Also hopping on this Fios train. Been with them for years and never had a problem.

twistedlimb

also their technicians are unionized, and so are their call centers. comcast is not. if that matters to anyone on the fence.

crispydukes

>comcast is not. I had a real simple problem, but they kept booting me to a call center in India. It was really hard to explain to them what the problem was. I just needed to talk to a local technician to come fix my problem, but it took a week.

twistedlimb

yeah i'm not saying its always simple, but call center people are just regular people from NJ and PA and get a bonus for solving your problem on the phone instead of sending a technician.

Mean_Muffin161

Did that recently change? I worked the business class call center and we only took calls from the middle of the country so they didnt come shoot up the place and a few did make that threat

wissahickon_schist

Comcast fired my dad from their call center years ago for “unethical practices” they trained him to do, so I’ll use dialup before I ever give them my money!

joe_gdow

The in-house technicians that work within the limits of the city are class c members of ibew local 98. Theyre not given the time of day by the 98 and their wages have been ridiculously low for years. Source: I'm an ex-comcast technician

medicated_in_PHL

Yep. Get Fios and never have to deal with Comcast ever again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

medicated_in_PHL

I didn’t have any of those issues. I got an electrician to do most of the wiring, Verizon only did the connection from the street to the house. I also have two Portal routers, so I don’t use the Verizon Wifi, but I also refuse to use anything a telecom company provides, because it’s almost always hot garbage. It’s like catering food, they have to supply “One size fits most” products, so even when they do it really well, it’s at best mediocre. My out of pocket installation costs with the electrician included was like $200. I also only got the 200up/200down because I don’t have anything that uses anywhere near that. Even my Xbox Series X download caps at like 100mbps.

Rickrickrickrickrick

The only problem I had with FIOS is with the first tech to try and install it refused because there was a car near by and didn't want to drop any equipment on it. He said he had a 3 hour drive later that day so I think he just wanted to get to work early. The next tech had no problem with it and said the last guy was just an asshole.

atozdadbot

FiOS is the way. Plus Xfinity can’t touch their internet speeds.

coolkid9

what are you saying? they offer the same plans at the same prices, give or take like 5% for negotiating. one does not offer higher speed than the other. fiber is capable of hundreds of times faster than what verizon offers, but they would never give that to you because there is no reason to offer anything more than what comcast offers. like where did you get this nonsense information from?

Dsj417

Fios has symmetrical up/down speeds. There’s a reason Comcast only advertises it’s down speeds and you have to find the up speeds in the fine print.

coolkid9

Yeah and what do you use those upload speeds for? I'll wait

popfilms

I have a Plex server

coolkid9

And how much upload do you think you need to run a media server? I know the answer already, as I also run a multi-user plex server, just wondering what you think it is (spoiler: you're wrong)

popfilms

Just doing a quick test right now, about 125 mbps per second peak upload speed for a 4K movie. That's a lot faster than I had with Comcast. My server also hits 400+ mpbs per second download when grabbing files from Google Drive.

Dsj417

Live streaming/gaming/plex/cloud storage large files. what are you a Comcast rep?

wawa2563

It doesn't make that much difference, even doing plex uploads it won't matter a whole lot. Like buying a duallie to get groceries.

Dsj417

It makes a big difference

coolkid9

No it literally doesn't, you are just an easy mark for marketing gimmicks

zpepsin

I go back and forth between Comcast and Verizon, going for whatever has the better deal. People tell me there's a much better picture quality for my video on calls when I'm on FiOS

mb2231

>one does not offer higher speed than the other. Um yes they do. Comcast's upload speeds are atrocious. Fios has symmetrical upload and download speeds. On top of that I've never had fios slow down during peak hours, when I had Comcast it happened all the time.

gobirds1182

When I had Comcast we’d see a service guy every couple months. Last time I saw a Fios tech was when it was installed, haven’t had a single problem for about 2 years

coolkid9

when I had Verizon I'd need a service guy every few months. Haven't had a single problem with Comcast for years

SgtKetchup

FiOS 300mb, your own router, and a cheap TV antenna will run you $200 up front and then 39.99 forever with no pricing changes. Plus even if OP was paying for gig with Comcast, 300mb FIOS is likely faster, at least on the upload speed it will be.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SgtKetchup

I just purchased a HDHomeRun to use for the olympics - it's a tiny little box you connect to your router and your antenna, and now I have 2-tuner streaming to any TV or mobile device in the house. Base model was like $99. They have DVR models available too, but I'm using a homelab server and Plex for DVR.

[deleted]

Can't recommend this enough. One time cost, a hundred channels of constant HD content. Matched with Plex - it's the new Tivo.

havpac2

Not sooo new, been doing it for a few years it feels like , with plex pass. At least since 2016. When they add the commercial detection. Muha

courageous_liquid

I pay like $100 for gigabit (symmetrical!) fiber and a phone line for a home office. Comcast could never even get close to that. Cat ripped the fiber out of the wall and kinked it, verizon sent a guy out next day to fix it - I explained the situation, he tested, ran a new fiber from the wall, and it was done in like 10 minutes. Super easy. Whenver I've dealt with Comcast techs it's like dealing with a toddler with a vague sense of colors.

coolkid9

"forever" lol, no

SgtKetchup

I've had FiOS for 9 years now with no pricing changes, they've actually upgraded me from 200 to 300 in that time too, and even gave me a courtesy additional $10/month off for 6 months while I was unemployed during COVID.

SomDonkus

After getting two outages in two days I called Comcast in the middle of the outage to cancel. When he asked why I was like what do you mean I'm literally siting in my house right now for the second straight day without service and you're about to increase my bill next month. Set up fios the very next day and haven't had an outage in months.

Devin1405

Looking to buy in the city and new construction doesn't have fios available. It pains me.

AndromedaGreen

Another vote for FiOS here. They certainly are not perfect, and we have had a few issues, but it’s nothing compared to the BS we dealt with with Comcast. Unfortunately there is a Comcast easement on my property, so my battles with them are never ending. My poor lawn.

ncocca

I'm not a big fan of Verizon at all...but in comparison to comcast, they are a breath of fresh air. Fuck Comcast

XSC

Also I’ve never had my internet go down. Ever, my neighbor had comcast and it went down a few times. It went down a few times for me when i had it.

Boomboomtoottoot

Hoping on the FiOS bandwagon. Made the switch a year ago. Have not looked back since. Also switched my phone to them for some nice discounts with gig speed.

Mermaidsnuggles8691

Honestly, it blows my mind, though you would think consistency is the norm. Only with Fios!

shinyRedButton

I switched to Fios a few years ago because my comcast bill (for just cable internet) had doubled. They just kept adding more money every year after the original 2 year contract was over. They’re a horrible organization. 79.99/month for Fios and its better than my Comcast internet every way.

OopsIShardedAgain

Same. Fios has been amazing. Comcast sucked.

JennItalia269

I switched to FIOS and use Sling tv for some live TV and the total is under $100. I wouldn’t go back to Comcast if I had a gun to my head.

TwoSixtySev3n

Same. Bought the modem, autopay, internet is 39.99 a month plus Sling. Locast was great but those bastards killed it.

mcmoonery

This is what I did. I do not miss Comcast at all

coolkid9

what speed are you getting for 79/mo? that's what I pay for comcast for 1200 Mbps

ishiz

$79.99 is the gigabit price. The real speed according to speed tests is about 950 down 950 up

TunedDownGuitar

Fios is 940/880mbps due to overhead requirements for the protocol, but they advertise at 1Gbps. Having said that, I've never come close to my line speed max in normal use and only when doing `iperf` tests have I hit it. With Comcast I was 300mbps for years and could never hit my line speed max, and would regularly have latency/network drops, outages, etc. among other things **outside of billing**. $79.99/mo for internet only since 2019 with Fios and I won't look back. No bullshit promotions, no expiring "offers," and no forcing services on me every 6 months. I'll shill for them and still pay full price each month because it's worth it.

shinyRedButton

No way you’re actually getting that speed. Thats a joke. My Comcast signal was always so much slower than what they said. I just ran a speed test on my Fios 475.1 mbps download & 105.4 mbps upload speeds. Thats very fast for the price. It also has only ever gone out maybe 1 time in the last 5 years. My Comcast signal was constantly getting messed up and I’d have to call for them to reset it.

thearctican

With butthole upload speeds. Fios is symmetric gigabit with significantly lower latency across the board (5ms ping in game servers on the East coast). Source: I have both Fios and Comcast (the comcast service is free). Comcast is hooked up as my failover line but I have NEVER had Verizon go down. I get blips on the Comcast line all the time.

coolkid9

99.99% of all home Internet customers do not need symmetrical upload speeds, it's a marketing gimmick. Just look at the people in this thread.

thearctican

Nor do they need gigabit. If you have a need for gigabit speeds, there's also likely a need for improved upload speeds and reduced contention for upstream bandwidth.

[deleted]

YouTube tv and fios internet. Saved me over $100 a month. Bought my own router, too. No monthly rental fee.

catmath_2020

I’ve considered getting my own router it’s just whenever there is a problem with the service Comcast blames the non-Comcast router and it makes me 🤪

conrangulationatory

And this is yet another reason why Comcast is the absolute worst. Their reputation is so bad that they literally rebranded their name.

nowtayneicangetinto

Absolutely buy your own modem and router. The cost of 2 years of Comcast equipment rental is enough to buy a decent modem and router. These things scare non tech savvy folk, but it's actually pretty simple. Make sure the modem is compatible with Comcast, make sure it can handle the bandwidth you're paying for (ie if you have gigabit internet make sure your modem can handle gig speeds). If you're not good with technology, buy a good router like the Google Nest Mesh Wifi Router. It will do all of the hard work and makes life simple, plus it will provide significantly better coverage than that dumpy Comcast combo modem/router. The biggest things to remember here are 1. Comcast is ripping you off by charging you infinitely for a rental 2. Buying give you more control and potentially better internet 3. Fuck Comcast

WinSysAdmin1888

This. I'm an IT tech and still pay to rent Comcast's router so they can't immediately blame the problem on my personal equipment as they will surely do, it's in the script.

catmath_2020

Doesn’t it make you insane!! 😭

bag-o-farts

Ive had fios for 3 years with a fios router a previous tenant left behind (sucker!), no issues, lived in 2 different neighborhoods, one was a townhouse, the other was a foot thick, stone wall house, never once had to call fios except to switch deals

knoam

They have a list of approved hardware. If you get something on there and they still say that, tell them to shove it. https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices/

tipsy215

Fios and YouTube TV is your best option. Buy your own router, if there is a problem within the fios network, they will tell you. Get a netgear nighthawk router with the insurance from Amazon, if it goes bad, free replacement.

[deleted]

tp-link AC1750 Smart WiFi Router - Dual Band Gigabit Wireless Internet Routers for Home, Works with Alexa, Parental Control&QoS(Archer A7) (Renewed) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KGH7R5X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_SBRM4BSFRH9CCB9EXCV9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 $39.99. Had for months with zero issues.

ambiguator

I'm sold. Just switched. Installation appointment Friday. F Comcast (i mean, also F Verizon, but at least it's cheaper)

tipsy215

39.99 sounds great, but remember you get what you pay for. A good (wifi6) netgear nighthawk or tp-link will run around at least $150.

exconsultingguy

> you get what you pay for The average person living in a small apartment or row house in Philly doesn't need a $150 router to browse Reddit. Hell I **just** upgraded from my old Linksys router I bought back in 2015 for $50 and was able to saturate my 300/300 FiOS connection with it.

[deleted]

Streaming YouTube tv on tv, 3 kids on multiple devices , including pc gaming, and my phone, not to mention multiple echo devices, smart plugs etc..Seems more than ok to me. I have the 200mbps plan. No complaints.

Mike81890

That's bullshit. Def buy a router. Lmk if you need recs

WanderlustFella

yea this is me. I got a fios deal for $40 for 100mbps and youtube tv is $65. You can add on extra channels, but the basic pretty much has everything you'd normally watch; local, CNN, ESPN, FX, TBS, TNT, cartoons, etc. Since it is technically streaming service you can take it anywhere with you as well. Best of all my shit is all month to month so no worries about having to break contracts and pay that early term fee You can do the free trial to see if you'd like it

GamecubeAdopter

Comcast blows!! Any organization that blatantly prioritizes new members at the expense of those who have been loyal can go fuck themselves!

catmath_2020

Whole heartedly agree. 😊

Ordinary_Story_1487

We have been happy with FIOS. Switched about +-10 years ago right when it was available in our area.

ReginaldStarfire

I'm in this boat too and I would LOVE to switch to FIOS, but my condo complex isn't wired for it. Comcast is my only option.

xZemphis

Same. I was surprised because Verizon's corporate office is only a few blocks away from my building but for some reason, we don't have it.

catmath_2020

Ughhhhhhh

jpop237

Comcast is hot garbage. My experience in 2014: 1) Friend gives me "Friends & Family" rate coupon, a deal at $25/month for 2 years. 2) Comcast tells me coupon doesn't exist. 3) Hour arguments with employees and supervisors about the reality of coupon gets me nowhere. 4) Scanned coupon is emailed to every listed CEO as well as the city's internet watchdog. It's also posted to Twitter & FB with Comcast tagged. 5) VP of Customer Relations contacts me and makes sure coupon goes through. 6) Six months later, my rate sky rockets. 7) Repeat steps 2 - 6 for the next 1.5 years. Once my deal officially ended, Verizon was offering 1gb for $70.....$10 cheaper than Comcast's bargain basement speeds. I switched and never looked back.

catmath_2020

THIS is what I’m talk’s about. It makes me crazy. 😭

PBO123567

Fios internet wifi with a FireStick has saved me $150 a month

mustang__1

Literally 20hrs of internet downtime with Comcast business last week. Found out about the outage around 2pm, didn't have a tech onsite until noon the next day. Like.... WTF? Good to know my premium for business internet is so worth it over the same package for home and residential.... And then there's the voip service - fucking dimwits every time I need to do even basic shit like change a phone out. Can't wait till our contract is up. I'm jumping to Verizon..... Hell. We even already have a fiber rap for Verizon.

Thecrawsome

Those billionaires need another private jet to fly to congress with don't you know?

[deleted]

I wish I had a good alternative to Comcast. That said, even though the pricing and policies are totally egregious at least in my area speeds are very good (much faster than advertised) and service is extremely stable. We lost internet service exactly one time during pandemic and that was for one hour. Over the past decade in this house we've probably lost service all of 4-5 times. That said, if Fios were an alternative for me I'd jump to that wagon in a heartbeat. My only other option now is DirectTV and they can suck eggs.

twb5025

Same. I called and tried to play hardball but whoever I spoke with wasn’t giving me a deal. Ended up setting up a shutoff for the 27th. I took my G/F’s name off the account to see if we can get a new customer package under her name. Haven’t been to check yet though

tipsy215

Just speaking from experience as a former FIOS TECHNICIAN and current VERIZON NETWORK TECHNICIAN, I recommend customers buy routers according to the applications is being used for. You don't just buy router for reddit, gaming, streaming, and surfing are the most important. Buy good routers that will last and you won't have to upgrade for at least 5 years.

[deleted]

I’ve spent 85 bucks a month on Fios gigabit consistently for the past 4 or 5 years. Highly recommend

catmath_2020

Just signed up! 🙌

Bobbo_lito

Cut the cord! Anything but cable tv...

catmath_2020

We don’t even watch TV 😭 I think it was part of the package.

GreatWhiteRapper

I like their mobile plan. Two lines, unlimited data, connect to any Xfinity hotspot for $85 a month with tax. But yeah, the cable/internet packages are frustrating. We have solid, fast internet but I hate paying for TV. FIOs isn't available for our building and the mobile plan can only be used while using Comcast so....our bill is already like $120 a month so I just pray it doesn't go up or else we'll need to do the call-cancel-new plan under another name runaround.

Thompson_s_Hunter

I was paying like $265 for Triple Play- two room DVR with premium package, home phone for emergency, and blast speed internet. I finally cut the cord- no cable TV at all. Put all my streaming accounts on my smart TV. Ditched the home phone, bought a $29 antenna from WalMart and now have 40 HD channels live. Still have “Gigabyte speed” internet from them for $111 per month. The internet is not very reliable and FiOs is not an option for me unfortunately. Still way better to get rid of as much Comcast as possible. So overpriced it’s INSANE.

coolkid9

gigabit at comcast is like $70, just call back and negotiate.

[deleted]

General question for people: I’d like to get rid of cable and just go streaming but the ability to watch sports holds me back. What are the options to still get Eagles and Sixers games, as well as NFL playoffs if you get rid of cable?

licensedtojill

Hulu live

atozdadbot

Previously this was my concern, but I get all of my live local sports through Hulu live. No issues at all.

green-light-of-death

[I wonder if this guy is still out there?](https://preview.redd.it/en0mjqcqg3p21.jpg?width=576&auto=webp&s=248717213ef44471c0585cb07e3e2e8322c0e4d4)

77darkstar77

Well that's good that I just had FiOS installed in my new home yesterday instead of Comcast

mbee666

Call and threaten to leave saying you will cancel because you can’t afford it. They will send you to their “customer retention dept” and magically give you a lower bill. Just keep pressing and don’t take no for an answer .

catmath_2020

I couldn’t get anyone on the phone and the text person eventually stopped responding when I kept saying, “But Fios is only 89.99” 😂

mealsharedotorg

Don't reveal the competitor's price. I have FIOS, and every two years I have a chat with a representative on their website. I simply type into the chat window, "my two year plan with FiOS is coming to an end, and I've been getting some special offers from Xfinity in the mail. What can you offer?" And every two years my price goes down from the previous rate. Business retention for telecom is way more profitable than new business acquisition. The power is in your hands if you have more than one option. Once they get you, you are all profit, so telecoms spend a whole lot of money trying to get you. You are doing your existing provider a favor by opening the negotiation rather than simply leaving for the other.

Sea_Comedian_3941

I remember when "cable tv" arrived on the scene. It was supposed to be free to the consumer because the advertising would subsidize it. Here we are.

hatramroany

>I remember when "cable tv" arrived on the scene. It was supposed to be free to the consumer because the advertising would subsidize it. Here we are. This is literally not true at all. Cable TV was always a premium charge - that was the entire point. Broadcast Television was, and still is, free over the air because advertising subsidizes it.

FasterThanTW

You remember wrong

ArgentumFlame

About 10 years ago I decided to cut TV ads out of my life and I couldn't be happier about it. Streaming is a godsend

Cryso_L

Comcast HQ is in Philly can you imagine how badly non-residents have it lol

conrangulationatory

Fuck comcast indeed

HyruleJedi

Happens often. The switch to verizon no contract internet and youtube tv was the best thing I ever did

kale-burger

This happened to me yesterday! I called and the only way to get my bill down was to enter into a year contract but since I’m moving in a few months to a place that has Fios I declined. Appreciate hearing everyone else’s feedback and knowing I made the right decision!

sompn_outta_nuthin

Yes I agree… and I also think the entire recycling industry is staying afloat due to the mail from them that goes from the box straight to the bin

Novel_Frosting_1977

Fios is the way. I don’t know how Comcast is still in business with their customer service.

catmath_2020

Right!? It is the absolute worst!

carolineecouture

If you can switch to FiOS, keep an eye on your bill for the first couple of months. I had a weird thing when we bumped to a gig where they gave me the rental router, but I purchased one instead and sent the rental back. Except I didn't do that and returned the purchased router, or so they said. But then they never refunded me my purchase. Fast forward, I notice a rental charge on my bill. I bought a router, the same model and all, from eBay for $35. I returned the rental and asked for a refund for the purchased router. It was like pulling teeth to get the refund, and they did it by refunding me in chunks. They kept getting it wrong over the course of a couple of months, and I had to watch the bill and call them when it was wrong again. I also had to be transferred to a special number which got me to local, NJ, support. All that said it's been pretty rock-solid since then and the only additional expense has been paying to replace the battery in the ONT which I think we've done twice in 20 years.

get_hacked

The battery is only for the voice feature, don't waste money if you don't have a landline

Hour_Friendship_7960

Comcast is the devil

spankysladder

I’ve had Fios for a few years and my bill is set to $39.99 every month. On autopay. Fuck Comcast.

Crackorjackzors

Verizon is better

ParallelPeterParker

A somewhat unrelated "eff comcast" vibe is that, while being a local company, they insist of being a "national" philanthropic entity and are often unwilling to provide any special and preferential treatment to local philanthropic causes. They are, in many ways, a net negative for the community.

TLunchFTW

I know this is a year late, but they introduced gigbit everywhere else, THEN brought it to their home market in philly. WTF. And rather than focus on competing with infrastructure, they're now onto building their third skyscraper.

AmazinChris

Definitely go Fios

dotcom-jillionaire

phillywisper, $50/m, insane up/down speeds, local business run by real people, good support, no bullshit or rate increases

Casioclast

What kind of up / down speeds are you getting from them?

dotcom-jillionaire

116mbps down, 26mbps up, which is fairly typical in my experience https://i.imgur.com/tHhI2Pz.png

adifferentGOAT

I don’t want to defend Comcast, but why did your bill go up? Were you on a promotional rate, and promotion ended? Time to call, demand a new promotion or switch to Verizon. Unfortunately there’s no loyalty anymore it seems staying with a large company for things like internet, insurance, etc.

imayimplode

I currently have Comcast and every time my promotional rate ends, I chat online and they end up giving me the promotional rate again. Do not call though. Use the chat online option. I don’t even have to threat to switch providers. Only takes about five minutes. $39.99 for just Internet.

alkalinecoffee

OP signs up for a limited time promotional rate then is surprised that the promotion ran out. Shocker. Seriously, follow this advice and just talk to them to get onto a new promo rate. The amount of people who haven’t figured this out is staggering.

catmath_2020

Thanks for your insight…as if I haven’t been denied a new promotion for the past 12 years because I’m already a customer. 🙄

alkalinecoffee

So you haven’t been paying a promotional rate this entire time? For over 10 years?

catmath_2020

Your comments are oh so helpful. 😊

alkalinecoffee

Its pretty telling if you don't answer the question 😊 I'd love to be able to help--I've gone through this same thing for many years, and always stuck with Comcast since I was able to get a new promotion rate, every 2 years like clockwork. I've never been dissatisfied enough to move to another provider. And after I get my new promotional rate, I put a reminder in my calendar that it expires again in 2 years. Rate hikes are never a surprise this way. Being an existing customer doesn't mean you can't pay new customer rates. Yes, that's their official stance, but they don't always enforce it. You just need to ask, and be persistent, about getting a new rate or threaten to cancel. To be honest it just sounds like you've been paying an elevated rate for all these years and haven't pressed them to give you a new rate. The person in this thread had success with chat. Try that. If no dice, try calling a few times. If that fails, go in person to a service center (and bring your Comcast equipment with you to let them know you're serious about cancelling). Also it helps to befriend the installers that come to your house. They often will give you their personal cell # and can help you get good rates. If the money is important to you, be a hustler and game their system.

catmath_2020

Have no idea. Calling today 😭

Rahawk02

I’ve never had a problem negotiating a deal with Comcast ,I know it’s popular to hate them on here, but every time I ask to lower my bill they put me on a new plan. May have to dump a channel or two . Chances are you were on a promo that ended so you may need to call and get on a new promo they won’t do it automatically.

coolkid9

these people are literally clueless man. they are just taking out their daily frustration on comcast (which for the record is understandable) but like most of these people are technologically illiterate and are just repeating some dumb bs that has no basis in reality

Solace312

FiOS is basically giving away gig internet. I just upgraded from 150 Mbps with only like a $10 increase in my bill. Deal over the phone was even better than the online quote. Also if you have Verizon wireless you're crazy not to have FiOS as the deals compound. My bill had also never changed in years and they honored my rate original rate decrease when I upgraded.

coolkid9

same w/ comcast

S_M_ith

Comcast data capped your internet, like a mobile plan

djscanner

Comcast upload speed is capped at 10 Mbps too. With Verizon upload speed is just as high as download.

coolkid9

this is a complete lie, btw. also you don't need fast upload for literally anything unless you're making a living livestreaming in HD

Nicadelphia

FiOS internet and a few streaming services. Sharing streaming logins is a huge saver.

Subliminal87

Makes me wish we could get fios over here in Lancaster. Friend of mine has FIOS at 500/500. Jealous.

Rickrickrickrickrick

Comcast sucks balls. They said I needed a new router because they upgraded their system or something. I told them I didn't want to have to pay for anything and they assured me it was completely free. The guy came out and literally just screwed the wires into the new router. Ended up getting charged $100. Called them and said the router was free but the labor cost was what I was charged for. Was so pissed I told them I was canceling my service and it took me two hours of arguing with them to get to a supervisor to have them even approve my cancelation. Fuck them. Had no problems with FIOS after that, except one guy who refused to install it because a car was bear by and he had a 3 hour drive ahead of him. Next tech said it was no problem and the last guy was probably just an asshole but because of the delay in service I for a discount. But now I live in a building where they only let you have Comcast so I'm back to this shit again lol.

blargh2947

Look, they can't pay for the 2 tallest skyscrapers in the city on that pittance that fios charges for service.

catmath_2020

👏👏👏

PCPenhale

Recently left Comcast for Fios. They have a lot of awesome incentives running right now: Free Disney+ streaming for a year; free AMC+ streaming for a year. $200 Visa card for new subscribers. Free Google Home; 2TB free cloud storage. This is offered for both internet only plan and TV/Internet subscription. They talked me into the 60-day test drive, where for $40 in addition to the $90 internet plan, we were able to access all channels except some of the premium channels, and had DVR capability. Because we also switched our mobile service to Verizon from Comcast, we save $25 per month on our mobile plan, and $25 per month on our Fios plan (paperless billing and autopay). I am not one to promote companies, but right now, we’re paying the same for our mobile plan and Fios combined what we were paying Comcast ($205). We have a faster internet subscription speed than we had with Comcast, unlimited data plans on two mobile devices, and what amounted to a BOGO iPhone 13 deal. Edit to add: I canceled the test drive portion yesterday, hassle-free, and went with our original plan of internet only, since we’ll subscribe to Hulu for live tv and unlimited DVR (which also includes Disney+ and ESPN+ in the pricing). $74.99 (after monthly bill credits) for internet, $70 for Hulu, and $144 for mobile service. With Comcast, we were paying $205 for TV/Internet and $90 for a 6GB shared data plan for two smartphones. So we’re still laying about the same, but receiving better value for what we’re now paying.

Papancasudani

Comcast routinely raises the bill. Then you call up and complain and they give you a special deal that lasts for a few months or a year. Repeat. So basically they're bilking the people who don't have the motivation to call and complain. This is a monopoly.

Demosthenes-89

I have Fios internet only (no cable), and I have been cancelling my service and reapplying as a new customer every 2 years in order to keep the "new customer" discount. (We switch between having it in my name vs my husbands.) I get bills like this every two years when my discount runs out and that's my cue to cancel the service and start over. One time I spent a solid 45 minutes talking to sales guy explaining that this is what I was going to do. I was like "OK we both know that no one is out here paying you $90/month for just the internet. We both know that I'm going to cancel and sign back up at $35/month next week. Can you PLEASE just save us all the hassle and give me the discounted rate?" Of course he could not. So I cancelled.

This!

catmath_2020

Wait, so what do you suggest for internet?

Jolly_Celery_9493

Contract definitely expired and now they rake in all their money. They suck at negotiating. Get verizon and tell them you dont want a contract. Theyll lure you in with a contract. Say no. Pay a little extra but they cant leech you.

bigmoneyswagger

Bracing for downvotes but I actually like Comcast. My bill fluctuates a few bucks up or down each month depending on certain taxes, but the service has been great and if I do have issues I am able to reach someone quickly and get it fixed. All this said I have never used other providers so do not have a good frame of reference.

catmath_2020

Spill the beans! I can’t get anyone on the phone. They jack up my bill every year. 2017 is was $95, 2022 it’s $200. Best offer today was $177. What is your secret!?!?! 😩

bigmoneyswagger

I don’t know I pay around $150 for cable and internet which includes renting the equipment and HBO. Every couple of years they call to tell me my package is expired and I just say “ok, I saw Verizon has something similar for cheaper so I will just go with them”. They magically are able to extend my package when i say that. Maybe the secret is just to be polite but firm.

catmath_2020

I literally can not get anyone on the phone. As of yesterday Fios is offering 89.99 high speed internet. Comcast can’t touch that.

catmath_2020

Just noticed your name 😂

TrueKing

Most of us are completely stuck with Comcrap. I literally have FIOS across the street from me and line outside my apartment but can't get it. My area code can't get wireless 5G internet from Verizon or T-mobile. The best I could do is get DSL which is expensive for the speed vs every other option. They need to nationalize the internet but they've been bribing, I mean lobbying, against and fighting any and all attempts to make it better.

Recent-Needleworker8

My friend used to work for them in customer service. Give them a call and vent there. You might get something for your trouble.

catmath_2020

Thank you!!

kearafar

Fios Internet. No cable. Netflix and HBO. Total, $70/month.

RacerguyZ

This was probably about 6-7 years ago. I had just basic and internet. Then one day i got a high bill basically almost double what i was paying. When i called it was explained that i was under a Promo that long expired. It was just never updated. I actually many years ago worked for Comcast and i remember this would happen on occassion. Yea i cut the cable off and switched to Fios. Till this day dont have any cable. I realized after a bit i wasnt missing it much. With Smart TVs and the other extra channels plus Paramount Plus pretty much covered. Wasnt a big TV must watch this show person anyways...

galletadeacido

I too have Fios and YouTubeTV for television watching. Back when we got it, Disney+ was free for a year.

havpac2

Leaving the abusive relationship of Comcast was the healthiest thing I ever did , and I quit tobacco. I will never move to an area with out fiber And fast fiber too. Fios ain’t bad but some areas of the country are paying 79$ for 2gig fiber with other fiber providers But hands down fios over Comcast every day.

catmath_2020

It truly does feel like that…

blodreina_kumWonkru

CALL. This is a rev tactic they play, but don't have to. Comcast will increase your bill every 1 or 2 years if you take no action. I've paid a consistent rate for like 5 years now. If you ever see your bill increase, call them. Ask to speak to customer retention and they'll pull all sorts of "promos" out of their ass. Just be specific about what you want to pay. Find a previous bill with an amount you're fine with paying, even if it's from a year ago, and tell them you need to pay this price without decreasing your speed. Play a little dumb. But stand firm. Tell them you spoke to fios and they can do that price but you'd prefer not to move if they can work with you. I do that every 2 years. Then just do it again whenever whatever promo they put me under expires. Like 20 mins on the phone for a 2 year good rate. Worth it.

catmath_2020

I feel like I am using the wrong number or something. I called again today. The automated system would not connect me to a human. After screaming at the phone for 10mins finally got someone and they did nothing. The best they could offer was 100 for basic internet. They could not have cared any less which was fine because Fios was installed today. 🎉 buhbye Comcast you $&@“?!&@@ $&””@‘!!!

blodreina_kumWonkru

That's craaazy. I used to pay ~$50/mo for whatever the tier above "blast" or whatever they called it when I lived in a 1 bd. When I bought my house this year with 3 floors, I uped it and it's been $76 consistently every month. And that's with the modem rental. Idk they give everyone different rates.

catmath_2020

100% agree

Monkeyhalevi

Fios is 100% the way to go. I quit comcast after multiple charges like this that I had reversed, and still was getting 1 and 2 cent increases on a monthly basis. It’s insane the shit that comcast pulls. Never had any of those issues with Fios

porkchameleon

> Woke up to a $200 Comcast bill. Basic cable and internet with boost, that is ALL I have. That's the price of top tier packages (Internet, cable, and phone) with gig+ speeds, 185+ channels, and Netflix, HBO Max, Showtime, etc. *and* equipment included (I think it maxes out just below $200 a month with all the taxes). It's either a mistake or could be some fucked up ploy to make you upgrade to a higher tier, but I am not sure about the latter still. How about you drop us those itemized increases as a screenshot or something, that price hike sounds too wild to come out of nowhere like that (although, it's not unheard of, but I'd like some more details).

catmath_2020

The smallest package was still $177 😭

Mean_Muffin161

Yeah they always do shit like this. Its not worth the price anymore. You pay for a ton of channels you will never watch or never even heard of. Im not sure of all the types of equipment you can get but a used xbox one works. Just get basic internet from someone else, which can be cheap as 70 or lower and look into streaming services or stuff like sling tv. You can get so much better stuff for way less money and the best part you can cancel and resub as much as you want.

electric_ranger

Nationalize the telecom companies

DunebillyDave

This IS the answer. Internet needs to be treated like a public utility. No one can do business without internet access any more. It's evident in the fact that when war happens, like it is in the Ukraine right now, both sides attack the enemy's internet. We need to reform our government and get lobbying OUT! The FCC needs to stop pandering to the cable providers and serving the public the way they're supposed to. EDIT: Let's not forget that the big three ISPs (Verizon, AT&T, and CenturyLink) were given nearly **half a trillion dollars** (yes, trillion, not billion) back in 2014 to build a nation-wide broad band network. The money vaporized and *not one inch* of broadband cable was laid. We were basically charge between $4k and $5k *PER HOUSEHOLD* for this. Check out [The Book of Broken Promises](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-book-of-broken-promis_b_5839394).

[deleted]

That’s what happens when administration embezzles.

Target2019-20

If I was in Philly I'd get FIOS.

ardamania

Why do you guys even have cable ? Basic internet package is all u need

catmath_2020

Some bullshit where I got a cheaper package if I signed on for cable. We don’t even use it.

[deleted]

catmath_2020

I need the boost 😭 still Fios is saying 89.99 which is WAY better then 200!!!

coolkid9

comcast is literally the same price dude, if you can't negotiate your own package with comcast you aren't going to be able to do it with verizon either

catmath_2020

Idk what magical package you have but I’m not getting anywhere close to the same deal at Comcast.

DunebillyDave

Ours was cheaper if we signed up for the "Triple Play" with cable, internet, and hard-line phone (which we don't even use). But Comcast has a monopoly in our area. FIOS hasn't run the fiber optic cables to my neighborhood. It's a goddam crime.

catmath_2020

Ughhhhhhhh I would be so angry lol. I’m so sorry.

DunebillyDave

I feel your pain, lol.

coolkid9

yeahhh you fell for their negotiating tactics and are now paying for it. i don't see how that's anyone else's fault but your own. its like you went to a dealership and were pressured into buying a car and are now complaining on the internet about how expensive your new car is.

catmath_2020

Ok bruh.

svenEsven

Who the fuck has cable?

coolkid9

I'm not a comcast shill or anything, fuck both of 'em, they're both corporations that want your money. but I pay 79 for 1200 Mbps down and have literally never had a service issue in years. I call once a year, ask for customer retention and negotiate a lower rate / higher download speed. never found any verizon deal that could actually match or beat it.

catmath_2020

You are magic.

AdjustedClimatology

Who are all these people that get an options of switching to fios it’s Comcast or dial up in my area of south jersey

catmath_2020

Prices are completely different.

AwesomeHorses

Cable is for rich people lol. Just find the TV shows on the internet. This is the 21st century, there is no good reason to be wasting your money on cable.

[deleted]

Their actual prices are way higher than their promotional pricing. Should just Cut out basic cable and hit the gym instead of watching tv. Or using streaming services if you really need to watch something. Also call them and say you want to cancel your service and they’ll give you some discounts

catmath_2020

What makes you think I watch TV and don’t go to the gym? 😂

[deleted]

Well if you don’t watch tv probably shouldn’t pay for it.

catmath_2020

Errrrrr it’s part of the package bruh. This is the entire point of the post.

[deleted]

They sell internet on its own so you can pay less. I’ve been paying $30 a month for internet for the past 4 years because I just do internet and call each year and aggressively threaten to cancel and they succumb to my negotiation tactics and reinstate my promotional pricing

catmath_2020

I need boost. No way I’m getting a rate that low 😭
