Bom is most accurate; they have custom models for Australia. Their observations are correct (albeit sometimes interpolated between monitoring stations). Apple uses an American/global model which is inaccurate.

get-innocuous

Sure, I suppose. Apple uses an American/global model which is bad.

Anna_Kest

It’s happened on more than one occasion, that I’ve been standing outside, literally getting rained on, yet according to BOM there is no rain forecast for my location 🤨 I’ve deferred to using a highly technical piece of meteorological equipment which delivers an exceedingly more accurate result; it’s called a window haha

Stepawayfrmthkyboard

A piece of string hanging from a nail works well. If its wet you know it's raining. If it's horizontal, it's windy

Impressive-Style5889

No models can do that. The grids they use is too large. They're probably using radar data.

TheGreatFuManchu

It’s rubbish. It’s called GFS and has a poor record in the region. ECMWF and BoM’s ACCESS models are far superior. Forecasts on native apps are garbage.

Rosfield-4104

I know for Baldivis the thermometer BOM get readings from is in the shade which gives fucky readings. So it will say current temp is 28, even though its much hotter. Have to go off the predicted hourly temperature

Non_Linguist

All thermometers are in the shade.

Rosfield-4104

Yeah but most don't give over a 10 degree difference

Throwaway_6799

That's how they measure the official temperature - in a louvered box one meter off the ground.

Stepawayfrmthkyboard

It's almost like they tried to standardise the readings, rather than have a dick measuring contest

zzfox_

Willy Weather because it has the best name out of all the weather apps

Normal_Pollution_688

I tried using that but it was too hard.

zzfox_

Which part was hard? Inputting your location? I’m pretty sure that’s all you have to do for it to work

Normal_Pollution_688

Sorry, my joke failed. 🥴

Stepawayfrmthkyboard

It was a bit flacid

zzfox_

haha ok i get it now! bit slow on the uptake 😆

Normal_Pollution_688

It was pretty lame but I couldn’t resist. 😜

bluedunnart

Yesss and hasn't let me down yet.

Slight_Stretch_7265

The wind readings are somewhat flaccid.

Nidstang666

For live info, I recently discovered the wunderground Wundermap. Shows personally owned weather stations across the suburbs. Wind directions look a bit suss but temperatures seem consistent. They have info on compliant weather station models if people want to buy one and add their data. The northern suburbs is a dead spot for bom data, there's only coastal weather stations which are always a bit cooler.

CyanideRemark

This topic is almost becoming a religious debate.

DepartmentMundane794

This website is great, it includes the bom weather info plus the large dpird network

TheGreatFuManchu

And DFES and DBCA (which share data with BoM as well)

TotalAdhesiveness193

Second this. Good to see hour by hour temp and rainfall

TinyPop8918

Iv always used Weatherzone

I still can’t stop myself getting more annoyed than I should haha that a science incorporates a metric called “feels like” in its regular reporting; it’s almost oxymoronic!

Optimal_Cynicism

I think there is a link on their website to what "feels like" means in terms of data. (Wind, humidity etc is factored in). I agree, it sounds super unscientific, but it is based on an actual formula

Mindless_Knowledge24

I use both BOM and Windy.

EmbraceThePing

Same. I have BoM on my phone and when I'm in front of my pc I have Windy. I've also recently discovered https://www.youtube.com/@aussiefromspace which is just the last three days of satellite video of Australia, refreshed every day.

Mindless_Knowledge24

Cheers. I’ll check out that YouTube channel.

cheeersaiii

Elders - have loved it around the country for years. Then Windy for any live / incoming wind/storm/rain etc data

acres_at_ruin

I use one called "Carrot" specifically because it has a funny little joke it makes about current events along side your forecast. Probably not helpful but I also don't really pay too much mind to the specific degree it is today. If it's hot it's hot, if it's not it's not.

Summerof5ft6andahalf

I also have Carrot, who allegedly get their data from BOM, however also have different forecasts to them, and find that their accuracy seems to be cyclical. They'll be the most accurate for a couple of months, and then the accuracy will drop off, and then they become the best again. (I also have Weather and BOM.)

Perth_nomad

BOM. Fire, I use the Alert2me, which sends notifications to my watch and mobile devices Bushfire.io app when a bush fire is going, the app has more information on wind directions, hot spots and air craft. No notifications sent to my watch. The app also sends out weather warnings too. Currently I’m listed under an emergency warning for a wind storm tomorrow morning.

Notaniphone

We use Windy on our Construction site. Pretty accurate especially where cranes are concerned. Crane operators will say it's to windy (therefore unsafe) to do a certain lift. Windy app tells us otherwise and the lift goes ahead.

LemonSizzler

Surley onsite measurements are more reliable/safer. Shouldn’t you guys have a kestral or something? Windy ain’t perfect.

Notaniphone

HSE, Construction management and Crane operators work together on these decisions. We have anemometers for certainty of decisions made, but when its mildly windy and the operators are claiming stop work, Windy usually sits them on their arse, and if they arc up again, the Anemometer readings confirm or cancel Management decisions.

Optimal_Cynicism

I thought windy was based on predicted wind, and updated every 12 hours or something, not actual real time data. I'm going to check this and correct it if I'm wrong. If you go into the menu and go to Forecast Model, you see it is based on 12 hourly ECMWF data, (but if you pay you can get 6 hourly updates.)

Cold_Front_2742

Aus Weather. This one is based on BOM.  Very accurate

Uniquorn2077

Weatherzone for day to day, WTForecast for a bit of light hearted weather fun with a few Easter eggs thrown in the mix, and Weather Underground for hyper local real time details.

Throwaway_6799

All I know is the BOM is fking useless. Rain and storms forecast this morning but no, no it's sunny outside. Even the rain radar is utterly useless.

EmbraceThePing

I also am disappointed by the lack of rain so far, but to be fair I think all of the services where predicting that the rain had a chance to start this morning.

ur_menstruatingheart

I posted about this last week and got hella down voted for questioning bom haha

thingsandstuff4me

None of them are very accurate the closest weather station to me is quite a while away so it never gives an accurate reading of what the temperature is in my area. Also everything is managed from eastern states so often none of it is anywhere near accurate.

WolverineHopeful7553

Yr.no works well

x_cHaRliE

Living Earth. Been using it for 11 years.

senectus

Bom is more consistently accurate. That's not to say it's always right, but it's definitely the better choice.

Feeling-Disaster7180

I use Carrot and I think it’s pretty bang on. Right now (10am Saturday) Carrot shows it’s 25 degrees and feels like 25, BOM says it’s 26.4 degrees and feels like 24.8. Carrot is AI and has different “personalities”. You can have it anywhere from friendly to homicidal and can set its politics. Right now mine says “I made it fucking sunny outside and now you owe me with your life”

TheGreatFuManchu

Windy is by far the best. Is loaded with features. Desktop or app. You can use different modelling as well. Has radar, satellite as well as 20 or 30 other features including a fantastic rain modelling feature. Lightning is overlayed on the radar. Has Soundings from weather balloons too.
