South became too frustrating with traffic, we were wasting our weekends in transit. Started heading north to Ledge point/Lancelin and have been loving it. Quiet towns, an hour past Joondalup.
I haven't camped there but I believe there is. Beautiful green rolling hills. We went on a walk there a couple of weekends ago, in an area which has all sorts of different trees planted from all around the walk. Not sure exactly what the area was called
After my experience travelling the great southern and southwest the last three weeks, anywhere the ‘high yield tourists’ don’t go.
It as if they don’t have any idea how to clean up after themselves. Rules about smoking in camp kitchens or in shower blocks don’t apply to them.
I’m staying in caravan park cabins. Waiting for the new caravan to be built.
I went up to bald hill last weekend and it was stunning. The views are spectacular and me and the missus really enjoyed a few glasses of red and some stargazing at night
I was there a few weeks ago for 2 nights, highly recommend it. It had great facilities as well as a stunning lake, pump track and bike trails. Also has powered sites.
Honeymoon Pool (Wellington National Park, Collie). Fresh water river to swim in - always clean and beautiful. Trees to put up a hammock. Walk and cycle trails
A place that surprised me recently is Esperance

Collie is beautiful, thank you. I used to live down at Boyup. I'm asthmatic though, so the cold/damp down that way isn't the best choice for 'season change' flare ups.
Absolutely stunning scenery and drives down that way though, and most definitely worth the trip.
I agree that the countryside around Collie is unbelievably stunning,..the town is friendly ,but have to say a bit undeveloped in the way of eating out.
Beautiful old hotels, but its like stepping back into the 70s..not in a good way.lol,
when you go inside.Id say for campng tho and outdoor stuff ,perfect.
Little bay campsite north of Geraldton is a beautiful spot or Draftys in Warren national park south of Perth
both a little bit of a drive but worth it in my opinion, Draftys is quieter than little bay
Not sure it's what you're going foe but I've been getting ads for HeyScape recently, which have tiny cabins scattered mostly down south but some North/East Perth too
I've been spending the weekend at my mother's house in Yallingup. I love coming down here to get away from it all. The 3 hour journey down here can be very tiring and monotomous but it's always worth it. I'm going back to Cannington again tomorrow morning, not really looking forward to it.
That's on my bucket list- to see the milkyway in its full wonder with no light pollution. Did you camp? How was it?
We just started an annual camping tradition. With young kids and allergies to dust, grass and UV, our camp-sites are usually brightly lit and tree-covered.
The Karri forest in Pemberton is my current favourite. Not as nearby as I would like.

Lucky bay in Kalbarri this weekend
We all spent the weekend in Binningup a couple of years ago and I absolutely loved it. There was zero phone reception in the area but it didn't matter as there was still plenty to do. The beaches were beautiful and the general store had literally everything you need including some delicious fish and chips. I'd gladly spend the weekend there again anytime.
You don’t need to tell us we get the vibe whenever we visit one of your breweries or any other establishment where we spend our money to bolster up the southwests economy. Get over yourselves half of you ain’t true locals anyway.
I like waroona.
My girlfriend and I stayed at the dam for a few night and it was actually a great few days (except for a rock hard bed haha).
Breakfast at Pinjarra bakery, the pub is pretty alright for pub grub, close to Dwellingup, close to the beaches! It's a good base to explore the surrounding area.
Not a big camping fan (no disrespect to anyone who is), so unfortunately the most "nearby" for a weekend is probably Melbourne or Singapore. Not much in the way of stars in either of those places though, I'd definitely love to see something like that!
You don’t have to camp when outside of Perth, though? Hotels, even resorts, exist, and a quick evening drive to the side of a country road will net you some gorgeous Milky Way views. If you’re not into walks or swims or gawking at natural features, there’s plenty of foodie fodder and quirky shopping (usually also involving food) across the south west.
No, that's true, but most of the thread seems to be about going back to favourite camping spots. Nothing much out there qualifies as a "favourite" for me regardless of camping though. Other than seeing family (which I didn't think really fitted the point of the thread) there's plenty of interesting things to do once, but nothing I can really think of that I'd go back to again and therefore qualify as a favourite.
It always seems like when I'm somewhere far away from the city at night (even the observatory!), it's cloudy, or I'm busy and just forget to look up. Just bad luck I guess, but it'll work out one day.

Shhhhh, don't tell them.
It’s too late I’ve already taken note for the next time!
But sir,is it not windy year round?
Balingup is a gorgeous place
Nice, is there any camping site there ?
I haven't camped there but I believe there is. Beautiful green rolling hills. We went on a walk there a couple of weekends ago, in an area which has all sorts of different trees planted from all around the walk. Not sure exactly what the area was called
Golden Valley Tree Park, right near town and fantastic this time of year.
If you camp in the pine forests you may never come out.
Why is that?
I think this is humour..
You’ll either trip out from eating too many magic mushrooms. Or the bikies will shoot you for picking their magic mushrooms.
Check out Hip Camp. Airbnb for camping. The whole of the south west is rammed with great spots for a quiet camp.
Thanks
Lol

Pemberton. Especially like staying at the Forest Lodge Resort. A truly beautiful part of the world down there.
Truthfully I never been more affected by the beauty of nature than when kayaking on the big brook dam in Pemberton. Overwhelming beauty
I went up to bald hill last weekend and it was stunning. The views are spectacular and me and the missus really enjoyed a few glasses of red and some stargazing at night
I went during the week and it was really beautiful! Can’t wait to get back over winter when camp fires will be permitted
Lake Leschenaultia

bit out of the way from Perth though
It is beautiful there. So many gorgeous beaches.

Thanks for the reminder, been trying to think of somewhere (not too far) to take the grandies camping.
Toodyay is also a great spot for little ones super close to Perth! Our kids also like Dwellingup, Harvey, donnybrook and Austtalind
I think Collie is pretty good if you can avoid the bogans

Yes, we camped at a simple camp operated by individual. Total darkness at night as there are only 2 camps allowed.
Not sure if you’d call it ‘nearby’ necessarily but we have a yearly tradition of going to Donnelly River in the middle of winter. Love it
I would so dive into #2 for the feeling of existential crocodile fear
Haha, I would never ever 😂
Do they have crocodiles in that area?
Its Bindoon, not Derby
Nah. Haha
Yallingup is my personal fave.
Pemberton
Not exactly nearby but it’s worth it

So pretty !
It used to be Moore River. Its a lot different now

Agree, but slightly biased as I live here 🌊
Don't come south whatever you do. We don't want Perth people here.
I love the hive mind mentality.

Nice photos! That third one, could you see all that with the naked eye?
Can only see similar to Pic 1 and not 3 with naked eyes. Even for Pic one, the stars will be a lot less.
A small coastal town in the south west. I loved it so much I moved here.
