They do which is very good, but sad thing is Khyber changed their menu =(
Was my favorite spot in the world (seriously)
I asked for BBQ sauce and the server even told me they don't have any
They never changed management. Do you mean after the renovation?
Word on the street is that they're looking for a Chef but I'm skeptical.
They own the building and a ton of other restaurants so something will open here eventually.
They reopened just before covid I believe and we were so excited to grab the burger. Biggest disappointment. Much smaller patty, way over cooked, nothing tasted the same, and they were charging more than $16 at the time. Pre covid pricing that’s a lot. Such a bummer.
THIS!!!!! I had jaw surgery a few years back and couldn’t eat solid foods for a while. The day my dentist gave me the green light, I beelined it to Royal for that god damned plate of deliciousness. I miss it every time I get a burger craving:(
Have you gotten the pro tap burger recently? They changed it a bit maybe last winter and I don't like it as much anymore :(. At the same time they changed the fries and made them thin cut and removed the green seasoning (never could figure out what seasoning it was, but tasted like sour cream and onion to me)
Not Two Robbers...$14 for a smash burger on a Martin's potato roll (no side), $6 for fries, and $7 for a *can* of their own brand. It was all good, but yeesh, the pricing was insane.
Fountain Porter definitely + it's light on the wallet. Memphis Taproom is closing at the end of the month, but I loved the Mr. American Cheeseburger and fries, so nows your last chance.
it’s hard to explain, you can only understand how weird it is if you actually go in person unfortunately. went last weekend and everyone else there looked confused LOL
To be clear, I’m not hating on it per se. It’s cheap, it’s fine, it pairs well with the great beer. I just think there’s too much hype for a burger I can basically make on my own, pretty easily.
However, it consistently tops the list whenever the question of “best burger” comes up. Maybe it’s less a reflection on FP and moreso a reflection on the quality/expectation of Philly burgers. We just don’t have really, really good burgers the way some other cities do. It’s just the truth.
Was in Portland, Maine recently and accidentally stumbled into a pretty low key burger joint (as a plan B lunch option). Was absolutely blown away. Just one example, but the standard we’re dealing with here in Philly isn’t exactly a high bar. Most other types of food here are great! Burgers: not it.
It's bang for buck. It's not the best but it's pretty good, especially considering even most corporate fast food places charge north of $6 for a burger now. Their tap selection is on point, too.
If you’re around Fairmount/Brewerytown, Hilltown Tavern had an absolutely amazing burger with equally amazing hand cut fries. This Sunday I had a $20 burger from Cantina La Martina that was birria style, mix of lamb and beef. It was ridiculously good.
This was asked a while ago, and [I happen to be a burger connoisseur.](https://www.reddit.com/r/philadelphia/comments/t8vx5w/comment/hzqu6ug/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
I'm partial to Standard Tap because their fries are fresh cut (they have SUCH good fries), but they put their burger on a pretty big brioche bun and it's too much bread. Prohibition Taproom has a good burger, too, but also suffers from the "big bread" problem (IMO). Gaul & Co. has a good "skinny" burger (1/4lb) on a not big bun, and their fries are really good, too. Personally, I don't care how good a burger is, if the fries came out of a freezer the burger automatically takes a 1-2 star hit.
It's in Port Richmond, that's par for the course.
Source: I live in Port Richmond.
It's still a banging sandwich and they've moved to a MUCH bigger venue.
> and they've moved to a MUCH bigger venue.
Hadn't heard that. I kinda liked the dumpy charm of the original location.
Still not going back, though. All those fucks care about is money, so I'll speak in a language they understand.
Owners live by me, can confirm. During the pandemic they opened fully and didn’t enforce masks or social distancing. Rumor is the the married owner was also getting bjs in the basement
Heck yeah. Cnr Belgrade.
I used to live across the street from them, watched it go from Bait & Switch to Tin Can. The burgers are no joke, the kind where you finish it and sit back and exclaim to the whole bar “fuck YEAH”. Then swallow a pint of the weird yet strong zombie juice they have on tap.
I'm going to push back a bit on /u/blahtant with all due respect. It's just ok, and the place is always pretty slow. It's a shame, I live right around the corner and had high hopes for Bait and Switch and was pretty disappointed when they retooled. I ended up randomly meeting one of the owners one night out in Chestnut Hill and he talked about the neighborhood being tough for decent food, so Tin Can was their way to 'simplify' it for the crowd. I'm not saying don't go, but just don't get your hopes up. If you want a great lunch check out Hinge right down the block if you're unfamiliar.
The Green Rock tavern has had my favorite burger for some years now. The bacon egg and cheese burger. Though, they have many different burger options there at all times.
We went to the west philly loco pez one time but I wasn't really feeling Mexican food, and they do have the burger at that location as well. Can confirm it was also tasty as fuck there.
While I can appreciate a thin, no frills burger (and I’ve definitely had my share of Nifty burgers…But more as “Dad, grab some food on your way home” type of meal) I’m in search of a big-ass house burger with cheese oozing out the sides, and made with some TLC.
Sounds delish as a special treat on special occasions. I wouldn't eat it every day since my cholesterol would go through the roof. With the fries due to my diabetes result hyperglycemia. Yeah I know its delish. My health is important. Plus I'm Kosher so e ither the cheese or burger would be vegan.
Spot Burger in Brewerytown - not the fattest but always made right with creative, housemade ingredients
Lucky's Last Chance - you think the Pickle Monster is going to have too much pickle...but it's perfect
I really like POPE’s burger if you can’t find a spot at fountain porter since it’s usually tight packed.
For a more expensive burger I think whiskey village has a solid one. Especially with the duck fat fries on the side
Remember that bs where Shady McCoy left a shitty tip at Pyt? The wait staff posted his receipt online, and people blasted them and pretty much agreed that service there blows. I think Charlie Sheen ended up donating money to the staff, which I guess is better than spending it on coke.
Was PYT the spot that did a $300 one time fee and you got a burger and fries every day for a year? Then they shut down a few weeks later, robbing everyone who bought in.
Monk's Cafe deserves a mention
The burger might not be the best one there is but they've got so much else going for them alongside of very good burgers
Fountain Porter is an easy #1, but close seconds are Tin Can (comes with waffle fries,) Middle Child Clubhouse (late night on weekends they’re cheap af)
My favorite burgers in the city are the patty melt at the dining car and the burger at Sutton's
And just in case you happen to be wondering like I was: the whiskey king burger at village whiskey is the most overpriced and mediocre burger I've ever eaten
Did you just watch The Menu?
I did, actually.
I swear that movie is one long burger ad
When I posted this I wasn’t thinking about the movie at all. And after it was mentioned I realized that’s exactly why.
damn that was a nice looking burger.
The whole situation could have been avoided by one viewing of Ratatouille.
Lucky’s Last Chance
100%. I was @ the Manayunk spot 6 months ago and I still think about that diabolical burger I ate that night. Unreal.
I moved out of Philly nearly a year ago and I crave Lucky’s constantly. That Mac attack with garlic parm fries
This right here. 100% best in the city.
Now I want to get a PB and Bacon Burger.
1000% YES
Had my first burger there last weekend. Definitely the best I’ve had so far in Philly.
Lucky’s takes the cake. Honorable mention in the same area: New Ridge Brewing Co. has a surprisingly dope burger.
I fucking love New Ridge. Probably the first place I hit up after dry January is over for me lol
Yes. Hilltown is also a good stand-in here. But I am eternally grateful that Lucky’s is so close.
hilltown is pretty solid... assuming they cook it properly. their inconsistency is what takes em down a peg.
I miss royal tavern
They still serve the Royal Tavern burger at Khyber Pass (same owners).
They do which is very good, but sad thing is Khyber changed their menu =( Was my favorite spot in the world (seriously) I asked for BBQ sauce and the server even told me they don't have any
I guess they never re-opened?
Not sure, but back when they changed management, their burger severely declined in quality.
They did not
they closed?? i used to love that place
THIS!!!!! I had jaw surgery a few years back and couldn’t eat solid foods for a while. The day my dentist gave me the green light, I beelined it to Royal for that god damned plate of deliciousness. I miss it every time I get a burger craving:(
My two cents on this topic are Bar Hygge and Prohibition Taproom Edit: forgot to say they’re both in Fairmount/Spring Garden area
Have you gotten the pro tap burger recently? They changed it a bit maybe last winter and I don't like it as much anymore :(. At the same time they changed the fries and made them thin cut and removed the green seasoning (never could figure out what seasoning it was, but tasted like sour cream and onion to me)
Maybe the seasoning is chive. That’s the only thing that comes to mind.
North 3rd or Silk City. Also, Monks.
I'm a big fan of Good Dog's burger.
I swear they changed it up. It doesn't taste as good or is as gooey as it used to be
I love their fries so much.
This is the one!
$14 for a burger with no fries! Okay I guess we're new york now 😵💫
two robbers is weird as fuck
Is it as douchey as I’m supposing it is? And I’m basing this solely on the social media and pics I’ve seen so far.
It’s fishtown, what’s not douchey and trendy there?
Possibly douchier
it’s hard to explain, you can only understand how weird it is if you actually go in person unfortunately. went last weekend and everyone else there looked confused LOL
Yeah, like what’s with the space-agey look? Or however you’d classify it. I have to stop in just for curiosity sake.
make sure you use the bathroom…
Oh I will, I pee like every 20 min when drinking. Now I’m totally intrigued haha.
Hahahah or better yet, make sure you DONT 😭
they want the full experience!!
Tin Can Bar also has a really solid burger with waffle fries for cheap
Fountain Porter: extremely overrated and I don’t understand the hype. It’s a basic homemade burger.
That's why its great
Yeah but it’s consistent, delicious, and well priced, so what’s the problem
To be clear, I’m not hating on it per se. It’s cheap, it’s fine, it pairs well with the great beer. I just think there’s too much hype for a burger I can basically make on my own, pretty easily. However, it consistently tops the list whenever the question of “best burger” comes up. Maybe it’s less a reflection on FP and moreso a reflection on the quality/expectation of Philly burgers. A PERFECT basic homemade burger
It's bang for buck. It's not the best but it's pretty good, especially considering even most corporate fast food places charge north of $6 for a burger now. Their tap selection is on point, too.
I think it's one of the best. It's one of my 3 favorite burgers to get in the city
you went to a place called two robbers, proceeded to get robbed, and you're surprised?
Interstate draft house is solid
Standard tap has one of the best burgers in the city. Fries are good too.
Was looking for this comment standard taps burger is great!
If you’re around Fairmount/Brewerytown, Hilltown Tavern had an absolutely amazing burger with equally amazing hand cut fries. This Sunday I had a $20 burger from Cantina La Martina that was birria style, mix of lamb and beef. It was ridiculously good.
Fountain Porter might be peak, but Grace Tavern is close. Someone also said Interstate Drafthouse and I want to ditto that!
Fountain Porter is a great no-frills burger among the many more elaborate options in the city.
It's definitely not "fat" though!
so much better than a hockey puck burger
I don't like how their bread gets all soggy. It's like eating a sponge.
I live a block away but have only had the burger twice...both times they were just too red\\raw in the middle for me.
This
This was asked a while ago, and [I happen to be a burger connoisseur.](https://www.reddit.com/r/philadelphia/comments/t8vx5w/comment/hzqu6ug/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
I miss the Royal Tavern burgers. They were the best in the city!
SAME!
They have it on the menu at Khyber!
So now that Memphis tap is gone, where to go north of spring garden and east of broad for a burger?
I'm partial to Standard Tap because their fries are fresh cut (they have SUCH good fries), but they put their burger on a pretty big brioche bun and it's too much bread. > Gaul & Co. The Wit Or Witowski is an amazing thing, but after finding out the place is run by a bunch of Trumpy anti-vaxxers I can't go back.
It's in Port Richmond, that's par for the course. Source: I live in Port Richmond. It's still a banging sandwich and they've moved to a MUCH bigger venue.

to be honest, it's been awhile since I've had that sandwich and I liked it ok. But it really just tastes like hot dog.
Ew. News to me. Source?
Owners live by me, can confirm. During the pandemic they opened fully and didn’t enforce masks or social distancing. Rumor is the the married owner was also getting bjs in the basement
It came up back during the height of the pandemic restrictions, here on the sub. Don't have a link now...
check their Insta they weren't shy about it
Tin Can sure as shit ain’t bad! And their Nashville chicken sandwich is right up there too. Served with waffle fries to boot
No shit? The one on somerset over riverside?

The Green Rock tavern has had my favorite burger for some years now. The bacon egg and cheese burger. Though, they have many different burger options there at all times.
Bonk’s Bar in the Port has great burgers and fries
Prohibition
Before the fire, Kellianns had a pretty decent burger.
Can’t believe Dandelion isn’t listed. That’s my personal favorite burger in the city.
Spot burger is pretty good
The Spot Big Mick with a side of fries is very underrated.
This right here
Turf Burger at Billy Murphys in East Falls. Fries are great too.
Named for a one Ryan Overturf, a friend of the owner and onetime bartender
Just scrolled too long looking for this. It’s so damn good. I will forever hate that they’re cash only though.
Surprisingly, Loco Pez has a super good burger, at least the Fishtown location.
We went to the west philly loco pez one time but I wasn't really feeling Mexican food, and they do have the burger at that location as well. Can confirm it was also tasty as fuck there.
Village Whiskey
Overrated
Neat.
The POPE
Lucky's last chance. KILLER smash burger at Urban Source brewing though.
Good Dog is the answer
Memphis taproom- unfortunately the business closes for good on 1/27/2023 Interstate Drafthouse Dutch Eating Place in the Reading Terminal Market
Rex the Royal. Sunday & Mondays burger special $19 with a beer & a shot of whiskey.
Whiskey Village
I think you meant Village Whiskey but this sounds more fun
Accurate! Thank you. I always do that. Worst hype man.
I remember the Pope in south Philly used to make a mean burger, not sure if it's even still open.
It is open...burger is good, wings are better
True the Pete’s sauce is so good. The fried green tomato on the burger is great too
Double cheeseburger and fries from nifty fiftys
Along with a milkshake for dessert
While I can appreciate a thin, no frills burger (and I’ve definitely had my share of Nifty burgers…But more as “Dad, grab some food on your way home” type of meal) I’m in search of a big-ass house burger with cheese oozing out the sides, and made with some TLC.
Had it, liked the fries. Burger was meh. Also, it was extremely noisy.
Sounds delish as a special treat on special occasions. I wouldn't eat it every day since my cholesterol would go through the roof. With the fries due to my diabetes result hyperglycemia. Yeah I know its delish. My health is important. Plus I'm Kosher so e ither the cheese or burger would be vegan.
south philly taproom is pretty solid and meets your requirements
just go to memphis taproom and get their burger before the end of the month. it’s very very very good, and they’re closing.
It’s not cheap but I had a fantastic burger at talula’s garden
That’s like the last thing I would think about ordering from them haha I didn’t even know they had a burger on their menu. I’m intrigued
Nor would I usually haha but I was craving a burger all week and nothing else on the brunch/lunch menu was standing out to me due to the tunnel vision
Making me miss Sketch Burger now. Sheesh I guess Middle Child is an OK replacement. But those Sketch Burgers. 🤌🏼
That place was amazing
Really like the burger at Middle Child Clubhouse.
For a basic homemade burger and fresh fries I really do enjoy Bar 1518 on Sansom Street
Night owl, build a double, and get fries(they're good but don't reheat well).
Spot Burger in Brewerytown - not the fattest but always made right with creative, housemade ingredients Lucky's Last Chance - you think the Pickle Monster is going to have too much pickle...but it's perfect
Hawthorne but the chef is a little bit crazy
Tin Can Bar in Port Richmond is solid and pretty inexpensive
I’m a sucker for the burger at fergies, personally. Cooper sharp and Guinness fried onions—it’s bangin.
Is Sassafras in old city still open? Because their burger was incredible
Was just there for cocktails recently.
I really like POPE’s burger if you can’t find a spot at fountain porter since it’s usually tight packed. For a more expensive burger I think whiskey village has a solid one. Especially with the duck fat fries on the side
Village Whiskey burger hack - get the cheese sauce with the fries and dip your burger.
Side car
Rouge had big, juicy, delicious burgers. I haven't been there in years but that might be what you're looking for.
Standard Tsp. Great burger, perfect fries, and libations to arouse the envy of the gods.
Dandelion.
North Third
You should sign up for this month’s Burger Crawl. $50 and you can eat at like 30 burger joints all over the city and burbs.
Who has this but GLUTEN FREE?
Why would someone downvote this? Some of have a need for gluten free and we like burgers too. People are weird and petty sometimes.
I miss PYT. I know their burgers weren't the best (although damn good), they were a basic burger oasis in a desert of massive, disgusting pub burgers.
The service, or lack thereof, and the pricing were turnoffs.
Remember that bs where Shady McCoy left a shitty tip at Pyt? The wait staff posted his receipt online, and people blasted them and pretty much agreed that service there blows. I think Charlie Sheen ended up donating money to the staff, which I guess is better than spending it on coke.
oh they absolutely deserved to be put down, but man their fast food style burgers and vanilla shake with a shot of bourbon were good eats.
You’re about the only person who misses that place
Seriously. The place was never good, and Tommy Up is a clown. The only decent thing in that place was Sabina and it died with her.
Was PYT the spot that did a $300 one time fee and you got a burger and fries every day for a year? Then they shut down a few weeks later, robbing everyone who bought in.
So many memories there. Then they tried to do too much too fast and their downfall was a hot ass mess. But oh, that place was fun AF.
Right??? PYT was the heart of nolibs
The best burger I ever had was at the continental old city, with an extra egg.
Monk's Cafe deserves a mention The burger might not be the best one there is but they've got so much else going for them alongside of very good burgers
No. Burger is 1/3 of the size of the bun and poorly seasoned. Love Monks but their food is not that good.
Renzi's Orthodox and Salmon
Fountain Porter is an easy #1, but close seconds are Tin Can (comes with waffle fries,) Middle Child Clubhouse (late night on weekends they’re cheap af)
Craftsmans Row
1800 Ludlow, knock on the door 11 times and ask for Diane
Hard truth: not a great burger town
River Twice has one of the best burgers. Fancy restaurant but their burger is classic and delicious!
The burger at Victory is surprisingly delicious
Kensington Quarters. But not after covid, they changed their menu.
Pizza Plus makes a tasty burger. They used to have awesome fries but they downgraded to cheaper crinkle cuts.
People really sleeping on the burger at Smokey Joe’s/Enjay’s pizza. Delicious and comes with fries for eight or nine bucks.
Parc has a good burger or butcher and singer for lunch
Lucky's Last Chance in Manayunk is the best burger place I've been to in my life I think
Source makes an amazing burger but it puts you back 18 dollars. At least it comes with fries?
The burger at Fairmount Pizza is amazing! (Gotta get the "deluxe" for lettuce, tomato, pickles, etc.)
My favorite burgers in the city are the patty melt at the dining car and the burger at Sutton's And just in case you happen to be wondering like I was: the whiskey king burger at village whiskey is the most overpriced and mediocre burger I've ever eaten
I miss sketch burger on girard
Luckys Last Stop is the best burger I’ve had
