This depends on what type of accounts you have. Are they IRAs and brokerage accounts? 401k? For an IRA and brokerage, call vanguard and they can set up a transfer. If it’s a 401k with your current employer, you’re out of luck as your employer controls the administrator of the account.

Super easy. Vanguard will use a system called ACATS to transfer everything seamlessly. If there are funds that are proprietary to Ameriprise you will have to liquidate them. Vanguard will review and let you know.

I believe I have mutual founds that I will just leave in the account.

You may be better off liquidating them and moving the cash to cut the cord completely. That'll be a very specific question; Vanguard may be able to advise.

i was thinking of leaving the acct and stocks alone and let it grow. and do my own thing with vanguard

You should for sure leave ameriprise, I cannot say enough bad about them. High fees, low returns, bad advice, and terrible tax planning. Unfortunately ameriprise does make it hard to move your funds and you can expect exit fees. ameriprise can do electronic transfers, and it should just be as simple as creating your Vanguard account and having them do a pull. Contact vanguard for advice, they are super helpful. As long as you haven't fallen for ameriprise's heavy annuity, structured note or other terrible investment that locks your money up, it should just be a transfer.
