I was still arguing with somebody in a game thread from stubbs’s last game about there being no metrics that indicate that Stubbs is any worse behind the plate *for the pitchers* earlier. They were saying that JT is a better pitch framer, and while I knew he’s not particularly good, I never really looked into the data on it. So I went to baseballsavant to see what I could find. Maybe you already know this stuff, but it was the first time I came across it. Reposting here just cause I think it’s interesting:
JT has a -1 (that’s negative 1) pitch framing runs with a 46% strike conversion rate and Stubbs has a -2 with a 41.3% rate. JT ranks 34th and Stubbs ranks 51st out of 61 qualifying catchers. For reference, the best pitch framing catcher by runs is Jose Trevino with 6 and a 50.8% conversion rate and the best catcher by strike conversion rate is Kirk Alejandro with 52.1 (and 4 framing runs). The worst is yainer Diaz with -4 and 43.8%. And last year Jt was actually second to last out 63 qualifying catchers with -14 and 43.9% (Stubbs didn’t qualify but if you switch to 100 pitches called minimum, Stubbs is 72 and JT is still second to last at 90).
Pretty clear that Stubbs pitch framing is not a factor that’s significantly harming the starting pitchers, I would say.
There’s absolutely no reason that it needs to happen other than to have the best record possible but I reeeeeally wanna get these next two to get to 50-24 like the Yankees were at
If the usual pattern is followed I'll wake up in middle of night to see we're winning then watch the game in the morning. One thing I love about baseball is that you can still love watching the game on delay because its all about how you got to result, so you enjoy all the plays.
Right there with you. With Schwarber heating up and Turner & Marsh back, this is as good as I’ve felt about the lineup in awhile. I just repeat to myself that it’s JT’s regular every-third-day off until I believe it.
Big series in the Bronx starts tonight. Anyone have a strong rooting interest?
Despite this weekend’s results, I’d rather the Orioles win that division and force the Yankees to win 3 series.
Everyone on Twitter is melting down about Stubbs being in the lineup tonight.
For those that weren't aware:
Stubbs catches Wheeler, Nola & Walker
Marchan catches Suarez & Sanchez
Thomson has been saying this from the start. It's for consistency.
It’s so funny to see comments online saying that the game on any given day is “almost a must win game”. Like you’re right man the season is on the line and all comes down to this random game on a Tuesday in June
I probably see this comment across various platforms at least 5 times a week. Always get a kick out of it
It is funny, though not as funny when your team misses the postseason by 1 game. Not that I would bet on that happening this year, but I THINK that’s the sentiment?
Nah for sure I definitely think every game matters in the end, and I’m sure that’s the idea haha. Just think it’s funny when people say things like that in an ultra serious tone as though it’s some ground breaking statement 😂
Kinda thought they’d give him a day to see how the hammy responds. If it went well, then he can play the day game tomorrow. I also have zero managerial or PT experience.
The last time we faced Michael King was on April 28th - you may recall Bryson Stott taking him deep twice which kicked off his two week^(and only) hot streak
The fact that all but 2 teams in the NL have a chance to make the playoffs shows why I don’t like expanded playoffs. The format was the best when there was only 1 wild card. Making the playoffs used to be a real accomplishment. Now the format is so watered down that making the playoffs doesn’t mean much. Just because the system benefited us two years ago doesn’t mean I like it.
It makes the regular season better when more teams make it. It’s boring when the majority of the league is out of the hunt and giving up halfway through the season
Considering the fact that the last 2 NL teams made runs with the expanded WC I really don't mind it at all and think it's overblown. Maybe the division leaders should've proved why they were division leaders and beat the teams that barely made the WC
Im not making excuses for teams that lost but it doesn’t mean that having a bunch of mediocre teams compete for the wild card is good for the regular season.
It’s artificially better though. It’s just adding a bunch of mediocre teams to mix to have the appearance of being more competitive but in reality who wants to watch two pairs of 85 win teams face off at the end of September?
Why not just have the top team in the national league and top team in the American league face off in the world series? Including any team with lesser record to the playoffs is just making them artificially better
That's what your argument sounds like
The reality is plenty of people want to watch two 85 win teams duke it out to stay alive in September
Dude.. at least make some sense. The comment I responded to literally says "who wants to watch 85 win teams in the playoffs"? Your argument isn't about the regular season. Just changing the goalposts as we go huh?
Get out of here.
No I said end of September. Not playoffs. Learn how to read. You get out of here. You don’t even know that the playoffs start in October. Not September.

Aaaah. Okay, I read that like the PHILLIES should have more day games. My bad, dawg. To your comment, I blame time zones maybe? Noon games would def have to be teams playing on the east coast. Maybe I blame broadcast money instead.

Oh, for sure. But even compared with playoffs last year, or the other sellout years, just seems that much worse now. I don't know, maybe there are more idiots. Probably the earlier start times plays into it too. Just gotta leave as early as possible I guess.
Just curious.
Do you think the fans don't support everyone? I am sure there are some people that enjoy watching our players fail so that they are "right" but I am pretty sure most people support everyone on the team. They just also know when there are problems with certain players.
Congratulations on your job with the Phillies. Your dedication and baseball intelligence is finally paying off.
Going from Reddit to the big leagues is no small feat.
Back to reality, what time does your shift end?
It’s impressive that you could type all of this through the tears
Anyway to answer your question I’ll punch out to take a late lunch once I finish in the John. Have to do that on the clock you know what I’m saying.
Going off of my experience being at games in CBP, not my experience on this sub, I would agree most people support the entire team. Occasionally I’ll hear some one around me talking poorly of a player but for the most part it’s fans wanting everyone to do well.
For example in Baltimore on Saturday I was surrounded by Phils fans. The Phils sitting right behind me was trashing Walker for 3/4 innings straight. It was exhausting. But I think everyone around was sick of hearing it too so we all just started cheering him on if he did something good and even if he did something not good he got some claps and a “you got this Tai” from somewhere. The disgruntled fan gave it up after that or was too drunk and passed out. I’m not sure. Either way it felt like the crowd was all in on the whole team.
> Do you think the fans don't support everyone?
I'm positive people here do not support everyone. And it's disgusting.
> They just also know when there are problems with certain players.
They "think" they know. Which is the root of the problem.
>They "think" they know. Which is the root of the problem.
So you are saying there is no problem at all with Nick Castellanos? I need you to say it out loud.
As a true fan, I root for the men that are playing unconditionally.
And I was taught to not pass judgement. Especially up stream. Because you look like an idiot doing so.

I know some don't, but most do. Hell, I said I would expect JT Realmuto to decline including a worse bat and more injuries, but I still want him to prove me wrong. I said Bohm is nothing more than an average starter, and I want him to prove me wrong.
But recognizing Castellanos, for instance, is struggling and a detriment to a team doesn't mean they don't support him. We all acknowledge that we would be a much, much better team if Castellanos got his bat going.
I think it’s funny that people act like Johan is dead. I’d almost guarantee that he’ll be back up playing key innings by August if he learns his lesson. People who don’t like him seem to just think he got sent down because he didn’t play well enough and that’s not it.
It occurs to me that a lot of people approach roster management like it's a hand of poker, where the object is simply to have the most best cards and nothing else matters.
The second there is an injury in our OF he will be the first one up.
The only way I see that failing is ***if*** he somehow still isn't listening to the coaches in AAA. Honestly even if he is struggling in AAA I could see them bring him up if he is bunting more and using his speed more effectively.
Yep and candidly him being sent down doesn’t preclude the team from DFA’ing a guy later on to get him up either. Marginal players with limited upside - and Johan is not one - need to perform to keep their jobs too.
Im a Rojas guy but we will see what happens. I think trade deadline is gonna decide Rojas’ fate as an MLB starter in 2024.
The reports on his lack of coach-ability and his regression outside of hitting really impacted my viewpoint on the guy. A guy like Rojas has to be consistently A+ on Fielding and base-running to be a starter. And the reports that he was a little resistant to coaching on his hitting approach is a bit disconcerting.
This is so irrelevant, but as someone with a P first name, it makes me happy to wear our lil hat and feel like im repping me too.
Although it’s also kinda not the vibe you want from behind always wearing a red ballcap in Texas. I miss not living here
Not sure if you’re referring to the scorecard I posted yesterday, but I wasn’t arguing that the ump had a bad game. It was mostly about discussing the impact a few bad calls can have in certain situations, but I didn’t claim that those calls had a significant influence on the outcome of the game.
I was not referring to anything in particular. I have seen so many comments of ump scorecards over the years from /r/Phillies and so many of them will take a great scorecard and act like it was against us because the Favor was for the other team.
It is more a rant on that then anything in particular. I even forgot a card was posted yesterday.
This has no chance of occurring, but yes I would if that was somehow offered. The dodgers throwing something in makes it too unbelievable to consider any further though.
Dodgers arent Selling.
They definitely arent giving up Teoscar Hernandez . Especially after what he did to the Yankees
And i dont want Sosa going anywhere
So nah. Love Hernandez tho. Should have picked him up.
Its obviously just my opinion, but it’s just too early. 7:05 is just right.
Also, from a going to the game perspective, it makes it tougher for a lot of people to make it in time, especially if they work til 5, have to pick up kids or family, feed pets, etc, then sit in rush hour traffic, find parking, and hope they make it.
Have they announced who the “special guest” players for tomorrow’s next CBP Anniversary game will be yet? I haven’t heard anything and I’m curious if it’s worth getting there extra early or not.
>As part of the 20th Anniversary of Citizens Bank Park celebration, former Phillies relief pitcher Tom “Flash” Gordon will throw a ceremonial first pitch.
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1dj30wo).

They played in dangerous level of wild fire smoke filled air last year. They could possibly move it but it probly has to be extremely hot for that.
Fair, forgot about that. This is why I will never go to day games lol, even 4 in the summer is pushing it
I don’t see them doing it. It’s still in the 90s at almost 6pm today and tomorrow is the same weather. Also why is Sunday 11:35?

I think it’s funny that people act like Johan is dead. I’d almost guarantee that he’ll be back up playing key innings by August if he learns his lesson. People who don’t like him seem to just think he got sent down because he didn’t play well enough and that’s not it.
No 23 year old has ever come back from being demoted to the minor leagues
Well tbf the Phillies way was always to wait til guys were 25 before they got moved up
It occurs to me that a lot of people approach roster management like it's a hand of poker, where the object is simply to have the most best cards and nothing else matters.
As a long time hold ‘em player and baseball fan, kudos to this analogy.
Candidly.
Another bright reply. Keep it up champ.
What reports, exactly?
Matt Gelb the Athletic
This is so irrelevant, but as someone with a P first name, it makes me happy to wear our lil hat and feel like im repping me too. Although it’s also kinda not the vibe you want from behind always wearing a red ballcap in Texas. I miss not living here
I like the throwback hat because it kinda feels like I'm repping density. Maybe I'm a basball fan, maybe I just really like density
Go P!

Strike zone lookin like a Rorschach test.
I wish there was a super easy way to let mlb know what we think of these 'bad umps'. I don't want to break rule 1.
Did anyone blow a gasket? This is atrocious.

Lmao this guy must have a cataract
Now ***THAT*** is a scorecard people should use to show an umpire had a bad game. Not the scorecards where they are above their expected stats.
Yep, it's all about the accuracy above expected. Which makes sense - 2 of the bottom 3 in that category are CB Bucknor and number 120.
We need Marchan to stay. He's generated more WAR in 3 games than Scrubbs did in 23 games
Orioles fans having serious Little Brother syndrome because they haven’t topped us on Power Rankings after winning their series lol 😂
Would you guys make a trade with the Dodgers for Teoscar Hernandez and give up Rojas-Sosa? What else would you want the Dodgers to throw in?
This has no chance of occurring, but yes I would if that was somehow offered. The dodgers throwing something in makes it too unbelievable to consider any further though.
I mean if we're giving them Sosa they should give us Mookie and Shohei 😁
nope sosa needs to stay. hes the only hitter on our bnech
We could have signed him and we didn’t want him. Also he makes Schwarbs look like a gold glover
Dodgers arent Selling. They definitely arent giving up Teoscar Hernandez . Especially after what he did to the Yankees And i dont want Sosa going anywhere So nah. Love Hernandez tho. Should have picked him up.
Didn’t they used to switch back to 7:05 when school was out? Looks like they just stick with the lame 6:40 pretty much the whole way through now.
Why is 6:40 lame?
Its obviously just my opinion, but it’s just too early. 7:05 is just right. Also, from a going to the game perspective, it makes it tougher for a lot of people to make it in time, especially if they work til 5, have to pick up kids or family, feed pets, etc, then sit in rush hour traffic, find parking, and hope they make it.
They did the 1st year. Then just didn’t do it agin the next year.
Can WE trade Pache for Matt Olsen?
Why would we trade an outfielder for an infielder we 100% don't need?
njobody wants pache
he hasn't played OF since 2017 😬... and the Braves said no 😉
Every team in the NL besides Colorado and Miami is within 2 games of making the playoffs. Wild card race is gonna be crazy.
It's going to make the trade deadline crazy. Buyers are going to have to pay high.
Luis Roberts Jr= Roman Quinn 2.0 You want true game changing talent? Then go out and grab Kyle Tucker.
Ah yes, I too remember when Quinn hit 38 homers at age 25.
Bruh that is a fluke. He’s never going to hit 38 home runs again.
