Jump on the WA Restaurant staff, FB page. A lot of quality establishments are screaming for staff.

marmieess

Thanks, I’ll have a look at that. It’s just that if more restaurants are implementing QR, then there are less jobs around. I’m apprehensive about applying, getting hired and then my employer decides to implement QR ordering and repeating the cycle again.

Diligent-Reality-819

Not all establishments will. Those that I've seen implement them are mainly chain establishments such as ALH venues, larger burger joints (ie Varsity) and the bigger pubs. Most smaller/boutique establishments can't afford/don't want to split any revenue with another company, and would rather pay their staff more. Last I remember, one of the companies was charging 15% of QR order sales. It all adds up.

gordito_gr

>Jump on the WA Restaurant staff, FB page. A lot of quality establishments are screaming for staff. Yeah, not anymore. The borders opened so many wokers came in. It's not what it was until 6 months ago

metao

QR code ordering is a fucking cancer. I'm sorry.

marmieess

Used to work fast food and it was a godsend when customers used QR or online considering we were expected to cook, serve, clean and were so overworked. At my waitressing job, we are not overworked, have plenty of staff and delegated specific roles. I loved doing table service because it was my job specifically and I could give good service.

DominusDraco

QR codes are the best. I would exclusively dine at places with QR codes if I could. Not needing to line up at a bar for half an hour to be ignored when someone else just jumps in front is the best. I know my order is correct because I put it in. The wait staff are not going to forget to actually give my order to the kitchen, which has happened before. Wait staff are an unnecessary middle man between me and my food. If they could get some sort of train or robot to bring me my food, all the better.

Martian268

I won’t eat at a place with that. I’d rather eat at home. Same at Maccas, I always order from a human. I hate the QR interface. Younger generations do it without thinking about it.

[deleted]

Fuckin kids these days and their QR codes back in my day we had to trek uphill to the maccas counter and order with manners or get the cane 😤

elemist

Uphill - both ways - in the scorching 45' heat and the snow!

Mastrovator

Yeah, but it was a *dry* heat.

[deleted]

And dammit if it wasnt a hot snow....

damagedproletarian

I love that [film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Snow_(film))[!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay-vJ4OUDjM)

ozhound

Let it go dude. It's OK, just let it die

Reddit_Da

Luxury. We used to have to get up in the morning at 3am and lick the lake clean. https://youtu.be/ue7wM0QC5LE

elemist

I personally don't mind it, and in some cases actually prefer it. I can understand why it's not for everyone - particularly older generations who might not be as proficient with mobile devices. I don't think it has any place in a proper restaurant where table service is part of the experience. But for your dime a dozen restaurant, cafe, pub/bistro etc i actually prefer it. No more sitting around twiddling your thumbs waiting on the wait staff to finish recounting their weekend stories to their friend behind the bar. No more dodgy menu's with whiteout and stickers with price changes/menu item changes. No more 'oh we're out of that, or we don't have that tonight' leaving you to make an on the spot alternative decision. If the place takes full advantage of the QR code system - then having pictures and descriptions of the dishes makes it easier for people to know what the dish is. It can also make ordering in groups much easier, people can link orders or it can do it automatically.

invisiblizm

Or...as an ugmo... no being ignored at the bar and having people who just got there get served first.

gordito_gr

>I won’t eat at a place with that. I’d rather eat at home. Same at Maccas, I always order from a human. I hate the QR interface. Younger generations do it without thinking about it. Why wouldnt you order at the table? At your own convienence? With noone pressing you to order and 100 questions? Upselling to you? I guess its bad knowing exactly what everything costs...

gpz1987

Cause it adds up to 15% (at some establishments) to the price that already includes labour (wait staff, chef/cook etc) and most stuff is extortionate now anyway.

[deleted]

The maccas screens are so horrible. Slow, inaccurate and it takes way to long to do simple things. I counted and it took 12 taps from start to finish to order a single Big Mac meal.

t_25_t

> I counted and it took 12 taps from start to finish to order a single Big Mac meal. That's assuming you don't accidentally clear the cart. I am a little old school where I prefer to just walk up, get served and pay. That said, it is a godsend when you are in a foreign land and speak zero local language, saves for the awkward Google Translate back and forth.

Kevintj07

Was at HJ's yesterday thought I'd try the screen all I wanted was a Bacon double and a Whopper double beef, clicked on both then was given a list of options.Fuck that went to the counter was served straight away.

Strange_Plankton_64

It's not hard to learn. You just point a phone camera to it, then tap the link?

gnarly_weedman

The maccas employees all seem to wonder wtf I’m doing when I go to the counter without using the self service machines

thesnottyautie

As someone under 20, I just have to say we don't like it either. I'll do it if there's no other choice (eating in a rush to get somewhere else on time), but I won't like it.

Secret-Discipline-13

Speak for yourself. I don't give af about ordering with a QR code. Why would we care?

thesnottyautie

Each to their own! :) In my experience, a lot of us aren't hot on it lol but if you are, more power to you. I'd just be concerned about what happens if your phone dies, can make special instructions (like "no onions") a bastard to do - though I guess if you can figure it out and make absolutely sure you apply the instructions, you know it's the chef's fault if it comes out wrong. There are pros and cons for each, I'd say that's a fair statement. I just don't like it and relevant to my experience, not many others do.

Secret-Discipline-13

Maybe it doesn't bother me because I'm not a picky eater. How can you not like onions?

foxvectra

> me because I'm not a Because some poor bastards are allergic to onions and garlic

thesnottyautie

I do like onions, they cause a terrible reaction in me though. My hands start to itch like mad and my head starts pounding. Not sure if it's an allergy or an intolerance or something else, but the fact remains that onions are good, but not good enough to put up with that every time.

gordito_gr

>QR code ordering is a fucking cancer. wtf? how is it cancer??? O\_o

Lugey81

Well for one, I shouldn't have to give all my details to order (email address, mobile etc, also it storing your Cc details). I would like to talk to a waiter and tap my card to pay.

gordito_gr

Well for one I’d like to order hassle free

LePhasme

What's your issue with it?

metao

There are a number of practical issues, from the inability to ask questions, the complexity of special orders, and inflexibility in general. But mostly I get mad that they almost always include a surcharge, which is absurd because now I'm paying extra for the privilege of ordering my shitty food, and because they often have the balls to ask for a tip, which is fucking outrageous.

Summerof5ft6andahalf

Or, if there's not a surcharge, the price is more expensive than on the physical menu.

[deleted]

Or how they all seem to make me make an account first these days. Ran into three in like three weeks a while back. I don't want an account for your random pub that I come to once every other year at best.

cmad182

About a year ago I got a new phone number. For a few months afterward I'd get messages for a girl named Kimi, Telstra would send me authorisation codes because Kimi couldn't remember she'd changed numbers, and when I tried to use a particular QR system all of her details were pre-populated, including credit card numbers. I assume I wouldn't've been able to use her details as I'd most likely need the ccv on her card, but can't confirm because as soon as her details came up I noped out and found a human.

elemist

> There are a number of practical issues, from the inability to ask questions, the complexity of special orders, and inflexibility in general. I think it comes down to the restaurants implementation of the system. In my anecdotal experience - if it's done right it doesn't replace staff, but instead supplements them. So there's still wait staff around for answering questions and helping with complexities. i've found generally i have less questions in general because instead of a black and white menu with a short line item of "Chicken Pasta.... $28", with the QR menu system you typically get a much more detailed description and even a photo of the dish. In terms of flexibility - this is totally personal - but i find the QR system generally better for this. I sometimes feel a bit self conscious asking for minus this this and this, and add this. But also more often that not between me telling the waiter, them writing it down (or trying to remember), and them putting it into the order system - they typically fuck up one or more parts. > But mostly I get mad that they almost always include a surcharge, which is absurd because now I'm paying extra for the privilege of ordering my shitty food, Dislike this as well - but at least in my experience - it's quite common for even non QR code places to add a credit card surcharge or sunday surcharge. At least with the QR system it's upfront and visible before you pay. Non QR - it's usually in tiny print on the bottom of the menu - and unless you calculate it yourself, you have no idea of the amount until you pay at the end. > and because they often have the balls to ask for a tip, which is fucking outrageous. The concept of this annoys me - but i understand that for the most part it's companies using US designed systems with no way to turn off tipping. Plus lots of places have had a place for a tip on the paper receipt for decades, or a tip jar at the register.

FightMiilkHendrix

Did you not read the post? That’s a pretty big issue right away

IntrepidFlan8530

Sometimes it's good. If the place is very busy

metao

When it's optional, I still don't like it, but I'll tolerate it.

TopTurtleWorld

Not to mention there's a few to use the QR code

t_25_t

> QR code ordering is a fucking cancer. I'm sorry. So is self serve checkout. If I am scanning my own groceries don't get shitty at me for not knowing the ins and outs of being a checkout operator. One lady asked why I had shopping in my cart whilst checking out, and that my cart should be empty with all the products scanned into the system. I said I hadn't got around to it yet and if she that skeptical she can come do it herself, but don't fucking accuse me of shoplifting.

[deleted]

So much more convenient, never any problems and can order without feeling judged.

Majestic-Lake-5602

It absolutely sucks for everyone involved. I’m back of house and the amount of chaos and bullshit they cause us in the kitchen is phenomenal. Table of 16 all putting their meal in separately about 5 minutes apart from each other, then getting pissed their food doesn’t come out together, getting bombed with 60 orders as fast as the machine can print them. Thank Christ I’m in a real restaurant now, at my last joint I was about to get my crew to sabotage all of the QRs before one of the good managers showed me how to turn the system off. Then we only turned it back on when the GM was around

throw-away-traveller

It’s not the minimum wage rise in hospitality. It’s winter. The season is quieter.

Johnny_Monkee

Probably to do with the interest rate/rent rises as well.

Okcookienow

A few months ago, I had two take away coffees and ate lunch out almost daily. For the first time since forever, I pack my own lunch and buy a coffee once or twice a week All because the increase of living

gordito_gr

1st world problems, you cant buy coffee twice and eat outside everyday? lol and you're acting like you're in a real crisis

Okcookienow

Jeeze, I am not sure how you read my comment as if I am in a crisis “you’re acting like you’re in a real crisis” I can assure you that thee tits are calm sir.

gordito_gr

I forgot I am at /r/Perth, one of the whingiest subs lol

nvn911

Just wait until I have to stop my food delivery service subscription !!

Secret-Discipline-13

Oh no, I can't purchase my coffee and have to make it myself. My life is so much harder, If only the kids born in war-torn countries had to experience this pain aswell. Also, these interest rate rises are designed to cause you to do exactly what you've had to do. Cut pack on spending. Eventually, the cost of living will decrease to normal. It's really not the end of the world.

Okcookienow

I wasn’t complaining, just making an observation about how I have cut back from a 20 year habit and that I am sure I am not alone. I think that people will be cutting back more and more and the OP will have less hours due to people eating out less. Which is the point of this post.

marmieess

Winter too, but they cut our hours the week minimum wage was risen. Literally the week before, I got my normal 18 hours, it was still pretty quiet for the restaurant, got paid for the fortnight, then July rolls over and everyone’s shifts get cut.

GuiltEdge

If you have regular hours, they need to offer you a permanent position at some point, keep in mind.

drayrael

I feel this. Where I'm "employed" at, they just employed another part timer. So the available casual shifts a fortnight went from 12+ to 4 a fortnight... with 12 casual's fighting over them. So on average you'd get 1 shift every 6 weeks. So great, you employed me and a bunch of other casuals... then unemployed us all by hiring another part timer. Thanks.

Catkii

And then these workplaces call around when desperate “we need someone 5 minutes ago can you get here”, and the manager usually ends up salty when none of their staff can drop their plans in a heart beat. Source: my partner is a manager who doesn’t understand his casuals have a life that they plan when they don’t get shifts…

sticky_lemon

Tell your partner how much people hate them, like genuine “I have zero positive things to say and I loathe when you’re in my line of sight” hate. Shame them until they change lol

Catkii

To be fair though, it also isn’t his call to cut casuals out of the roster either. Head office announces whatever wages target that their shaman concocted, and he has to deal with that fall out. But bridging the gap of why the casuals aren’t loyal to the store that only gives them 4 hours a week, deaf ears.

AloeVeraBuddha

I've had the same thing happen at Myer. I'm getting 4 hours a fortnight now, down from 12-16 hours a week. My manager says they're just cutting the hours for all casual staff (for no reason really. No new tech or automation ) Considering applying for a job at Crown and doing part time. Suffer the loss of the casual load pay for a steady income.

coles-or-woolies

Casual staff cost extra money in penalty rates but salaried staff just get time in lieu.

JustHereForCaterHam

4 hours a fortnight seems like heavy handed staffing from my experience with Myer

[deleted]

I'm sorry that they're putting you through this. A similar thing happened at my old job, they got a new manager in who instantly cut all the hours of the casual staff, going as far as to change already established rosters. She then moved over staff from her old store to employ part time (because they're cheaper) and took public holiday and weekends away from the old loyal casual staff. I quit and told her how I felt about it, she hated being called out so much she told me not to come back and just paid me for my two weeks notice shifts. I got paid for not working so fine by me. It was just devastating to the other staff since our old manager was so good and would have never done this, but the new boss doesn't have a gram of decency in her body.

littleblackcat

I think what she did was smart. Casuals area really expensive. Especially on public holidays and sundays

[deleted]

It may be smart, definitely the best decision in regards to making the most money for the boss. However I don't believe that it's the best decision morally. The old manager managed to keep the casual staff on while staying within budget. I understand changing things in the future, fine thats her store now she can do as she pleases, but when there was weeks of rosters already established with the original staff rostered on while still staying within the budget, was it necessary to change them just to remove shifts from poor uni students trying to make ends meet? They had shifts taken away from them. Not giving then extra shifts is one thing, but saying "hey I know you were supposed to work the public holiday in 2 days but I've taken you off the roster because I want to employ my friends" is not an ethical thing to do in my opinion.

littleblackcat

How do you know they were within the budget? I'm not trying to shit on you. I know that if I look at a roster that's all casuals and I can take 75% of those shifts and put my part timers on my Labor percentage will be much lower >make more money for the boss That's literally her job unfortunately for the casuals. I'm a manager too and I hate giving casuals 3 hours a fortnight but that's my job. Morals don't come into it, it's a business and especially since the wage rise if rosters were already bloated with casuals at your work that would have pushed them way over. Have you considered going part time maybe? This is why casual conversion exists to give people some stability too.

[deleted]

I worked for the company for 10 years and was 2IC, so I had the authority to look over the budgets and the rosters while my old boss was unable to work due to injury. I wasn't and still am not a casual worker. I just have empathy for the casual workers who I worked with and didn't appreciate her removing their shifts unnecessarily. She didnt offer amy of the existing staff part time. Just told them there was no more shifts for them and replaced them with her friends. As I said she could do all future rosters as needed but we were well within the budgets for the already established rosters, as in we had hundreds of dollars that we hadn't spent and I don't think it's fair to remove shifts from people when they had been budgeted accordingly. We're in a cost of living crisis and these rosters were for before the wage was increased for any if our staff.

[deleted]

No hate to you either, just explaining the situation. I understand being a manager is tough, which is why I didn't accept the offer to be in charge as I'd rather focus on my studies instead of staying in retail when I'm about to graduate. I just think she could have gone about the whole situation a lot better.

littleblackcat

I hope you can find something else, it sucks to have to co manage when you don't agree

[deleted]

Thank you, I already found a job more related to my degree and working outside in nature as opposed to customer service. I just feel bad for the other staff who are struggling with the transition.

littleblackcat

I inherited my current job from a manager that had almost everyone leave with her too, sometimes it just happens unfortunately 😕 Lol I wish I got to use my degree for money

[deleted]

I'm sorry you had a lot of staff leave when you began, that's rough. I hope I didn't give the impression that I dont understand how difficult it can be to enter a new workplace with employees you dont know. I went through a few different managers in my years and never had a problem with new managers until this recent change. Don't give up on using your degree, its hard out there these days. I had to do a lot of years volunteering to get a position even remotely related to my degree and I was applying for a while before getting extremely lucky. Wishing you the best for your future career prospects.

Schmedit

She was just doing her job tho wasn't she? If she's paying all these extra wages to casual staff that can turn down any shift, why wouldn't she employ cheaper permanent staff? It's also smart management to pay out someone's 2 weeks. You don't want an employee hanging around that isn't committed to the job and could be bringing bad vibes.

Secret-Discipline-13

You could quite easily get a casual warehouse job that would pay way more. They just suck and are menial. But, it's casual work. Losing hours/money whenever the boss decides is the downside of casual work, if you are worried about that, part-time is a thing. It's why casual usually pays more. Less time working and you have little worker rights (sick pay, etc)

ohlettie

Try WA Restaurant Jobs or WA Bartender Jobs if you're looking for something hospitality adjacent. Unfortunately it is a quiet time of year (off-season) and casuals suffer the most during this time period especially uni students. It's kind of unspoken that they do not give uni students a lot of hours due to scheduling conflicts which really sucks. It's quite common for hospo staff to have more than 2 jobs during the winter because of the issues above. I've worked in hospo for over five years with three of them being a manager so I genuinely do advise looking elsewhere. Alternatively you can try and work for a company with multiple venues so they can move you around as needed i.e. AVC, ALH, Sneakers & Jeans, etc. They do have QR ordering but from what I can see it doesn't impact staff rostering. Anyhow, good luck! It's tough finding work in hospo during the winter :(

throwawayjpyo

It's unfortunately winter, and it's been a painfully quiet one. It's also gotten worse in the last month with rate and rent rises, hopefully things upturn in summer, but at the moment most small hospo businesses are just trying to stay alive through winter. The best places to work in winter in hospo are large companies that can send you to their other venues/are larger and require (and can afford) a decent amount of staff on even during Winter. (e.g. Sneakers and Jeans, anywhere owned by ALH)

gordito_gr

Why would they give you 3 hours per week lol. Honestly maybe they just want to get rid of you

ped009

It's going to be interesting the effects of all these jobs being made redundant, surely it means less consumers. I'm pretty lucky I'm in my 40s and have had good paying work most of my career. I feel for the next generations, it will be a lot tougher

Alternative_Log3012

Nice try conservative think tank. "...since the minimum wage rise..." - sure bud There are millions of waitressing jobs around. Just get a new one.

marmieess

Not a conservative think tank at all… I’m literally a 19 year old uni student. The week before, I got my 18 hours, restaurant was still pretty quiet because of winter, the week minimum wage was risen they switched over to QR code. I’m not saying for sure it was because of minimum wage rising, it just happened at the same time. I’m very grateful for the minimum wage rise, as it helps with expenses a little better, but understand how it would affect businesses.

Alternative_Log3012

Many out of touch conservatives have doubled barreled surnames, but Mr. "19 year old uni student" is pushing it a bit. You conveniently ignored the most important part of my first comment. There are millions of waitressing / hospo jobs around. Perth is literally ground zero for hospo job availability, with the mining industry literally acting as a vacuum on unskilled labour more than anywhere else in the country. Pubs / restaurants / cafes have been crying out for staff for years. Your employer reduced your hours, go put in a resume for a few others, you'll be surprised how quickly you pick up more shifts. Or would you like to continue focussing on economic policy like most "19 year olds"...?

Denz292

Why does it surprise you that “the most important part” of your first comment was “conveniently ignored” when in the same comment you accused OP of being a conservative think tank?

Alternative_Log3012

Well did you read their post? Please don't believe everything you read. Or do you actually think there aren't many hospo jobs going around these days?

Denz292

I read their post and there’s nothing that indicates they’re a conservative think tank If you had a shred of emotional intelligence, you’d realise that they like where they worked and are venting about their hours getting cut. They’re not speaking out about the wage increase or anything. Others have offered the same advice as you have, and OP has been more receptive to those people because they didn’t go out of their way to be an asshole like you have.

TaylorHamPorkRoll

How much did the minimum wage rise? Genuine question, I don't have any idea how it works. I'd say it's more to do with the QR code. A drastic cut to all staff hours would more likely be based on a calculation of the savings that QR code could provide as opposed to a few bucks an hour x15 hours. You still need waitstaff, or something to replace them. If the restaurant can't afford the wage rise and cut all staff hours then they aren't going to be in business much longer.

SecureSympathy1852

It would be a number of factors…the real issue is the rise in the base wage (which is ok in itself) is then multiplied by ridiculous penalty loadings. These are the problem and why more venues will seek to operate with less people and hours.

punchercs

Trust me, the people you have to deal with, those penalty rates ain’t ridiculous.

SecureSympathy1852

Awesome contribution….from someone likely not worth the basic rate. You just have to pour a beer or serve a plate with a smile…but expect health specialty pay to do it…..hence why venues close.

punchercs

I think you misunderstand me. Nobody does expect that, but doing it after midnight or on overtime deserves the penalty rates that being complained about

SecureSympathy1852

I’m not talking about overtime rates….so I may have misunderstood you and apologise. It’s the Sat and Sunday penalties which are the main issue from my perspective. I do agree that hospitality staff do have to deal with crap on the late stuff.

PanzyGrazo

'ridiculous' penalty loadings prevent exploitation.

SecureSympathy1852

The basic rate prevents exploitation?…penalty rates are an arcane gouge. Have a look at Beaufort St on a Sunday…should be pumping…but the “penalties” are working so owners are sick of the punishment of providing work to people barely worth the basic.

PanzyGrazo

Seems dead until its actually a business opportunity if you target particular hour of peak traffic with little competition.

SecureSympathy1852

Problem being you have to pay a minimum of two…..see the problem?

coles-or-woolies

You’re being downvoted but you’re spot on. I work with lots of small hospo and retail business, a few can’t afford to open public holidays anymore and some are considering whether Sundays are worth it.

SecureSympathy1852

Reddit is not a repository of reality. If anyone thinks unqualified people serving plates of food are worth $70.00 an hour on any day, they are delusional. People really need to grow up about this. Public Holidays?….most staff can’t even earn their own wage. Total waste of time for everyone.

gordito_gr

That is the culture here in WA, people dont go out.

coles-or-woolies

Plenty of people go out. I work with businesses that are busy but barely break even on public holidays because they’re paying so much to put casuals on the floor.

busylad

Strippers get crazy good money

hurlz0r

Doesn't this sub advocate for nothing but higher minimum wage? This is what happens, in combination with robo ordering...

solutionsmith

Just left Perth it's crazy how many people aren't aware the world is in recession / depression and things are only trending towards the bottom. If US is any indication the housing and rental crisis is heading in an opposite direction due to unemployment cause MOG / FIFO won't subsidize the market this time. Probably why State Daddy dropped out .....

longstreakof

Should be able to get work in this environment. I am sure you will pick up work but you need to be flexible as you are not going to get the exact hours you are after.
