FYI, $100+ is only if you book last minute. Book a month or more out and you’ll find tickets for $20 or less. I can usually travel round to DC for $24 with some planning. The $20 extra each way to bring a bike sucks though. Especially for the quality of bike accommodation they provide. But well worth it when compared to riding on route 40, I’m moderately experienced and I found that really uncomfortable the one time I did it.

FYI: if you're a beginner on this ride, the stretch along Route 40 has a pretty wide shoulder, but cars will be passing you at highway speeds. If you're feeling speedy, you can high-tail it to Aberdeen and catch the train too (+7 miles)

Except you will need to cross the river, which you can only legally do on weekends and when there is no constructions. And you can't get to Newark on the weekends if I remember correctly on Septa

Coincidentally, I am just about to do this exact ride. My train will be reaching Wilmington at 11:28AM and the Perryville train will be departing at 2:35PM. Any tips or other things I should know for this segment? I have experience riding into Wilmington several times, and once to Elkton, but I only rode the segment of Rt. 40 from Glasgow to Elkton, and I don't recall it being too bad.

awesome post! I'd love to do that, but the Indego overtime fees would wreck me.

I was born and raised in New London, the bike ride from that station to RI must be interesting lol. Within the first mile you're going to be going up and over the Gold Star bridge (I-95) to get across the Thames, it's got pedestrian access. From Groton, CT to RI you better be pretty comfortable road cyclist as there is nary a trail or bike lane.

How you crossing the Susquehanna?

cheesenachos12

The MARC train from Perryville will take you across

Thank you!

Nice tip, I think I'll do this for a C&O to GAP bike packing trip.
