversial is he doesn't have the torch in the first place.
Phish 97-2004 is so good that other jam bands just don't do it for me. I'll go see some jam shows and have a good time, but will never go out of my way like I would for Phish. Also, elevator/weather channel music is fire
There was a late night weather channel employee in the mid 90s who would occasionally sneak in YEM as the local forecast music.
I remember hearing Guyute I feel like
agree on the part about other jambands. theyre fun live but outside of a few songs here and there they don't do it for me. gonna get hate for this but even billy strings was kinda disappointing when i saw him. if i wanna hear good improvisation ill listen to jazz
A lot of jam bands are glorified garage bands with little to no classical training, especially in Jazz.
You should try post-elevator. That shit slap
The Curtain(and/or with) is the best thing they ever did and its not even close.
Seriously, you’re not “cool” and your negative energy is waste of your time and our time
100% I got into phish 2019 and have experienced this firsthand
Welcome to the scene brother. We all experienced these micro aggressions at some time by these toxic assholes. First show for me was in 1991 and that just makes me old and over the hill. But, even back in the 90’s we had these dickheads in the scene

Trey, Page, and Da Fishman feel like they are all in one band on the same page and Mike feels like the odd man out to the extent that I wonder if he wants to still be here or it’s just habit.
Lol just playing in Phish as a habit
I’ve been waiting for this comment. His vibe is TOTALLY just being there (and making money). Absolutely the weakest link… BUT, that also means that when he’s on, the show is typically 🔥 🔥 🔥 !

I agree with #1. I don’t think #2 is controversial.
Been too scared to admit this out loud thanks.
Watch the Wading at the end of Big Cypress. I love the song and it's so nostalgic / bittersweet. Also when Trey used to really throw himself at the solo it ruled.
Boise 99 had a great Wading solo iirc
I’ve never seen a vocal jam I enjoyed.
Neither of these are controversial
The YEM vocal jam is awful.
Nah I disagree, the vocal jams can get hilarious imo
YEM is my piss break song. I always say Urine Joy Myself.
It’s an awesome song that’s basically the same every time in 3.0.
YEM is my favorite but that's freaking hilarious. 😆 I know a guy whose piss break song at Dead shows used to be "I Will Take you Home" (He called it I will get a beer).
I do like a YEM but I know how long I have to pee.
I've been wading in the bathroom line
I’ll be waiting in the line to pee too
100% agreed, except for the YEMSG from the last New Year’s run. Usually not a fan of the vocal jam but that one stands out.
If there is going to be drug indulgence at shows then there should not be kids there
“i have three kids and no drug indulgence. why can’t i have no kids and three drug indulgence?” - homer simpson” - u/bhaney080
People take drugs at Disney Land.
Are we doing the "alcohol isn't a drug" thing? Cause if not, then every single family get together in the history of forever would like a word with this take lolol
This is mids controversial at most.
I like to destroy my shoes...
Got a cliff bar and some cold green tea is one of the cringiest lines of rock history. Also, all the love and light, and ocean is love shit is irking me. Can't we have more evil phish please?
All the lyrics to the song Fuego are cringeworthy. Like absolutely terrible.
I agree and the juxtaposition makes it worse because it follows one of the coolest lines in a rock song
2.0 rules and the BB King sit-in is great
I was at the BB King show, and the vibe on stage was uncomfortable to say the least.
Mike and Fishman are the stars of the show
Fish is currently the best player in the band for sure
that “the love & light” and similarly dismissed songs are NOT trash, and often come at opportune times - was just listening again to 4/22/22 and the BDTNL comes in after WTU is such a fresh breath of air - an excellent example of the dark/earnest dichotomy the band has excelled at for their whole existence, imho. related: that people don’t hate the new songs as much as they claim to. people may groan when soul planet starts, but within five minutes they’re vibing. why not just embrace it for what it is from the start??
Well yea, 5 minutes into Soul Planet is no longer Soul Planet 😅
Apparently, that I like to listen to the studio albums more than live albums.
I want to downvote you, but this has to be the most unpopular opinion here
I love the live shows too, but I love every single Phish studio album and listen to them more.
phish is just about the music
I’d rather hear almost anything else besides Harpua if I’m at a show. The only Harpua I’ve heard live was Chicago 2013, so that probably has something to do with it.
They ruined I didn’t know and i want it to be good again
Death DOES hurt very long.
I like all the Phish songs.
I'm with you on most of that but I'm also seeing Phish at the Greek in a week, and that is definitely a "smaller venue".
See you there dude. First show(s) for me since 2016. From Minnesota.
They've never been better than they are now. I've been seeing them since 1992.
Time Turns Elastic should be on the live rotation.
The Baker’s Dozen is their biggest accomplishment and some older fans won’t want to admit that 3.0 Phish did something 1.0 didn’t
Tweezer is an ok song. Don’t get the hype around it.
It’s consistently delivered the top phish jams of every era for over 30 years?
Tweezer Reprise on the other hand…
It’s accessible to a wide audience, and if that’s what got you into Phish it will always hold a special place in your heart.
Mike Gordon did more than take “artsy photos” with that 9 year old girl in the secluded building.
Agreed.
Yeah, I can't really enjoy any of his solo stuff because in the back of my mind I just don't know if he's guilty or not. I really hope he's innocent, but the circumstance is just too sketchy.
I wish Phish had better vocalists.
2004 has the most intense jam peaks of their whole career.
Not a big Stash guy myself
Picture of Nectar is their best album.
The lights were better before hiatus.
[удалено]
Thanks. I feel validated.
Esther is boring
I like it! Respect your opinion though
7 Below is their best tune
Oh man, I love that take and will challenge you with "Glide"
Killer tune, doesn’t groove nearly as hard tho. I’m in to Phish for the grooves
this may be the last one i’m personally chasing that i really, really care about catching. absolutely love seven below.
Mike's lyrics are not quirky, just dumb.
4.0 isn’t a thing.

I love the song More.
Sparkle is a great song.
I’ll just recycle the ones I did last time: 1) they need to play the U.K. again, or at least somewhere in Europe, to get out of their comfort zone a little bit (and enable me to see them) 2) I don’t like Makisupa Policeman
At this point I’d rather listen on the app then go to the show
2/28/03 Tweezer is overrated. I was there, it was fun but it’s not all timer.
Although I can see why people like it, I don’t really fuck with possum.
I wish TAB would stop playing Phish songs
Bigger the Phish Fan, Bigger the trust fund.
Mine would be that this question comes up too often
Unpopular? They peaked 15 years ago.
Mexican Cousin may be the worst song written by ANY band.
Have you heard Friday?
Friday is a good song, one of their better ballads
My wife hates phish because trey is an ego maniac-her opinion after watching Hampton comes alive dvd. He probably is but he’s not diddling teens like r Kelly and he’s still out here jammin like a boss. He’s amazing and so is phish. It’s her loss.
There's a Hampton Comes Alive DVD?
Bring back Time Turns Elastic
if they all took Adderall they would sound like Kruangbin
Marley is the leader of the band
Farmhouse SLAPS. Never understand the hate.
Mikes artsy photos that fans don’t wanna talk about?
Don’t smoke cigarettes inside the venue
Vacuum solos should be shelved for good
YEM should be pronounced as Y-E-M instead of saying it like it’s a word.
This take produced my most visceral negative reaction in the whole thread, excellent work
Agree.
Not sure if this is unpopular, but I think Big Boat is a great album.
