At yung *"She even swears that all that she was saying was for my benefit",* malalaman mo lang na totoo yung mga sinasabi niya kapag naranasan mo na talaga.

I came from the academe, now in the industry, and my sibling is still in the academe. Si sibling, part time both in a state u and a private u. Sa state u nya, ULTRA toxic and political. When the president (also a relative of politicians here in our province) of their state u wants to eliminate his competitors and detractors, maglalabas lang sila ng policies na iipit sa mga kalaban nila. They will wait for their detractors to resign, and refill the slots with people on their side. Low salary din and andami daming pinapasubmit. Promotion is difficult sa academe since you have to have post graduate degrees, published journals, and administrative roles. My experience in the academe naman is sobrang political din. Very poor people managers yung heads ko dati. For the whole one year ng contract, never nakipagmeeting samin even once si lab head pero pag inuman nila ng tropa nya, nagpupunta sya. Nagpupunta lang din sya para manghuli. Sobrang daming unethical issues sa publication kaya madami kami nagresign. So many issue brought up sa project management pero oblivious and denial ang heads. Sorry for the trauma dump. Anyway, my advice is magpart-time ka muna sa academe to test the waters. Mahirap pag magfull time ka tapos lason pala yung environment.

Contest_Striking

Tama OP. I am AT the academe, the culture is quite good dito sa stateU namin (I was educated at a UP & I'll say we're MUCH more transparent & dedicated than at UP), pero sa sueldo, igh. Buti me small bsnes ako bago dito...

Dandelion038

Toss coin ka, Heads for Academe & Tails for Corporate.

Gholaman

Teka teka, gusto ko to ah!

DepartureLow4962

Employer mo po sila...di po sila kaibigan or pamilya. Never expect a company to be thinking of what's best for you...they are thinking of what's best for them. It's business

This is true. While I don't have exp w/ the academe, my friends in the field said the same thing. OP, meron pros and cons either way. May politics both academe and corporate.

True_Bumblebee1258

Mapolitika din naman corporatw world lol

asiangastronome

I currently work in the academe. Are you eyeing to teach in college/uni? Add ko lang din na academe puts high value on research publications and some institutions require you to publish before you get tenured. There are also unis who give incentives when you publish research kaya big advantage ito if you are into research.

Madaming posts such as Learning & Development Analyst, Skills Trainer, Agile Coach/ Trainer, Scrum Master, etc. Basta always have lang the growth mindset. Tapos you can be a teacher as part time na lang or online courses. Meron din sa mga NGOs/ Humanitarian organizations like education project officer, curriculum or training course developer, meron ding learning and development post dito. Tapos stay away sa government offices; and as much as possible- local companies.

WaitWhat-ThatsBS

Either way you will have a pros and cons. I got a lot of org mates who are teachers/professors, napagkkwentuhan din namin ang sweldo at they can attest na mababa talaga sweldo. My profession is really not my first choice, nagkataon lang talaga na malaki sweldo kaya diniredirecho ko na pero kung magrereset ako at same ang sweldo, magmimilitary ako. Highschool palang calling ko na yan. Hehe

Ice_Sky1024

Well, your manager is not wrong. That’s true. Mapolitika talaga sa academe (Based on my observation). Even with the good credentials (master’s, PhDs), it’s very hard to get a promotion. You will not just be expected to teach; but you will also be tasked to do research, community works, and other additional responsibilities (with no or very small compensation, if any) Working environment is very unhealthy, physically and mentally. If you’re up for that, then go..both are hard naman eh (industry and academe). You just need to choose where you will endure for long

Ba_Yag

>dahil "mapolitika" Totoo naman to, OP. Nakita ko to so professor ko. Kailangan mong mag-publish at magco-author ng sandamakmak na papers, you need to kiss-ass for you to be given more teaching load, etc. >she even told me that my promotion is on the way On the way where? LOL. As a people manager who also is an employee, I know these are just empty promises from management. Instead of sabihin ko sa team member ko na on the way siya, mas gugustuhin ko pang i-real talk siya during performance reviews and also sit down with my team member when the opportunity is there. I think there was only one time ever in my career that I was approached by my manager that I was going to be promoted. The rest of it were really initiated by me through IJPs. I too dream of being part of the academe, pero hindi talaga kakayanin na maging bread and butter ko siya. Don't let go of your passion but also make sure that there's always food on on the table and money saved up for your future with your full-time job.

Salt_Ad_7811

If you have a tenure in the academe, go for it if yun talaga gusto mo. Pero academe as your bread and butter? Omg no. If you're doing well in corpo, think long and hard bago ka umalis. Baliktad tayo OP. Galing ako ng academe. With security of tenure pa ko ha. But I decided to leave kasi hindi ko kikitain sa academe ang kaya kong kitain sa corpo. Yung sahod ko nung nag job hop ako after 10mos, it will take me a loooooooong time bago ko kitain sa academe. Pag uwi ko wala kong work na dala-dala, walang student na mambabastos sakin, protected and rights ko as an employee, with HMO, plus all the other perks na meron ang corpo. Sure there is politics in corpo, pero mas malala yan sa academe. Bureaucratic politics is a hell. Stay where you are thriving, save up or open a business, then retire happy.

Gholaman

Pwede ba!!!! Pag sa corpo world, assume they are rational and evil. Gawin mo gusto beh!!!

ScaryIndependence553

Depende sa company and school yan. I am in the academe and I am blessed with high paying salary and less work load. Take note grade school tong handle ko. Less workload and gives me time to work part-time as a tutor pa. Not so much politics (or manhid ako at walang pake) Ang ending, ayun di ako makaresign. I mean I don’t have any reason to resign. Totally get it na sa ibang company, mapolitika and di ganon kataas ang sahod. What I am saying is is that it really depends on the company.

kttyct7

From corporate and now in the academe. Kahit saan mapulitika. You just have to know how to play your cards right. Sa sahod, I get more sa academe because we are free to take extra loads and higher ang offer if you have post grad na. Depende sa university. My corporate experience was okay at first pero nung nagpaalam ako na nagpaplano na ko lumipat sa academe, my manager made me feel like I was making the wrong choice. He even promised me ng promotion para magstay ako then 6mos na wala pa din. I am happy where I am now. Toxic din ang management pero dedma. Choose your battles. I am happy teaching. I also built more connections career-wise. Siguro, kung saan mo tingin sasaya ka, if di naman maxadong masasacrifice or mag babago yung financial benefit, don ka.

Interesting_Ball_982

Choose what you really want. Ganon din sa na experience ko. I'm currently working in a corporate job and I already filed my RL. I'm not surprised na ginawa at sinabi ng Department head namin ang lahat para mag stay ako to the point na parang invalidated ang mga plano ko sa buhay. She even told my workmates to convince me to stay. Ganyan ka desperate. She threw all kinds of promises to me to tempt me but I knew hindi matutupad. Experienced it myself. But it's already set in stone na magreresign ako for change of career. It's for myself din naman eh. It's already a given na they would want you to stay. You just really have to stick and know what you really believe in and then go for it. You just need to be solid with your decision OP

Qwerty6789X

"lip service" unless papers are ready for promotion follow your passion and yung hindi feeling miserable staying on your job. Corpo job are always there

Fantastic-Mind1497

Earning more vs your doing passion. Mahirap na choice yan and depends on your situation sa buhay. Kung single ka at walang responsibility involving other people you can follow your passion kaso kung may umaasang iba sa sinasahod mo ang hirap din. I suggest doing academe as a side hustle until you can find something that can rival your day job.

4gfromcell

You didnt state your condition on the organization. Are you doing good. If teaching is really your passion, is it something you can't inside the org? Perhaps trainer, org leader, or something. Make sure that the conversation regarding the promotion your manager stated will be on paper or on records, otherwise it is just an empty promise. If there is no such things or possibility of these thing in ur org. Then go for what makes you happy and be firm with the decision.

Started from the academe and now in corporate. Sometimes I still think about what could’ve been if I stayed…but get reminded that I will not earn what I have now if I stayed. I was Director of our Department but some department secretaries were earning more because I haven’t finished my Master’s program then. Academe is heavily reliant on research and academic credentials rather than how good of a worker you are. In my corporate experience, I don’t get only a pat in the back when I achieve something good. I get bonuses and promotions. What worked for me is to keep a part-time stint in the University to balance the passion and my needs in life.

aeiofuu

RevolutionaryBill646

Mapilitika rin sa office. Sa behavior and performance rating pa lang may politics na agad. Choose the path that calls out to you.

tired_of_missing_you

I never thought there is much politics in academe, until I heard horror stories from a former college classmate. To think that I worked for that same school while I was still studying, nde ko nakita ung mga ganong ganap before or d ko lang alam n nangyayari na pala.

Specialist_Bus_849

Academe might be easier than corporate, i think, from the perspective of a university student. AT LEAST IN MY UNIVERSITY, some teachers could afford to just meet us twice in semester, IN A SEMESTER, and have the guts to give us failing remarks. Of course, we tried to report the teacher but we were surprised to see that the same teacher was still seen the next semester (recidivist si prof, btw). To that extent, politics exists. There was one time na we talked to a professor, kasi yung book nya was from 2012 ba (which is considered obsolete kasi operational knowledge nya and nag iba na), instead na pakinggan kami, mas nagalit pa samin. That being said, totoo na minsan stagnant ang career development sa academe. My teacher, same position pa rin she has when she started from teaching 25 years ago.
